The ice, snow, frigid air and melancholy skies of winter are a beautiful reminder of how contrast is needed for us to experience life to its fullest. This is why I am always thankful to curl up under a cozy blanket and binge watch Netflix this time of year. It’s a little reprieve from all of the running around us wedding vendors do the rest of the year. But this is still a busy time for you, isn’t it?! So many design choices to make and vendors to book for your big day. Or maybe your wedding is during the colder months so you’re in the final stretch and paying super close attention to the minute, last-minute details. Either way, always remember to be present, in the moment, and enjoy whatever today brings! If you’re in your planning process for a spring, summer or fall wedding this year (or next), don’t allow yourself to get behind. Remember that many wedding ven-

dors book a year or more ahead of time. Don’t put yourself in a situation where you’ve found the perfect photographer or florist but they’re already booked! Another reason not to delay booking your vendors (and I share this little tip with everyone I meet at bridal shows) is that any business raises its prices every year. Wedding vendors are no exception. Booking your vendors NOW ensures you lock in their current prices and aren’t subject to paying more for the same services, just because you waited. This issue’s feature was shot by Justin Tearney at the beautiful Box Hill Mansion in York, PA. Gowns for our models were provided by Blush Bridal (formerly The Bridal Emporium) and you will see so many ways to wear different dress styles, paired with complementing hair and jewelry. And this was such a special feature for us to shoot because Box Hill was the location for the Dream Weddings Magazine Premier Issue Feature in 2011, nearly 7 years ago! To say we were nostalgic is putting it mildly. I say it all the time but there truly is something for everyone in this feature! Speaking of wedding dress styles, I did something a little different with the Tips page in this issue. In collaboration with Tiffany from Tiffany’s Bridal Boutique, I’ll walk you through the different gown and neckline types and tell you which styles work best with your figure so be sure to check that out! Lastly, I want to remind you that this is bridal show season! I always encourage

couples to attend as many bridal shows as possible during the information gathering portion of their planning. You’ll meet a ton of talented vendors and have the opportunity to connect with them one-onone to see if they’re the right fit for you! I personally attend and exhibit at roughly 20 bridal shows per year so chances are, you'll see me somewhere! Happy Planning Dreamers!

Managing Stress on Your Wedding Day We’ve all heard the horror stories & nightmares that have couples fearing the worst as they move through their wedding planning process. The caterer was in a car accident. The groom’s pants were three inches too short. The best man was drunk before the ceremony even began. The bakery delivered the wrong cake...The list is endless! Everyone talks about how planning a wedding is so stressful and getting through the day can be downright insane, but the truth is that it doesn’t have to be this way! I wanted to share a few tips from my team to help you manage the stress leading up to and on your wedding day so that you can fully savor all of the wonderful moments. If you leave the stress behind, you’ll have more meaningful memories from the day AND the ability to relax will translate into more authentically beautiful photos . So here’s what we’ve learned:

1. Hire an Excellent Photographer No, we’re not just talking about someone who wins awards and takes beautiful photographs, although that is a great starting point. The most important step to hiring your wedding photographer is ensuring that their personality is one that meshes with yours and whom you trust. The right photographer will be able to help you stay on track with your wedding plans, will remain calm & collected in the most difficult circumstances and will be able to gauge your stress levels through out the day, giving you the space to breathe and take in the moment. When you look at photographer reviews, look for key phrases about how they made the couple feel in the moment, not just the quality of the photographs or products. When you hire an excellent photographer who is dedicated to giving you the best experience on your wedding day in addition to amazing photographs, you can rest assured that you have at least one person helping you manage wedding day stress. 10

dream weddings | winter 2018

2. Hire a Wedding Planner A wedding planner can be an absolute lifesaver. They have tons of connections with professionals that they trust, who do great work, are punctual and professional. They are fantastic organizers who are gifted with patience and there to help you sort through the minutiae that goes into planning a perfect wedding day. They can be a point of contact for friends and family who need assistance so that you don’t have to field their phone calls and they will run interference for you if any issues pop up. Many couples worry about their budgets when considering the value of a wedding planner but most planners are skilled at helping you to manage and maintain your budget. If full wedding planning isn’t in the cards for you, remember to look at month or day-of coordination options.

3. Plan Time to Not Plan Put down the Pinterest. Walk away from the seating chart. Dump the diet. Schedule black out days on your calendar when wedding planning is absolutely taboo and take time for you (alone) and your relationship. Schedule date nights throughout the month that have nothing to do with cake tastings or discussing transportation needs. Drink a glass of wine (or two) without counting the calories. Weddings are super fun and exciting experiences that we don’t get to have every day, so oftentimes couples immerse themselves in them and forget to balance it with other things.

