MITCHELL COUNTY BRANCH NAACP: It is my pleasure to extend greetings and gra titude to you as you hold your 2022 Freedom Fund Banquet. It is my sincerest hope that this message finds you in good health and well being. For nearly 5 years now, I have had the highest honor of serving as president and CEO of this extraordinary organi zation. I have never been more proud of the work this Association and members like you have done to push this country forward. In a year of reckoning for our nation, the Black community showed undeniable power and resilience in the face of glaring advers ity. In the midst of battling twin pandemics the worldwide outbreak of the deadly coronavirus and the resurgence of Jim Crow era persecution of innocent Black people our community continues to withstand attack after attack on the dignity of the Black life. The NAACP has the power to shake the world, and the world got a glimpse of that power before and during the 2020 Presidential Election, with a record breaking number of ballots cast even before Election Day and the highest overall turnout of our ti me. This election was never about any political party or candidate, but about the conscience of our nation. It was about sound governance from state to state; prioritizing affordable health care, economic stability, quality education for our children, and wholesale relief from the pandemic and structural inequality after a year that nearly broke us. It was about people like you and me, and the power of our vote. We know what can happen when we come together as a community to demand the democracy we rightfully deserve the first woman and the first Black Vice President of the United States, the first African American to represent Georgia in the Senate, and the most diverse Congress in our nation’s history With the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court , we witnessed the first Black woman justice shattering the glass ceiling to finally make room after 233 years for a Black woman on our nation's highest court. This is our time. There is unity in the Black community, and we must continue to demand and establish policies that promote equity, advancement, and justice; policies that will continue to influence history making change for the bett erment of our lives and livelihoods. Our movement will not be silenced; our progress will not be stopped. No matter the battle, We Fight Forward! Peace and Power, Derrick Johnson

VISION STATEMENT

On a Successful 2022 Freedom Fund Banquet Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

OUR MISSION

The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race. “I have come to see more and more that one of the most decisive steps that the Negro can take is that little walk to the voting booth. That is an important step. We've got to gain the ballot, and through that gain, political power.”

Mr. Bullard went to the Board of Education and informed them that he wanted to provide a learning environment for his family, and other children, in the area surrounding his farm. At the time, Mr. Ed Hilliard was the Superintendent of the Board and Ms. Banks, from Atlanta, Georgia, was the Supervising teacher. Mr. Bullard requested from the Board, a teacher and books for the children. He told the Board that he would build the school himself

Though Mr. Bullard passed away in 1967, his legacy lives on. Two of the schoolhouses he built are still partially standing (2003).

THE HISTORY OF THE BULLARD SCHOOL (1941-1950)

The Remains of the First School

Ms. Crumbley Mrs. Hall Mrs. Hawkins

The Remains of the Third School

The Bullard School started in September, 1941 with sixteen (16) children (included members of the Bullard, Burley, Hicks, and McIntyre families) attending a one-room school. There was a need for only one teacher and that teacher had to teach grades 1 6. Ms. Ida Lue Crumbley, the first teacher, stayed only a short time. After Christmas that same year, Mrs. Thelma Johnson Hall was hired as the teacher and taught for several years. After Ms. Hall left, Ms. Eva Hawkins was hired. More children started attending the school than was originally planned for, so Mr. Bullard saw the need to build a two -room school and hire another teacher. This second school later burned down; however, since Mr. Bullard had an unoccupied 3 room house already built, he transformed that house to a school. The last teachers were Ms. Emma Burley and Ms. Green. There were several children attending the school at the time of closing (members included the Bullard, Burley, Cowart, Hicks, McIntyre, Robinson and Ross families).

Mr. Roscoe Jack Bullard 3/1888 5/1967

In 1950, the Board of Education made it possible for a school bus to transport children from Mr. Bullard's area to the school in town. The first bus driver was Mr. Cecil Catchings, Sr.

In 1941, Roscoe Jack Bullard saw the need for a school to be located in his neighborhood because there was no school bus available to take the black children to the school that was located in town. Aside from his children and grandchildren, there were other black children in the area who were in this same predicament and who would benefit from having a school in the area.
