am delighted to welcome you to another release of LUXCIOR and the opportunity to relieve your eyes from your phone. After all, let's be honest: What is better, to read from our little screens, or to enjoy the visual impact of a large-format, beautiful, and luxurious magazine? I'm certainly not hooked to the pre-smartphone era; I love my Samsung and I value the immense range of benefits from this amazing digital world. But no one can deny that certain things will not go out of style, at least not in the near future. And no matter how much you can view in a 6.6-inch screen, the truth is that UHD TVs, theatres, and largeformat magazines still beat the heck out of the little guys. True, younger Millenials may prefer to burn their eyes all day on the little screen. But those in their late 30's, 40's and up -which makes for over 80% of our audience- at least for the time being will much rather view things in larger, more traditional formats. After all, that's what we grew up on. Either way, we are happy to cover all ends of the spectrum to make sure no one is left out from enjoying the best of LUXCIOR. Although we celebrate the fact that Covid is rapidly being controlled in Texas and most of our nation, I invite you to continue to pray for countries like India, Brazil, Mexico and others that are still undegoing tremendous suffering. On a final note, I'd like to invite you to register your exotic for the highly anticipated 2021 6th Annual Houston Exotic Auto Festival, to be held for the first time at fabulous Highland Village (November 7) and on the exciting race-track at MSR Houston (November 21). Check the details inside and at houstonexoticautofestival.com. Stay safe, take care of others, and may God continue to bless you!

Celebrating

HIGHLAND VILLAGE Established in the 1920s by brothers William and Michael Hogg, River Oaks was set up as a planned community just outside of the Houston city limits. Through highly regulated building and aesthetic standards, as well as strict limitations regarding who could live in the neighborhood, River Oaks became an incredibly exclusive and expensive neighborhood. Once the city of Houston annexed River Oaks in 1927, it continued to grow and thrive as the city did following World War II. To this day, it remains one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the country. Given the success of River Oaks, builder S.N. Adams decided the residents needed a shopping center, so he developed Highland Village in the mid-1940s, naming it Highland Village after his native Scotland. Adams was also responsible for establishing the Oak Estates and Highland Village subdivisions that border the shopping center. The shopping center and surrounding neighborhood have since grown to be a welcome supplement to River Oaks, with the two areas feeding each other with residents, shoppers, and diners. Highland Village was one of the first shopping centers opened in Houston. The Adams family sold the shopping center to investors in the early 1960s and the development changed multiple hands until it was purchased by Haidar Barbouti and Highland Village Holdings in 1991. Barbouti's leadership led to multiple changes at Highland Village. In 1994, the center was selected by Starbucks to house its first location in Houston. He also led an initiative in the early 2000s to reshape Highland Village and attract large national stores to the center. Crate & Barrel opened a 39,000 square foot location at Highland Village in 2000. The Crate & Barrel building was later described by architectural historian Stephen Fox as Houston's most ambitious work of retail architecture of the 2000s. By 2004, Barbouti's work at developing and repositioning the center was being recognized throughout the region and the per-square-foot volumes of Highland Village stores such as Williams-Sonoma and Pottery

36

Barn were estimated to be in the top 10 percent of most types of chains according to industry analysts. In 2008, the center donated the retail space and utilities necessary for Highland Village Adoption Center, a pet adoption center, to open its doors in Highland Village. Highland Village's Apple Store opened on March 16, 2012, to coincide with the release of Apple's third-generation iPad. The Highland Village location was also the second Apple Store in Texas to include a "briefing room," an area designed for presentations to business customers. New high-end businesses continue to find Highland Village the perfect destination to reach Houston's most affluent neighborhoods. Highland Village came since its development with an undeniable power-benefit: its Rodeo Road-style with palm trees along both sides of the road, in Houston's most exclusive shopping and dining boulevard -Westheimer Rd.- with the advantage over Beverly Hills of having the convenience of ample store-front parking. However, HV's success doesn't necessarily come just from its strategic location, convenience, and design. Haidar Barbouti's obvious business and marketing genius, combined with his remarkable understanding of the local and international luxury trends, paired with his versatile creativity, allowed him to continue to grow Highland Village in spite of the most adverse conditions, like the 2008 recession and the 2020 pandemic, making it one of the most coveted retail centers in Texas. After the recent opening of Gauchos do Sul (Houston's most exclusive Brazilian steakhouse) and other top high-end retailers, construction is well underway for more, promising 2021 to be its best year yet. Showing once again his refined taste for the finest things in life, Barbouti agreed to partner with the Houston Exotic Auto Festival and Lamborghini Houston, to host on November 7th Part I (Part II will be held at Houston's racetrack MSR on Nov. 21st) of this fabulous 2021 6th annual edition of the show, and invite to Highland Village exotic and luxury vehicle owners from all makes for a sensational event.

MERGING Indoor and Outdoor Living A GROWING TREND IN HOME DESIGN Enjoying time outdoors surrounded by nature has been found to have so many benefits on both our physical and emotional health. Studies show that being in nature or even viewing scenes of nature reduces stress, muscle tension, and blood pressure and increases pleasant feelings, a sense of peace, and overall physical wellbeing. This is done by not only creating beautiful and functional outdoor spaces and bringing the outdoors into your interior with natural products, textures and greenery, but as you combine and create seamless transitions between the two. The backyard is easily becoming a true extension of the home, expanding your livable, usable space and home value.

