t is with profound gratitude that I come to the end of this year. Gratitude, in the first place, to God for his goodness towards all of us that are still here and can count his many blessings. Many don't enjoy the same privilege.

I am grateful to our wonderful community of Houston, and to our audience that appreciates our principles and enjoys our content. I imagine by now you may have noticed that we have never advertised any alcohol, tobacco products, adult entertainment, and other businesses from a small group of industries. I have nothing against any of these types of businesses, but on the other hand, I do have the moral responsibility to ensure that if you take my magazine home, you won't need to worry about your children (mine are 17 and 13, boy and girl) seeing anything inappropriate for their age. I have given up a lot of money over the years for turning down those businesses, but principles should always come before profit. I thank you, and my clients, for respecting and approving my philosophy in respect to this. In a very special way, I am most grateful to our partners that have supported us even through the hardships of Covid, some of them (like Lamborghini Houston, ACPS Plastic Surgery and Vander Dys Fine Jewelers) since our humble beginnings 9 years ago. Thanks to these and all the fantastic businesses we represent, LUXCIOR continues to grow and evolve. Always being very selective and making sure that the businesses we chose to represent are the best among the top in their respective industries, I'd strongly encourage you to use their services and purchase their products. Rest assured, they will always go beyond your highest expectations. In closing, I wish you and your loved ones a blessed and wonderful holiday season, and a very Happy and Joyful New Year! Merry Christmas!

2022 LIFESTYLE

WITH PURPOSE

[

After two years of Covid and the setback it imposed on our lifestyle, 2022 is the time to make up for all the opportunities we missed. New Year's Resolutions -or "Goals" as I prefer to call them- are a great thing. At least they are the first step to achievement. But they are worth it only if you turn them into action. So your very first resolution for 2022, should be to completely kill procrastination, "the dream killer". Here are some key suggestions and ideas you may want to consider:

1. LIVE A LIFE WITH PURPOSE

DO THE BEST POSSIBLE USE OF YOUR TOP TWO COMMODITIES

Pay attention to this, and do it carefully. We all came to this world under very different circumstances, born and raised in different places, even countries, and cultures, with such incredible differences, different health, and mindset conditions, different religions and values, different financial situations, different educations, different cultures, different approaches to life, different everything. We all were born and raised with huge advantages over others, in an infinite number of areas. However, there are two single commodities we all as humans have in common: Time and potential. No matter who we are or where we come from, no matter how intelligent, wealthy, healthy, educated, beautiful, skilled, and successful we are -or not-, we all have the same amount of time and potential to become what we could be. We all have 24 hours in a day to do whatever we want with them. No one has one single second more than the other to claim an advantage. In addition to that, we all have the same potential to accomplish literally anything. Especially when living in one of the best cities in the number one country in the world for opportunities. But

36

Martin Gondra, publisher even if you lived in the worst neighborhood of the poorest country in the world, under the most adverse circumstances, you have the potential to get out of there and do something about it, as it has been proven by the millions that have done exactly that. But since I'm talking to my audience in Houston, I'll be very specific to you as a Houstonian. Are you aware that at least 17 Houstonians made it to Forbes' list of the wealthiest billionaires in the world, despite a 2021 packed with obstacles? Interestingly enough, we all drive through the same streets, eat at the same restaurants, buy groceries at the same stores, have to deal with the same family issues, we all send our kids to school every morning, buy the same medicines at CVS or Walgreens to deal with the same allergies, we all wear very much the same clothes (nobody knows if you bought the outfit you have on right now at Sacks 5h Ave., Nordstrom Rack or Ross, and it really makes no difference). If you look at the time right now on your Santos de Cartier or your $20 watch, we are all looking at the exact same time, and this day will end with the exact same amount of minutes for all of us. The key question is: how do Richard Kinder, Dannine Avara, Robert Brockman, or Tilman Fertitta -I just randomly picked 4 of the 17- manage their time? We all started out this day at about the same time this morning. I have no doubt we would gather great lessons from our findings in regards to their time management.

Having said that, I must add that we all have the exact same potential to do equally great things as they have done, and accomplish very much anything. Most likely in different fields, and at different timetables, just like "the 17", but both you and I are equally equipped to take the necessary steps to live an amazing life, a life with a great purpose, and accomplish extraordinary things, even much greater than the ones they accomplished. And by the way, who determined that success is measured by net worth? Sure, finances definitely do play an important part in your success story, but self-fulfillment, happiness, health, family, contribution to others in our community and outside of our inner circle, to name a few, are just as important. The key point to bear in mind: Money without a selfless purpose is your worst course, not a blessing. Almost 27 years ago I chose to make communications - publishing LUXCIOR is just my most visible, tangible tool- in order to fulfill my purpose in life, as it allows me to communicate, to educate, to empower those less privileged, as I reach a segment of mid to high-income individuals, and ironically as it may seem, I have seen enough to learn that many wealthy people can be incredibly unprivileged in many other areas of their lives. My humble, yet in many cases meaningful contribution, is my highest purpose in life. Your purpose in life can be growing Forbes Houston's list to "the 18", or as a health practitioner relieving the pain of those suffering of health conditions, or releasing the greatest product or service company no one thought of yet, or becoming the greatest commercial or residential architectural firm, or the next top real estate developer, or the greatest mother, or the best teacher laying the foundation for small children to become incredible success stories, or our next president. Wherever you are in life today, as we start 2022, and whatever your life purpose is, this year empowers your destiny maximizing and optimizing every minute of each day, and pushing your strengths to their full potential. Don't settle for anything less than that.

