ver more about Migration… Victoria & Albert Museum’s Archive Drawing collection

COLLETION BENVENISTE Geoff Mac Ewans - Carthage, 2002.

This project was born in a collaboration with STORY BOX COLLECTIVE WILTON’S which aim to reevaluate the importance of archives found by people not interesting and boring in order to create new insights, shaping new stories. The visit to the archive I chose discovering more about an actual topic: Migration.

From the inspiration that I got thanks to the artist I took into consideartion, I started to draw my mediterranean landscapes.

Flowers, plants, vulcanos, marmades, fishes, struggling people... My view of the mediterranean places. Beautiful lands abandoned.

I used pencil to draw and acrylic to colour it because I wanted give the feeling of colour blocks as the artist do.

I tried to experiment more making a collage with tracing paper printed and not, mixing up. The aim was creating a piece with different techniques all together as B/W, Colours, sketch, photocopy, pictures taking by me.

After the experimentations with the landscape, I thought about a room, a messy room...

like the one we have when we live outside of our home country.

This was the final image I prepared to make my cushion. A collage with a mix of my own pictures, s

sketchline and block colours in transparency where I used the color palette of the artist that inspired me.

FINAL OUTCOME

“Beautiful Nostalgia” – Cushion Homesickness is sad and real and we need to care about it. Our room in our travel bag, always with us which reminds good memories and the sensation to always being at home. Tiredness, fatigue, exhaustion, mental and physical sacrifices and all the things can involve making this choice. I see “Beautiful Nostalgia” as a little contribution to a problem that exist, a tool which can be used as a component of a “surviving kit” in this demanding and empty world.

S C R A T C H -

During my visit I was inspired by Elsa Schiaperelli, Italian fashion designer of 1920. She is famous for they way she mixed art and fashion creating unique pieces and introducing the pink colour in the fashion style. I took into account the pink gloves.

FINAL OUTCOME

“Artificial Scratch” – Gloves Inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli and her particular view of the Fashion style, I made this vintage pair of gloves which are connected to the willingness to survive in this world, protecting ourselves. Gloves as hats, scarves, sunglasses are specific accessories designed to protect us from cold, sun, windy… Another object to put in our “surviving kit” which give more the idea of protection, especially having applied this kind of studs which represent for me the scratch that we need to have in our life. So Scratch gloves as an allegory of life.

LONDON TEXTILE FAIR BRANDING IDENTITY PROPOSAL

CRITICAL REFLECTIONS - WHAT CAN I IMPROVE?

1. TYPOGRAPHY - lack of distinction and individuality - no personality it could be applied to any industry or sector 2. STRAPLINE - should this be built upon? - should be a variety of straplines that convey the strenght of the Fair?

3. IMAGERY - is this reflective of the Fair? - is it contemporary?

4. COLOURS I would recommend to follow more trends and styles. - BLACK & WHITE - RED/YELLOW FLUO

MOOD COLLAGE

Sketching Inspirations. MY IDEA OF EMPATHY. To design a powerful book cover, it means first of all, understand properly the story and the point of view of the author. In this way you are able to catch the essence and the details that can make your cover special. Wonder is a story of a young boy, with a deformed face and a slander body. He cover himself from people that continuously hurting him for his aspect. The audience is for children and adults, a life lesson that everyone should learn. I started reading the book, so I could identify what I was looking for.

This artist and in particular the for me in order to think and re

e cover of this book were very inspirational ealise what I had in my mind.

Sketching & cut out Inspirations.

I started to sketch the first idea, a puppet which is for children a symbol of friendship but broke, to evidence the “scars of the boy.

After that, I thought that the technique of cut out and collage could be perfect and much more catchy than a simple illustration, especially when the main target is children. They always love to play with colours and crafts.

I changed colours wanting to be less strong and I came up with this experiment adding even a digital line. Even if more calibrated in terms of colours, the result was again too strong and a bit scary for children. THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER My name is August. I won’t describe what I look like. I decided to be kind and sweet taking considering other elements such as the dog that play an important part.