62

By Kathy Anderson, Senior Design Editor Founder and owner of Eklektik Interiors

With these and so many other advantages in mind, it is no wonder that there is a growing trend in home design of merging indoor and outdoor living. The lines are being blurred between the interior and outdoor areas, which creates an easier flow and blending of living spaces. This is done by not only creating beautiful and functional outdoor spaces and bringing the outdoors into your interior with natural products, textures and greenery, but as you combine and create seamless transitions between the two. The backyard is easily becoming a true extension of the home, expanding your livable, usable space and home value.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Customized Outdoor Living Areas How do you personally like to spend time outdoors? Reading, lounging by the pool, playing ball with the kids, or cooking and entertaining? Catering your backyard to your lifestyle and the way you prefer to spend your time, will ensure that you create a usable space for you and your loved ones. Your outdoor living space can become its own destination and possibly the most utilized space in your home. Whether that means adding elements like a bar, an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace, a pool, other water features, or plenty of seating for lounging and entertaining is up to you and how you live. As you design your outdoor living space, make sure it complements or even mirrors your interior selections, making the design cohesive. Also consider the space flow in and out of your house. Think about the way you live and entertain and where it makes the most sense to connect rooms with the outdoors.

64

Creating defined spaces for cooking, outdoor dining, lounging and play areas ensures that you can make the most of both your indoor and outdoor spaces, while combining them for entertaining.

Bringing the Beauty of Nature In No one creates natural beauty better than the Creator of the universe. Bringing artistry indoors with natural textures, colors, patterns, fibers, and materials will appeal to multiple senses and create the feeling of being outside. Greenery is a great way to bring the natural beauty of the outdoors to your interior, but it is not the only way. Think of all the parts of the Earth that you love. There are so many varied products now that are natural and beautiful. Consider grass cloth wallpaper or tile, natural stone countertops and flooring, and rustic wood planks incorporated in ceiling beams or shelving. Don’t underestimate the design power of windows and natural light as they are possibly the easiest and most functional way to invite natural beauty and warmth into your home.

LUXCIOR.com

65

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

How to Create Seamless Transitions If you are looking to enhance both your indoor and outdoor spaces, windows and doorways are a wonderful way to really merge your spaces and create large open areas. Full wall windows and larger windowed doorways add visual flow, natural light and function as they are easily opened for entertaining. Motorized shades are becoming more common in large open homes as they stay hidden when not in use for an open, minimalist look, but easily closed to control privacy and lighting. Extending the flooring and ceiling materials from the inside to the outside living spaces blends the boundaries and makes it feel like one continuous open space.

66

Large format porcelain tile is a functional and fabulous choice for flooring as it is easy to maintain and mimics natural stone. Lighting and sound are two other aspects to remember as they appeal to different senses and function in blending two different areas. Similar types and intensities of light will help transition from one space to the next and add ambiance. Linking your interior speakers to outdoor speakers can complete the connection. So here’s to some wonderful months of summer ahead! Hoping you can enjoy your home and maximize its function and natural beauty both inside and out.

FLAVORS OF BRAZIL

IN THE HEART OF RIVER OAKS

SIP ' N SAVOR

S

By Gino Frediani

tarting with the name "Gauchos Do Sul" -as the legendary Southern Brazilian cowboys are called-, this addition to Houston's dining scene is a true world-class SouthAmerican tradition with authentic flavor "Do Samba". I'd like to highlight the fact that Gauchos River Oaks is the second restaurant to open after Gauchos Do Sul in the exclusive Vintage Park Plaza -which originally opened its doors in 2016 to become a major success-. Located in the heart of Highland Village and on a third floor overloking Westheimer and the beautifully iluminated palms along the sidewalks through an entire glass wall, the view is an experience of its own, especially as the sun goes down and everything changes into a romantic River Oaks landmark. From the moment you step out of the elevator from the Valet, you know you are in an unconventional place. The team of waiters, in the best style of this cuisine, do not stop circulating around your table. They don't spare any effort in making you feel as comfortable as you can be, and giving you a tour of the wide variety of options at your disposal, from every cut of meat to the wine selection. At Gauchos Do Sul, however, there is a twist to this tradition. They created a different experience: Although every single server is as professional, polite, and as friendly as you would expect from a luxury restaurant, at Gauchos Do Sul you don't have to live with interruptions to your conversation every three minutes, as it happens in all other places. I loved this! How refresing it is to be able to enjoy a romantic dinner and conversation with only a few, necessary interruptions. Managed by Brazilian restauranteur Daison Cima, with decades of experience in the competitive Brazilian steakhouse arena, his credentials alone are a guarantee for a memorable dining experience.

Nothing can match the flavor and tenderness of the Brazilian cuts.

Elegant, safe dining-distancing for a fabulous dining experience

The first thing you will discover is a salad bar unlike many others in town. The variety is wide, the freshness of the ingredients is readily evident, and the flavors and seasonings are unbeatable. It is an experience in itself.