2- KILL THE DREAMS KILLER Make it a rock-solid determination that whatever your goals are, you will NOT allow procrastination to get on your way. You are in control, and you will make sure things get done, completely done, and in your timetable. Leaving things for later is no longer an option. The road of "tomorrow" is the fastest way to the land of "nowhere and failure". That stops now, and forever. From now on you are an "Action" individual.

LUXCIOR.com

37

LIFESTYLE 4- DON’T SET YOURSELF UP FOR DISAPPOINTMENT Set your sights high, but within reason. 2020 and 2021 were both years of outright heartache for a lot of people and for some the pandemic aftershocks are still shaking the ground around them. Aside from being realistic in your goals, you should also be prepared for your initial plans to take detours at times. The past two years helped us understand that many things are not entirely under our control. You may need to be quick on your feet to remedy the unpredictables and salvage your resolutions. Give your New Year’s goals something to really hold on to in case something happens. Obviously, you can’t come up with a thousand contingencies; just remember that when you’re making plans we don’t have the luxury of taking things for granted. If a challenge comes up, you’ll deal with it more easily if you accept that nothing can be 100% set in stone.

5. SCHEDULE YOUR HOUR OF POWER Have time for yourself, before you deal with anything or anyone else. And this includes anyone else texting you, emails, social media, and so forth. Your morning Hour of Power is what will set the tone and ultimately the outcome for your day. This is the time when you sit in a quiet place in your home, away from distractions of any kind. If your significant other or children will be around, get up an hour earlier, and secure your sacred time. Let everyone at home know that this is your time, and it needs to be respected. What do you do and what is it to be gained with this incredible ritual? Well, it will depend on your preferences. In my case, I use this time to read (actually study) my Bible and talk to God. I make it a point not to talk to anyone before I talk to God. For me, he must be #1, and I seek knowledge, wisdom, and guidance while reading the Bible. And I seal this hour with a conversation with him where I thank him for all his goodness, for my family, my children, my health, my mind, my creativity, my work, among many other things. This alone makes me not only be grateful but also appreciate how much I've been blessed and how wealthy I am. Counting your blessings, and being thankful is crucial to make you see that you are well-positioned for even greater levels of success in all areas of your life. Even if you don't believe there is a God watching over you, you should reflect, read, learn and grow in some way during this powerful time. Reflect over your challenges, your failures, but always keep in mind that no matter how great yesterday's failure was, today is a new day, and you have a brand new opportunity to do great things. Your past successes should come to mind Focus on how great you did in the past, and get ready to do it again. This is the time to also plan your day. At the end of this hour, you have a roadmap for this day, and that roadmap should always guide you towards accomplishing your mid and long-term goals. You shouldn't do anything that is not 100% supportive of your goals.

38

6. PRORITIZE YOUR HEALTH We all are different, different ages, gender, health conditions, goals, etc. But we all come to an agreement: our health plays the most basic role in our quality of life. Taking control of your health may require covering several areas, like the way you eat, the way you exercise, and the way you rest -to name a few-. What you eat plays a critical role in your health, weight, your mind, your self-esteem, your performance, your happiness, and much more. You are what you eat, literally. So it's entirely up to you to decide how you will handle your eating habits. At this point, I think it's unnecessary to tell you that refined sugars are bad for you and will make you gain weight, or that eating heavily right before you go to bed at night is unhealthy, or that eating vegetables and fruits should always be an important part of your diet. You know all these things. Now the question is, what are you going to do with this knowledge? We both know the answer if you want to be your best you. Exercising is another key component you should bring into your weekly routine. Three days a week at a minimum will pay you great rewards. Do intervals between cardio and workout. Don't do both on the same day. Your body needs time to recuperate and give you back the results you want. Sleep well. People are killing themselves and their brain functions by stealing from the number of hours of rest they need. The number of hours you naturally sleep when you don't wake up with your alarm, that is the amount of rest your body and mind need. Make adjustments to support that need, and go to bed at a time that will allow you to accomplish that. Drink lots of water, and natural juice direct from fruits. Nothing can compare to water. Our brain feeds from it, and so does our body. Make the firmest decision to stop drinking sodas and artificially flavored drinks. There are nothing, "0" nutrients there for you, and a big deal of harmful sweeteners and chemicals.

7. DEVELOP THE HABIT OF TURNING "DEAD TIME" INTO A PRODUCTIVE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY Learning new things every day makes you smarter, and more successful. You can convert your "dead-time" while you drive into a great learning opportunity by listening to whatever will give you the opportunity to grow in any given area. I used to listen to music or the news, and I still do on short drives, but when I know I'll be sitting in the car for at least 30 minutes, I use that time to learn and grow. Even if you think you don't have anything in mind to learn at this time, at the very minimum listen to speakers that can teach you how to develop yourself. Examples are Tony Robbins, Eric Thomas, Jay Abraham, Brian Tracy, Jim Rohn, to name a few of several speakers that will empower you with real-life advice. I hope this will help you get on track to a great 2022, and enjoy noticing the progress in your lifestyle and accomplishments. The rewards will be worth any effort you put into it.