Not satisfied I started to make more and more compositions, sketches and ideas unti I found my main inspiration.

The hood, as protection and to cover ourselves. He always used to cover himself with the helmet space or other stuffs but in terms of idea, in an “helmet” or an “abstract world where he hiding himself” there was something missing. I guess it would be too expected.

I thought the hood would be much more interesting not just to represent the concept but even the kindness which is actually the key-argument. With that idea, I tryed several different combinations of shapes and colours, improving the collage technique.

Terror attacks, bombs found in the metro stations, horrible fires, so much dismay and chaos between Londoners. MOOD COLLAGE N.1

Actions of solidarity and friendship, colours, nuns, symbols of London like the metro station full of people, buses and doors, all of that was a big inspiration for my message. MOOD COLLAGE N.2

Every single picture inspired me to create the movement and dynamism that I wanted to confer on my project as a city like London is.

Sketching Inspirations. MY IDEA OF LOVE. After months of primary and secondary research, I was so inspired that I started to sketch and see how human figures would have been able to match with my thought of peace and love. The result was so inspiring that I decided to turn into a definitive work. Of course, improving it and trying to tell a story to my interlocutors, the key to the project.

Responding to the question -WHY I WANT TO DEVELOP A BETTER COMMUNITYthe song has played a key role inspiring me constantly positive vibes. It helped me to ďŹ nd out what would be been the message that I would like to communicate to people. It reects perfectly, the campaign strategy from a Negative to a Positive message that I actually adopted supporting even more the main idea.

MIND LOVE. MIND LONDON. The aim is to engage with the community of Londoners and with who wants to become a Londoner creating a pure interaction. Bringing a bit of peace and love, positive thinking, friendship, support... in all kinds of ways people can communicate that because there are no restrictions on the love. I even decided to create an integrated campaign with the Instagram page, studying again, the social behavior of people and how they react “on social for social.

WTF “He who fear death dies only once. [Giovanni Falcone, Sicilian Magistrate, 1939-1992]

WTF.

THE FEAR OF SILENCE. Major Project

WHERE ARE YOU FROM BRIEF: As a designer, it is important to be aware and explore the connections between what you want to create, which kind of target you want to engage with and what kind of message you want to communicate. Gathering information, observation, research, reflection and critical approach are always fundamental steps that you need to take in consideration. However, there is another aspect that actually needs more attention representing the most striking future of your project and it is about studying the reactions that people have related to your outcome. This happens especially when you want to create something that could involve people personally, by their simple experience. Mafia and Corruption are everywhere and are the matter, you can see it or you cannot. You need to analyze the topic critically, it could be in general or in particular, choosing one aspect of the problem, exploring the feelings of people concern the problem. CRITICAL REFLECTION: How design, art, illustration, communication can help address the problem of Mafia and Corruption? How can we inform people about that? Essentially, use your power and imagination as a designer trying to capture the attention of your target audience.

TIPS:

?

- Remember always to select accurately your Target Audience. - Who do you want to talk with? - Who do you want to inform? - Why? - Where? - What do you want to communicate? Always support your idea by a deepened research validating your choices in a critical way.

One whole day on my favourite beach, where all my dreams and pains had originited from. Loved and hated land, that made me who I am today. Taking pictures, observing it from another point of view, mine.

Sicily is a colorful land: the orange of the sunset and citrus, the blue of the sky that reflects on the sea pure and transparent, the yellow of the sun which illuminate and warm up my land.

A little excursus on Messina, where I come from.