The true experience of a Brazilian restaurant are definitely the meats, served in the characteristic style of carving. Each waiter walks attentively, and near your table with a distinct and juicy cut, fresh from the fire, and quickly customized to your liking.

Brazilian cuisine is as unique as the way it is served. Obviously the cuts, tenderness and flavors of the meats are the signature of this coveted South American style. Houston, situated at the forefront of international gastronomy, has several Brazilian restaurants, but Gauchos definitely has taken the lead.

Although my personal choice is Ribeye, the famous Picanha -noble part of the top sirloin, seasoned with rock salt- continues to be a favorite. Other great options are the "Gaucho Steak", a very lean and flavorful cut of meat seasoned with rock salt; the Texas Kobe Beef, a tender cut with intense flavor and marbling and seasoned with rock salt is a must.

While enjoying your salads and select hot dishes from the salad bar, it all starts with a delicious "pão de queijo" (yucca bread) served with the typical smashed potatoes cooked to perfection and polenta sticks (made of corn).

Lamb Chops and Leg of Lamb -my wife's absolute favorite-, is imported from New Zealand (known for the top quality meats in the world), and is specially marinated with white wine and lemon pepper. The Parmesan Chicken is a grilled chicken, seasoned with lemon pepper and topped with melted parmesan cheese.

For the lovers of seafood, the Grilled Shrimp makes a great choice, marinated with garlic and a delicious homemade seasoning. The South American Pork Sausage comes from Brazil, packed with different flavors and seasoning. Another interesting Brazilian favorite for a sweet contrast is the Grilled Pineapple, made of Tropical Pineapple seasoned with a touch of cinnamon sugar. The wine list includes a range of national and imported brands. However, we chose one of the traditional Brazilian Caipirinhas, a tropical rumbased cocktail, and Guaraná, Brazil's most iconic fruit. Of course, no matter how satisfied you may be, you cannot say you have had a complete Gauchos Do Sul experience without tasting the delicate desserts. The puddings are an absolute sensation.

74

Although the traditionalist would have called for a final tasting of the select coffees, we had to pass on the temptation; it would have been too much pleasure for a single visit. Besides, there is so much to try that we will definitely become regular. The ambience is warm and elegant, providing for a very rewarding dining experience, with a full-bar dividing the two main areas. The private and beautiful Vista Room and the Social Room offer the opportunity to host exclusive corporate events and intimate family gatherings. Gauchos Do Sul is open for dinner only (unfortunately), from 5:00 to 10:00 pm, with a great Happy hour from 4:00 to 6:30 pm. If you are up for a new level of Brazilian "churrasco" meat experience, Gauchos Do Sul is the definite new place to go in River Oaks -and of course in Vintage Park. However, please take a word of caution: You may get addicted.

IMMIGRATION Temporary Protected Status “TPS” AND ITS BENEFITS FOR IMMIGRANTS

T

emporary Protected Status, generally known as TPS, has been around since the 1990s. The term explains it all and it defines an immigration status that is humanitarian, yet temporary in nature. In 1990 Congress established a procedure where the Secretary of Homeland Security has discretion to provide TPS to nationals of a particular country living in the United States, and who are unable to return to their homeland due to: a) ongoing armed conflict such as a civil war; b) an environmental disaster such as flood, earthquake, or hurricane etc.; or c) other extraordinary and temporary conditions in the state that prevent them from returning safely to their homelands.

Additionally, the applicant pays a filing fee and will be scheduled for fingerprinting through an Application Support Center (ASC). ARTURA Amplifying the McLaren driving experience By Gino Frediani

With verified acceleration, the all-new High-Performance Hybrid powertrain in the McLaren Artura sets new benchmarks for performance, building on the levels of high-performance hybrid excellence set by the pioneering McLaren P1TM – the world’s first hybrid hypercar – and the Speedtail Hyper-GT. The Artura’s advanced petrol-electric powertrain delivers an unrivalled combination of throttle-response, acceleration and electric-only, zero-emissions capability. It has been engineered to ensure the allnew McLaren supercar excels across the full spectrum of driving experiences, from everyday urban journeys to track day sessions. Minimizing weight was key to the design of the all-new powertrain. This is hugely important in an electrified supercar, as well as being absolutely aligned with McLaren’s philosophy of super-lightweight engineering that is fundamental to the performance, agility and driver engagement inherent in every McLaren. Breaking with the V8 convention established with the first supercar from McLaren Automotive, the 12C, at the heart of the Artura is an allnew, 3.0-liter V6 internal combustion engine. The 120-degree, twinturbocharged M630 unit not only delivers unrivalled performance, it also allows the most compact packaging possible. A 180-degree angle was considered but dismissed because it would raise the height of the crankshaft and therefore the center of gravity of the car. The wide angle of the V6 cylinders allows the turbochargers to sit within the banks in a ‘hot vee’ configuration, which also benefits efficiency as they sit within a straighter - and therefore less restrictive – exhaust layout. Generating 671bhp and 531lb ft of torque, the all-new V6 engine is 7.5in shorter and 8.7in narrower than McLaren’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 – and also 110lbs lighter.

