ith Summer came a serious heat wave, and at LUXCIOR things are not any

cooler. "Hot" is being Latino, so we are used to it. As a matter of fact,

we just wrapped up the hottest auto show in Houston: The 2016 edition

of the HOUSTON EXOTIC AUTO FESTIVAL at NRG Center. The event

was a success, in spite of the inclement weather. With nearly 3,000 guests (over three times what we attracted last year in Spring), we all enjoyed the best luxury automobiles from the top stores in Houston, alongside premier aftermarket and fabulous non-automotive exhibitors, all under one roof. If you missed it, twenty-four pages of photography are awaiting you inside.

Let me bring to your attention that per Houstonian's request, we have decided to include a lot more content and advertising in English. It so happens that the vast majority of our target Latino audience is bilingual, so either language is fine with them, as long as we keep our Latin American flavor. But the thing is that many non-Hispanics are quite disappointed that they can't read Spanish and enjoy our pages. So there you have it: English -and still some Spanish- it is. I'll be paying attention to your feedback.

t’s 6 o’clock and you’ve just returned home from a long day of work. You set down your keys, hang up your coat and head to the dining room where you find dinner and two glasses of your favorite Cabernet laid out on the table.

It’s Friday night. You’re out with friends, enjoying a bottle of Malbec before catching an art opening. Or perhaps it’s your anniversary, and you’re touring the Silver Oak vineyard. You pause to sample the Merlot: an inviting nose of ripe black plum & blackberry.

Wine: it’s the perfect accompaniment to an already special occasion. It highlights the event, accentuating the indulgence of each moment. We enjoy it with our meal, on its own and, even celebrate its very creation with picturesque vineyard tours.

Artist Thomas Arvid has spent his life combining the luxury of wine with another one of his favorite indulgences: art. As he often sates, “Life without art is like dinner without wine. Why bother?”

We enjoy art for many of the same reasons as wine: for its independent beauty as well as its ability to evoke our most memorable occasions and places. Arvid has dedicated his life to captivating the enjoyment a glass of wine can bring to a situation. No matter when or where it’s shared, it slows down your surroundings, encouraging us to focus on the moment at hand.

Wineries such as Silver Oak Cellars, Far Niente and Diamond Creek Winery covet his works for their ability to translate the craftsmanship of wine to canvas. Arvid has a striking ability to balance his paintings in much the same way a winemaker seeks to balance his wine.

Arvid’s stunning depictions of larger than life scenes carry you beyond the glass or bottle into the scene and the very moment itself. The intimacy of two lone glasses on a crisp white table cloth, the sigh of contentment from a freshly corked bottle of Silver Oak or the camaraderie of the discarded bottles from a celebration amongst friends. His unique perspectives reveal the scene as if you just stumbled upon the moment, discovering it anew.

Arvid insists that wine should be approachable. Each painting exudes an unpretentious elegance that can be enjoyed by all in both the moment it represents as well as the experience it offers us each and every day we see the work. Whether enjoyed in a dining room, wine cellar or den, Arvid’s paintings remind us of a favorite bottle or a cherished evening. We are transported to the landscape to enjoy the moment and the wine again and again.

A Detroit native, Arvid did not indulge in an art-making career from the start.

His parents suggested he get an art degree and become a teacher, concerned for the financial security of his future. It wasn’t until he left his blue-collar home town that he took the plunge into painting as a full time career.

In the beginning, Arvid spent his time searching for a signature – something that would define his artwork. He stumbled upon wine during his “red period.” While painting a series of red, American icons including Campbell Soup cans, Coke cans and Converse high-top tennis shoes, his red wines from Napa seemed to sell before they were ever complete. He was soon commissioned to paint a bottle of Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon. The buyer insisted he drink the bottle before beginning the painting, and sharing it with his wife opened both his eyes and his palette. Arvid had inadvertently stumbled upon a universal language, telling the story of “the good life” through our culture’s love of wine.

