A New Concept in The Galleria Area AFFORDABLE LUXURY HOTELS By Linda Strickland The Galleria / Uptown area is known as Houston's primary attraction for international, business and leisure travelers. Hotels, dining and shopping, it can all be found here and stretching into River Oaks. With Houston being the largest city in Texas, and the fourth-largest in America, it is full of possibilities, inspiration, culture and excitement.

GLOBAL DESIGN: The reason I named my design firm Eklektik is because I love merging different ideas and styles from around the world. One of my passions is keeping updated on the latest international design ideas and products through travel, but I also love and respect the influence of local talent in Houston. Because of the digital world we live in, design is increasingly more global. We can see what is happening in all parts of the world instantly, and it is fascinating to discover what different designs come from different ways of living.
We also have easier accessibility to products from around the world, leading to a more global design aesthetic. Whether you live in a high rise in the city or a ranch on the outskirts, you can infuse your personal style into your home and add your own colorful piece to the patchwork that is Houston.
DESIGN INSPIRATION: Developing what interior designers call the “design eye”— looking for inspiration in everything around you—is in part a gift but can also be refined through experience. I work hard to not only bring great experience to my designs, but also something current and unique to each client. I always tell my clients not to just copy something you like. Take the time to study and come up with your own look. That’s not to say you can’t incorporate things into your designs that you are inspired by but add your own unique perspective on it. With more than 145 languages spoken and the fusion of food, art and community from around the world, Houston is full of opportunity for inspiration. Wherever you are in the city or whatever you are participating in, open your ‘design eye’ and you will be amazed at all the variety Houston has to offer. Here are a few examples of where I find inspiration in my hometown.
NATURE AND PEOPLE: I am constantly inspired by nature. Some of the greatest color pallets come from a sunrise or sunset, a beautiful garden or seasonal changes, all of which the greatest Creator of all has given us to inspire and lift us. Beauty can be found everywhere. The simplest of forms can inspire, and Houston boasts variety in landscape and nature.
This new custom home on the outskirts of Houston is a blend of rustic elements with a Texas Hill Country meets Tuscan style. Mixing finishes in the bedroom adds visual interest and texture with natural elements and colors of the Texas landscape.

My clients are my biggest inspiration. They are each unique and bring their own perspective to a project. It is my job to capture them in their home design, and I love that. I’m inspired as I get to know each individual client, their family culture and what is important to them. Together we can make magic happen and really enjoy the design process together as we create a cohesive design that is not only beautiful, but functions on every level and enhances their living experience. Every job is an opportunity to learn and grow a new friendship.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN ART AND FOOD: Houston has great restaurants. I would put it up against NYC any day. We love our dining in Houston, and we are lucky to have so much to choose from. One of my favorites is MAD, here in Houston. It is a sensory overload, but in a great way. Their first restaurant, BCN, is completely different in design—small, intimate, and almost sedate in feel. Both have amazing food, and I highly recommend them. I also love exploring dive bars! They have a story. I love it when things are not perfect but are unique and have their own set of nuances. They have the most interesting people and food! We are blessed to live in a city that has a great cultural scene and is committed to the arts, both visual and performance. The Menil Collection is an artistic treasure here in Houston. I love the grounds, buildings, exhibits, and just the way I feel when I am there.
The city skyline is art itself and provides an exquisite backdrop for this living space where the color and aesthetic of city life is highlighted in the furniture, lighting and accessories.

HOUSTON SPIRIT: I LOVE Houston. I love the giving spirit of this amazing city. Houston has a heart as big as Texas. We have been through hard things together, and we come out stronger and more committed to our community. I try to live up to that. What I do as a designer is not rocket science, but it can make a big difference in the way someone lives, and I do not take that lightly. I have been blessed in so many aspects of my life and the way to show true gratitude is to share and support projects and charities that lift others and build our beautiful city. Quietly doing for others is a great way to use your power and to receive the greatest inspiration in designing your life and surroundings.

Only a few can actually say they have mastered the complicated world of 3D animations, although there is a much higher need and demand for 3D creators than for formula drivers.

It is truly international, which is why people from all over the world call Houston home. Many foreign nationals choose to invest in Houston because of the great opportunities it affords. The investor visa they qualify for generally depends on the amount of their investment. Some individuals come to this country and to Houston with an EB-5 investor visa. While the EB-5 visa is a great option for those who are prepared for a very significant investment, and it provides a path to residency and ultimately to U.S. citizenship, it is not for everyone as it requires a minimum investment of $500,000. That is why many foreign