LET'S MAKE IT EASY These gift ideas may look too obvious to recommend. Doesn't that give you a clue as to why they are? Why go crazy trying to reinvent the wheel, when we all know exactly what women want.

You can never gio wrong with a fabulous purse, especially if it brands with the LV.

In a lady's closet, nothing will ever be as important as her shoes. So here is another great option to make her smile. Just make sure you get her right size, and just as important, the luxury brand she expects, like these Dolce & Gabbana for just $1,995.

You can never go wrong with a fine perfume. According to Elle, Black Opium is one of the top three for 2022.

A beautiful piece of jewelry will make her shine thess holidays. Here is a fabulous pendant from the Roberto Coin collections. One of many gorgeous pieces and designers at VanderDys Fine Jewelers.

Jewelry is queen. However, she will also treasure a new and beautiful chest where to keep it. This is another great idea to brighten her holidays.

Precious and semi-precious stones abound at Daniel @ Co. to make a luxurious Christmas gift.

The beautiful jewelry you will find at Lesley Ann Jewels makes another fabulous alternative in your list of gifts she's bound to love.

Handsome Gift Ideas

FOR HIM

When it comes to gifts, men are a lot easier to please than women, although they might be just as expensive. If you think about the absolute ultimate gift for a man, that is a car. But certainly not any car. If you are planning on going this far, you might as well go all the way. A Lamborghini or a McLaren will surrender him to your feet for at least a couple years, and you could skip Father's Day and his upcoming birthday just fine. Next option would be a fine watch, and nothing under $10K. Men absolutely are into time pieces just as women are into shoes. They will never have enough of those.

How about a Montegrappa pen

STYLE Another gift men really love are colognes. Like watches, he will welcome as many as he could possibly have. I mean, a man can have so many colognes that some of them could last a lifetime and even be stored with aged wines and be sold as an investment. And this is no joke. Some men own incredible fragrances that have been off the market for years, even decades. And of course, because they can't get them anymore, they rarely wear them, so eventually, they will end up being inherited by their children after they pass. Clive Christian is one any man -and woman- would love. Find it at Saks 5th Ave.

A Louie Vuitton wallet of a small pocket organizer like this one will make a handsome and very useful present that for sure will make him smile.

A giant gForce, totally customizable to just about any size and shape, bending, indoor and outdoor screen for his mancave and pleasure will be a totally out-of-the-ordinary gift. It all depends on how much you are willing to give him up to a screen because this is going to hook him -and probably everyone at home- up. This is beyond any screen you have seen before. fter nearly two years on lockdown, Houston’s ultimate show of private exotic automobiles came back “with vengeance”, with a double event.

With great events like the Lamborghini Festival, the premiere of the new McLaren Fest, the Ferrari Festival, and the brand new upcoming Porsche Fest in early 2022, Houston was still missing the vibrant opportunity to enjoy ALL the supercar and ultra-luxury brands in one fabulous show. Since we launched in 2014, the concept was a hit and has been noticeably growing. In 2018 we went to NRG, with a fantastic show, but fire marshal regulations put too many restrictions and the inability to start the cars. Although that event was visually amazing, these restrictions killed half the fun. In 2019 we went for open-air, but this time on a race track, at MSR Houston, offering the unique opportunity to see the cars in action. It was a great event, but not everyone still understood the safety and fun of putting their supercar on a track. After proving the efficiency of our safety measures with literally "0" incidents and tons of adrenaline, the word passed around, and the interest grew substantially. This year, even with the forecast anticipating showers (which actually didn't get to Angleton till 4:30 pm when the event

was very much over), we had a good number of exotics on the track having the time of their lives. Additionally, two weeks prior, we produced a show at Highland Village where 55 spectacular cars of all exotic and ultra-luxury brands gathered for this anticipated event. Presented by Lamborghini Houston and produced by LUXCIOR Magazine, both events were bound to be a major success. With great food offered by Gauchos Do Sul and RA Sushi, Sweet Paris Créperie, and spirits by Clutch Distilling, plus live music, everyone had a great time. Vehicle owners at both events had the opportunity to have their toys being awarded beautiful trophies under four categories, plus a Best of Show, Second Best, and Best of Show People's Choice Award. Rumors indicate that the plan for the 7th 2022 Edition of The Houston Exotic Auto Festival will produce a much larger double-event presented by Lamborghini Houston: Auto Show in Uptown/River Oaks, and Auto Show plus TrackTime Festival at MSR Houston. Stay tuned for details at HoustonExoticAutoFestival.com. In the following pages, you can enjoy some highlights from both events. LUXCIOR.com

THE SHOW at Highland Village

66

Highland Village has just had its best event of 2021 in many years, according to several accounts. Lamborghini, McLaren, Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, to name a few, were present in River Oaks offering a fabulous rainbow of brands, models and colors for people to enjoy. This show also offered car owners the opportunity to evaluate other brands and models.

Friends and exotic automobile lovers across multiple makes had the chance to show off their masterpieces and enjoy each other over great food provided by Gauchos do Sul Brazilian Steakhouse, RA Sushi and Sweet Paris Créperie, and spirits by Clutch Distilling, while listening to great live music under a perfect Texas sunny sky.