Arvid is now represented by over 50 elite galleries in the US, Canada and Japan. Aaron LaPedis, owner of one of those galleries, says of Thomas, “I’ve been carrying his work for the last eleven years and find that it’s not

Ser una mujer hispana, productiva y exitosa en Estados Unidos no es cosa fácil; en el 2016 nos enfrentamos a un mundo de disyuntivas cuando empezamos nuestra vida laboral impresionante. Primero que nada el idioma, la preparación, pero sobre todo la idiosincrasia. Hemos de luchar contra viento y marea para que nuestro trabajo se vea valorado y nuestros esfuerzos sean reflejados en nuestra economía, y en un mundo tan competitivo en un país de inmigrantes; ya que ser mujer e hispana es realmente un RETO. Recuerdo hace algunos años cuando llegue a vivir a Estados Unidos, de pronto me sentía tan confundida con la manera de operar mi casa, mi estructura de limpieza de orden, del jardín, del tráfico, de las escuelas, etc.

Recuerdo claramente las dos o tres veces que me multaron por no haber cortado el pasto, o por no suspender el correo cuando salía de viaje, por haberme estacionado en un lugar prohibido o por hacer algo que en mi país natal era normal y aquí no, en verdad una locura… Nadie me había explicado!!!. A base de errores aprendí a desenvolverme en este país que le había dado la bienvenida a mi familia, y a valorar la seguridad y estabilidad que nos había traído a todos encontrarnos en este nuevo mundo.

Estados Unidos indiscutiblemente tiene dos características que me marcaron: es un país multicultural creado por inmigrantes y dos indiscutiblemente es un país de oportunidades donde un proyecto bien encaminado puede transformar la vida de generaciones.

Como mujer empresaria y madre de tres pequeñas tengo la OBLIGACION no solamente de dejarle a mi siguiente generación un patrimonio para que

puedan vivir, tengo la necesidad de enseñarles que esas oportunidades que la vida nos da (como vivir en este país) solamente pasan una vez en la vida y hay que agradecerlas. ¿Cómo? Con trabajo, entrega, disciplina y mucha pero mucha gratitud a esta nuestra comunidad.

Y es así, como ocho años después de haber llegado temerosa a esta ciudad, de haber sufrido el mal del “extrañamiento” de mi familia, amig@s, comida, etc, me he propuesto rodearme de mujeres que tienen las mismas inquietudes que yo, que desean ser exitosas, y que todos los días se levantan con esa hambre de triunfo familiar y profesional y que están dispuestas a ser parte de esa generación de cambio en los Estados Unidos.

Es por eso que me uní a Latin Women Initiative, una organización de mujeres como yo que quieren hacer la diferencia en este país ayudando a los que mas lo necesitan en una asociación dedicada a marcar pauta en la vida de las mujeres latinas y sus familias; a través del servicio y apoyo a organizaciones que proveen recursos, educación y servicios de salud a los hispanos más desfavorecidos.

Ha costado trabajo que los hispanos nos abramos camino!! Pero es momento de unirnos y trabajar juntos, de ver para adelante y hacer escuchar nuestra voz, con trabajo y agradecimiento a nuestro entorno.

Acuérdate que “si no das no cuenta”.

or 20 years, Virtuosi of Houston’s mission has been to cre ate a pre-professional climate and performance op portunities for Houston’s most focused young musicians

(11–18 years of age), regardless of race, religion or financial status and to bring an expanded repertoire of chamber music to Houston.

Virtuosi of Houston (VoH) is a premier youth chamber orchestra for gifted instrumentalists created to increase education and performance opportunities leading to a music profession for Houston’s middle to high school age musicians and to bring an expanded repertoire of chamber works to Houston audiences. The chamber group is smaller than a typical symphony orchestra, allowing these exceptional musicians to experience increased confidence, leadership, responsibility and skill through individual attention from two world-class conductors.

