WTF “He who fear death dies only once. [Giovanni Falcone, Sicilian Magistrate, 1939-1992]
STARTING POINT. To answer the question of creating a Brief by myself, I started to be curios, uncomfortable, dazzling and exploring all the possibilities. I actually questioning myself on what I like and what I don’t, what makes me happy and what makes me sad, what I need and what I don’t. What is my nationality, my origins and actually where I come from. On this last point I reflected more creating my Brief.
Starting Point.
Briefing the project and Mapping my mind.
Starting Point.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM BRIEF: As a designer, it is important to be aware and explore the connections between what you want to create, which kind of target you want to engage with and what kind of message you want to communicate. Gathering information, observation, research, reflection and critical approach are always fundamental steps that you need to take in consideration. However, there is another aspect that actually need more attention representing the most striking future of your project and it is about studying the reactions that people have related to your outcome. This happens especially when you want to create something that could envolve people personally, by their simple experience. Mafia and Corruption are everywhere and are the matter, you can see it or you cannot. You need to analyze critically the topic, it could be in general or in particular, choosing one aspect of the problem, exploring the feelings of people concern the problem. CRITICAL REFLECTION: How design, art, illustration, communication can help address the problem of Mafia and Corruption? How can we inform people about that? Essentially, use your power and imagination as a designer trying to capture the attention of your target audience.
TIPS:
?
- Remember always to select accurately your Target Audience. - Who do you want to talk with? - Who do you want to inform? - Why? - Where? - What do you want to communicate? Supporting always your idea by a deepened research validating your choices in a critical way.
PRIMARY RESEARCH. TAKING PICTURES. One whole day on my favourite beach, where all my dreams and pains had origins. Loved and hated land, that made me who I am today. Taking pictures, observing it from another point of view, mine.
To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything. [Goethe]
Primary Research.
Describing my land in detail.
Sicily is a colorful land: the orange of the sunset and citrus, the blue of the sky that reflects on the sea pure and transparent, the yellow of the sun which illuminate and warm up my land.
A little excursus on Messina, where I come from.
PRIMARY RESEARCH. MAKING COLLAGES. Wanting to develop the collage technique which I employed during the first module, I tried to make mood boards with the collage technique, using them as a research.
Primary Research.
A different approach to do research.
First Process. COLLAGES PROCESS. I collected all the things which inspired me: images, newspapers, magazines, colours cards, tapes, different materials as tissue papers and fruits. Everything that could represents or give me the feeling of Sicily. After that, I decided to put all together making collages and trying to express my feelings.
Secondary Research.
Explaining the sources of my contents.

PRIMARY RESEARCH/CONCEPT. In the middle of my research and brainstorming, I wonder something really interesting which became the key-point of the project even if at that time was very confused and not defined. The idea came out actually from these “paper for citrus fruit that I found really perfect for my idea and to send a proper message, discovering a whole collection. Using papers as a tool of communication.

The history of Sicilian papers oranges.
History & Culture. SICILIAN PAPERS ORANGES. In the early ’900 it was very common for the various farmers or merchants take into account this kind of paper which is a kind of “tissue paper” to create their name doing a proper marketing operation. They used to put some picture (whatever) and some reminds of citrus (colours, shape or simply the same citrus) and the name of the company making their own brand. This process is very common even nowadays, especially for one kind of orange which are named “Tarocchi Oranges”.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT. I have always been fascinated by human figures as it can be seen by the pictures that I chose on my research.
Concept.
Creating the Idea.
CURIOSITY ON HUMAN FIGURES. INSPIRATION. Studying the human body and their expressions makes me feel active, empathic, real. All of that are fundamentals futures if you want to transmit your thought to your interlocutor/target audience. Basically, is all about finding your interest/passion on everything you want to communicate, HOW you want to communicate. Just in this way you can catch the right people’s attention.

CURIOSITY ON HUMAN FIGURES. INSPIRATION/NOTES. Taking notes about my inspiration composing a collage which synthetize the idea. Notes and thoughts the connections Sicily and mafia, quotes from the most important people that died to faith this cancer of our society.

