ut of my 27+ years as a publisher, one-third has been well-lived in fabulous Houston, as LUXCIOR is celebrating its 9th Anniversary. As I tell everyone, I wish I had known Houston when I first moved to the US back in 1980. Definitely, a market 10X more progressive, friendly, and in most respects better than Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, where I have published in the past. Looking back at our humble beginnings in 2013 as a small 48-page bilingual publication, thanks to the preference and loyalty of our partners, we evolved -even through the pandemic- to become the largest, highest quality print, and one of the top luxury magazines in Texas. And also the most diverse in content, evenly representing the deep multi-cultural landscape of our region. Ultra-luxury brands like Lamborghini Houston and ACPS Plastic Surgery count among those names that supported our growth from our very beginning to this day. Great names like Vander Dys Fine Jewelers, Sal y Pimienta (and before Tango Malbec), Freedom Supercars, and many others have been our clients for years now, and I’m very thankful for their business and friendship. We are here to properly represent their prestige and reputation. I’d also like to thank our growing audience for their following and appreciation. But more than anyone else, I must thank our God for always being there for me as my invisible (not “silent”) partner. He’s always been a determining factor in my decision-making process when it comes to content and the way I run my business. I am over-excited to announce that we are almost ready to open our new office ten minutes from The Galleria, home not only to LUXCIOR but also to our new venture, the Houston Black Book of Luxury, and G-power Marketing. Stay tuned to our social media @luxciormagazine to join us for the upcoming celebrations. On a final note, I’d like to bring to your attention the urgency to support Ukraine with our donations and help Ukrainians that may choose to make Houston their temporary or permanent home. Let’s open our hearts, our business through employment, and even our homes. What a privilege it is for us to be part of relieving the unbearable pain inflicted on so many beautiful families just like yours and mine by this unjust, and cruel invasion! May God bless us as Americans, although more often than not we take for granted the freedom, peace, and prosperity we enjoy. But right now, above all else, I encourage you to join me in prayer, that God will extend His mercy on Ukraine and put a stop to this insanity.

XOCHI The Ancient Culinary Art of Oaxaca

H

ouston is the city with the highest concentration and variety of international cuisines, properly representing the most diverse city in the nation. Here, you can enjoy them all.

After recently trying Houston’s two top Indian cuisines, one could be convinced that no other place in the world offers the vast variety of seasonings and flavors of the Asian country; until we tried the food of Oaxaca, in Southern Mexico.

36

SIP'N SAVOR

Mexico Oaxaca Oaxaca is without a doubt the most representative state of the ancient Mexican indigenous culture, with an incomparable richness of colors, traditions, arts, aromas, and flavors. Who doesn’t know Oaxaca cannot say that truly knows Mexico. Xochi is, unquestionably, and in every way, the most vivid Oaxacan and Mexican experience in H-Town. Xochi, taken from Xóchitl, “goddess of flowers”, meaning “to bloom” or “to catch fire”, is the creative effort of award-winning chef Hugo Ortega, celebrating the indigenous culinary richness of his homeland, Oaxaca, and its varied geographic regions, and the preservation of primitive customs with an unparalleled menu of food and drinks. During our visit we had the privilege of sitting down with him to discuss and taste his dishes, accompanied by his manager, Elvis Espinoza, also from Oaxaca, and equally profound connoisseur of Hugo Ortega’s international cuisine. Located parallel to the elegant lobby of the Marriott Marquis hotel in downtown Houston, this is possibly the most prestigious representative of this extraordinary cuisine, offering a variety of dishes as exotic and deliciously prepared as no other, in a luxurious and sophisticated environment. Xochi is a highly sought-after culinary experience for Houstonians and travelers alike. In fact, many regular visitors to our city include at least one visit to Xochi among their stay plans.

Among the wide range of products and components imported directly from the state of Oaxaca, Hugo uses a variety of corn of different colors, such as white, yellow, red, blue or black corn, each suitable for different recipes; for example, the Tlayudas use mostly white corn, while the Tetelas may use the yellow or blue varieties.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

It is important to note that corn is native to Mexico and therefore has the greatest diversity of races. Oaxaca is considered one of the most important genetic reservoirs of corn in Mexico and in the world, concentrating 35 races. We had the opportunity to try several of Chef Ortega’s renowned dishes, which included the Zaachila Beef Barbecue, a grilled rolled steak, seasoned with holy leaf, guajillo puya and costeño chili broth, potato, carrot, and corn dough. Another memorable dish is Bistec con Mole de Chicatana, a thin cut of grilled certified Black Angus, black bean tamale, and ant mole.