Talented young musicians focus on a chamber orchestra repertoire under a unique co-conductor structure of instruction and direction by two professors from the University of Houston Moores School of Music. Franz Anton Krager, Professor and Director of Orchestras and Andrzej Grabiec, Professor of Violin the founding artistic directors and conductors of VoH, actively participate in 30 pre-concert rehearsals per year. VoH holds auditions each Spring

and Fall before the season begins. VOH ensures that our unique music education and professional performance opportunities are available to all who meet our artistic standards by offering tuition support for those who need it. According to a public opinion survey conducted by Americans for the Arts, 91% of respondents believe that the arts are vital to a well-rounded education and 96% agree that the arts belong to everyone, not just the fortunate or privileged. Local school districts cut elementary art and music programs, and in some cases only the affluent are able to access the arts.

For those families who aren’t able to afford VoH programs, financial assistance is available.

WHAT WE DO AND WHO WE SERVE Our 2015–2016 season orchestra consisted of 52 members, from 32 different zip codes and three are homeschooled students. We provide between $4,000 and $20,000 in tuition assistance to low-income students annually. Any student that qualifies to be a part of the VoH orchestra is accepted regardless of their family’s financial circumstance. No student is ever turned away due to his or her family’s inability to pay the tuition. The distinct desire to

provide all potential students the opportunity to engage in activities that they may not be exposed to otherwise is what drives our community impact.

VoH programs focus on expanding music education and performance opportunities through chamber music rehearsals and concerts, a concerto competition, master classes, a small ensemble program, and a small ensemble summer workshop.

VoH performs four major public concerts each year. Two of those concerts are at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Zilkha Hall, one free concert at Jone’s Hall for the Houston Symphony’s

Youth Orchestra Festival and one at our annual fundraising dinner and concert. We open each season with our Opening Night Concert in December. The Youth Orchestra Festival is in January. We have the Annual Immanuel and Helen B. Olshan Annual Concerto Concert in April which features the two first place winners in the winds/piano division and the strings division. These concerts provide our students unique opportunities to perform in worldclass venues typically experienced only by musicians who have already completed their university studies and achieved professional standing.

Producida por FoxTelecolombia para TELEMUNDO y basada en la historia escrita por Gustavo Bolívar, "Sin Senos Sí Hay Paraíso" narra la historia de Catalina "La pequeña" (Gaitán), la hija de Doña Hilda (Catherine Siachoque) y Albeiro (Fabián Ríos), quien buscará la redención de su familia ante el mundo de violencia y prostitución que los ha llenado de desgracias y pérdidas. Las estrellas Catherine Siachoque y Fabián Ríos regresan a esta gran historia para seguir contando la vida de Doña Hilda y Albeiro. Carolina Gaitán le dará vida a Catalina "La pequeña", una joven pura que creció rodeada por el amor de sus padres. It all started with a beautiful kick-off party at OMNI Houston Hotel, three days before the show, where people came to get a small advanced taste of what was coming.

There was also a trophy and two additional awards for the best three exhibitors; Louis Shanks Fine Home Furnishings took home the gold.

Presented by FARMERS Insurance and produced by LUXCIOR Magazine, in partnership with the most prominent names in the automotive and luxury industries, and driven by our passion for exotic cars, the 2016 edition of the festival was a complete success.

Including luxury dealerships, top performance aftermarket exhibitors and a variety of magnificent brands from non-automotive industries, the show offered the nearly 3,000 visitors the opportunity to enjoy dozens of amaz-

The threatening weather and a few early morning showers along I45 and other parts of town, became an expected turn-off for private exhibitors to drive their exotics through Houston's muddy streets on Sunday morning. But that didn't stop over 2,900 fans from showing up to enjoy the best of Houston. This was quite a step up, considering that last year, our premiere edition welcomed a little over 900 visitors in Spring, near The Woodlands. We expect to exceed the 5,000-guest mark in 2017 by producing a much larger event.

Just about every single luxury and exotic brand had strong representation.