To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything. [Goethe]

Newspapers talking about murderers of honest people that tried to fight mafia and corruption: Jounalists, Magistrates, Generals of Army... Painting depicting the symbols of the Sicilian mafia as the Octopus and black and white photographs telling the real story. MOOD COLLAGE N.1

It was July 21st when Paolo Borsellino with his security detail was killed by “Cosa Nostra” through a bomb in the car. Magistrate and valorous man, he played a key-role to discover important connections about the criminal organization. A big tragedy that has not been forgotten on one side, on the side oranges and colourful pictures as the “Vucciria Market” of Palermo by Guttuso which depit the real feeling of the Sicilian life. MOOD COLLAGE N.2

RESEARCH/CONCEPT. In the middle of my research and brainstorming, I discovered something really interesting which became the key-point of the project even if at that time it was very confusing and not defining. The idea came out actually from these “paper for citrus fruit that I found really perfect for my idea and to send a proper message, discovering a whole collection. Using papers as a tool of communication.

MOOD COLLAGE N.3

History & Culture. SICILIAN PAPERS ORANGES. In the early ’900 it was very common for the various farmers or merchants taking into account this paper which is a type of “tissue paper, to create their name/logo doing a proper marketing operation. They used to put some pictures (whatever) and some reminds of citrus (colours, shape or simply the same citrus) and the name of the company making their own brand. This process is very common even nowadays, especially for one kind of orange which is named “Tarocchi Orange”.

Oranges wrapped in papers confering the brand identity to the product.

This mood collage works a sum-up of the whole idea, trying to put everything I need. Colours and natures from Sicily, oranges papers, sicilian people and farmers. MOOD COLLAGE N.6

Inspiration. THE ESSENCE OF FREEDOM. Taking the inspiration from one of my favourite artists, Matisse, I started to sketch human figures. Initially, I sketched women’s bodies, thinking about how mothers feel the fear for their sons, when they start to loose their mind taking part in gangs, close circles and becoming real and proper gangsters.

(A H

HOW HUMANS ACTUALLY FEEL. I imagined an empty space that I drew for purpose as a circle, reminds me of the citrus shape, then I started questioning myself as a human being: - What kind of position we fill in a box? - Are we comfortable or not? - Are we lost? - Maybe we feel narrowed?

Art-matisse.com, 2018) HENRI MATISSE ARTWORKS FROM 1930S | ART-MATISSE.COM - THE DANCE 1933

After I evaluated all the work I have done, I decided to experiment the screen printing technique with the tissue paper, using one of my collages. The last one which works as a sum up of the whole idea. Screen printing Collage attempt.

As can be seen, this first attempt was quite good except for some colours or contrast I wanted to make, studying the differences. In addition to that, I honestly didn’t like the idea to be vague, too abstract. I thought to create something stronger where the message was very visible and cannot be misunderstood or in the worst case, the scenario missed.

BRANDING. Disturbing & Provoking. THE SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE. Studying different possibilities to send a message combining my thoughts in a successful formula in terms of font and logo brand.

WTH WHAT THE HELL? WHERE THE HOPE?

WTH What the Hell? Where the Hope?

FTS

Fight this Silence. Fight this Shit.

WTF

What the Fuck? Why this fear? VITAMIN [C]NOCorruption

ASAP.

PATTERN CREATION. Disturbing & Provoking. 2 DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS. The first version is with portions of Octopus, which, as we saw in my previous research, is a symbol of mafia. The second version is just without the Octopus elements resulting more harmonious with colours and shapes. In both cases, I preferred to put a black background to give more weight to the treated argument.

Experimentations. NEWSPAPERS + OIL PROCESS. It was not a simple process to find out how to make the orange paper after I tried to do on screen printing. First of all, I tried to print out with the laser jet printing because of the difficulty of the drawing, other techniques would require so much time and the result was not guaranteed. The paper was too thin for the printer, I found out to put in the machine attaching an A4, in this way maybe it would work. The expectations were high but the results were inconsistent because the machine took all the paper pull it. At this point, it was just another failed attempt. Thinking and over thinking for days, I finally found out to change the tissue paper with a newspaper. I printed with a normal laser jet and after I spread over my A4, vegetable oil, in detail sunflower oil, appositely chose because from the bottle was the clear one.