40

Here I want to highlight that the moles -one of the typical components of fine Oaxacan cuisine- are presented in a variety of colors, flavors and intensities, to satisfy the most demanding of palates. The “Mole Tasting” option on the menu is presented with four of Xochi’s special moles, with homemade doubled tlayuda, beans, and cheese. These moles are guaranteed to keep you coming back for more. The Tlayuda de Res -grilled steak, black mole, cheese, and greens- and the Tlayuda de Hongos -roasted mushrooms, fresh huitlacoche, vegetarian beans with goat cheese, holy leaf and yellow mole- are two entrées that you should also definitely try.

SIP'N SAVOR Among the appetizers we recommend the Red Salad, which consists of roasted beets, baby red oak, roasted tamala squash, piloncillo and tangerine dressing, candied pumpkin seeds, and amaranth. A true delight. It is noteworthy that the presentation of each dish is a true work of art. Here it can be forgiven that you want to take a selfie with each course because you will hardly find a menu with the presentation offered by the artists in the kitchen of this recital of shapes, textures, flavors, and colors. Another curiosity that we learned during our visit to Xochi was that cocoa is also native to Oaxaca, from where it was exported for cultivation to all corners of the earth. Xochi offers a selection of desserts using chocolate in a masterful and creative way as you will rarely find anywhere else.

Enchiladas

Negro en Negro

The bar offers a wide variety of typical drinks and cocktails inspired by the best of Mexico, and of course it cannot ignore the best margaritas, mezcal and tequila, among other alternatives. The atmosphere at Xochi is pleasant and sumptuous, in a mixture of a very contemporary and cozy design, with the colorful and peculiar style and indigenous art of Oaxaca. But as always, the most important thing is the courtesy and dedication of the staff, which clearly reflect the professionalism and kindness of its owner.

Infladita de Conejo

Xochi is definitely a favorite of LUXCIOR with our highest rating. We encourage you to visit it for a memorable experience second to none. Pulpo

Mystical Vietnam

T

By Linda Strickland

A HOUSTON CULTURAL JEWEL

exas is home to nearly a quarter of a million Vietnamese, while more than half the entire State’s population lives in Houston. Additionally, Vietnamese is the third most-spoken language after English and Spanish.

Vietnamese Americans have significantly contributed to Houston’s multicultural landscape. Since 1975, with the end of the Vietnam war and the first wave of Vietnamese immigrants, enclaves within Harris and Fort Bend counties have grown, creating a viable ethnic group that has changed the residential and business districts in the greater Houston area. By 2005 Houston had grown to 32,000 Vietnamese and Vietnamese Americans, making it the second-largest Vietnamese American community in the United States after San Jose, California. In 2006 Greater Houston grew to 58,000, giving it the third-largest such community of all U.S. metropolitan areas. By 2007 many Vietnamese Americans in Southern California were moving to Texas to take advantage of lower costs of living. Given this remarkable growth, the governments of the U.S. and Vietnam officially agreed to open a Consulate-General of Vietnam in Houston in August 2009, and the consulate held its official inauguration on March 25, 2010.

There’s more to Vietnam than the traditional image of rice paddies and conical hats. There you’ll find a country bursting with energy and forward motion. You’ll feel it in the hum and activity on the streets. You’ll see it in the way Vietnamese welcome you to their homes, invite you to taste their food, and proudly show you their rich culture. You’ll sense it in the options and opportunities all around. Vietnam is an exotic country known for its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas, and picturesque and bustling cities. Hanoi, the capital, pays homage to the nation’s iconic Communist-era leader, Ho Chi Minh, via a huge marble mausoleum. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) has French colonial landmarks, plus Vietnamese War history museums and the Củ Chi tunnels, used by Viet Cong soldiers. With a population shy of 99 million people, Vietnam is the 15th most populated country in the world, and it amounts to 1.25% of the world population. Slightly larger than the State of New Mexico, Vietnam’s neighbors are China in the North, Laos, and Cambodia in the East, and a 2,025-mile-long coastal line over the South China Sea.

A QUICK LOOK AT VIETNAMESE MILLENARY DYNASTIES

As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Harris County had 80,409 ethnic Vietnamese, making up 28.7% of the Asians in the county. As of the same year, 15% of the Asians in Fort Bend County were of Vietnamese origins, making them the third-largest Asian ethnic group in the county.

When you understand the millenary history of Vietnam, you can understand its profound richness and the extraordinary wealth of value this wonderful community brings to our city.

An estimated 130,000 Vietnamese live in the greater Houston area today, representing about 24.5% of the total Asian American population across the region, according to Pew Research Center. However, the number is believed to be even greater. Their social, cultural, and economic impact on our community is substantial.