Additionally, we had numerous customized eccentrics and spectacular motorcycles. MarineMax brought their gorgeous yachts and boats to round up a terrific display of luxury.

The public was delighted by the live music from one of Houston's most amazing orchestras: Virtuosi, made possible by Karen Needham. They offered us pieces from classic to contemporary, and movie themes; simply sensational.

Of course, behind the scenes, Manuel Candia-Reuter, LUXCIOR's VP of Marketing, worked out his remarkable talent to co-strategize the show alongside Martin Gondra, LUXCIOR's publisher. Judy Nichols, Houston's PR wizard, did her magic, again. Terry Mansfield was our MC. One of the most exciting components of the show was the fact that guests were allowed inside just about every single model on display, something quite

unusual, especially with luxury brands. Dealership Ambassadors were probably quite nervous, but that didn't stop them from allowing visitors to enjoy a full experience of the vehicles. I must say, all dealerships present were simply awesome. At the end of the day, cars went back to their stores with nothing other than firgerprints to wipe off. That was great news for the insurance company (Farmers, of course) covering several million dollars in exotic automobiles.

The Ferrari F12 Autodynamica Challenge This stunning Ferrari F12 is something truly unique and exclusive: Only three in the US, and this one was at the HOUSTON EXOTIC AUTO FESTIVAL. Getting a more aggressive look and more horsepower seems something easy for anyone, but when you have a car that is already impressive, things can get complicated. Even when we know that our goal was a meaner stance and more power. The question was how to do it.

The Ferrari F12 has an impeccable style and a harmonious balance that work seamlessly with its 730 horsepower and a price that reaches almost a third of a million dollars, one wrong move could ruin years of work and experience of one of the most prestigious car manufacturers in the world.

The perfect solution came from a company located in the suburbs of Munich in Germany called NOVITEC, under the name Novitecrosso and with 25 years of experience working with Ferrari automobiles, this company offers the exclusive program called N-Largo.

The N-long program was a new challenge for NOVITEC that focused on the outside of the vehicle and increase power and aerodynamic balance, the name comes from the fusion of the first letter of the company and the word "long" that in Italian it means wide. The car takes up 4.3 inches more lane than the standard model, its width now a massive 4 inches.

Amplifying the body's dramatic proportions is a bespoke set of deeply concave Novitec NF5 NL wheels. The massive 21x9.5 fronts and 22x12 rears (wearing Pirelli P Zero tires, 255/30 ZR21 and 335/25 ZR22, respectively) barely fit in the wells, but the effect is arresting. Novitec is better known for producing high-end wheels than body parts, so it's no surprise that these three-piece rims were made using highly advanced forging technology.

There aren't many changes to the original structure: Most of the factory parts could be retrofitted, since they are replaced with Novitec-manufactured carbon-fiber pieces bolted to existing mounting points. The real major mod is the significantly wider rear fenders (the front axle is 2.3 inches wider, while the rear adds a further couple of inches to that), where the original sections were cut away to make room for new fender liners (carbon fiber, naturally) to accommodate the bigger wheel/tire combo.

2016 HOUSTON EXOTIC AUTO FESTIVAL's #1 in "Performance" Category: Ferrari F12, property of Teodoro G., presented by Autodynamica. One of only three in the US. Considering an F12 puts 730 hp to the rear wheels, it's supposedly not far from its limits of traction. Extracting bigger numbers from this jewel of a 6.3L engine would be inefficient. Novitec still offers four stages of tune, but even the most advanced remains somewhat symbolic.

These upgrades vary from reprogramming the ECU and raising the rev limit from 8,500 to 8,900 rpm (good for 773 hp and 518 lb-ft) to a stiffer suspension, dropping the ride by 1.5 inches (no worries, a lift system helps tackle a speed hump or a ramp in a parking garage), and a new quad-pipe, stainless steel, competition-derived exhaust that cuts 20 pounds and frees up a few horses and decibels thanks to the active sound-flap function. Removing catalytic converters altogether is the final step for countries where emissions regulations are liberal and supercar drivers are happy-such as the Middle East, where most N-Largos are bound to end up.