nationals choose differently and come to the United States through another investor visa option, known as the Treaty Trader (E-1), or Treaty Investor (E-2) visa. The E-1 and E-2 visas are for citizens of countries with which the United States maintains treaties of commerce and navigation. The purpose of the investor visa is for a foreign national to come to the United States to engage in substantial trade, including trade in services or technology, principally between the United States and the treaty country; or develop and direct the operations of an enterprise in which one has invested a substantial amount of capital.
Treaty Treader E-1 Visa requirements, generally: •
You must be a citizen of a treaty country.
• The trading firm for which you plan to come to the United States must have the nationality of the treaty country, meaning persons with the treaty country’s nationality must own at least 50 percent of the enterprise. • The international trade must be substantial, meaning that there is a sizable and continuing volume of trade. • More than 50 percent of the international trade involved must be between the United States and the treaty country. • Trade means the international exchange of goods, services, and technology. • You must be an essential employee, employed in a supervisory or executive capacity, or possess highly specialized skills essential to the efficient operation of the firm. To qualify as a Treaty Investor E-2 Visa, generally: • The investor, either a person, partnership or corporate entity, must have the citizenship of a treaty country. • If a business, at least 50 percent of the business must be owned by persons with the treaty country’s nationality. • The investment must be substantial, with investment funds or assets committed and irrevocable. • The investment must be a real operating enterprise, an active commercial or entrepreneurial undertaking. • It must generate significantly more income than just to provide a living, or it must have a significant economic impact in the United States. • You must have control of the funds, and the investment must be at risk in the commercial sense. •
You must be coming to the United States to develop
and direct the enterprise. If you are not the principal investor, you must be considered an essential employee, employed in a supervisory, executive, or highly specialized skill capacity. When an individual is outside the United States, the individual must apply to a U.S Embassy or Consulate in the home country for the E-1 or the E-2 visa. While within the United States an applicant may be able to request that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) change the status to an E-1 or E-2 visa. Houston is made better by successful investments of immigrants from all over the world. As an immigrant and as an Albanian, however, I must speak about the Albanian community in Houston and their successful investments. It is impossible to mention them all, but I am very fond of the Brother’s Pizzeria with seven locations throughout our city, not only for their pizza which is one of a kind, but because they do so much for the Houston community. You can find the owners at any given day delivering pizza and providing free lunches for the firefighters or to the medical personnel. I am also very impressed with Underground Hall, located in Houston’s beautiful downtown, which opened in the midst of the pandemic, and is flourishing. Visit Moonshine Deck in the Houston Heights, and Good Times Café on Travis Street, for great food and Happy Hours. I can’t wait for the opening of D’Alba Draft and Kitchen in Garden Oaks and Oak Forest this summer. These newly started and very cool and hip cafes and restaurants are a blend of the multicultural food in Houston and the Albanian hospitality at its best. The most interesting parts about those businesses, however, are the stories of immigrants behind them, and their courage to do something great in our city that we all love, even during a pandemic. _____

Lamborghini Squadra Corse just introduced the SC20, a unique specimen of an open-top track car type-approved for road use. The SC20 is the second one-off engineered by the motorsport department and designed by Centro Stile in Sant’Agata Bolognese: the car was created following the customer’s wishes, who was involved in the project from the very first drawings by Lamborghini’s designers. The common goal was to build a unique vehicle, extreme in its design and performance, and able to combine aerodynamic solutions taken from racing Lamborghinis incorporating unprecedented lines and exclusive details. “Two years after the SC18 Alston, the SC20 was a new, intriguing challenge, introduced when the end of the pandemic was still quite uncertain. The chief sources of inspiration were the Diablo VT Roadster, Aventador J, Veneno Roadster and Concept S, and the result is a dramatic

combination of creativity and racing attitude,” commented Mitja Borkert, Head of Design Lamborghini Centro Stile. The carbon fiber body was polished and slicked down by hand by the Lamborghini aerodynamic engineers to deliver optimal airflow for both performance and the cockpit’s occupants, ensuring comfortable open-air driving even at high speeds. The pronounced front splitter is framed by two fins and the air intakes on the front hood are inspired by those of the Huracán GT3 EVO, while the sculpted body sides reflect the solutions adopted on the Essenza SCV12. The muscular rear is topped by a large carbon fiber wing that can be set in three different positions: Low, Medium and High Load. The SC20 features exclusive details starting from the body colors on a Bianco Fu (white) base, created for the customer,