SKETCHING & DRAWING. In these sketches, I wanted to depict the feeling of discomfort that humans have in our Society. Mafia and Corruption represent one of the main reason of our actual discomfort. Human in trap in exchange of a favour or a help. A help that before or later will cost the highest price.
Sketching & Drawing.
The essence of freedom.
THE DESPERATE CRY OF THE MOTHER. Taking the inspiration from one of my favourite artist, Matisse, I started to sketch human figures. Initially, I sketched women’s body, thinking about how mothers feel the fear for their sons, when they start to lose their mind taking part to gangs, close circles and becoming after real and proper gangster. So, I wanted to depict the moment of the desperate cray of the mothers, their scream which often go towards the dyed son.
HOW HUMANS ACTUALLY FEEL. I imagined an empty space that I drew for purpose as a circle, reminds me the citrus shape, starting questioning myself as a human being. - What kind of position we fill in a box? - Are we comfortable or not? - Are we lost? - Maybe we feel narrowed?
Meanwhile I could visualize this concept comparing to reality. - What kind of position we fill in the world? - What is our place? Six different positions and portions of human body which reflect HOW the human condition is suffering and HOW is in prison. Prisoners of themselves fear on one side but with the willingness to want to be free. Somehow, they fall down or they plummet, somehow, they scream, kick or punch reclaiming their freedom and consciousness.
I took into account oranges and lemons as a symbol of Sicily wanting make a connection between the idea of the packaging and a product of everyday use to send my subliminal message. Of course, if is about Sicily has to be food and I just thought that oranges would work perfectly extending after the idea to Citrus in general.
EXPERIMENTATIONS. SCREEN PRINTING. The screen printing technique was the first attempt to make the orange papers. Wanting recreate the sensations of old, veiled and transparent at the same time, I went around looking for a special material. Finding a tissue paper, the unique paper able to give me this kind of feelings. Because of the thickness, actually inconsistent, it was very difficult find the right way to print on it.
Experimentations.
Trying different techniques.
Second process. First attempt. SCREEN PRINTING PROCESS. At first glance, even with the recommendations of the tutor and the colleagues, I was interested to take in consideration the possibility to do something with the collages that I have already done. The choice was the SUM-UP collage, to do the first attempt. I really enjoy the screen printing process, first of all because was new for me and second because the result was quite good, except for some contrast colours that I tried. It took me one whole day to do it making more than 10 papers leaving them drying for another one.
EVALUATIONS. After I evaluated all the work I have done so far, I decided to experiment the screen printing technique with the tissue paper, using one of my collages, actually the last one which works as a sum up of the idea. As can be seen, this first attempt was quite good except for some colours or some of the contrasts that I wanted to try to see the differences but it was impossible put words. In addition to that, I honestly didn’t like the idea to be vague, too abstract. So, I thought to create something stronger where the message was very visible and cannot be misunderstood or in the worst case, the scenario missed.
IDEA DEVELOPMENT. THE CRITICAL DESIGN MEANING. At this point I wanted to create something with what I have already done with my sketches finding out how to transfigure the intrinsic meaning that these sketches had for me.
Critical Design.
The side that I am interested in.
More Research. THE CRITICAL DESIGN MEANING. Came back to the central idea I do more research to find out the WAY TO DO IT, wanting find my SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE. I accosted my thought to artist that nowadays do critical design as Dunne & Raby and Metahaven.
(Dunneandraby.co.uk, 2018) “What happens when you decouple design from the marketplace, when rather than making technology sexy, easy to use and more consumable, designers use the language of design to pose questions, entertain, and provoke — to transport our imaginations into parallel but possible worlds? We are concerned not only with the expressive, functional and communicative possibilities of new technologies but also with the social, cultural and ethical consequences of living within an increasingly technologically mediated society. The project consists of a number of design proposals presented through models, photographic scenarios, videos and 3D texts. It is absolutely not about prediction, but asking what if..., speculating, imagining, and even dreaming, to create and facilitate reflection on the kind of technologically mediated world we wish to live in. Ideally, one that reflects the complex, troubled people we are, rather than the easily satisfied consumers and users we are supposed to be”. (Dunneandraby.co.uk, 2018) Dunne & Raby. Critical Design.
Finding my own way.
GRAPHIC APPROACH. MAKING SYMBOL. Studying the human body and them expressions make me feel alive, active, empathic, real. All of that are fundamentals futures if you want to transmit your thought to your interlocutor/target audience. Basically, is all about finding your interest/ passion on everything you want to communicate, HOW you want to communicate. Just in this way you can catch the right people’s attention.
Critical Design.
Looking for a subliminal message.
Disturbing & Provoking. THE SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE. Studying different possibilities to send a message combining my thoughts in a successful formula in terms of font and logo brand.
Graphic Development.
Pattern idea.
Disturbing & Provoking. 2 DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS. The first version is with portions of Octopus, which, as we saw in my previous research, is a symbol of mafia. The second version is just without the Octopus elements resulting more harmonious with colours and shapes. In both of the cases, I preferred to put a black background to give more weight to the treated argument.
Disturbing & Provoking. THE FINAL SOLUTION. The first version is with portions of Octopus, which, as we saw in my previous research, is a symbol of mafia. The second version is just without the Octopus elements resulting more harmonious with colours and shapes. In both of the cases, I preferred to put a black background to give more weight to the argument treated.