The Hồng Bàng dynasty of the Hùng kings first established in 2879 BC is considered the first Vietnamese state in the History of Vietnam (then known as Xích Quỷ and later Văn Lang). In 257 BC, the last Hùng king was defeated by Thục Phán. He consolidated the Lạc Việt and Âu Việt tribes to form the Âu Lạc, proclaiming himself An Dương Vương. In 179 BC, a Chinese general named Zhao

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

The Golden Bridge is lifted by two giant hands in the tourist resort on Ba Na Hill in Da Nang. Tuo defeated An Dương Vương and consolidated Âu Lạc into Nanyue. However, Nanyue was itself incorporated into the empire of the Chinese Han dynasty in 111 BC after the Han–Nanyue War. For the next thousand years, what is now northern Vietnam remained mostly under Chinese rule. By the early 10th century, Vietnam had gained autonomy, but not sovereignty, under the Khúc family.

The Vietnamese dynasties reached their zenith in the Lê dynasty of the 15th century, especially during the reign of Emperor Lê Thánh Tông (1460–1497). Between the 11th and 18th centuries, Vietnam expanded southward in a process known as Nam tiến (“Southward expansion”), eventually conquering the kingdom of Champa and part of the Khmer Kingdom.

By the early 10th century, Vietnam had gained autonomy, but not sovereignty, under the Khúc family. In AD 938, the Vietnamese lord Ngô Quyền defeated the forces of the Chinese Southern Han state at Bạch Đằng River and achieved full independence for Vietnam after a millennium of Chinese domination. Renamed Đại Việt (Great Viet), Vietnamese society enjoyed a golden era under the Lý and Trần dynasties. During the rule of the Trần Dynasty, Đại Việt repelled three Mongol invasions. Meanwhile, the Mahāyāna branch of Buddhism flourished and became the state religion. Following the 1406–7 Ming–Hồ War, which overthrew the Hồ dynasty, Vietnamese independence was interrupted briefly by the Chinese Ming dynasty, but was restored by Lê Lợi, the founder of the Lê dynasty.

From the 16th century onward, civil strife and frequent political infighting engulfed much of Vietnam. First, the Chinese-supported Mạc dynasty challenged the Lê dynasty’s power. After the Mạc dynasty was defeated, the Lê dynasty was nominally reinstalled. Actual power, however, was divided between the northern Trịnh lords and the southern Nguyễn lords, who engaged in a civil war for more than four decades before a truce was called in the 1670s. During this period, the Nguyễn expanded southern Vietnam into the Mekong Delta, annexing the Central Highlands and the Khmer lands in the Mekong Delta. The division of the country ended a century later when the Tây Sơn brothers established a new dynasty. However, their rule did not last long, and they were defeated by the remnants of the Nguyễn lords, led by Nguyễn Ánh, aided by the French. Nguyễn Ánh unified Vietnam, and established the Nguyễn dynasty, ruling under the name Gia Long. LUXCIOR.com

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

WORLD-CLASS DESTINATION There are so many insightful tours, amazing dishes and fun activities in Vietnam, you’ll never run out of interesting things to do. In fact, Vietnam is becoming one of the world’s top destinations owing to its endless natural beauty. White sand beaches, limestone mountains, terraced rice fields and more beckon travelers from around the globe. Here are some of the most beautiful places to visit in Vietnam.

Cát Bà Island

Đà Lạt

Da Nang

Nestled in the southern highland region of the country, picturesque Đà Lạt is a refreshing break from the south’s tropical climate. Cool temperatures and fresh air – not the mention the gorgeous surroundings – make Đà Lạt a must-see destination. You can catch a quick flight from Saigon or hop on a bus.

Da Nang is Vietnam’s third largest city and lies approximately 30km (19mi) north of Hoi An. This is the city you’ll fly into before driving south into the colonial town, but Da Nang is also a great city to explore. Like any coastal Vietnamese town, Da Nang’s white sand and clear water beaches are a must for beach lovers whilst the city has some fabulous nightlife too. The Dragon Bridge is illuminated at night and the whole place looks incredible from the vantage point of one of its many rooftop bars.

Cát Bà Island lies on the southeastern edge of Vietnam’s iconic Ha Long Bay and is a regular top choice for travelers. Pristine beaches, clear waters, and dense jungles make this island extremely popular during high season, so it’s best to try and visit when the crowds are low outside of the summer season.

Phú Quốc

Charming Hoi An is another top choice for Vietnamese and foreign vacationers, and it features on Culture Trip’s specially curated small-group Vietnam tour. The old city is full of colonial architecture and is a lovely place to take in an early morning or late afternoon stroll, when the sun is no longer at its blistering peak. Lush gardens, illuminated lanterns glowing after dark, good food and gorgeous beaches await at this dreamy, ancient spot in central Vietnam.

Phú Quốc island is undergoing massive construction to accommodate the recent flood of domestic and foreign tourists and is predicted to become Asia’s top vacation destination in the coming years. Phú Quốc is home to dense jungles and stunning waterfalls and the northern beaches are still relatively untouched by tourism.

Hà Giang This northern province shares a border with China and is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes in Vietnam. Terraced rice fields, forested limestone and granite mountains and magnificent caves are this province’s claims to fame, as well as Quản Bạ pass – also known as Heaven’s gate for its panoramic views of terraced rice fields.