Final Outcome. MY PACKAGING. A real bag for citrus, a product of everyday use, to send my message and educate people to know and to understand the topic which even nowadays seems confusing and an object of stereotypes. Do Graphic Design with the purpose to inform.

LITTLE BOOK CONTENTS. As I already mentioned, a little book to attach on the packaging was created with a purpose to explain all the contents and symbols that I created. It contains the explanation of the message.

WTF SYMBOLS MEANING Women’s leg, men’s hand, bodies and heads on one side trapped in an orange... on the other side the strong willingness to want to go out and be free. This is to represent how Humans are totally trapped in the System. Mafia, Corruption and Omertà are the major reasons of our status quo, of our condition.

“Talk about Mafia, talk on the radio, on TV, on the newspapers. But talk!” [Paolo Borsellino, Sicilian Magistrate, 1940 - 1992]

People pushed down and obliged to do something that actually they don’t want to do as dealing with drugs, recicled money, political corruption and in the worst of the case, shooting and killing where often innocents are the victims.

“He who fear death dies only once.” [Giovanni Falcone, Sicilian Magistrate, 1939 - 1992]

Victims of our System, victims of themselves for missed choices in exhange of special favours, becoming the protaganists of tales full of violence and misfortune.

“The Mafia kill, the silence even.” [Giuseppino Impastato, Sicilian business owner, 1948 - 1978]

People who hide a favour behind a right that they actually deserve it. People forced to do not talk, to do not observe, to do not listen.

Killed by mafia because he had the courage to report real facts and evidence of the most complex connections. [Mario Francese, Sicilian Journalist, 1925 - 1979]

It is importantt o say that in all those people there is always the willingness to say NO, to fight, to kick off this disorder as a ball.

“If everyone acting like I do, the extorsionist are destroyed.” [Libero Grassi, Sicilian business owner, 1924 - 1991]

But most of the time the attempt results negative, falling the person in the dephts of darkness.

“There are thinghs to do not because of the courage but to keep going observing your children and their children...” [Generale dalla Chiesa, Sicilian business owner, 1920 - 1982]

MY VOICE THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF WOMEN Target Audience Project

#The 10 Commandments of Women

The different mood of women, victims to remember, events against the violence on women. MOOD COLLAGE N.1

AGAINST THE VIOLENCE ON WOMEN. Pro-choice, pro-woman, pro-voice... That is the right behavior, be PRO and OPEN MINDED!

DIFFERENT TYPES OF VIOLENCE.

Identify all types of violence on women: physical, sexual, emotional and economic. The most universally common forms include domestic and intimate partner violence, sexual violence (including rape), sexual harassment, and emotional/psychological violence. Sexual violence as a tactic of warfare and in the aftermath of emergencies is also common in the respective countries and areas affected. Other widespread forms around the globe include: sexual exploitation, sexual trafficking, and harmful practices, such as female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), forced and child marriage.

“Abortion matters”, everyday women fight to be right on this very controversial topic. MOOD COLLAGE N.2

The favorite accessory for every woman.

Shoes, especially red shoes, are usually employed as a symbol of the violence on women. Sporty, casual, fashion, elegant, hippy... Different styles for different women, to talk to all the women of the world.

Concept.

Sketching cards.

Digital cards to give a Social media impact creating a campaign against the violence on women with eventually, the organization of the proper Event.

Shoes telling a story.

Final Outcome. DIGITAL CARDS. Different shoes for different women as a sign against the violence on women. Cards which tell you a story through commandments. Why commandments? Because people must observe it, you need to observe it. My Voice is a social campaign against the violence on women aiming to inform and educate on the Topic in a different way. These commandments need to be observed and respected, first of all by Women who need to respect themselves. Second of all by men, because Women deserve the same respect as men have. As an integrated campaign, a page on Instagram has been created aiming to be viral.