4. Remember Why You Are Getting Married With all the moving parts in a wedding, there is a high likelihood that something will not go as planned. Whether it rains on your engagement session day, you’re chasing down RSVPs until the week beforehand or your bachelorette weekend gets a little too crazy, there will be something that requires you to take a deep breath and let it go. So, repeat after me, “It’s okay, I’m letting go.”

In those moments, it’s important to remember what you are really doing all of this for. It’s not just about the great party with your closest friends & family. (Even if that’s what they believe). It’s not just about getting all dolled up and looking amazing. (Although, you will). It’s not just about eating amazing food and decadent desserts. (But after that wedding diet, I promise it will taste so good!) The reason you are having a wedding is to marry the love of your life and your very best friend. To be able to stand with them and pledge your love and life to each other. Everything else is just the icing on that delicious cake!

CLASSIC ROMANTIC Creating something from nothing is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Taking the blank canvas of a hillside field with a gorgeous view and erecting an event space that’s styled down to every last detail, provides a sensation that can be compared to no other when you finally see it all come together. Creating something is an essential part of satisfaction in the human experience. Wooden pillars allow for overhead café lights and chandeliers to be strung over an elegant, lush Tablescape. The dark blue water glasses seal the color within the theme and provide a dash of bold to the romantic styling. photography LESLIE GILBERT PHOTOGRAPY | venue LAUXMONT FARMS | styling & design LESLIE GILBERT | floral design PETALS WITH STYLE | rentals WEDDINGS BY JDK | linens SPECIAL OCCASIONS & QUEEN STREET LINENS

organic ethereal

The word “curated” completely defines this event. You can tell each item styled was carefully selected to portray an intimate setting where guests were able to feel a little bit more in touch with their hosts. A garden setting is always a perfect place to throw a casual, buffet style affair and utilize the elements of nature to display a lush and appetizing spread. But remember that simply because something is casual doesn’t mean it needs to be boring! Layering elements such as a raw, barn wood table with a plant-dyed, natural linen table runner and muted green garland keeps with the theme that the event is styled, rather than just planned. Hand prepared, colorful, organic and artfully displayed food adds to the personal touch. photography JUSTIN TEARNEY PHOTOGRAPHY | venue LITITZ HISTORICAL FOUNDATION GARDENS | tables OLD BARN STAR | culinary & cake MEGAN TEARNEY | floral design HEATHER HEAGY OF CUSTOM FLORALS paper suite ZAZZLE | linen table runner SILK & WILLOW

YOUR WEDDING GOWN IS THE MOST MEMORABLE FASHION STATEMENT YOU WILL EVER MAKE! WE WANT TO HELP YOU CONSIDER WHICH SILHOUETTES AND NECKLINES WILL BEST CONVEY YOUR STYLE AND FLATTER YOUR FIGURE. SO WE TALKED WITH TIFFANY FROM TIFFANY’S BRIDAL BOUTIQUE IN STEVENS, PA TO BRING YOU TIPS ON CHOOSING THE BEST DRESS STYLE FOR YOU!

IN ADDITION TO THE STYLE OF DRESS YOU CHOOSE, THE PROPER NECKLINE CAN ACCENT YOUR BEST FEATURES AND HELP YOU FEEL SECURE IN YOUR GOWN. USE OUR GUIDE SO YOU KNOW WHAT NECKLINES TO TRY AND HOW TO ASK FOR THEM AT THE BRIDAL SALON.

The gown follows the torso and then gracefully angles out at the waist. While this shape can complement any figure, it’s especially good for petite (the unbroken lines can make you appear taller) and full- figured (hips become less noticeable) brides.

A marriage (no pun intended!) of Mermaid & A-Line, it hugs the torso and flows outward at mid-thigh (making it less restrictive than the Mermaid). It’s a fantastic style for those with hourglass figures.

If you have a great hourglass figure, this is the style that will accent your features the most. The fit contours the body from the chest to the knee and then dramatically flares out. The only drawback to wearing this style all day is that it can be a bit restrictive when dancing.

The clean lines of this classic shape lend themselves to weddings of every style. It’s the finishing touches (lace, bling, ruching, etc.) that make it traditional, formal, retro or modern. It’s a good choice for tall, slender or petite brides.

Cinderella defines this fairy-tale look that begins with a fitted bodice/ waistline and ends with a full skirt. The style complements nearly every shape; the only exception is the petite bride, whose stature may be overwhelmed by the full skirt.

The updated version of empire styling is perfect for more casual affairs (a beach wedding, perhaps). The preferred fabric, chiffon, flows from under the bustline to provide an ethereal look. This style is a good choice for tall, slender or petite brides.

The Sweetheart dips in the middle, creating a heart-shaped design that’s especially complementary to brides with fuller busts.

Simple and clean, this neckline is commonly seen on strapless gowns and complements brides with small chests & shoulders.

