It may be cold outside but I bet you’re feeling all warm and tingly inside as you look forward to your big day! I realize that the majority of weddings in our local area occur during the warmer months but there are still plenty of couples that prefer the winter season and choose to get married this time of year so I was inspired to showcase all that winter has to offer in this issue’s feature and styled inspiration. Designers from Shumaker P.D.T. show you how you can work with layers to bring outdoor, winter themes inside and keep yourself and your guests from freezing! Inspired by the fashion pantone colors Riverside, Airy Blue and Sharkskin, you’ll see just how cool you can make a warm room look. For our feature, I wanted to showcase inspiration with a more mature couple than in past issues. Love is love and whether you’re twenty or fifty, this is your first or fourth marriage, you shouldn’t be afraid to throw a celebration that represents what the relationship brings to your new life.
In terms of style and design, winter weddings tend to be elegant and sophisticated but don’t be afraid to play with cute, cozy details so the cold doesn’t reach your guests. For the bride, we love pairing boots, faux fur or even a leather jacket with your gown to keep warm and add some fun to your look. For the groom, a velvet jacket lends itself to a classic, English look (think James Bond) and a tailored coat for outdoor portraits is the perfect finishing touch. Since a groom’s style is extremely important for complementing the bride, Central PA Tuxedo offers tailored suits, which are a fantastic investment for the groom. The gowns in this feature are from Lilla’s bridal and as you’ll see, layers are key for winter brides! In order to stay warm as needed, consider different looks throughout your day. Lace jackets over a strapless gown provide an extra layer for you that enhances your overall look but is removable. So, for the ceremony, consider that style with your hair down, under a mantilla veil and pair that with classic, nude makeup. For the reception, remove your lace jacket, put your hair up and add more dramatic makeup. This will free you to warm yourself by dancing the night away! The last thing I want to discuss in relation to winter weddings is how photography completely changes since they tend to be primarily inside and there is far less natural light available during this time of year. Seek a photographer who is skilled at this type of work. A natural light photographer may not be a good fit for you when your entire reception takes place after sunset, with dim chandelier lighting.
A good tip is to ask to see a full gallery from a previous wedding so you can see how that photographer handles the changing lighting of the whole day. Bridal shows primarily occur during the winter season and they are a fantastic time to meet with potential vendors. Take advantage of this and attend as many as you can. You’ll most likely see me there so come say hello!

UNDERSTANDING EACH OTHER You’re engaged! You can hardly contain your excitement but the initial high has worn off and you now realize the magnitude of what you need to accomplish in order to have your dream day. You’re a reasonable person and know you can’t possibly expect to do this on your own. So what’s the first thing you do? You start researching wedding planners. As you browse the 85,000 pages of Google search results, you begin to think, “how will I choose who to call?” Dana, owner of Dana M. McGinley Events & Design, has a few tips to offer in order to help you in your process: “As a designer and a planner, my ultimate goal is to help couples realize their Dream Wedding. You want to feel comfortable and confident in your selection of planner because ultimately, if they don’t get you, you don’t get your perfect day. First and foremost, meet with your potential planner in person to ensure you are a good fit. Make sure you select someone with whom you can have fun! Once you’ve partnered with a planner, start by verbalizing your priorities and inspiration to him or her. Remember to include what you see as the focal point of your day. Some people want jaw dropping floral arrangements, others prefer a unique lighting scenario. Whatever it is, it should be something that will make your wedding day memories unique to you! Lastly, be prepared to talk about budget. Obviously budget is a main focus. Make sure you manage your own expectations appropriately but involve your planner as early as possible so that he or she has the opportunity to steer your vendor selection process based on your budgetary goals.” You may think it’s important to lead with the budget talk but Dana believes it’s very important to begin by discussing your dreams so that your expectations regarding budget are appropriately set from the beginning!