Sa Pa

Sơn Đoòng Cave

Sa Pa is a town situated in northwestern Hoàng Liên Son Mountains and close to Phang Xi Pang, Vietnam’s highest peak. The town is home to some of Vietnam’s indigenous tribes, such as the H’Môngpeople, who regularly offer authentic homestays and guided tours of the surrounding glorious landscape as well as climbs up Phang Xi Pang.

Located near Vietnam’s border with Laos in the north-central province of Quang Binh, Sơn Đoòng Cave is known as the largest cave passage in the world. Stretching for more than 5km (3mi) and large enough to house an entire block of New York City, Sơn Đoòng Cave is an unparalleled adventure.

Mekong Delta Vietnam’s ‘rice bowl’ is a huge maze of rivers, swamps, small islands and lush greenery everywhere you look. The inhabitants’ main modes of transportation are small boats. When visiting you’ll have tons of options. You can either stay in a quaint homestay on the river, visit the bustling town of Can Tho, tour ride paddies, or even visit a crocodile farm! Keep your eyes peeled on the river – thousands of families breed crocodiles in the region and unknown numbers of the giant reptiles have escaped into the mighty Mekong.

52

Ban Gioc Waterfall This is actually the name for two waterfalls on the Quây Sơn River lying within the Unesco-listed Cao Bang Geopark in northeastern Vietnam. The falls straddle the border of Vietnam and China and measure an impressive 30m (98ft). These falls are in an extraordinarily scenic location and they are one of the few places best to see during the monsoon season between May-October, when the river’s flow is at its most powerful.

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

Côn Đảo Islands The Con Dao islands form an archipelago southeast of Phu Quoc, with Côn Đảo its largest. The island played a significant role during the Indochina war as it was where many French political prisoners were held and executed. It is also the location where Vietnam’s national heroine was put to death at age 19. Make sure to visit her tomb and nearby museum before, or after, enjoying the island’s splendid beaches. Huế Huế is a historical city in central Vietnam that housed the last emperors of the Nguyen dynasty. The ancient citadel is a spectacular sight to behold, especially during the annual Huế festival. There are temples, pagodas and delicious cuisine famous throughout the country. Along the Perfume River are multiple tombs of former Nguyen dynasty emperors – make sure to visit the architecturally ornate tomb of ancient emperor Khải Định. Tempted to visit? You can do so with Culture Trip as part of our exclusive 12-day Vietnam adventure, which includes a street food tour and cooking masterclass in Huế. Mũi Né Sand Dunes Vietnam really has it all – you can even experience the desert. The red and white sand dunes of Mũi Né are very popular with tourists and locals on a weekend

trip from Saigon. Quad bikes and dune buggies are abound, so don’t expect any peace and quiet. Check the time before you schedule a trip there – no one wants to be on the dunes when the sun is at its peak. It’s best to go super early to avoid the scorching heat. Cát Tiên National Park This protected, tropical forest is a 3-4 hour bus ride north of Saigon and is home to diverse wildlife, including several endangered species of monkeys and rare tropical birds. Some of the gigantic trees are hundreds of years old and there are ancient temples and artifacts lying on the edge of the park. Beware, the park is also home to venomous snakes and scorpions so exercise caution when on the trails. Hạ Long Bay This iconic Vietnamese landscape deserves its fame. Embarking on an overnight cruise through the emerald waters is an experience like no other. Sunsets over the bay are magnificent and the mist rising off the waters adds an eerie, mysterious element to this geological wonder. It’s the number one tourist destination in Vietnam so it can be crammed during high season, but gazing at the limestone formations in the water is worth it.

THE WORLD RALLIES BEHIND UKRAINE with humanitarian aid and with supporting immigration policies For the past two months we have all witnessed the unprovoked Russian military invasion of Ukraine, causing a humanitarian crisis in Europe, unseen since World War II. At the same time, we have also seen the courage and the bravery of the Ukrainian people uniting the world in overwhelming support of their fight for freedom and democracy. More than 4.9 million individuals have been forced to flee Ukraine and seek refuge in various countries in Europe, with an estimated 7.1 million displaced within the country. In addition to urgent humanitarian aid, to be able to help with such rapid unprecedented migration numbers the European Countries have re-activated the Temporary Protective Directive established in 2001 to assist with emergency situations and mass influxes. On March 4th, 2022, the European Council adopted unanimously the temporary protection for people fleeing Ukraine due to the war. Here are some of the immigration policies that countries around the world have established to assist Ukrainians who are unable to return home safely.

European Union (EU) - and immigration policies: The EU member states (27 of them) are issuing Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for Ukrainians and eligible applicants (residents of Ukraine and their family members residing in Ukraine as of February 24, 2022) in any EU member state. The TPS Status will be issued for one year, from March 4, 2022, until March 4, 2023, and it can be extended in increments of six months up to three years, depending on the situation in Ukraine. The TPS would allow individuals to have residency permits for the entire duration of TPS up to three years; as well as access to employment, access to social welfare and housing; medical treatment and education for minors, including opportunities for families to reunite.