92

While the configuration of the all-new engine is key to the Artura’s powertrain packaging, it is the innovative technology within that provides the biggest gains in lightweighting and performance. The cylinder head and block utilize 3D printed cores, allowing uncompromised precision cooling, including a micro-compact 0.08in cooling passage between the cylinders. The block has directly coated parent bores rather than separate coated liners, into which fuel is injected at 350bar pressure. The Artura’s V6 engine is designed not just for compact packaging and efficiency, but also to increase driver engagement. Shared crank pins enable a very short and stiff crankshaft that allows the M630 to redline at a thrilling 8500rpm. It’s also a very refined engine, designed with the chain drive at the rear and with ancillary noises reduced so that the occupants only hear the V6’s distinctive intake and exhaust note, routed via Gasoline Particulate Filters to reduce emissions. The V6 engine powers the rear wheels via an all-new eight-speed seamless shift transmission that has also been designed for optimizing packaging. The length of the gear cluster has been reduced by 1.6in, helped by the use of a nested clutch rather than a parallel unit and also the removal of a reverse gear. This function now achieved by the Artura’s E-motor spinning in the opposite direction. The ultracompact motor is fully integrated within the transmission bell-housing, delivering torque in-fill and linear acceleration via an E-differential to the rear wheels. The Axial Flux design of the E-motor is another Artura benchmark. It is similar in size to a McLaren brake disc and at just 34lbs it is only a little heavier than a conventional iron rotor component, yet it can generate up to 94bhp and 166lb ft of torque, as well as enable journeys of up to 19 miles in near-silent pure EV mode*, attributes that are ideal for city driving or early-morning starts.

BOY'S TOYS Providing the electric-only capability is a 7.4kWh Five-module Lithium Ion energy dense battery pack. Fully-integrated into the Artura’s McLaren Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) chassis, the battery pack is positioned low-down in the car behind the driver, incorporated into the floor and protected on three sides by the main carbon fibre structure and from behind by the engine. This positioning also helps to optimize both center of gravity and the polar moment of inertia, benefitting dynamic agility. The hybrid battery sits on a cooling manifold, which is shared with the new electric heating, ventilation and air conditioning system also used to control air temperature in the cabin. Incorporating technology first developed for the McLaren Speedtail, the batteries are thermally controlled using dielectric oil – a technology also used to keep the E-motor at operating temperatures that deliver the highest level of performance. True to the Artura engineers’ determination to optimize packaging and weight, the battery management unit sits alongside the modules, with the power distribution unit (PDU) integrated into the battery. An integrated Power Unit (IPU) acts as a DC/DC converter for the vehicle’s 12v system, further reducing weight by removing the need for a separate alternator and on-board battery-charger. Taking just 2.5 hours to charge from zero to 80% using an EVSE socket, the battery is carefully managed so that it never truly runs out of power; there is always something in reserve for reversing or starting the engine, even when parked for extended periods. This management process also ensures that the battery remains in peak condition and accordingly the unit is warranted for 6 years or 50,000 miles. An Artura driver can adjust how the electric motor is deployed to prioritize range or power, or choose to shut off the internal combustion engine for silent running. Energy harvesting is achieved purely from the combustion engine in order to maintain brake pedal feel, yet the battery can be charged from low to 80% full within minutes under normal driving conditions. This ensures that the Artura is always ready to switch to electric-only mode, an option that adds discretion and enhanced economy to the driving experience, as well as reduced CO2 emissions at just 129 g/km*. Additionally, the Artura’s High-Performance Hybrid powertrain contributes to significant ownership benefits above and beyond the performance and driving engagement it delivers: a comprehensive 5-year vehicle and 6-year hybrid battery warranty are standard for Artura customers, as is a 5-year roadside assistance plan. •

CORVETTE STINGRAY The New American Supercar For nearly 70 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has been among the automotive world’s most recognizable icons, one that classic car collectors have consistently coveted not only as a savvy investment, but also for the unmatched driving experience afforded by this Americanmade V8. With the high-performance automotive era, though, with high-priced European supercars dominating the road and the buzz, the Corvette was barely a part of the conversation. Clearly, the model needed a revamp, including fresh design cues and cutting-edge technology capable of competing for market-share alongside most recognized exotics. Following years of anticipation and speculation, the all-new 2020 Corvette Stingray made its debut in the summer of 2019. I was very impressed by the striking body lines and bold supercar vibe of the new all-American Corvette. The visual "wow" factor is definitely there; however, the obvious question is whether the Corvette’s new midengine C8 platform delivers on performance.

98

With a starting price at a fraction of the cost of the European contenders, can the new model actually compete with the likes of Lamborghini, McLaren or Ferrari? The answer is a definite "YES"! The heart of the stunning Stingray is its new, naturally aspirated 6.2L small block V8 (dubbed LT2), capable of producing 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the optional Z51 package (a must-have upgrade given the vehicle’s exceptionally low starting price and performance potential). The new motor has been harmoniously synced to an eight-speed dualclutch transmission with paddle shifters. The Stingray’s innovative midengine configuration launches it from zero to sixty in a staggering 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of up to 194 mph. The new model also features a variety of driving modes to accommodate drivers’ personal preferences, including the unexpectedly smooth Tour mode that turns the snarling American supercar into an exceptionally comfortable daily cruiser. A right turn of the control knob presents

Sport and Track modes, the latter of which quickly became our go-to setting, with both modes opening the exhaust baffles and stiffening up the suspension.