WHAT GRAPHIC DESIGN IS? THE ROLE OF THE GRAPHIC DESIGNER Poster Project

What makes Graphic Design contemporary?

Having Social always been a key interest of mine, everything concern human’s issue: politic, economy, psicology, philosophy, history... whatever is actually related to “our time” and consequently I can say

“PROBLEM - SOLVING ABILITIES / ACTIVITIES” represent for me a big field full of gaps to fill in. Because of that, as a graphic designer I am feeling the urgency to transform my energy in something more, the responsability to approach myself using graphic design as a tool of challenge. If you think that psicologists, pedagogists, philosophers, critics, artists have always tried to put their thoughts on our Society trying to make making them memorable as a challenge (of course sometimes successfully, sometimes not), WHY GRAPHIC DESIGNERS WOULDN’T DO THAT??

DESIGN RESEARCH

What is the ROLE of the Graphic Designer ?

Nowadays the role of the graphic designer is pretty much confused, especially by the Industry sector. Some people think that we can do everything, some people think that we can’t do anything.

For istance, if you are going to do an interview in a company (smaller or bigger doesn’t change too much unfortunately) they asking your portfolio and probably a small project that you need to present for the occasion. During the interview they analize your idea, your passion, excitment and they actually liked your

positive attitude at first glance.

[Now the BUT comes]

They finished the “artistic” part, now is the knowledge-time. Starting questioning you about all the software you use, all the skills you have. Suddenly, you realize that they want everything from you: ideas, graphic, creative contents, social media, writing, advertisment, campaigns, branding, printing, CAD if you have a certain background as an architect or interior designer. Video, animation, HTML lunguage... Everything they can ask you they will ask you.

Well at this point I guess that I AM NOT A MASTER IN ALL and TO BE HONEST I DON’T WANT TO BE. Even for that, is really important to find what you really want to do with graphic design, finding your vocation specializing in it and creating your own style that will make you different from the others.

To respond to the brief I started questioning myself about my current situation and position in this world. To extend the research I thought to people in general. I wrote some reflections I had on the argument and the brief. Suddenly, a feeling of confusion assault me so I started to collect everything gave me this feeling.

MOOD INSPIRATION to find the right way to do my poster on WHAT GRAPHIC DESIGN IS ?

I looked at places like public spaces studing how always people taking in aconfusing way different directions: metro stations, train stations, museums, streets... After that, I drew simple points with my pen and write on it Graphic design is the position. (Alex Prager Exhibition, 2018)

I went to Alex Prager exhibition and want to put his pictures that remind me exactly my concept. (Alex Prager Exhibition, 2018)

TATE GALLERY (own pic.)

(Alex Prager Exhibition, 2018)

Waterloo Station (own pic.)

I found this pictures really interesting as they creating a movement like a path and inspired me the position of the text on the poster.

After careful considerations and sketches I decided what was the right thing to say about WHAT THE GRAPHIC DESIGN MEANS FOR ME and I made the first trial. I was actually happy but not enough because I felt that it needed something else, like an accent, looking more thought-provoking. So I designed a sort of mask and put it on the existent drawing, giving the feeling of much more confusion. Actually it was by different experimentations that I could get what I wanted.

Nowadays, we are trapped in a constant condition of finding ourselves. Thinking about Social media, Mass media, Apps, Technology and bombs we are under close surveillance not just physically but above all mentally living in an isolated condition, in a world where Empathy is going to lose. With this poster, I wanted to recreate the actual human condition: many points and little lines that give us the feeling of movement but even of caos. Taking into account translation and transfiguration as Graphic Design do, these points are people who are looking for something in order to take the right direction, they are actually confused, lost and they are moving randomly. That is the context where Graphic Design is collocated for me, it can help us to find the right position in this world. Is through this fascinating and limitless discipline that you can express yourself and your thoughts sending a message to your interlocutor, giving them the knowledge to understand better what is going on, inviting them to take a position. People cannot be absent we need presence and participation, so we need to take a position. Graphic Design is the magic tool that permit us to tell a story through social lents communicating the “position that is missed in this world working as an alert, an alarm for the Society.