LAMBORGHINI HOUSTON Authorized Dealer A super sports car soul and the functionality typical for an SUV: this is Lamborghini Urus, the world’s first Super Sports Utility Vehicle. Identifiable as an authentic Lamborghini with its unmistakable DNA, Urus is at the same time a groundbreaking card: the extreme dimensions, the pure Lamborghini design and the outstanding performance make it absolutely unique. Urus’ distinctive silhouette with a dynamic flying coupe line shows its super sports origins, while its outstanding proportions convey strength, solidity and safety. Urus’ success factors are definitely the design, the driving dynamics and the performance. All these features allowed Lamborghini to launch a Super Sport Utility Vehicle remaining loyal to its DNA.

tarting in the early 1900's, supercars were originally meant for racing. Lamborghini, McLaren, Ferrari, Bugatti, Maserati, Aston Martin, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, and Lotus -to name a few-, were all initially conceived as race cars. Of course, over time and to this day, they also became street-legal cars for the rich, as a way to celebrate success and love for speed and extravagance. However, having a car that has all the features for the highest speed and racing, parked in your batmobile mancave, or just to show it off over a cup of coffee, I find it to be an absolute waste. Of course, I understand many of these cars, ranging on average between $300K and $3 Million, are not to be burned down on a track on a regular basis. These are toys to treasure, exhibit, and in many cases even use as a form of investment. But on the other hand, having a hypercar, a supercar, or a sports car that can easily

74

reach high speeds and give you the rush of your life, just to see it perform on the beltway 8 at 75/mph to show the Toyota next to you that you are superior (I see this scene almost on a daily basis), is almost surreal. This is the reason we created the experience at MSR. We understand this is no COTA, but nothing beats the experience of knowing you are with your friends in the safe environment of an actual race track next to cars of several select brands, that are the right match for your car. Let's be clear, at the H.E.A.F. we don't race against one another. We go for a fun, incredible rush, charged with energy and excitement, and the opportunity to evaluate new models of all brands. And this time around, we got it more than ever before, paving the road for a 2022 event that will beat the highest expectations. Houston fasten your seat belts!

STYLE AUTO

Jumping from a Rolls-Royce into a BMW 7 series comes as a seamless experience. After all, BMW owns Rolls-Royce, so aside from the iconic umbrella inside the door, the night sky illuminating the roof, or the ultra-luxury finishes of the finest car in the world, if you close your eyes, you almost couldn't tell the difference between the two brands. Of course, nothing comes near the elevated experience of driving a Rolls-Royce, but for a luxury everyday drive, nothing comes close to a BMW 7 Series. That's why I have made BMW my personal choice since the 733 in the mid-'80s. The BMW 7 Series has been the flagship sedan of the brand for decades, and is one of LUXCIOR's top-ranked luxury sedans. It is loaded with all the latest technology BMW has to offer and is impressively spacious and comfortable. The 7 Series competes with the Audi A8, Genesis G90, Mercedes-Benz S Class, and Porsche Panamera. All of these vehicles represent the pinnacle of their respective brand's luxury and technology. Overall, we're impressed with the 7 Series' powerful engines, technology, and roomy cabin. There's an astonishing amount of power and acceleration here. Right when you think you're really hauling, the 7 series has another gear that vaults it into triple digits with ease. This car is built for the autobahn after all. It's a shame it'll only ever use a fraction of its power on Houston highways. The big sedan brakes with similar power and consistency, arrow-straight, and free of drama during panic-stop tests. Gear changes are seamless, and the steering is nicely weighted at highway speeds and properly assisted in parking lots. Handling is a mixed bag. It's laser-quick to turn into a corner, but loads of body roll amazingly never seem to affect the car's stability.

The adaptive suspension possesses a nearly impeccable ability to absorb and separate the regular road rash of daily life from the passengers. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, with loads of adjustability and quick heating and cooling, although our rear passengers weren't as impressed with the massage function. This experience is world-class luxury cruising all day. This new 7 Series received subtle upgrades from the former model, but its tech and driver assistance features represent its largest leap. The latest voice assistant, summoned by a "Hey, BMW" wake-up phrase, can set navigation points and control cabin temps in a conversational style. And the new gauge cluster boasts sharp graphics and customizable data screens, such as an inset navigation display, freeing up the center console display for other duties. The optional Bowers & Wilkins system is exceptional and probably the most affordable way to own a Bowers & Wilkins system. The semi-automated driving features are a boon for commuters, although the lane-keeping assist makes pretty aggressive steering corrections even when you are paying attention. The 2022 7 Series is available in a variety of trims and configurations. While the base 740i and its turbocharged inlinesix offer solid performance and plenty of features, we think it's worth stepping up to the V8-powered 750i xDrive for the additional performance, useful head-up display, and standard all-wheel drive. The BMW 7 Series is available in five trim levels: 740i, 740i xDrive, 750i xDrive, 745e xDrive and M760i xDrive. The major difference between the trims comes down to the engine and the presence or not of all-wheel drive (called xDrive), though some features and options further separate the trims.