The United Kingdom (UK) and immigration policies: Even though no longer a member of the European Union, on 4 March 2022, the UK launched the Ukraine Family Scheme program. The Ukraine Family Scheme allows immediate and extended family members of British nationals and people settled in the Immigration Attorney, Olsa Cano

Immigration Attorney Olsa 86

UK, to be welcomed to the country safely. Those accepted under the scheme will be granted a visa that lasts three years, giving them certainty and ensuring their future in the country. The Homes for Ukraine Scheme will allow people seeking sanctuary with no family ties to the UK to be sponsored by individuals or organizations who can offer them a home, such as a spare room or unoccupied residential self-contained unit. There is no limit on this scheme. It is open to Ukrainian nationals and their immediate family members. The UK is welcoming as many Ukrainians as they wish to come to the country who have sponsors to support them.

Canada and Immigration Policies: On March 3, 2022, the Canadian government announced new immigration policies for Ukrainian citizens by providing two paths to allow for temporary stay and permanent residency in the country. The Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel is a path for temporary residency allowing eligible individuals to work, study and reside in Canada. The expedited path for Ukrainian family members will allow for those with family sponsorship to apply for permanent residence.

in the country as of April 19, 2022. Ukraine’s 18-month designation will continue until October 19, 2023. Unfortunately, Ukrainian nationals currently outside the United States are not eligible for TPS under this designation, and they will not become eligible by relocating to the United States in the coming weeks. The individuals with TPS will be able to reside lawfully and will obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) while under the status. However, there are no options for medical or other available humanitarian aid at this time for the TPS seekers, and no other immediate provisions for uniting Ukrainians with family members in the USA (which is very different from what other countries have established). While I think that the U.S. government should do much more to help Ukrainians with refugee/asylum status and humanitarian aid, I believe that each of us can do something to help. We can help the international humanitarian organizations who are already in the county or at the border of Ukraine fiercely providing urgent aid with shelter, food, supplies and medical care. I support and trust the following organizations and I invite you to do the same. UNICEF- United Nations Children’s Fund - www.unicef.org UNHCR – UN Refuge Agency - https://help.unhcr.org

USA and the Immigration Policy for Ukrainians:

WCK - World Central Kitchen - www.wck.org

On March 3, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the designation of Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, due to the ongoing armed conflict and the extraordinary conditions in the country. The individuals eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the United States since April 11, 2022, and they must be physically present

ICRC - International Committee of The Red Cros- www.icrc.org I trust those organizations as they have a proved record of insuring aid to immigrants. Each one of us can make a difference, and all of us should support the Ukrainian people in such time of need.

EV REVOLUTION

90

BOY'S TOYS+ (TECHNOLOGY) BOY'S TOYS

W W

ith the incredibly fast evolution of technology and the way it is impacting the automobile industry, there is no doubt we are going through a ”Technological Revolution” unseen since the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century.

With Elon Musk, owner of 18% of Tesla, having set his corporate offices in Austin, you would expect that eventually Texas will become the leading state for electric vehicles. As a matter of fact, today Austin ranks fourth in the country when it comes to electric vehicle infrastructure. Last November Austin hosted Electrify Expo, North America’s largest electric vehicle festival at Circuit of the Americas, as the future in Austin and the rest of Texas is gearing toward electric, but Texas might not be ready to support the change just yet: “We haven’t seen an overall roadmap in the state’s government to get a sense of how to plan for demand and how to manage demand” - Bryan Howard, the state policy director for the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy said. Other than Austin, the rest of Texas is listed as number 27 out of 29 in the council’s state transportation electrification scorecard, meaning Texas -and Houston- ranks almost last in taking steps to prepare for more EVs. Amy Atchley, senior lead for EV Equity at Austin Energy says electric vehicles and infrastructure are at the top of Austin Energy’s priorities to reach its goal of net-zero carbon emission by 2040. Austin has a number of incentives for driving electric vehicles, but our capital city seems to be alone in this. “There is a huge amount of interest in Texas in electrification” - said Michael Schweizer, EV specialist at Mini. And there is no question that there are many advantages to switching to EV. Everything but the fun. If you ask me, I’ll stick to Lamborghini, McLaren, Aston Martin, or Porsche as they are today. How can you compare the thrill of driving a Texas gasoline-powered supercar with a dead-quiet electric? Can you imagine attending an EV race at Circuit of The Americas, where you will hear everything, but the cars? It will definitely take at least one or two generations to find the excitement in electric cars. Although we are seeing steadily rapid growth in electric vehicles moving around Houston, it is clear H-Town has miles to go before catching up with the new trend.