THE STUDIO EXPERIENCE by Ashley Gerrity Owner and Principal Photographer, Ashley Gerrity Photography I can remember the struggle of trying to find the perfect photographer when I was getting married. I spent a full day creating a spreadsheet that listed out price ranges and websites and then ranking each photographer based on his or her photographic style. That day, my fiancé (now husband) came home from work to find me crying at the kitchen table over decision anxiety. After all of the effort, I’m sad to admit that I ended up not choosing the best wedding photographer for myself. This is one of the reasons I chose to open Ashley Gerrity Photography and why creating an impeccable client experience is so important to us. There are so many factors that are involved in the decision to hire a wedding photographer and most of these are almost never mentioned on the major wedding websites or written down in the planners. Of course your budget, love of a photographer’s style and connection with your photographer are critical to making a decision but what else should you be taking into consideration? According to a recent industry survey, fewer than 10% of photographers on the market have any type of physical studio. This is one of the things that makes Ashley Gerrity Photography truly unique. At our studio space in the heart of Downtown Philadelphia, we have a professional place to meet, a variety of canvas art samples and dozens of albums and album collections that you can browse while we chat about the experience you’re looking to have with your wedding photography. We love having our clients into the studio for consults, wedding planning, photo viewing and album design sessions. After the wedding, many of our couples will return to the studio for us to capture their newborn or family images.
to enjoy while listening to a great playlist. It is our pleasure to make you at home so that we can get to know about your dream wedding. When considering a studio, I always recommend working with one that is individually owned so that you can be in direct contact with the owner. Although you may save money working with a national chain, your ability to connect with the photographer who will be present on your wedding day and be involved in the process both before and after the day itself may be limited. At an individually owned studio like ours, you will have the chance to meet and talk with your individual lead photographer and even if you are working with our associates, I am still personally involved in the planning process for each of our couples. In fact, all of our clients have my direct contact information. This ensures that if any issues arise along the way, I am personally there to help. Finding the perfect photographer shouldn’t be just about pricing and style. Some of the best photographers will have a professional studio space where they can host, connect and work with clients to give them the full experience they deserve. When choosing a photographer, consider the value that a studio location can offer to you and your overall experience before and after your wedding day, at times when working on-location or in your home may not be right for you.
We love working with our clients at the studio and we always want to make sure the experience is fun so we have a few good bottles of wine, coffee, tea or hot chocolate

our engagemen
ENJOY AND MAKE THE MOST OF THIS TIME Photography by Justin Tearney GETTING ENGAGED is truly thrilling. You just made the initial commitment to spend the rest of your life with the love of your life. The excitement of getting engaged typically leads directly into the wedding planning process and often, couples forget to stop, breathe and enjoy the season of engagement itself. It’s the age old “enjoy the journey because you’ll reach the destination soon enough” issue. Here are some ways to slow down and memorialize your time as an engaged couple. Firstly, there’s absolutely no reason to drive like a mad couple to the altar. Select a wedding date that allows you ample time to prepare so that you can enjoy making each decision that will go into the wedding. If possible, hire your wedding planner first thing. Let him or her organize your entire planning process so you simply get to do the fun parts. With time and structure, you will truly decrease the stress, avoid potential relationship-scarring fights and have a fun planning process. Next, don’t skip on the engagement photos. Absolutely take the time to style and plan an engagement session with a

PROFESSIONAL photographer. (Yes, I’m emphasizing professional. Now is not the time to have your sister snap a few iPhone photos of you. You’re better than that!) If possible, use the same photographer that you select to shoot your wedding. This allows you to feel what it will be like to work with him or her prior to the big day so you can relax in front of the lens. These also add to the story of your life together and are such a sweet reminder of the whirlwind of excitement you’re feeling as you prepare for your wedding day. GROOMS, take it one step further and secure the photographer for the engagement itself. Whether you’re planning to propose in an intimate setting or with a large gathering of friends and family as witnesses, how amazing would it be to remember the tears, laughter and joy of when she says yes! In our fast-paced society, it gets far too easy to blow right by the moments that make our life as a whole. Don’t wish you “would have.” Stop. Breathe. Enjoy & make only the best memories.

HELLO GORGEOUS! Your surface is just that...an outward expression of your true self. It’s the first thing people see when they look at you but it’s also a canvas for you to project an image to the world. Makeup, especially on your wedding day, should be about bringing out the beauty and positivity you have in you. It shouldn’t be about applying a mask. Your wedding day, probably more than any other day, is a time when you want all of the joy, happiness and beauty you are feeling on the inside to be reflected on your canvas. Maggie King from Mkup the Beauty Studio couldn’t agree more. “One of the things we say at the studio and to all of our clients is that ‘we’re part teacher, part confidant and your best makeup girlfriends.’ That last part is especially important. If you can feel comfortable with us and allow us to connect with you while we work with you, we can do the same. This allows us to help relax you, make you laugh so that your inner beauty shines while we’re working on your surface. Doing your makeup is much more about how we make you feel than how we make you look.” Those who have worked with Maggie and her team describe them as “fun, bubbly and positive” and we’ve seen this first-hand on Dream Weddings styled inspiration shoots. Maggie so effortlessly brings out the best side of her clients. Doesn’t that sound like exactly what you want on your wedding day?