on which the Blu Cepheus (blue) livery stands out. The same shade is found in the interior, alternating with Nero Cosmus (black) and Bianco Leda (white). The most significant element of the passenger compartment is the visible carbon fiber used for the dashboard cover, rear wall, door panels, center console and steering wheel trim, in addition to the monocoque. Carbon fiber is also used for the shells of the seats upholstered in Alcantara and leather. The door handles on the other hand, are machined from solid aluminum. Lastly, the air vents are created using 3D printing technology at the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory. Maurizio Reggiani, Chief Technical Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, stated, “The SC20 is a combination of sophisticated engineering, Italian craftsmanship, sportiness and advanced design. It is also an example of applying our V12 engine and carbon fiber to a radical open-top vehicle that unmistakably carries the Lamborghini DNA.”
Its engine is based on Lamborghini’s flagship V12: the 6,498 cm3 aspirated twelve-cylinder that delivers 770 CV at 8,500 rpm and develops 720 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm. It is managed through the optimized seven-speed Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) gearbox. The power is discharged to the ground by the four-wheel drive system with central electronic differential, and the Pirelli PZero Corsa tires are mounted on single-nut aluminum rims, 20 inches in front and 21 inches at the rear. Giorgio Sanna, Head of Lamborghini Motorsport, commented, “The SC20 is one more technical and styling exercise that associates Squadra Corse experience with Lamborghini design, masterfully interpreted by our Centro Stile based on the customer’s wishes, which was the focus of the project during the entire vehicle development and construction process.”

Triglycerides are an important measure of heart health. Here's why triglycerides matter — and what to do if your triglycerides are too high. If you've been keeping an eye on your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, there's something else you might need to monitor: your triglycerides. Having a high level of triglycerides, a type of fat (lipid) in your blood, can increase your risk of heart disease. However, the same lifestyle choices that promote overall health can help lower your triglycerides, too. What are triglycerides? Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly "easy" calories like carbohydrates and fats, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia).

What's considered normal? A simple blood test can reveal whether your triglycerides fall into a healthy range. Normal — Less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or less than 1.7 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) Borderline high — 150 to 199 mg/dL (1.8 to 2.2 mmol/L) High — 200 to 499 mg/dL (2.3 to 5.6 mmol/L) Very high — 500 mg/dL or above (5.7 mmol/L or above) Your doctor will usually check for high triglycerides as part of a cholesterol test (sometimes called a lipid panel or lipid profile). What's the difference between triglycerides and cholesterol? Triglycerides and cholesterol are separate types of lipids that circulate in your blood. Triglycerides store unused calories and provide your body with energy, and cholesterol is used to build cells and certain hormones. Because triglycerides and cholesterol can't dissolve in blood, they circulate throughout your body with the help of proteins that transport the lipids (lipoproteins). Why do high triglycerides matter? Although it's unclear how, high triglycerides may contribute to hardening of the arteries or thickening of the artery walls (atherosclerosis) — which increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart disease. Extremely high triglycerides — for example, levels above 1000 mg/dL (11.29 mmol/L) — can also cause acute pancreatitis. High triglycerides are often a sign of other conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, including obesity and metabolic syndrome — a cluster of conditions that includes too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high blood sugar and abnormal cholesterol levels. Sometimes high triglycerides are a sign of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, low levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism), liver or kidney disease, or rare genetic conditions that affect how your body converts fat to energy. High triglycerides could also be a side effect of taking medications such as beta blockers, birth control pills, diuretics or steroids. What's the best way to lower triglycerides? Healthy lifestyle choices are key: Lose weight. If you're overweight, losing 5 to 10 pounds can help lower your triglycerides. Motivate yourself by focusing on the benefits of losing weight, such as more energy and improved health. Cut back on calories. Remember that extra calories are converted to triglycerides and stored as fat. Reducing your calories will reduce triglycerides. Avoid sugary and refined foods. Simple carbohydrates, such as sugar and foods made with white flour, can increase triglycerides. Choose healthier fats. Trade saturated fat found in meats for healthier monounsaturated fat found in plants, such as olive, peanut and canola oils. Substitute fish high in omega-3 fatty acids — such as mackerel and salmon — for red meat.

Limit how much alcohol you drink. Alcohol is high in calories and sugar and has a particularly potent effect on triglycerides. Even small amounts of alcohol can raise triglyceride levels. Exercise regularly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most or all days of the week. Regular exercise can lower triglycerides and boost "good" cholesterol. Take a brisk daily walk, swim laps or join an exercise group. If you don't have time to exercise for 30 minutes, try squeezing it in 10 minutes at a time. Take a short walk, climb the stairs at work, or try some situps or pushups as you watch television. What about medication? If healthy lifestyle changes aren't enough to control high triglycerides, your doctor might recommend some of the following: Statins. Your doctor might prescribe these cholesterol-lowering drugs if you also have low high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good") cholesterol; high low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol; or if you have a history of blocked arteries or diabetes. Examples include atorvastatin (Lipitor) and simvastatin (Zocor). Muscle pain is a potential side effect. Fish oils. Also known as omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil supplements can help lower your triglycerides. High doses are needed, however, so this option is often reserved for people who have triglyceride levels over 500 mg/dL (5.7 mmol/L). Fibrates. Fibrate medications, such as fenofibrate (TriCor, Fenoglide, others) and gemfibrozil (Lopid), also can lower your triglyceride levels. Fibrates seem to work best in people who have triglyceride levels over 500 mg/dL (5.7 mmol/L). Fibrates may increase the risk of side effects when taken together with statins. Niacin. Niacin, sometimes called nicotinic acid, can lower your triglycerides and your "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol). It's typically reserved for people who have triglyceride levels over 500 mg/ dL (5.7 mmol/L). Don't take over-the-counter niacin without talking to your doctor first. Niacin can interact with other medications and can cause significant side effects. If your doctor prescribes medication to lower your triglycerides, take the medication as prescribed. And remember the significance of the healthy lifestyle changes you've made. Medications can help — but lifestyle matters, too.