EXPERIMENTATIONS. NEWSPAPERS + OIL PROCESS. It was not easy at all the process that I had to find out to make the oranges paper after I tried to do on screen printing. First of all, I tried to print out with the laser jet printing because of the difficulty of the drawing, the other technique would require so much time and the result was not guaranteed. The paper was too thin for the printer, I found out to put in the machine attaching an A4, in this way maybe would be work. The expectations were high but the result inconsistent because the machine took all the paper broken it. At this point, it was just another failed attempt.
Second attempt.
Finding the right way to print out.
Second attempt. NEWSPAPERS+OIL. Thinking and over thinking for days, I finally found out to change the tissue paper with a newspaper. I printed with a normal laser jet and after I spread over my A4, vegetable oil, in detail sunflower oil, appositely chose because from the bottle was the clear one.
Third Process. PAPERS PROCESS. After the collage process, the screen printing process, I actually describing the third process that I used during this major project which is the papers process. Finally, I could have a great result of all the work I have done. I am quite satisfied of the pattern that I created, it was almost how I always imagined. It responds perfectly to my necessity, in terms of subliminal message, brand name, paper, drawing. I firmly believe is simple, clear and most important is a different way to catch the attention of my interlocutor.
Fourth Process. PACKAGING PROCESS. Making the packaging for my citrus was the most exciting part. Find out how to draw the bag, the material to use, the size, how to print it, how to close it, how to wrap the oranges, make the little stickers.
Final outcome. MY PACKAGING. A real bag for citrus, a product of everyday use, to send my message and educate people to know and to understand the topic which even nowadays results confused and just object of stereotypes. Do Graphic Design with a purpose to inform.
Fourth Process. PLACING MY PACKAGING. In view of the fact that is a real packaging, I thought to place it at the supermarket. As can be seen, there is not a big difference with the other packaging and this will provoke the customer. A little book is attached to explain the concept and answer to the most curious. s
LITTLE BOOK CONTENTS. As I already mentioned, a little book to attach on the packaging was created with a purpose to explain all the contents and symbol that I created. It contains the explanation of the message.
WTF SYMBOLS MEANING Women’s leg, men’s hand, bodies and heads on one side trapped in an orange... on the other side the strong willingness to want to go out and be free. This is to represent how Humans are totally trapped in the System. Mafia, Corruption and Omertà are the major reasons of our status quo, of our condition.
“Talk about Mafia, talk on the radio, on TV, on the newspapers. But talk!” [Paolo Borsellino, Sicilian Magistrate, 1940 - 1992]
People pushed down and obliged to do something that actually they don’t want to do as dealing with drugs, recicled money, political corruption and in the worst of the case, shooting and killing where often innocents are the victims.
“He who fear death dies only once.” [Giovanni Falcone, Sicilian Magistrate, 1939 - 1992]
Victims of our System, victims of ourselves for missed choices in exhange of special favours, becoming the protaganist of tales full of violence and misfortune.
Killed by mafia because he had the courage to report real facts and evidence of the most complex connections. [Mario Francese, Sicilian Journalist, 1925 - 1979]
People pushed down and obliged to do something that actually they don’t want to do. Loosing their head which becomes the fulcrom of an orange in this case, the head of Mafia in the reality. Heads which later or soon will represent the hour to die.
“The Mafia kill, the silence even.” [Giuseppino Impastato, Sicilian business owner, 1948 - 1978]
Is important say that in all those people there is always the willingness to say NO, to fight, to kick off this disorder as a ball.
“If everyone acting like I do, the extorsionist are destroyed.” [Libero Grassi, Sicilian business owner, 1924 - 1991]
But most of the time the attempt results negative, falling the person in the dephts of darkness.
“There are thinghs to do not because of the courage but to keep going observing your children and their children...” [Generale dalla Chiesa, Sicilian business owner, 1920 - 1982]

I want to send a POSITIVE MESSAGE to all people coming in London to study, to make an effort or a challenge in their life, people who looking for a job, for a freedom o for love, people who desire to explore their alter ego, to find themselves...