The bedroom is extra special because we can completely claim it as ours. We have the freedom to decorate it any way we want. Speaking of decorating, it is tough to dress the bedroom our way because we do not have the expertise.

Styling the bedroom by ourselves can present a variety of obstacles.

The challenges of designing your own bedroom should not hinder you from giving it your own mark. The resources available today made it easier for anyone to come up with a design, he will be proud to present. People with varying personality can now show their individuality. A music lover for example, can present his love for music by putting up musical wall art in his room and it will not look out of place.

Below are additional tips on how to add your personality to your bedroom design: 1. Ask yourself what kind of personality you want your room to represent.

It is easy to say that you want your room to embody your personality, but it is tough to decide how you want the result to look like. How will you represent your perky personality? How can your bedroom translate your fond for fashion? These are just some of the questions you have to answer.

One effective tip would be to create a theme for the bedroom. If you want it to have a happy feel, use colors. However, you have to be careful. If you are not, you room will end up a disaster of mismatched shades.

2. Think of the pieces that will go into the bedroom design.

The different items that will go in the bedroom will speak a lot about you.

Your choice of bed will indicate your style. If you like modern style, you probably want to pick the clean-cut design. If you prefer contemporary designs, you will probably have your eyes set on the bed with bold patterns with creative mix of colors and shapes.

There are several pieces today that can represent your personality. If you are a laid-back person, you can achieve a relaxing backdrop for the room using tropical wall decor.

3. Personalize some of the items that go in the bedroom.

If your room is pre-decorated, you do not have to alter everything. Keep in mind that you can still give it your mark by personalizing some of the items you will use in the room. You can always sew drapes and curtains for your window. You can even get crafty with your frames, and how about displaying your own painting. Personalizing some of your accessories is great way to give your bedroom the personal touch you want.

tu Menton Muchos dirían que un mentón “bello” se debe a una mandíbula prominente, pero desafortunadamente, a menudo la grasa puede acumularse debajo de la barbilla y no hay dieta ni ejercicio que la haga desaparecer. Hasta ahora, la única manera de reducir la papada era a través de procedimientos quirúrgicos, como la liposucción o una platismoplastia. Muchos evitamos este tipo de procedimientos debido a los riesgos de la anestesia general, las posibles cicatrices, el costo y el temor a un resultado inesperado. Por suerte tenemos dos fantásticas soluciones que funcionan de formas completamente diferentes para el tratamiento de papadas de cualquier tamaño. Principles of Positive Discipline

P

olicy makers, educators, child rights activists, and researchers from 21 different countries including the United States, England, France, Israel, Ethiopia, Australia, and New Zealand, recently gathered in Dallas for “The Global Summit on Ending Corporal Punishment and Promoting Positive Discipline”.

Dr. George Holden of Southern Methodist University organized this conference, the first ever to bring together internationally recognized experts from diverse fields to promote awareness of child rights, the negative consequence of using corporal punishment (e.g., spanking and other forms of physical discipline), and ways of encouraging positive discipline in homes and schools.

Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff, Co-Chair of the Summit’s Organizing Committee and a professor at The University of Texas at Austin, summarized the results of many studies examining the negative effects of corporal punishment of children. She asserts “until researchers, clinicians, and parents can definitively demonstrate the presence of positive effects of corporal punishment, including effectiveness in halting future misbehavior, not just the absence of negative effects, we as psychologists cannot responsibly recommend its use”.

Careful review of the research literature provides a clear picture: there are no positive effects of such punishment, only negative effects.

Gershoff acknowledges that discipline is one of the most challenging tasks of being a parent. Given that very few parents receive formal training on how to discipline their children effectively, they primarily learn “on the job” or default to using the strategies their parents used. Gershoff laments, “this unfortunately means we sometimes use discipline methods that are familiar but not effective”, such as corporal punishment. This brings us to the important question of what constitutes effective, positive discipline that can teach children acceptable behavior.

