Islanders Write 2024

Islanders Write turns ten-ish this year. This would be the event’s tenth anniversary, were it not for two years of pandemic cancellations. Covid, of course, was the plot twist few of us were expecting. If only the pandemic could be revised and rewritten. It was ten years ago that Peter Oberfest, the former publisher of the MV Times, decided the paper should sponsor a community event that brought together Vineyard-connected writers and publishing professionals for panel discussions and workshops. Peter tasked me with arranging the details, and on a spectacular August beach day, writers, readers, and literary minded folks from across the Island opted to skip the beach and come to the Grange Hall, where the event was then held, for a day of what turned out to be fascinating and evocative

discussions about the art, craft, and business of writing.

On the tenth-ish anniversary of Islanders Write, The MV Times is no longer owned by Peter and Barbara Oberfest. In January 2024, Steve Bernier purchased the paper from the Oberfests and Charlie Sennott was named the publisher.

When I reached out to Charlie to find out if the MV Times wanted to continue with Islanders Write, I was delighted with his reply: “Of course we want to keep it going!”

And so it is that the MV Times welcomes you back to Featherstone Center for the Arts for panel conversations, writing workshops, and author signings.

We are extremely grateful to the 34 writers and publishing professionals

who are speaking at the year’s event. We are thrilled to be back at Featherstone Center for the Arts surrounded by Delita Martin’s extraordinary work. The writers who will be speaking at Islanders Write 2024 have all written books. We hope you will support them and Edgartown Books, here selling books by Islanders Write authors, as well as other books about writing, and hosting the author signings.

If you get hungry or need a caffeine boost, Scottish Bakehouse is on site with their delectable pastries and delicious lunch options.

When we first started talking about Islanders Write ten years ago we wanted to make the event free to attend. The cost

of just about everything on the Vineyard these days is staggering, but it is still free to attend Islanders Write ten years on. This event has grown over the years, and local newspapers, including the MV Times, are struggling to stay afloat. The MV Times remains committed to Islanders Write, however it would no longer be possible to keep this event free without the generous support of our sponsors, to whom we are very grateful: Cronig's Market, Doug Liman, The Martha's Vineyard Cultural Council, Farm Neck Foundation, The Martha's Vineyard Community Foundation, Island Proofreading, Mimi and Peter Haas Fund, Judith Hannan, Jonathan Lipnick and Susan Scheuer.

Thank you for joining us. Kate Feiffer Event Producer

On the Walls Around You

Delita Martin - “Sometimes My Blues Change Colors”

Mixed-media prints by celebrated master printmaker Delita Martin, whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, will be on the walls of the Francine Kelley Gallery at Featherstone Center for the Arts through Sept. 1.

Martin is compelled to explore what she calls the “veilscape,” which sits between the waking and spirit worlds and is one she believes we all inhabit.

“That’s the space I want to capture in my art to tell the story of the women in this gallery,” she says. “You are constantly transitioning in and out of that space; we just don’t recognize it. I’m curious as to what that looks like.

The challenge for me was how to visually describe this space. It became color, texture, and pattern. When you see the figure going in and out of the pattern and see it on the skin, it references the woman transitioning into her spiritual space.” -Excerpt from an article by Abby Remer in the MV Times.

Walter Shapiro was an Islanders Write regular whose brilliant political insights and stunningly sharp wit informed and engaged us. Walter spent decades as a political columnist, writing for publications such as the Washington Post, Newsweek, Time, USA Today, Esquire, and The New

Republic. Walter was also the author of “Hustling Hitler” and “One Car Caravan,” which in a recent tribute, James Fallow wrote: “This book deserves a place in the campaign canon.” Walter and his wife Meryl loved the Vineyard, and we loved having them here.

A beloved teacher at the MV Charter School, Laurie was the frontwoman for the pioneering Minneapolis all-female

writing memoir at Islanders Write and Featherstone Literary Arts. At the time of her death, Laurie was getting ready to start promoting the recently updated reissue of her 2007 memoir “Petal Pusher.”

In memory of Walter, Laurie, and Florence, Edgartown Books will have their books for sale at Islanders Write.