Marketing Strategy Campaign adopted. From negative to positive message.
Inspiration. Reconnecting broken pieces.
This Heart-breaking collage was the main inspiration for the campaign idea, especially in terms of Graphic Style. In fact, I created the Logo of the campaign with this “heart-shape which remember somehow a kind of map. A map of London, a map of our heart. Broken pieces that need to be reconnected. A mix of pictures that illustrate victims on one side and lights, colours and life on the other side, as a sum up of the main idea.

Sketching Logo-faces. MY IDEA OF DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES. To educate to express better the concept of the “value of the diversity”, I started to sketch faces with different characteristics and I developed then in graphic symbol as logo faces to give an entity to every nationality but in the same way.
WE ARE UNITED FOR OUR DIFFERENCES.
Concept.
Idea Campaign.
Concept Campaign MIND LOVE: BAD EVENTS
GOOD EVENTS = VIBES - HOPE - PEACE =
Using the existing and famous language of the tube “MIND THE GAP”, I decided to make a memorable statement for this campaign. As we know MIND has a double accepted meaning. It means to pay Attention, to be Careful, a sign of Warning on one hand; on the other hand, it means Take care of something/someone, Remember, Take into account, Bearing, Consider. I chose this word, first of all, because is short, powerful and easy to remember as an association, as it is usually required for a good campaign to catch the attention in a few seconds of your Target audience. Second of all, because I need to explain in one word the dualism that I created in my research about the good and the bad, which actually is the center of all idea. In addition to that, the association with the word LOVE sounds perfect. With MIND LOVE, MIND LONDON, I want to say to people to remember the word Love as it is. In a positive way, even if we live in an empty world, dictated by rules that we don’t have decided but unfortunately the power has. Because all we need is Love, the only power that opens all the doors!

Concept.
Development of the Concept.
Sketching Inspirations. MY IDEA OF LOVE. After months of primary and secondary research, I was so inspired that I started to sketch and see how human figures would have been able to match with my thought of peace and love. The result was so inspiring that I decided to turn into a definitive work. Of course, improving it and trying to tell a story to my interlocutors, key of the project.
Idea Development.
DRAWING THE MAIN IDEA. Three different sketches for three different billboards. Showing different ways to love, to send a positive message.

Message.
The Value of the Diversity.
Travelling and experience are the key for a global vision, the melting - pot is a fundamental concept that express the idea in human being. The necessity to discover, to compare yourself with other cultures, with other habits, make us stronger and open minded. This is the main reason which inspire human to the “value of diversity developing the community with consciousness.
Final Outcome. Cleaning the lines and putting my story as a complement of the drawing was actually successful, giving to it the right movement. In addition to that I played with pastel colours conferring calm and serenity, in lines with the principles of the campaign.

MIND LOVE. MIND LONDON. The aim is to engage with the community of Londoners and with who wants to become a Londoner creating a pure interaction. Bringing a bit of peace and love, positive thinking, friendship, support... in all kind of ways people can communicate that, because there are no restrictions to the love! I even decided to create an integrated campaign with the Instagram page, studying again, the social behavior of people and how they react “on social for social.
IS NOT JUST ABOUT COLOURS, IS ALSO ABOUT CONTENTS. FOLLOW THE STORY, FINDING THE DIFFERENCES. Five different billboards in five different screens will make people curious to find out what is the story about. The first four will tell you a story... the last one will sum-up the idea.

WHAT THE GDCP HAS DONE FOR
ME
Target Audience.
The importance of our interlocutors.
Who is my audience?
MAKING A CONVERSATION WITH MY INTERLOCUTORS IS FOUNDAMENTAL.
“I made an epic effort some years ago when I tried to explain my job to my mother. With my book, I intended to explain design to the most difficult interlocutor each time you try and make serious conversation, with mothers the reaction is often a smile and an offer to prepare something to eat”. Readable. (2018). The design explained to my mother: Fabio Novembre at TEDxLecce. [online] Available at: http://www.allreadable.com/1d39N0z [Accessed 28 Feb. 2018]. Or I can personally add... <<Martina you are totally crazy, I can’t understand you!>>. I mentioned this sentence because it contains the essence of HOW is important our interlocutor.