Drawing on the research literature as well as years working with children, Gershoff outlines four main principles of effective positive discipline.

1. Guide, not punish. Punishment can teach children what not to do, but it is even more important for parents to teach their children what to do.

2. Focus on the positives. Building a strong relationship with your child is the cornerstone of effective discipline.

3. Be prepared. Let your child know what type of behavior you expect in different situations.

4. Be consistent. Children appreciate consistency – create fair consequences, share these with your child, and implement when needed.

n today’s fast paced, tech savvy world, people are fortunate if they have the time to exercise regularly or squeeze something moderately nutritious to eat into their busy schedule. We know well that obesity and all the related health concerns that come with it (diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc.) are rising meteorically in our country. We all try to do our best to make healthy choices, we take the stairs more, walk on our lunch breaks, visit a local health club and try to eat healthy but, what if I told you that one of the best ways to safeguard against these issues, one of the most healthy choices you can make, requires no effort at all. That in fact, by making this choice you will do everything a little bit better. This activity can actually make you smarter, better looking and more pleasant to be around.

What if I told you that this “miracle drug,” was simply 7-8 hours of restful sleep per night?

A good night’s sleep is something that most of us these days regard as an unnecessary luxury. According to a study by the American Cancer Society, today more than 30% of adult men and women between the ages of 30 and 64 report sleeping less than six hours per night. The decrease in average sleep duration in the U.S. has occurred over the same time period as the increase in the prevalence of obesity and diabetes. I’ve heard every excuse there is for why people fail to clock out at a reasonable hour and sleep for 7-8 hours per night. I understand that deadlines have to be met and that between work and family and friends, hopefully a little exercise too, there’s just “not enough hours in the day.” However, when we look at the repercussions of sleep deprivation, they make a strong case for getting more shut eye.

Every now and then we are forced to pull an “all-nighter” or sacrifice sleep for something that we perceive to be more important. Missing a couple hours here or there may ultimately have little effect on us because we tend to catch up over the course of the next few days or on the weekend. Those of us that consistently work 10+ hours per day then try to fit in all of the other responsibilities of life and just accept that they will get 5-6 hours of sleep - wake up! I’m talking to you! Missing just an hour or two of sleep per night can be

detrimental to your health. In a University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine study, chronic restriction of sleep to six hours or less per night produced cognitive performance deficits equivalent to up to two nights of total sleep deprivation. Losing 1-2 hours per night is like not sleeping for two full days.

In the same study, it was also indicated that more than 50% of the people suffering from partial sleep loss reported that they felt completely normal. It seems that the illusions of getting enough sleep prompts people to feel as if they are rested when in fact, their performance on tasks such as problem solving, critical thinking, reflexes, and focus have diminished. Most people just don’t know what being fully rested feels like anymore.

Assume that performance was not a concern of ours. Let’s say that we “get by just fine” with six or less hours of sleep, and work and family are not at all affected. We would basically be lying to ourselves, but I’ll play the devil’s advocate here. One of the most serious risks of sleep deprivation is the effect it has on our hormones. Hormones make the call on every chemical function in our bodies. Most of us have heard of the term insulin resistance before.

Whether we really understand it or not, we accept that insulin is a hormone and insulin resistance is directly tied to diabetes and obesity. One thing most people don’t know is that insulin resistance may develop progressively with increasing exposure to partial sleep loss, according to a study by the National Institute of Health. Sleep deprivation can also have a negative effect on the production of testosterone, essential in both men and women for building and maintaining lean muscle, not to mention sex drive.

Put all of this together and you’ve got a recipe for weight gain, muscle loss, chronic fatigue, the possibility of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, hormonal imbalances, increased risks of automobile related injury or even death. Now I know that some of you will dismiss this and continue to burn the midnight oil. Some will agree with me and all of the evidence, but deny that they suffer from anything. I’m not asking everyone to change; all I’m asking is that you sleep on it.