BLUE Zones and the way we eat Hello Houston! It is my privilege to write for LUXCIOR from Loma Linda, California - the only "Blue Zone" in the United States. You may want to ask me: "What is a Blue Zone?" A Blue Zone is where you find groups of people who live much longer than average, many of them over 100 years. There are five Blue Zones in the world: Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Sardinia, Italy; Icaria, Greece; and Okinawa, Japan. People in these communities are living in good health well into their 90s and 100s! Amazing! Back in 2005 CNN and many other networks reported on a study National Geographic conducted on what they called "Centennials", identifying three of the currently five Blue Zones: Loma Linda and Seventh-day Adventists, Sardinia, and Okinawa.The other two have been added since then.

Now, how can one live healthy into their 80s, 90s, or even 100s? If you are interested in learning a bit more, keep on reading because today I am sharing some health and nutrition tips that can improve your health and, quite possibly, add more years to your life. As we are discussing nutrition, it’s important to first know what the food groups are: The food groups include:
1. Vegetables
2. Fruits
3. Grains
4. Dairy products
5. Protein foods
6. Oils
If you’re reading this on your lunch break, take a moment to really look at your plate of food -- or if you’re at home, think of what you usually serve yourself at dinnertime with your family. What does your plate look like? What food group takes up the largest portion?
3. For your protein, if you eat meat, choose lean meats. Other sources of protein can be fish, eggs, and cheese. Plant foods are also a good source of protein -- legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas), nuts, soy (for example tofu), and seeds
In a typical North American diet, it is common for half of the plate to be protein, and the other to be grains (starches). Though this may be a typical American diet, it certainly does not mean that it is a healthy one. In fact, the MyPlate recommendations are that half of your plate be vegetables, greens, and some fruit (more vegetables than fruit) and the rest of the plate for protein and starches. That is, one quarter of the plate for protein foods, and the other quarter for grains / starches.
4. When preparing foods, use cooking methods that utilize little to no added fats such as baking, broiling, steaming, etc. If cooking with fats, use vegetable oils such as olive oil or safflower oil
Now that we know our food groups and how they should look on our plate, let's talk a little about the types of food and their preparation: 1. Vegetables, greens, and fruits carry many nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Whenever possible, buy your produce fresh; frozen is also a good option. If you’re unable to buy fresh or frozen, look for canned vegetables or fruit that say as “Low Sodium”, “No Salt Added”, or “No Added Sugar” 2. Buy unprocessed grains. The less processed the grain, the more nutrients and fiber they contain. Look for brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole grain products
5. Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) are recommended as a source of Calcium and Vitamin D, however, they are not a necessary part of your diet. If you do consume dairy products, choose low fat or fat free options. Calcium can also be found in a variety of plant foods and many other foods are fortified with Vitamin D My dear Houstonians, I hope this information inspires you to make healthy changes to your diet. You might have a combination of goals: your weight-loss goal, your health goals, your exercise goals or your daily servings and calorie goals. Goal setting keeps you motivated and helps you stick with your program, so it's important to approach it with a thoughtful plan. The key is to make your goals your own. The more aligned they are with your likes and dislikes — your preferences and priorities — the greater your chances of success. So while yes, the sky is the limit, it's important to set goals that you can reach and that suit your lifestyle. You can always reassess goals and set more challenging ones as you go along.

MOVE AHEAD WITH PROCESS GOALS Process goals focus on a specific process or action — such as "I will walk 30 minutes every day" or "I will eat four servings of vegetables each day" — rather than a single outcome. Process goals: • Build success one small step at a time • Help you reach your outcome goals • Are the most important type of goal for many people
STAY INSPIRED WITH DAILY GOALS Each day, it's important to set goals for both meal servings and physical activity. It's also important to set one inspirational goal, such as, "Today I will stop eating before I feel full" or "Today I will focus on positive thinking." Daily goals: • Are the building blocks for weight loss and good health • Provide a daily sense of achievement • Keep you motivated to keep up with your program
INCLUDE ENJOYMENT IN YOUR GOALS When setting goals, don't forget satisfaction. A study of individuals who maintained their weight after completing a weight-loss program found that satisfaction with the amount and quality of daily activities was an important factor in success.