It's a big car with a big cabin that's nearly impervious to any sound or feeling that would indicate there's a world outside the windows. W HERE FL A SHIN G

86

Standard feature highlights for the 7 Series include: Adaptive air suspension, LED headlights, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch infotainment screen with navigation, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration (late availability for Android Auto), Heated front seats, armrests and steering wheel, 16-way power-adjustable front seats, Keyless entry and ignition, Four-zone automatic climate control, Power-sliding panoramic g l a s s r o o f,

STYLE

Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking), Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the 7 Series and its surroundings for tight parking situations), Blind-spot monitoring (alerts you if a vehicle in the next lane over is in your blind spot), Lane departure warning (warns you of a lane departure when a turn signal isn't used and can automatically steer to maintain lane position). I found this feature to be a little annoying as you have to stay focused in the center of your lane at all times, Forward collision mitigation (applies the brakes automatically to stop the vehicle to avoid or minimize a collision). The 7 Series is an amazing vehicle combining the driving experience of a luxury sedan for a night in the town, with the performance of a fast and aggressive sports car. I bought my last 7 Series with Jasmyn Guerrero at Advantage BMW Midtown, for a very pleasant experience. Lourdes at their service department has provided me an experience just as VIP as you would expect from BMW. They got my 5-star review.

2022 INTERIOR DESIGN. DEFINED. 2022 FOUNDATIONS

As we come to the end of 2021 and dive into a new year, we will dedicate these pages to provide you with valuable information on the 2022 trends; we will review the roadmap to a meaningful Interior Design, hoping to deliver the guidelines which will allow us to lay solid foundations for our projects this new year. After this historic event that has marked our last 2 years of our lives and has sharply changed us, it is easy to deduce the keywords that today are inspiration not only for events as important as Milan Design week, but also for projects and architectural design throughout the world and that despite cultural influences have a similarity in the soul of each one of them: Sustainability, harmony, light and renovation are the foundations that in 2022redefine our need to live in a warm, safe and impactful place.

MODERN AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Sustainability and harmony, two concepts that go hand in hand and that seek coexistence with nature in absolute harmony. Integrate trees, landscapes, and their sensations, as well as textures and colors, are a fundamental part of our design. But in addition to the above, sustainability also tells us about making the most successful decisions in materials and concepts that will allow us to make long-term investments, with the minimum risk of error and with the maximum satisfaction in each of our projects. It is important to look for alternatives in long-lasting and easy-maintenance finishes such as stones, wood and high-tech textiles.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

ARTISANAL VALUE

A trend that without many pretensions has been stealing spaces and promises to become a protagonist in 2022 is CRAFTSMANSHIP. The incalculable value that we are giving to the manual processes, the colors and the talent of our artisans has allowed millennial production and design processes to be rescued and reinvented with the needs of a market that requires luxury products, of exclusive design and absolute dedication; products that bring freshness and allow the reinvention of the artisan world; a challenge that will undoubtedly

96

be talked about this year in the world of design and decoration. The starting point of any residential or business project is the definition of the style that should prevail; However, for 2022 we are preparing for “Everything is possible”; of course, well conceptualized. For art lovers, it will be a pleasure to concentrate all their treasures in one space; those that give character to each design, in a well-harmonized space and without the fear of falling into the “museum effect”.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Undoubtedly, going from an ornate but beautiful art space to an illuminated and minimalist one will be the meeting point between different generations and without a doubt a balm for our senses.

By the close of this last edition of 2021, the Pantone for 2022 has not been announced, which is generally known the first week of December. However, their announcement so far points to “colors that celebrate our desire to break the boundaries satisfy our fervent need for

the playful creativity and unconstrained visual expression we are seeking as we enter into this time.” -Pantone.

COLORS

However, we can bet on the prevalence of green tones that are renewal and reconnection with nature; pink to coral that communicate empathy and optimism. And of course, let's never forget the importance of earth tones and neutrals to set our spaces and the accents of brightness and elegance will also be decisive.

SETTING OUR CHILDREN FOR DEFEAT By Alfredo Peñalosa We used to lose our children on the streets, to drugs, to gangs, to crime, to a bad friend, in an accident. Today we lose them inside their bedroom, right at home!

Inside their rooms, we lose our children to drugs, conversations with bad relationships, pornography, immersed in a fantasy world of self-destruction.

When they played on the front yard, we heard their voices, we listened to their fantasies, and when we heard them, even from the distance, we knew what was going on in their minds. When they came home there was no TV in every room, no PC in their bedroom, no smartphones in their hands. Today we do not hear their voices, we don't know what they are thinking.

Dead to their family identity, they become a mixture of everything by which they are been influenced and parents don’t know who their children are anymore.

Our children are there, inside their bedroom, and we make the fatal mistake of thinking they are safe there. How naive we are! Now they stay with their headphones, locked in their world, feeding their minds without us knowing with what. Literally losing their lives, still alive in their bodies, but dead in their relationships with their parents, locked in a world of technology that contributes nothing to the formation of safe and strong children and teenagers capable of making morally correct decisions, in accordance with their family values.