There is a New Sheriff in EV Town

F

The New Player in the Race to Dominate the World of EVs

ounded in 2007 as Atieva, a battery-pack maker, Lucid is now beginning the tough task of entering the world of electric vehicles. Adding to the monumental cost of the Air sedan is that the company chose to develop everything from the battery pack and electric motors to the headlights and power electronics. Of course, much of the effort also applies to other models in the works, such as the Air-based Gravity, an SUV coming in a year or so, and about a billion of the investment is sunk into a greenfield plant in southern Arizona. With a range of 520 miles with a single charge (both highway and city), 20-minute full charge (for up to 300 miles), 1,111 horsepower, and 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, the Lucid Air Dream Edition is Tesla’s nightmare. It also has the largest frunk space for an electric, with double deck compartments front and rear. Lucid Air Dream Edition comes in the form of two limited production models: Performance and Range. Dream Edition P is optimized for speed and acceleration, while Dream Edition R maximizes range. Both models have dual motors powering all four wheels, and a top speed of 168 mph. They also feature exclusive exterior and interior trim and every available upgrade. Choose from four exterior colors: Stellar White, Infinite Black, Zenith Red, or even Eureka Gold — a color exclusive to the Dream Edition. All exteriors are trimmed in bright platinum theme accents. The soft light and muted colors of daybreak on Santa Monica beach inspire the

Dream Edition’s exclusive interior palette and name: Santa Monica. A calming tone is set with Nappa full-grain leather in Graphite Gray and Ceramic with sophisticated Alcantara inserts, complemented by Silvered Eucalyptus wood and bright Platinum metal trim. Exclusive to the Lucid Air Dream Edition, these stunning 21-inch Aero Dream forged alloy wheels have an ultra-aerodynamic yet bold design. For those wanting to maximize their Dream Edition range, a 19-inch Aero Range wheel package is a no-cost option. Every Dream Edition includes the full range of available Lucid Air features including the Glass Canopy roof, Lucid’s exclusive DreamDrive driver assistance system and the available 21-speaker Surreal Sound system. If EV buyers are seeking engineering excellence, demand should be high, as the Air shoots to the front of the pack in terms of power, range, and charging speed. The company started putting Air sedans into driveways in late 2021. Initial models range from the $140,500 Grand Touring to the top-of-the-line $170,500 Dream, with horsepower figures from 800 to 1111 and EPA range from 451 to 520 miles. But the lineup will soon expand downward. All the vehicles will be propelled by one or two of Lucid’s amazingly compact electric-motor assemblies. They’re powered via battery modules in 300-cell groupings at a heady 900 volts. The Air Dream Performance pack holds 118.0 kilowatt-hours. LUXCIOR.com

Rolls-Royce Spectre A 122-Year-Old Prophecy

TO THE MOST LUXURIOUS EV IN THE WORLD

R

olls-Royce Motor Cars made an historical announcement that it would launch its most important product since 4th May 1904, when the brand’s founders Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce agreed that they would create “the best car in the world”. The Rolls-Royce Spectre.

By Marcelo Stefano

94

While Rolls-Royce has built a reputation for creating what are regularly described as “the best cars in the world” using internal combustion engines, the idea of electrification is something that is familiar to the brand. Henry Royce began life as an electrical engineer and dedicated much of his life to creating internal combustion engines that simulated the characteristics of an electric car – silent running, instant torque, and the sensation of one endless gear. Yet, the connection with the brand’s founders is far deeper. When Charles Rolls drove a 1900 electric car named the Columbia, he made a prophecy: “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration. They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged”. Spectre is the fulfilment of this prophecy. In September 2021, Charles Rolls’ prophecy and Torsten Müller-Ötvös’ promise led to an historical moment. Rolls-Royce confirmed that it had commenced testing of the first all-electric Rolls-Royce in history, Spectre. This extraordinary undertaking would be the most demanding testing program ever conceived by Rolls-Royce and would span 1.5 million miles, simulating more than 400 years of use for a Rolls-Royce, on average.

Spectre is the most connected Rolls-Royce ever and each component within it is more intelligent than in any previous Rolls-Royce. It features 141,200 sender-receiver relations and has more than 1,000 functions with more than 25,000 sub functions. By comparison, Phantom has 51,000 sender-receiver relations, 456 functions and 647 sub functions. A new Rolls-Royce motor car always begins its life in winter. Temperatures at the Bespoke facility used by the brand, located in Arjeplog, Sweden, just 34 miles from the arctic circle, drop to -14 degrees and are further cooled to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. With the winter testing phase completed, Spectre will continue its global testing program. The Electric Super Coupé still has to complete nearly 1.25 million miles before the brand’s engineers will consider this undertaking complete prior to first customer deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2023.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

WALK

FOR WEIGHT LOSS Want to step it up a notch? Start with this walking schedule and keep building as you get more fit. Walking is a gentle, low-impact cardio exercise that can ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. It’s safe and simple. And regular brisk walking can provide many of the benefits of more vigorous exercises, such as jogging.