Personal Manifesto.
I want to make people know the weight of things.
Who do I want to design/ make work for? Why?
MY PERSONAL MANIFESTO. DUALISM.
As a creative practitioner, I define my practice very impulsive on one side and very reflective on the other side, actually as I am, perfectly divided in two halves. Impulsive because as my personal Manifesto says: “I WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE KNOW THE WEIGHT OF THINGS” which corresponds to an action, to keep myself productive. Reflective because I need to do that somehow and I can discover that only by the time, the research and the experimentation. All of that work wants always reflection and need to be treat in a specific way.
I NEED TO MA KE PEOPLE KNOW THE WEIGHT OF THINGS
VISUALLY/MENTALLY
EMOTIONALLY
I WANT TO BRING B UTTERFLIES IN YOUR STOMACH
MANIFESTO
Colours Table Emotions.
COLOUR IS IMPORTANT AS A TRANSFIGURATION.
For instance, I am using black and red when I want to catch from people big attention as a sign of warning, capture “social attention talking about the disorders of our Society. Or I can just use a full red as a color of love. Violet is the color of mystery and veil which hiding secrets and green represents for me hope, serenity, calm. So, I am actually transfiguring everything I have got in my mind and the specific message that I want to send to my interlocutors, mapping my idea which is always supported by a consistent research because I want to be sure of what it is and especially of what I am doing. If you are not sure of what you are doing, then you will probably never be understood by people. The more research you do to support your idea, the stronger will be the thought; consequently, the target audience that you will potentially achieve. Be direct is the key.

The meaning.
WHAT GRAPHIC DESIGN MEANS FOR ME.
Essentially, Graphic design means for me have an opportunity to talk with people, to engage with, to make them know, to i nform them and in a way, I can say an opportunity to teach them. What??
PEOPLE WAKE-UP.
A lesson of life developing confidence and consciousness in this world totally embarrassed and predicted, where nothing is anymore original and where humans are just humans-objects and themselves prisoners. How??
PROCESS. I usually like simplify the reality and as I already
mentioned, I like translate the problem to catch the right attention. As the Futurist Manifesto says in his propaganda, [art a part of cult(ure). (2018). Giacomo Balla. Manifesto del Vestito antineutrale, 1914 - art a part of cult(ure). [online] Available at: https://www.artapartofculture.net/2013/09/15/arte-e-moda-1-contaminazioni-crossover-e-storia-di-una-relazione-non-sempre-dangerous/giacomo-balla-manifesto-del-vestito-antineutrale-1914/ [Accessed 28 Feb. 2018]. “We futurist people, want to suppress all kind of pretty shades, or diplomatic patterns as stripes or points or any static line. We want to free our race from every neutrality, from worried indecision, pessimism and negativity, from inertia.

What I want to create?
IMPACT/DISTURBING.
I want to make people do something, interact, taking an action, knowing, provoking, feeling emotions and encourage them to raise awareness in our Society. Only in this way we can change our approach and solve our disorders. Using education and culture as a tool of empowerment, of communication.

WHAT THE GDCP HAS DONE FOR
ME
With the GDCP I actually discovered another world, the world of how you can tell a story with graphics, illustrations, drawings, colours, materials. Supporting always everything with a deeper research, where you can grow your knowledges and imagination comparing your idea with the idea of other people. This course gives me the opportunity to learn and experiment different approaches and techniques from the research, the development of the concept until the printing that actually is a very important stage that I never considerate before as I did now. I have learnt how to explore all the possibilities and how to go beyond my comfort zone being so much confident than before, almost ready to deal with the Master of the next year.
Final considerations.
BE VISCERAL. I WANT TO BRING [ANY KIND OF] BUTTERFLIES IN THE STOMACH.
I discovered the willingness to give IMPACT/ DISTURBING. Of course, sometimes you need to be gentle, give them hope and confidence, make them falling in love and dreaming. Literally, bring them ANY KIND OF butterflies in their stomach. It all depends of what you need to communicate but stimulating and provoking are the key to do a good communication. By the way, people are the crossroads of my thoughts.