106

I invite you to take your child out of the room, from the tablet, from the cell phone, from the TV, from the earphone, I invite you to take your children out to eat, to the park or to buy board games, to the living room, by your side for at least two established days (beyond Saturday and Sunday). And play, have fun with them, listen to their voices, their words. Re-learn who they are. They are speaking to us, perhaps even screaming for help from their closed world, in their silence. The question is, what is the most important thing in your life? Your answer should hopefully help you realize what changes you need to make with respect to your children.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

ALLERGIES

and your Immunology System Keity Hodgson Ayerdis, MPH, RD Hello Houston and Happy Winter! We are fully in what most medical professionals call “respiratory season”. From Fall in October to Spring in February and March, we must all take extra care of our health and bodies to avoid becoming sick with the flu or any other respiratory viruses. Among personal protection precautions you can take, the types of food you are eating can either strengthen or weaken your immune system.

2. Salt. A high salt diet is known to affect your blood pressure and fluid retention, and it can also reduce your body’s ability to fight infection. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting Sodium intake to 2300 mg/day. 3. Sugar. Too much sugar in your diet can also weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to bacteria. Limit eating foods that have added sugar.

Let’s talk about these foods today, and hopefully you’ll be able to strengthen your body’s immune system by increasing your immune boosting foods this season, and decreasing your intake of foods that may weaken your immune system.

4. Too little fiber. If you’re not eating enough fiber, you’re not providing your gut with the preand probiotics it needs to help boost your immune health. Recommendations are for 25 g fiber per day for women, and 38 g fiber per day for men.

First let’s talk about foods or eating habits that may weaken your immune response. As we are going into the holiday season, many foods and traditions your family celebrates with may not be aiding your body in the best way. If you can keep one rule going into the holiday food festivities, make moderation your motto.

5. Too little green. By “green”, I mean green vegetables. Green vegetables provide many necessary nutrients and compounds that can help our immune system function at its best.

1. Alcohol. Drinking alcohol weakens your immune system because it disrupts the way your immune cells normally work to protect you. This disruption can make you more at risk for respiratory viruses, pneumonia and may increase your risk for many other diseases.

108

Now let’s talk about what we can do to help our immune system be in its best form! Certain nutrients are known as “immune boosting” nutrients. You can surely get yourself an immune boosting multivitamin, but it’s best to consume the foods that contain these nutrients to obtain the full benefits of these foods.

1. Vitamin C. The mighty Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that is well known to help us fight infections by boosting our immune system. Foods high in Vitamin C include all our citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, etc), kiwis (one serving has more Vitamin C than an orange), guavas, and also vegetables such as broccoli, bell peppers, and spinach. 2. Beta-Carotene. This nutrient turns into Vitamin A, another antioxidant that helps our cells fight viruses. An easy way to identify foods with Beta-carotene is by looking at their color. Fruits and vegetables that are yellow-range will have a lot of this nutrient in them. Examples include carrots, butternut squash, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, etc. 3. Vitamin E. Another important vitamin for our immune system. You can find Vitamin E in foods such as avocados, green leafy vegetables, as well as nuts and seeds. 4. Vitamin D. Also known as the sunshine vitamin, you can get your Vitamin D by exposing your skin to the sun for at least 15 minutes/day, or eating high Vitamin D foods such as fatty fish. It is also found in dairy products and it is added to many foods such as cereals, orange juice, and soy milk. If your skin is darker, the extra pigment impairs your skin’s ability to synthesize Vitamin D. You may need to ask your doctor to check your levels to make sure you are not deficient in Vitamin D. 5. Zinc. This mineral is essential for your immune system. The body does not make it nor can it be stored in your body. Foods that contain Zinc are beans and nuts (such as cashews), whole grains, poultry, and some seafoods. It’s also added to (fortified in) breakfast cereals and dairy products. 6. Garlic. There are special nutrients in garlic that help stimulate our immune cells to fight off infections. Garlic is also known to help reduce inflammation in the body. Another benefit to garlic is that it helps the body absorb Zinc, another of our immune boosting stars. 7. Water. The simplest of hydrators is also important for a healthy immune system. Good hydration is important because it helps your body carry all these nutrients where they are most needed.

There you have it! There is much more that can be added to this list, but I will keep it shorter for today. I hope you enjoy the holiday season and are able to stay healthy through this autumn and winter by decreasing the intake of foods that can weaken your immune system, and by increasing your immune boosting foods. God bless and have a safe and joyful holiday season!

Health Benefits

of Cardio Exercise

By Mayo Clinic

Practice these fitness fundamentals to help lower your health risks and improve your quality of life.

In a nutshell, the term aerobic means "with oxygen." Aerobic exercise and activities are also called cardio, short for "cardiovascular." During aerobic activity, you repeatedly move large muscles in your arms, legs and hips. Your heart rate increases and you breathe faster and more deeply. This maximizes the amount of oxygen in your blood and ultimately helps you use oxygen more efficiently.

Cardio exercise and activities can also:

How well you use oxygen is called your aerobic capacity. When your aerobic capacity is high, your heart, lungs and blood vessels efficiently deliver large amounts of oxygen throughout your body. As a result, you feel more energized and don't tire as quickly. If you are a beginner to exercise, start with low to moderately intense cardio activities, so you can do them for long periods of time and gain many health benefits. Common examples include walking, bicycling, swimming, dancing and water aerobics, but don’t limit yourself: You can choose any activities you enjoy, such as canoeing, in-line skating, golfing or martial arts.