SECOND EXPERIMENTATION EXPLORING SPACE & FORM

SKETCHBOOK Research - Inspirations.

Having in mind the idea of installation, I started to research spaces to inspire me and I found these interesting art’s installation. In fact, they form with “everyday objects” a pattern in a “common and old” room. So I wanted experiment by myself.

Attracted by the idea of experimenting SPACE & FORM, probably because I have a background as interior designer so I found interesting this accostament once I had the possibility to do it. So I took pictures of my kitchen and put circles on it trying to study the position of the object and possibly creating a pattern, always according to the key words we needed to explore.

VISUAL LITERACY

T H THE CIRCLE AS ALLEGORY. According to Dante Alighieri, the Divine Commedy is the allegory of the inner meaning of the life, where the process of the birth is decribed. A story about the human condition in a metaphoric way: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. An imaginative vision of the afterlife. To describe “the travel“ that humans need to do through the path of the life,

not by accident, he use a structure to funnel formed by circles that indicate the “intrauterine life”. Indeed, the structure is formed by 9 circles as 9 are the months of the birth, telling how the life-path is difficult from the beginning of the life where the circle are tights and narrows. And again, the circle as a container, a delimitation where humans are allocated by his purpose and logic thinking, basically to expiate the mistakes they committed during the real life in order to reach the salvation. In fact, according to his logic, there are “rules and laws” that regulate the position of the humans in the different circles. The “legge del contrappasso” according to which everyone had flaunt whatever in the real life, in the Dante’s poem they are constricted to do the opposite. For instance, those who weren’t able to take “a position” in their life because they were able just to follow the mass and big ideologies without the ability to discern, were collocated at the enter of the Hell, nudes, following a white sign. As can be seen, the circle has an allegoric meaning and it represents “the inner circle”, everyone want to talk or want to converge to the

THE CIRCLE AS PERFECTION. The Vitruvian Man (Italian: Le proporzioni del corpo umano secondo Vitruvio, which is translated to “The proportions of the human body according to Vitruvius”), or simply L’Uomo Vitruviano, it is made by the Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci around 1490 which indicate the perfect proportion of the human body.

Indeed, it represents the studies on how to dr body using simple form as the square and the The drawing and text are sometimes called th or, less often, Proportions of Man. The Vitruvian man is based on the correlations proportions with geometry described by the a Vitruvius in Book III of his treating De architect Vitruvius described the human figure principal source of proportion among the c of architecture. During my experimentations in Visual Grammar I used the mirror as an object to create the installation. Looking at the previous work, I came back on it because talking about facial expressions it was the object that most could represents my thought. I started new experimentations scanning it. I saw that the mirror scanned results black and it was this effect that gave me the idea for my outcome.

Women in the Holocaust pregnant and not Even in this sketch, the women’s kerchiefs are working as a pattern. The circle of belly indicate the circle of life in contrapposition of the whole environment which is full of circles of death.

Children behind the concentration camp As I already mentioned in the Visual Literacy part, I carried on exploring the circle in the Holocaust time to see the accostaments with my shape.

I try to make something with this sketches or the idea of pattern, mouth, eyes, shout... but suddenly I realized that I wouldn’t want to make an illustration but experimenting more even with this elements but in a different way and more graphicly.

Taking pictures of my process trying different combinations in order to make an interesting image representing a sum-up of my whole thought.

For the Final Outcome, I produced different images thinking about what they could be in the reality. The first one, very powerful image, I was sure it would worked as a poster for an exhibition.

Regards the second one, I could recognize it would work as an album cover of a music band like Muse, Evanescence... or a movie.