Art and calligraphy by 24

dream weddings | winter 2018

It covers the shoulders but takes a Sweetheart shape over the bust. A good choice for brides with fuller chests.

This flattering neckline (good for B or C cups) can be as demure or daring as you’d like! It’s also a style that lends itself to sleeves.

This classic, U-shaped neckline flatters brides with all types of figures and bust sizes. It also pairs well with a variety of necklaces.

any people think of pastels for Spring but the truth is that pastels work any time of year when it comes to wedding styling. Pastel pink, green, blue and even gray tones can be paired to convey a soft air of romance. The nice thing is, all you have to do is change the ratio of which color you predominantly use in your design elements, based on which season you’re tying the knot! Take the pantone color forecast for YOUR wedding date and simply style with the pastel version of those colors. produced & styled by MARTINE CAJAS | photography KATY TREFRY PHOTOGRAPHY | gowns LILLA'S BRIDAL BOUTIQUE FEATURING RICHARD SOLODKY | jewelry & accesssories LILLA'S BRIDAL BOUTIQUE | hair & makeup FLAWLESS FACADE | groom's attire CENTRAL PA TUXEDO | floral design LAURA OF LAUXMONT | cake & desserts HOUSE OF CLARENDON

TIPS FROM A PRO

Have Flawless Skin on Your Wedding Day

Maggie King from Mkup the Beauty Studio is an advanced expert in highlighting, contouring, shading and color theory makeup techniques. Dream Weddings works with her and her team quite often on photo shoots as well as to bring you the best in makeup education. We sat down with Maggie to discuss the most common things she wishes brides, grooms and anyone wanting to look their best in wedding day photos knew to consider prior to receiving a professional makeup application and we’re bringing you some info to help you prepare. “It used to take a lot of effort to understand and receive skin treatments such as chemical peels, Botox, Dermaplaning, etc. but these services have become so mainstream and so many professionals now have the techniques dialed in that it’s much easier to assess and receive one or more treatments that will allow for your best skin and makeup application, come your wedding day.” So let’s get into a few of these, shall we? Enzyme Vs. Chemical Peels Basically, the difference between the two is that enzyme peels are typically utilizing plant-based or more natural ingredients and are often gentler than a chemical peel. So those with a need for lighter resurfacing of the skin that allows for dead skin cells and debris to be removed and rejuvenation to occur may want to consider enzyme peel treatment. Those with scarring from acne or deeper dark spots

from sun or tanning damage may want to consider chemical peel treatment since it typically produces better results for these issues by working a little deeper. For the Enzyme Peel, Maggie recommends setting up a consultation with a dermatologist or provider at least 6 months out. Effects from an enzyme peel can last 4 – 6 weeks but don’t wait to have your first one only 4 weeks prior to the wedding. Have a trial peel at least 3 months before the big day. If all goes well and you like your results, have a refresher peel 2 -3 weeks out so your makeup application on the wedding day goes smoothly and you’re looking radiant! With a chemical peel, consult with a professional as soon as possible if you think that’s the route you need to go, based on your skin. Since these are harsher than the enzyme peel, typically take longer to heal and you may need multiple treatments, you’ll want to leave plenty of time for the entire course you may need to achieve your desired results. Remember NEVER to do anything drastic or try anything for the first time too close to your wedding day. Botox Injections To Botox or not to Botox, that is the question! Often times, Maggie is asked if she can use makeup to fill in fine lines or wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes or near the mouth and essentially make them disappear. The answer is always a resounding, “Nope!” In fact, makeup can sit in the groove of these fine lines and H I L L A RY M U E L L E C K

make them even MORE apparent. So that your makeup application goes as smoothly as possible, Maggie suggests consulting with a legit professional regarding whether or not Botox is right for you 9-12 months out. Depending on the severity of the lines you wish to treat, injections can last anywhere from 3-6 months so if you find that Botox is right for you, again, have an initial treatment as far from the wedding date as possible to test your reaction and your results. If you like your results, have a refresher treatment 2-3 months from your wedding date. Dermaplaning This is a method of exfoliation that consists of using a scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dulling, dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. It also removes peach fuzz anywhere it is applied. These very tiny and fine hairs take on whatever makeup is being applied and they can suddenly look extremely apparent, especially in back-lit portraits where sunshine wraps around the subject and illuminates the edges of the face and neck. The nice thing about this treatment is that it is painless and there is literally no downtime. Still, if you have sensitive skin, Maggie recommends you consult with a practitioner about 3 months out from your wedding date. Try a treatment. If you like it, have another one roughly 1-2 weeks out so you have bright, smooth skin that is ready for a flawless makeup application!

Lancaster is know for antiquing. Take some time and explore the county for a one-of-a-kind piece of jewlery to wear with your dress. Or find unqiue items to create centerpieces or decorations to customize your venue.