Corvette has featured a hardtop convertible option, with the drop top operating in merely 16 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph while still maintaining the vehicle’s rear trunk space, even with the roof down.

On the inside, the Corvette features a gorgeous driver-centric cabin design, with cleverly placed buttons for driver and passenger climate control settings along the center console.

The new C8 Corvette has already received massive acclaim, winning multiple Car of the Year awards in addition to taking home the GTLM class win in the 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Yet even with all the industry accolades and racing recognition, I have to admit, at such a competitive asking price I was skeptical of the new Corvette’s real-world performance. Having tested many of the industry’s finest supercars, I was waiting for the new Corvette to fall short of expectations – but it never happened. Each opportunity to get behind the wheel was an exhilarating experience, and performance never faltered. Whether on the city streets or the open highway, the Stingray did much more than just turn heads: it somehow managed to break the mold on what it means to be a supercar. This isn’t just a high-priced piece of art you store in a garage for fear of adding too many miles. This is a car that was meant to be driven, every day, and driven fast!

A racing inspired hexagonal steering wheel allows for easy viewing access to the model’s 12-inch digital instrument panel, while the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is strategically angled toward the driver. Various interior trim levels come in a variety of colors and options of leather, micro suede, and carbon fiber, as well as three different seating choices. Overall, the new interior is a substantial improvement over previous versions and far exceeded our expectations. The new Stingray is available as both a coupe and a convertible, with nearly identical performance metrics. This also marks the first time a

TT

he year 2003 changed my life forever. Charles, my only son, was hit head on and left dying in the middle of the road by a drunk driver who never stopped or even looked back. Charles was life-flighted to the ICU Trauma Unit and hung on for his life for several months. With a contusion on the left side of his brain, nerve damage in the left eye, nine broken ribs, two punctured lungs, laceration of the spleen, eight broken vertebras, all spinous process sheered from the spine, a broken collar bone, brachial plexus injury, four severed nerves on the spinal cord resulting in paralization of the left side, an inability of moving his left arm, hand, and fingers, and a constant pulling of his spine to the left, my son was left in horrible pain twenty-four hours, seven days a week. The financial impact was devastating. We had to sell everything we owned and begged for donations from individuals and organizations. Three months after the accident, Charles needed a nerve graph transfer surgery. The doctor promised that after 7 years (when the nerves that were rerouted from the nerve graph transfer surgery grew down to his paralyzed fingertips) he would perform a free muscle transfer surgery. To date, the doctor has not performed the surgery promised to Charles. Charles and I have struggled for years. A few weeks before the accident our car was stolen. Thankfully, we were blessed with a bicycle that I rode to clean houses, pick up small groceries, and fill Charles prescriptions. We barely had enough to eat but we survived on food vouchers from churches.

102

Then, a lump of petals….! Feeling disheartened and overwhelmed by all the obstacles of our lives, I sat on the ground and sobbed uncontrollably. My heart was breaking for all that my son and I were going through and I felt so all alone. Then, a lump of petals from a vine fell at my feet. I picked up the lump of petals and realized they were attached to each other. I separated the petals and counted three in total. The petals looked just like a butterfly but without the legs and antennas. From my research, the lump of petals that fell at my feet that day, is a plant called The Butterfly Vine, Mascagnia macroptera. At that moment, my life was changed! I got up from my state of despair as inspiration gave me a renewed sense of purpose. I had an idea and so I got to work. Once home, I attached a magnet to the plant’s petal using hot glue and applied paint and gloss to my new creation. I put each creation in baggies and on my bicycle I rode, selling my plant vines to neighbors, grocery stores, beauty shops, from the street corner, and anywhere I felt people might buy my beautiful creation, The Painted Petals. This was the only money we had to live on, buy groceries, pay rent, buy prescriptions, and pay utility bills.

LIFESTYLE Eighteen years later! Today, Charles is still partially paralyzed. However, we are always seeking effective avenues to ease the constant inabilities and pain he endures. Charles lives on his own in California and is a qualified Cannabis Compliance Grower. He has helped thousands of young and old with ailments and diseases using different cannabis oils with amazing results. In 2020, we started stem cell injections and we are hoping for the best.

A Butterfly’s Cycle of Life! Telling you my son’s story and realizing how our life transitions can be compared to the many stages of the Butterfly’s Cycle of Life. • Butterflies look for their host plants, relying on humans and our environment to lay their eggs on their host plants. • The fragile, tiny caterpillar hatches from this tiny egg if a human or our environment does not destroy their host plant. • Just hatched caterpillar eats its tiny eggshell, again hoping humans or our environment has not destroyed the tiny egg or caterpillar as it hatches. • The caterpillar starts to eat again hoping its food source is not destroyed by pesticides, humans, or our environment. All at the same time having to worry about predators that can kill and destroy them before it becomes a large caterpillar. • The caterpillar starts to make a chrysalis using a lot of strength still hoping predators, pesticides, humans, and our environment does not kill them. • Caterpillars turns to mush inside its chrysalis and then one day it miraculously forms a butterfly in its chrysalis. • It hatches making sure its wings do not touch anything so the wings can grow and dry after hours of hanging on its chrysalis shell. • When its wings are dry and it feels strong enough to fly, it flutters beautifully away to find nectar plants so it can eat, again relying on humans and our environment for food.