No matter what your age, aerobic exercise will help you in your daily activities and increase your stamina and endurance.

Benefits

Start slowly

If you haven’t gotten enough aerobic exercise, you may use your entire aerobic capacity while walking up a flight of stairs. You'll realize this when you get to the top and feel out of breath. But if you're fit, you'll have no problem because your aerobic capacity is greater. That’s just one example of how you can benefit from cardio exercise.

If you're a beginner, start slowly. You might walk five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the evening. Gradually add a few minutes to each session and then pick up the pace a bit. Soon you could be walking briskly for 30 minutes a day. Also consider hiking, cycling, jogging, rowing, elliptical training — any activity that increases your breathing and heart rate.

110

Take a three-pronged approach Include three elements in your workout: Warm-up. Before each session, warm up for five to 10 minutes to gradually rev up your cardiovascular system and increase blood flow to your muscles. Try a low-intensity version of your planned activity. For example, if you plan to take a brisk walk, warm up by walking slowly. Conditioning. At your own pace, work up to at least 30 minutes of cardio a day to develop your aerobic capacity by increasing your heart rate, depth of breathing and muscle endurance. Cool-down. After each session, cool down for five to 10 minutes. Stretch your calf muscles, quadriceps (upper thighs), hamstrings, lower back and chest. This afterworkout stretch allows your heart rate and muscles to return to normal. Moderate activity should cause you to breathe faster and feel like you're working. But if you experience unusual pain or alarming symptoms during exercise, stop immediately and seek medical attention.

CITY OF FOUR EMPIRES Rome and Istanbul are both over twoand-a-half millennia old, but for the majority of the time Istanbul was larger, more influential, and wealthier than Rome. Istanbul has been the capital of four empires: the Roman Empire (330395), the Byzantine Empire (395-1204), the Latin Empire (1204-1261), the Byzantine Empire (1261 -1453) and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). Istanbul’s history is very rich, and remains of each of these empires can still be seen. Istanbul is modern and ancient, conservative and free-wheeling. It has a vibrant nightlife and prominent mosques, cuttingedge art and traditional family-owned restaurants. The old and the new layer constantly in this city that never stops moving. The contrasts are phenomenal. The Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Galata Tower are just some of the many historic structures scattered throughout the city. As the cliché goes, Istanbul is where east meets west, or vice versa. This unique location combined with its history and occupants of different cultural background make this city a true melting pot. In Istanbul century old buildings stand near modern skyscrapers. In the same area mosques, churches and synagogues call for devote inhabitants. Liberal and conservative Muslims peacefully live side by side, together with people from a dozen other religions or beliefs. However, they all have one thing in common: the world famous Turkish hospitality you must experience. There are plenty of off-beat sites for those who really want to soak up the native culture and leave the tourist crowds behind.

116

Explore the Eyup mosque complex at the top of the Golden Horn, a walk through its ancient cemetery hugging the hillside rewarding you with wonderful views of the city. A short trip across the Bosphorus on one of the city’s characterful ferries will land you at Uskudar, a bustling town with lots of important Ottoman architecture and some great food shopping. If you want to go further afield the Bosphorus ‘villages’ have much to offer: wooden Ottoman houses and the village ambience of Arnavutkoy, the fortress of Rumeli Hisar with its unforgettable views of the water and fresh seafood and walks at Anadolu Kavagi at the mouth of the Black Sea. A city of youthful energy Istanbul has been making its name on the contemporary arts and culture scene in recent years with such venues as the Istanbul Modern museum and entertainment venue and Babylon with its live gigs. Beyoglu the old European quarter of the city is Istanbul’s bohemian quarter, full of cafes, street performers and trendy young people.

Hot air ballooning attraction in Cappadoccia

Turkish food is one of the great cuisines of the world and to be found in abundance throughout Istanbul, with a great variety of restaurants and eateries for all pockets and delicious fresh street food it is impossible to go hungry. For those who prefer to cook their own, fish markets offer the day’s fresh catches and a variety of flavourings are on offer at the Egyptian Spice Bazaar. All across the city you can rub shoulders with the locals as they visit their weekly markets and local shops for Turkish specialities.

WHEN TO GO The best time to visit is during spring or the fall (April through May and September). The summers are hot and sticky and the winters are gray and drizzly, but the spring bursts with tulips and blooming pink Judas trees, while the autumn weather is perfectly warm and breezy. Those seasons are likely to be less crowded than the busy summer.

Grand Bazaar Beyazit Gate

A CITY WITH VIBRANT NIGHTLIFE

SERIOUS SHOPPING

Thanks to Istanbul’s unique geographical location many the top nightlife venues are located by the Bosphorus or on a rooftop offering a view of the magnificent skyline. The nightlife is vibrant, with an abundance of choice to satisfy everybody’s taste.

Shops galore in Istanbul. You can go luxurious and mainstream by a visit to one of the many modern shopping centers spread all over the city. Or you can hunt for authentic, handmade items by local designers and craftsmen in less touristic parts of town.

If partying through the night is not your thing and you prefer to relax with on a cafe terrace, then you have plenty of options for that too.

If you like to bargain, then the Grand Bazaar is of course shopping heaven on Earth. Also, don’t forget to stock up on exotic spices, olives or the great selection of nuts available.