Try this 10-week walking schedule Not sure how to get started? This 10-week walking schedule can put you on the path to better fitness and health. Before starting this program, check with your doctor.

Warm up. Spend five to 10 minutes walking slowly — or walk in place — to reduce your risk of injury.

*Doesn’t include warm-up and cool-down time. Once you get started, follow these tips to prevent pain and injuries: Start slow and easy. Unless you're a seasoned fitness walker, follow our schedule to give yourself several weeks to work up to 30 minutes or more five days a week.

106

Dress appropriately. Wear comfortable walking shoes that fit well, along with loose-fitting clothing and layers to adjust to changes in temperature.

Stretch. After warming up, stretch your muscles for about five minutes before walking. Don't stretch unless you've warmed up first. Maintain good posture. Hold your head high, swing your arms naturally and gently tighten your stomach muscles. Assess your intensity. If you're so out of breath that you can’t carry on a conversation, you're probably walking too fast. Track your progress. Track how many steps or miles you walk and how long it takes — a pedometer is a great tool. Make walking fun. Plan several different routes for variety. Listen to your favorite music. Invite friends or family to join you. Cool it. After walking, cool down for five to 10 minutes. Walk slower than you were. Stretch your calf muscles, quadriceps (upper thighs), hamstrings and back. This after-workout stretch allows your heart rate and muscles to return to normal. The most important part of any exercise plan is making sure you stick with it. To stay motivated, be patient and flexible. If you don't meet your daily goal, do the best you can, and get back to your regular walking routine the next day. Remember how good it feels after you've had a refreshing walk. Plan several different routes for variety, and make walking a social event — invite friends or family to join you. Once you take that first step, you'll be on your way to an important destination — better health.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Improved BRAIN HEALTH There's good evidence that what you eat can make a difference in your risk of cognitive decline and your overall brain health Courtesy of Mayo Clinic

HERE'S WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT: The research is in: Eating certain foods (and avoiding others) has been shown to slow brain aging by 7.5 years, and lessen the chances of developing Alzheimer's disease. This isn't some trendy diet of the moment. Born as a hybrid of two existing eating styles with decades of research at their backs — the DASH diet and Mediterranean diet — university researchers developed the MIND diet to emphasize foods that impact brain health.

HERE'S WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE: Load up on vegetables Just like Mom always told you: Eat your vegetables. But unique to the MIND diet, researchers found that green leafy ones like kale, collards, spinach or lettuce were specifically shown to lower the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Greens are packed with nutrients linked to better brain health like folate, vitamin E, carotenoids and flavonoids. And one serving a day has been shown to slow brain aging.

108

To max out your veggie score, aim to eat at least six servings a week of greens. Then round it out with at least one serving of other vegetables a day.

Make berries your sweet treat Nothing against the apple a day, but when scientists reviewed the research on diet and brain health, one type of fruit soared above the rest: berries. In a 20-year study of over 16,000 older adults, those who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had the slowest rates of cognitive decline. Researchers credit the high levels of flavonoids in berries with the benefit. Treat yourself to two or more berry servings a week for peak brain health.

Snack on nuts (forget the packaged stuff) Nuts may be high in calories and fat, but they're packed with fat-soluble vitamin E, known for its brain-protective qualities. Grab a handful at least five times a week instead of processed snacks like chips or pastries. Check the list of ingredients and opt for the dry-roasted or raw, unsalted kind without extra sodium, sweeteners or oils. (Hint: No-stir peanut butters have stuff added.)

Cook with (mostly) olive oil Another Mediterranean diet staple that has a home in the MIND diet is olive oil. Researchers recommend using it as your primary cooking oil, and avoiding butter and margarine. New to olive oil? Look for "extra virgin" olive oil (skip anything labeled "light") and choose a bottle that's opaque or dark glass since light causes it to go bad faster.

Embrace meat-free meals Brain-healthy eating encourages consuming meat sparingly (red meat makes an appearance fewer than four times a week in the ideal MIND diet). Beans, lentils and soybeans, which pack protein and fiber, make

a worthy substitute. They'll keep you full and are rich in B vitamins, which are important for brain health. In one study analyzing the diets of older adults, those who had the lowest intakes of legumes had greater cognitive decline than those who ate more.

Have fish once a week Constantly forgetting the name of that person you just met? Adults age 65 and older who ate fish once a week or more scored better on memory tests and tricky number games than those who had seafood less often. But if fish isn't your favorite, there's good news: MIND diet researchers couldn't find proof that having it more than once a week added extra benefits for the brain.