We are similar to Butterflies! Our cycle of life is similar to the beautiful, fragile butterfly. We are born and have to rely on our parents to feed, clothe, clean, love, and keep us from danger and harm. Most families fight over finances, lack of food, clothing, and a place to call home. Some do not have a home (chrysalis) to live in and to be protected from predators, hardships,

beatings, drugs, and death. Some children are abused and watch their mothers being abused. If children are blessed to enter into adulthood, to become strong, taught how to help others, have good morals, and serve God, then they have all they need to blossom into beautiful adults. They are then ready to flutter off into life to start the cycle all over again, perfecting it better and stronger each time.

The "Blooming Butterflies" Organization Our study and deeper understanding began culminating into a profound perspective of the endangered species - Monarch Butterfly. We travelled to Mexico to observe the migration reservations and were amazed at the beauty of the beautiful, bright orange and black Monarch butterflies soaring as the sunlight would shine on their colorful wingspans in the morning. The experience left us in awe – we felt like we were standing in Heaven in amazement of God’s resplendent beauty. With a clear focus, in February 2010, we created our nonprofit, Blooming Butterflies. Our Mission is relational - Make a Difference in the life cycle of the Endangered Monarch Butterflies and Endangered Honeybees while Making a Difference in human lives feeling lost, struggling to survive, and in inability to flutter their own wings, just like Charles and Me!

The "How"! We partnered with Designer Diva Resale, the largest designer-brand consignment store in Texas, so we could service twelve battered women and children shelters with clothes, shoes, hygiene products, sheets, towels, blankets, coats, food and much more. Since 2010 we have helped not only the twelve individually owned shelters for battered women and children, but we organize monthly garage sales sellingfor $1 good clothing, shoes, coats, and much more that we have received as donations. We have helped many organizations filling hundreds of shipping containers of clothing, food, furniture, hygiene products, among many other things. The organization representatives raises the money to ship these containers to their countries such as Haiti, Philippines, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Africa, and México.

March 2020 The pandemic hit our world March 2020 and at the same time The Designer Diva Resale 20,352-sq. ft. store lease expired. After six (6) years, we had to quickly move to a new location. We had looked for several years at many buildings, properties, and warehouses. Finally, May 26, 2020 we found the land, building, warehouse and our destination home for Designer Diva Resale and Blooming Butterflies Enchanted Gardens.

How You can Help! While we are undertaking and working hard on our huge project; waiting on our new landlord to complete the preparation of our building and clear the land for our Enchanted Gardens, we need your help to accomplish the goals set before us so we can help so many people in Texas and around the world. Helping us will be your project and accomplishments too. You will be a part of our team creating a destination place for all to enjoy and help others. Would you please consider helping by donating -tax deductible- any amount from $1 to $10 million? No amount is too small as any amount will help us achieve the short and long-term goals set before us. Your donation will have an impact on many communities, states and countries and will be a huge part of the key to solving the creation that will, without a doubt help many people hurting, sad, starting over, needing to learn a new trade/career or just needing friends to comfort them: Teaching them the life-cycle of the butterfly and relating it to our own lifecycle.

The Plan SHORT TERM GOAL: To raise $250,000 to build the gardens, greenhouses, buy butterfly weed plants, nectar plants, dirt, mulch, build a migration hut and a gift shop. There are many young and old who would love to help and volunteer.

104

LONG TERM GOAL: To purchase the five acres with the 60,000 square feet building and warehouse with the adjoining 2.5 acres to build educational buildings to teach all ages to grow butterfly weed, nectar plants, raise butterflies and honeybees. We also want to help others, again young and old to learn to open their own business of their dreams, how to operate it, get funding, grants and help their self esteem and become confident in themselves and their business. This long-term goal we would need to raise $10 million dollars to complete these goals. Your donation will have an impact truly helping others and our endangered environment and species. This will be the ultimate Houston destination place.

DOUBLING DOWN on feeling great and looking fabulous

!

After 12 months of almost complete lock-down and unaccomplished goals, we owe it to ourselves to double down on everything we couldn't do. Treat yourself to your best you yet!

METABOLISM

What exactly is it? Courtesy Mayo Clinic

Here's what you need to know about the connection between metabolism and weight — and how exercise helps. Metabolism is defined as the bodily processes needed to maintain life. But when you hear the word "metabolism" used today, it's usually in reference to weight issues. You may hear someone say, "I can't lose weight because I have a slow metabolism." While there's some truth to this, other factors — such as how much you eat and exercise — play a much bigger role in your weight than your metabolism does. And while it's true that how much lean body mass you have can affect how many calories you burn at rest, its effect is limited — in part, because you can build only so much lean muscle by strength training. HERE ARE SOME OTHER FACTS ABOUT METABOLISM. What it is Though the process of metabolism, your body turns the food you eat into the energy it needs. It's a vital process for all living things, not just humans.