Istanbul's famous Istiklal Caddesi

BREATHTAKING VIEWS

CELEBRATE

There is no shortage of breathtaking views from the city. One of my favorites is the city’s silhouette seen from a boat on the Bosphorus during sunset. In second place comes the view from the bridges, unfortunately you need a ride to experience that. For a 360 panoramic view of Istanbul, you can visit the Galata Tower or one of the many rooftop bars.

This beautiful world we live in has many wonderful and exotic destinations to chose from. From Asia to the Indias, from South America to Africa, from Eastern Europe to North America, there are thousands of cities and regions we must visit, but for many reasons, Istambul definitely makes the top 40. Consider making it your next one.

An Italian

LOVE STORY

T

he development of Italian cuisine mirrors our city’s rich diversity.

Mediterranean influences bring fish and olives into culinary creations, carefully handcrafted ziti, cavatelli, and other types of pasta hail from southern Italy, and exquisite desserts such as tiramisu find origins in the north, combining for a tasty eating experience renowned for its ability to bring people together. With under three dozen establishments offering fine Italian-style dishes from “The European Boot" in Greater Houston and narrowing it down to just under five in The Woodlands, we are seeking that experience that tops them all. And we believe to have found it. Zanti Italian Cuisine draws its name from one of the restaurant’s founders, Santiago Pelaez, whose affectionate nature and passion for pleasing others earned him the nickname “sentimental Santi” from his very large and teasing family. The joys of exploring food and cooking and caring for those around him are among his earliest memories.

120

As he and his brothers grew their family’s hospitality business over the years, and across several countries, it seemed inevitable to everyone that Santiago would open a restaurant in Southern Texas, together with his brothers and acclaimed Italian chef Stefano Ferrero from Piemonte, Italy.

l’ambiente, la compagnia, and l’ingrediente

romantically meet at Zanti Cusina Italiana This is a destination for a true Italian experience. Santiago believes that to eat well, you must not forget the importance of l’ambiente, la compagnia, and l’ingrediente -the atmosphere, the people, and of course, the ingredients- all essential to the Italian experience. And all of these are to be found at Zanti from the moment you walk through the front doors. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, designed in an elegant contemporary combination of brick, wood, leather, and brass. The lighting is beautifully balanced during the day between natural and artificial light, while very romantic in the evening. The service is impeccable throughout the entire experience from the moment you are greeted by the smiley hostess. I especially want to highlight this particular component, as the finest food in the world in the most impeccable setting, can be spoiled by the wrong server. I always expect the friendliest attitude balanced with a professional demeanor from my waiter or waitress. And equally important is not to be unnecessarily interrupted while enjoying the food and the conversation, while on the other

hand, I can't accept my attendant to vanish out of sight for over 3 minutes when needed. At Zanti, this fundamental part of our experience received an A+. It's all about an obvious great training. The wide selection of wines is mostly Italian, although there are also iconic domestic labels from California and Oregon; also fine French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Argentinian brands are available. You will definitely find the perfect match to your most demanding taste. The fresh homemade bread accompanied by fine olive oil or soft butter, is a must at an Italian table before your meal, and we enjoyed it very much at Zanti. Tasty warm bread right off the oven. We started our appetizers tour with Arancini, fried risotto balls, fontina cheese, on a spicy arrabbiata sauce. We also tried the Burrata Cheese, arugula, cherry heirloom tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil on a grilled rustic bread... amazing! Our first entrée was the Rib Eye Tagliata, a very tender sliced rib eye, an extraordinarily delicious spicy mustard sauce (a treasure of its own), arugula, cherry heirloom tomatoes, and crispy potatoes. This dish is a true sensation!

122

From the selection of pastas, we decided for the Pappardelle Al Ragú Di Ossobuco, made of fresh pappardelle tricolor pasta, saffron and veal ossobuco sauce. As for anyone with a good Italian ancestry, pasta is my thing, so this master recipe was one to enjoy and appreciate. The Truffle & Cheese Ravioli is another favorite. This ravioli pasta is cooked to perfection and filled with fontina cheese, taleggio cheese, burrata cheese, parmesan cheese sauce, and truffle oil. This is another must-have. We regret having left behind many other very enticing entrée options pending for our next visit. Closing a full Italian experience must include a good dessert, so we tried four: The traditional Piemonte Tiramisú is far superior to most other Tiramisús. The Vanilla Panna Cotta is a savory soft white pudding, accompanied by red berry coulis.

SIP ' N SAVOR

The third choice was a legendary HazelnutChocolate Cake; we closed with Bomboloni, original Italian donut holes on a bed of Nutella cream and chocolate sauce. After a taste of these dolce, you are in heaven. They are all equally delicious, and there are plenty more on the menu left for another pleasant surprise in the near future. The dining experience at Zanti Cucina was memorable and in every respect exceeded our expectations: the service, the atmosphere, and very especially the food, can definitely become addictive. We were delighted to learn that Santiago is getting ready to bring Zanti Cucina's success to River Oaks, planned to open next Spring. For right now, the trip to the Magnolia/ The Woodlands corridor is well worth it: 10000 Research Forest Dr, Magnolia, TX 77354 281.259.1300 | zanticucina.com