And it doesn’t necessarily have to be the beaches of Maldives, Monaco, Fiji, Vietnam or Bahamas. Right here at home we have some of the most beautiful and engaging coastline escapades. Some as close and fun as Dentin, Florida, some as luxurious and glamurous as Newport Beach or Laguna Beach in Southern California. NOT SO CLOSE

Maui

Even if you have no idea what to do on Maui Island, you probably already know it has some of the most beautiful beaches. In fact, it is often said that the beaches are one of the reasons why so many vacationers choose Maui for a romantic or a family island getaway. You can enjoy a wide number of exciting yet romantic trips along the beach or even in the water, as well as a bit of basking on the shoreline. Guided boat tours, snorkeling, and scuba diving are also available along the coast. Whether you’re in the sea, above it, or along the shoreline, the ocean waves will leave a strong impression on your memory, helping you remember your island getaway for a very long time.

See Maui from above While it’s more than possible to spend your entire stay on the beach, you might want something more. Don’t waste too much time wondering what to do on Maui away from the beach: just go see this beautiful island from the sky! Numerous Maui helicopter tours take off every day to let you experience the island from a whole new perspective. This is one of the best ways to make the most of your getaway in Maui and it’s highly unlikely you will forget it anytime soon!

Relax in a Maui luxury resort While it’s important to look ahead for events and sights you can check out during your island escapade, it’s also important to book amazing accommodation in Maui. Where you choose to stay on Maui can bring a whole different set of enjoyable things to experience. That is why many choose a luxury hotel or a resort. Most of them come with swimming pools, fitness centers, saunas, hot tubs, beauty salons, restaurants, and golf courses.

Or stay in a private Maui villa on your romantic island getaway You may also enjoy spending your island vacation in a spacious Maui villa, in a beautiful and romantic atmosphere. Although you may not have access to as many on-site amenities and facilities as you would have while in a luxury resort, you will find that many Maui villas are still absolutely stunning. In reality, depending on the villa you choose to rent, you may have access to a swimming pool, a sauna, or a hot tub. You can quickly customize your quest to make sure that you get what you want.

SOMEWHAT CLOSE

Newport Beach California

This is probably my favorite because it has so much to offer in addition to the beach. Beyond the Southern California sun, sand, and surf, here you will enjoy the sophisticated charm of Newport Beach. A place so intoxicating, one taste of the perfect life will keep you coming back for more. From sunset cruises to surf lessons, wine tastings to harbor-front promenades, this beautiful destination offers more things to do and more ways to spend your stay. Home of the largest recreational harbor on the west coast, there are ten miles of extraordinary fishing, swimming, surfing, and aquatic sports activities. Newport Beach is known not only for its magnificent Pacific Coast Highway coastline views passing by from Long Beach through Dana Point, but also for its wealth and extravagant lifestyle. Here you will find some of the most expensive yachts and cars in the country. NB also offers extraordinary dining, entertainment, and shopping. And of course a very active nightlife. There are too many incredible opportunities here to list.

Driving south of Newport Beach you will enjoy a spectacular coastline with vibrant cities like Corona del Mar, Crystal Cove, Laguna Beach, Capistrano, and Dana Point. Exclusive Fashion Island Mall sits in the heart of Newport Beach, just minutes away from the beach, while South Coast Plaza, the 4th largest mall in the country, hosting just about every possible ultra-luxury brand, is 20 minutes away. If you have the time, you can drive north about an hour to Los Ángeles to visit some iconic destinations like Santa Monica Beach at the very west end of I-10, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills, to name a few. Disneyland is just 35 minutes north. Newport Beach on the Pacific Coast is definitely a jewel top escapade, with John Wayne Airport minutes away and Los Angeles International Airport (better known as LAX) about an hour north.

Clearwater Beach

Laid-back Clearwater Beach, Florida, is known for its namesake stretch of soft, white sand, which draws visitors year-round for jet-skiing, parasailing, and stand-up paddleboarding in its calm waters. Cyclists and rollerbladers glide along a winding beachfront promenade lined with casual seafood restaurants and cafes. Families delight with a visit to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where singles love the nightlife found within walking distance of the best hotels Florida offers. Come sunset, Pier 60 hosts a nightly festival with street performers and craft vendors. There are a number of luxury hotels and fine dining to make your stay as lavish as you may expect. Whether you want to ride the waves with the dolphins or relax on the beach, Clearwater Beach has just the activities for you.

And due to its plentiful and always hungry underwater population, Destin is widely known as the “world’s luckiest fishing village.” This family beach town, also known as “Emerald Bay” (part of the Emeral Coast 24-mile stretch of white-sand beaches covering areas like Destin, Okaloosa Island, and Fort Walton) for its brilliant green-colored waters from the distance, is known for its plentiful fishing, snorkeling, challenging golf courses, mouth-watering seafood restaurants, its incredible Gulf views, and warm, crystal-clear waters. Destin offers a wide variety of activities including parasailing, watersports, dolphin and shark cruises, aquariums, theme parks, and much, much more.