108

What can affect your metabolism Some medications can affect your metabolism — either dangerously speeding it up or slowing it down. Eating breakfast every day can jump-start your metabolism Weight loss — especially when it's rapid — actually slows your metabolism because it takes less energy for your body to function at a lower weight. So, as you lose weight, you need to take in fewer calories or get more physical activity to burn more calories to keep losing pounds. Age can slow your metabolism. In general, as you age, you gain fat and lose muscle. Some people also become less active. However, you can do the opposite and take on more physical activity to make up for your slower metabolism. The bottom line You can help your metabolism — and your odds of weight-loss success — by changing your energy balance, or the balance between what you consume and what you burn off, through a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

STRATEGIES

to help you control those EATING TRIGGERS Courtesy Mayo Clinic

Do certain situations cause you to eat too much? Identify your problem spots and take action with these tips.

1 Identify the enemy

Identifying the situations that trigger poor eating habits can help you develop strategies to overcome them. Do any of these areas trip you up? Try these simple solutions to inspire healthy changes in your everyday life.

2 Activities Situation: When you watch TV or read, do you always have a snack at hand? Do you eat at your desk while you work or while you're preparing dinner? Solution: It's all too easy to take in excess calories without realizing it. To change your habits, keep track of everything you eat — and where and when you eat it — for a few days. It can be eye-opening! Once you become more aware of your snacking, you may find it easier to stop the nibbling or substitute other behaviors for it.

3 Favored foods Situation: Are there some foods that you can't eat in moderation, such as cookies or potato chips? Do you find that the sight or smell of certain foods tempts you to overeat? Solution: Keep exposure to these foods to a minimum. Don't keep tempting treats at home — if it's in the house, it's in your mouth! However, don't deny yourself your favorites, either. Portion out a small amount — but not when you're overly hungry, so you'll be more likely to take more. Split a favorite treat with a friend when eating out, or buy yourself a small portion every couple of weeks.

4 Time of day Situation: Are there certain times of the day when you're more susceptible to overeating? Do you crave a snack after work or a late-night bowl of ice cream?

110

Solution: Identify your vulnerable times of day. If hunger is a factor, keep yourself well-stocked with handy healthy foods, such as mandarin oranges, walnuts or whole-wheat crackers. If eating at certain times is simply a habit, find a substitute, such as a cup of chamomile tea or a relaxing bath.

5 Social settings Situation: Do you eat more when you're around certain people? Do you snack anytime your partner does? Do social outings lead to nonstop noshing? Solution: Social eating patterns can undermine weight-loss efforts. Recognize where and when social influence plays a role in your eating habits and decide what you want to change. Keep in mind that you can affect when and what others eat as well — take the lead!

6 Physical factors Situation: Does skipping breakfast cause you to lose control of your eating? When you're tired, do you turn to junk food for energy? Solution: Following your meal plan — including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks — can help keep hunger under control. Regularly getting a good night's sleep helps with weight management, too.

7 Emotions Situation: Do certain feelings cause you to snack — boredom, loneliness, stress or anxiety? Do you use certain foods to self-soothe? Solution: Learn to separate food from mood. Monitor your mood, and strive to distinguish true hunger from emotion-driven eating. When emotions are high, use other coping strategies, such as calling a friend or taking a walk.

FLEXIBILITY

Stretch your way to better health Courtesy of Mayo Clinic

B

Warm up first. Stretching muscles when they're cold increases your risk of injury, including pulled muscles. Warm up by walking while gently pumping your arms, or do a favorite exercise at low intensity for five minutes. If you only have time to stretch once, do it after you exercise — when your muscles are warm and more receptive to stretching. And when you do stretch, start slowly.

elieve it or not, stretching is a critical part of any exercise program. Keep your body healthy with these pointers for a good stretch.

You might be thinking that it's hard to carve out time in your schedule for exercise, let alone stretching. But most cardio and strengthtraining programs cause your muscles to tighten. That's why it's important to stretch regularly to keep your body functioning well.

Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds. It takes time to lengthen tissues safely. Hold your stretches for at least 30 seconds — and up to 60 seconds for a really tight muscle or problem area. Then repeat the stretch on the other side. For most muscle groups, a single stretch is usually sufficient.

Regular stretching Increases flexibility, which makes daily tasks easier

Don't bounce. Bouncing as you stretch repeatedly gets your muscles out of the stretch position and doesn’t allow them to relax, making you less flexible and more prone to pain.

Improves range of motion of your joints, which helps keep you mobile Improves circulation Promotes better posture Helps relieve stress by relaxing tense muscles Helps prevent injury, especially if your muscles or joints are tight

Stretching essentials Keep these key points in mind: Target major muscle groups. When you're stretching, focus on your calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck and shoulders. Also stretch muscles and joints that you routinely use at work or play.

112

Focus on a pain-free stretch. Expect to feel tension while you're stretching. If it hurts, you've gone too far. Back off to the point where you don't feel any pain, then hold the stretch. Relax and breathe freely. Don't hold your breath while you're stretching.

Fit stretching into your schedule As a general rule, stretch whenever you exercise. If you don't exercise regularly, you may want to stretch at least three times a week to maintain flexibility. If you have a problem area, such as tightness in the back of your leg, you may want to stretch every day or even twice a day. Think about ways you can fit stretching into your daily schedule.

