DESTINATION : MALTA

BECAUSE MALTA

Malta boasts an enviable combination of beautiful scenery, a vibrant nightlife, rich history and the people very friendly. Malta is a cross between an open-air museum and a place among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Malta was declared the country with the best climate in the world (International Living Magazine USA). In addition to pleasant average temperatures and long hours of sunshine (more than 5 hours, even in winter), sunny days are critical (over 300). Frost and snow are unknown. The country is ideal for hikers, divers, water sports enthusiasts and active people. Malta benefits from its central location in the Mediterranean, in the vicinity of North Africa, and offers hot, dry summers and winters that seem to spring. Usually a refreshing breeze blowing on the islands. This keeps the rain clouds away and dries up in summer the ground. The Maltese are characterized by the friendliness of the Italian neighbors and courtesy of the English settlers.

8

HISTORY

The Maltese Islands went through a golden Neolithic period, the remains of which are the mysterious temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility. Later on, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, all left their traces on the Islands. In 60 A.D. St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island while on his way to Rome and brought Christianity to Malta. The Arabs conquered the islands in 870 A.D. and left an important mark on the language of the Maltese. Until 1530 Malta was an extension of Sicily: The Normans, the Aragonese and other conquerors who ruled over Sicily also governed the Maltese Islands. It was Charles V who bequeathed Malta to the Sovereign Military Order of St. John of Jerusalem who ruled over Malta from 1530 to 1798. The Knights took Malta through a new golden age, making it a key player in the cultural scene of 17th and 18th century Europe. The artistic and cultural lives of the Maltese Islands were injected with the presence of artists such as Caravaggio, Mattia Preti and Favray who were commissioned by the Knights to embellish churches, palaces and auberges.

9

KNIGHTS OF ST. JOHN To trace the Knights, start in the places they made home: the Three Cities and Fort St. Angelo; then Valletta, the baroque, fortified city they builtafter the Great Siege of 1565. You'll sense their presence by wandering through their palaces, courtyards and gardens. Across the Maltese Islands, you'll find more evidence of their stay in their military engineering and architectural feats: forts, bastions, watch towers, acquaducts, churches and cathedrals. Not to mention the rich patrimony they bequeathed the Islands with works of art, furniture, silverware and sculpture. Less evident, but no less important, is the place they gave the Islands in the history of medicine.

10

The Maltese Cross was officially adopted by the Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John in 1126. Its eight points denote the eight obligations of the knights, namely "to live in truth, have faith, repent one's sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, be sincere and whole-hearted, and to endure persecution".

With time, the eight points also came to represent the eight "langues" (national groupings) of the noblemen who were admitted into the brotherhood, namely those of Auvergne, Provence, France, Aragon, Castille and Portugal, Italy, Baviere (Germany), and England (with Scotland and Ireland). To live in truth and justice we need a special place..

Knights are back! You can be one of them 11

NAMINGN AND LOGO

The logo is inspired from the two colours that identify the Republic of Malta state: red and white are the colours imported by knights that disembark on the Island. Also we can see a cross inside and that what it means not just the emblem of malta’s flag and the symbol of Knights that are back thrusting sword and their presence on Island. 12