For example: Do some stretches after your morning shower or bath. That way, you can shorten your warm-up routine because the warm water will raise muscle temperature and prepare your muscles for stretching. Stretch before getting out of bed. Try a few gentle head-to-toe stretches by reaching your arms above your head and pointing your toes. Sign up for a yoga or tai chi class. You're more likely to stick with a program if you're registered for a class.

What you should know before you stretch You can stretch anytime, anywhere — in your home, at work or when you're traveling. But if you have a chronic condition or an injury, you may need to alter your approach. For example, if you have a strained muscle, stretching it as you usually do may cause further harm. Talk with your doctor or a physical therapist about the best way for you to stretch.

CULTURE TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO

O

Italy's Little Jewel By Rick Steves

O

f all the Italian hill towns, Civita di Bagnoregio is a favorite Although not as well known as Siena or Assisi, this breathtaking l ittle jewel has escaped the modern age mostly because of its location. The town teeters atop a crest rising high above a vast canyon governed by wind and erosion. The saddle of earth that once connected Civita to its bigger and busier sister town, Bagnoregio, has worn away. Photographs around town show the old donkey path that once linked the hamlets. Today, the only way in or out is by a footbridge. Supplies are ferried in on mopeds. The main entrance is a huge stone passageway, cut by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago and decorated in the 12th century with a Romanesque arch. Passing through the portal, you enter another world — one stuck in the Middle Ages. You can feel history in the smooth cobblestones under your feet.

116

Inside the gate, the charms of Civita are subtle. Those searching for arcade tourism won't know where to look. There are no lists of attractions, orientation tours, or museum hours. It's just Italy. Civita is an artist's dream, a town in the nude. Each lane and footpath holds a surprise. Ivy drapes over arches and scrambles up walls; potted flowers parade across balconies. The warm stone walls glow, and each stairway is dessert to a sketch pad or camera. For me, exploring Civita is a cultural scavenger hunt. Rounding one quiet corner, I encounter the stately facade of a Renaissance palace with a fancy wooden door and grand windows leading to — thin air. The rest of the building fell away into the valley decades ago, riding a chunk of the town's ever-eroding rock. Pondering the view, I'm reminded that slowly but surely this town will succumb to the march of geological time.

The footpath leading to Civita di Bagnoregio. This enchanting travel through time twenty-five centuries into Italy's past makes an unforgettable stop between Florence and Rome.

118

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE The Swiss-cheese ground beneath Civita is honeycombed with ancient cellars, perfect for storing wine, and cisterns for collecting rainwater. Many date from Etruscan times. A pre-Roman tunnel below the town doubled as a bomb shelter in World War II. Civita has one famous son, St. Bonaventure, the "second founder" of the Franciscan order. His home is long gone, but the basic grid plan of the old town survives, with a church as its centerpiece. The identity of this holy place of worship has rotated with the centuries: An Etruscan temple, then a Roman temple, rose here before today's Catholic church. Ancient pillars from those pagan temples stand like giant bar stools just outside the church door. To beat the heat, I like to step inside and enjoy a quiet moment in a pew. The main piazza is the heartbeat and pride of the village, the spot where festivals and processions start, visitors are escorted, and the town's past is honored. Wild donkey races take place here in June and September, and at Christmastime, a living nativity scene is enacted in the square.

Medieval houses in Civita di Bagnoregio.

Civita's young people are gone, lured away by the dazzle of more modern places where they can take part in Italy's cosmopolitan parade. And as old people become frail, they move into apartments in nearby Bagnoregio. With the permanent population dwindling, Civita is becoming a weekend getaway for wealthy urbanites, who are slowly buying up the place. The remaining full-time families cater to visitors. To enrich your experience of this rustic place, be an extrovert. Poke around and talk to people. I take a seat in the piazza, and smile and nod at each passerby. It's a social jigsaw puzzle, and each person fits. Cats, the fastest-growing segment of the population, scratch their itches on age-old stones. Nothing is abandoned in this town. At one restaurant, the owner proudly shows off a huge olive press that is about 1,500 years old. Until the 1960s, blindfolded donkeys trudged in a circle to operate the press, crushing olives. Now it is the centerpiece of the restaurant, which sells bruschetta to day-trippers. Bread toasted on an open fire, drizzled with the finest oil, rubbed with pungent garlic, and topped with chopped tomatoes — these edible souvenirs stay on your breath for hours and in your memory forever.

Piazza San Donato in Civita di Bagnoregio.

I love my cool, late evenings in Civita. After dinner, I wander back to sit on the church steps with people who've been doing exactly this under the same moon, night after night, year after year. Children play on the piazza until midnight in the light of the lampposts. I listen to the sounds of rural Italy, mixed with voices and fortissimo crickets. Towering high above, Civita feels wellfortified against change. _____

We’ve reinvented the way people think about supercar ownership and replaced it with a whole new concept. You’re no longer shackled with single-car ownership because now you can have them all for less than the cost of owning a single car. Choose a Lamborghini for a cruise through Uptown A Ferrari for a trip to the beach, or a McLaren for a quick blast through the skyscrapers. The choice is yours! 832.726.1940 | freedomsupercars.com
