The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping and the breeze is warm. You know spring is here! I personally couldn’t wait for it. Spring to me means that wedding season is upon us and wedding season is absolutely my favorite time of year. Whether your wedding is right around the corner or you’re still smack dab in the middle of your planning process, everyone is excited and inspired. My hope for this issue of the Dream Weddings Magazine was to continue to inspire you with classic design elements as well as a few bold styling moves. Remember that your wedding is not about checking each of the items you need to host an event off of a list. It’s about creatively expressing your individuality as well as your relationship throughout your theme. Be artistic, be open! You will see in our feature that while we incorporate plenty of flowers into the design, it’s certainly not in a traditional way. Paper flowers have become a huge trend…and a classy one! You can play with colors,

shapes and designs in a whole new way and they turn even the most bland space into a unique and elegant one. You can use them as a backdrop to your cake, head or sweetheart table, whether it’s half of a wall or a full wall. They allow you to transform a space to be unique to you. Remember (and I can’t stress this enough) that your wedding photographer and videographer should be the two biggest investments you will make. The average wedding photography package in 2016 ran between $4000 - $8000 so don’t be surprised by what quality costs! After the vows are spoken, the cake is eaten, the lights are off and the music stops playing, your photos and video footage are the only things you will have to look back on for years to come. This is why it’s so imperative to choose a photographer whose style and approach will allow him or her to capture you in a way that you want to see yourself. Who are you as a couple? Are you cute and classic? Are you contemporary and fashion driven? Are you organic and reserved? Choose a photographer who works best when capturing people like you. The videographer is JUST as important because they can be everywhere you can’t be. While you’re getting ready, they can capture how your ceremony space is coming together. While you’re saying your vows, they can capture the reaction on your parent's faces…something you wouldn’t otherwise get to see! Also, don’t forget that different approaches are called for in different scenarios. Lighting is everything to these vendors! If you’re having an outdoor, naturally lit ceremony and reception, perhaps a fine-art, film photographer is the

best fit for you. If you’re having an urban, indoor, up-lit event, a digital photographer who is used to working in those conditions is probably a good fit for you. Just remember to take your time and really focus on your search for the perfect photographer and videographer, asking them if they feel they would be the best fit for you. Albums, Prints & Preserving Your Memories by Ashley Gerrity: Owner and Principal Photographer, Ashley Gerrity Photography Paging through the memories of my own parent's wedding album and hearing the story that each photo evokes is one of my great joys from childhood. One of the first things that I did right after my own wedding was to design a statement album with all of my favorite images from the day. The expense, to me, was an investment in my family’s story. I often tell couples that their wedding album doesn’t exist for them, it exists for their children and grandchildren. As a professional photographer, nothing gives me more pleasure than being able to produce heirloom quality printed products, through which my clients can savor their wedding photos. Although we happily offer digital files for each of our clients, many couples choose to stop by the studio or video chat with us to design their wedding album. After months or years of planning, the wedding album stands as a tangible testament to the beauty of their wedding day. Because we are committed to creating the best experience for our couples from engagement through their lives together, we give them the opportunity to wait until after their wedding before committing to a particular album option. We believe the best time to choose an album is after you’ve seen and absorbed all of the photos, relived the memories and decided which ones will best reflect the moments that defined the day. We offer three different collections of artisan albums, handmade in Italy, bound and covered in a variety of leathers and other materials. When people think of a wedding album, they often remember their parent's album with full-sized, aging images mounted

inside of a heavy leather case. The wedding albums of today are quite different and are artfully created in a wide variety of styles. We have options ranging from economical art books with photographic papers to classic collection books, which can feature image die-cuts, covers and dozens of luxury leathers to choose from. With modern printing technology, there is a perfect wedding album available for every couple. Not only can you choose to feature your wedding images in a gorgeous album, you can also have heirloom quality prints of your images to display in your home. Although canvas prints are still very popular, there has been a marvelous gravitation towards classic, matted and framed wall art. We love seeing images presented in a frame, it is such a timeless way to feature your portraits. Plus, you can always switch out the images as your family grows and throughout your life together, making framed photos a wonderful way to adorn your home with the loving memories you begin to create on your wedding day. Regardless of your preferred presentation, choosing a full-service photographer who offers a multitude of print and album options after your wedding day will help ensure that your memories live on beyond a USB drive. Research has shown that digital files only rarely make it beyond Facebook, that USBs are easily lost or deleted, and technology (although we love it) is quickly obsolete with new innovations. Digital files, coupled with high quality printed products, will ensure that your perfect wedding day lives on for generations to come.

Design & Planning Tips by Dana McGinley, Owner: Dana M. McGinley Events & Design Let me ask you a question: How many flowers’ names do you know? Sure, everyone knows what a rose and carnation look like but if I told you to picture a chrysanthemum or succulent, would you be able to? It’s not a trick question and it’s okay if your answer is “no.” My point in asking is to say that most of my couples don’t know a lot of what I know when we begin designing and planning their wedding.

an indoor, contemporary space.” They spent a large portion of their time getting to know one another through hiking and having picnics so they wanted to incorporate that theme into their celebration without having to worry about inclement weather potentially ruining their day. They also both happened to be teachers who initially met at a conference. Considering these concepts and that “Greenery” is the color of the year, I designed tablescapes with plaid linen, leafy table runners and apple favors. Speaking of favors, I cannot tell you how many couples wrack their brains over them. On average, my couples that do choose to have favors spend between $200-$400 on them. When my couples are on the fence about favors, I suggest that unless they have a favor that is truly a part of their overall theme and styling (like these apples that represent the story of how this couple met), consider a few alternatives: Your guests will most remember how much fun they had celebrating with you so you can use the money you would have spent on favors to allow for extra time from your band or DJ, a fun photo booth, upgraded dinner choices or extra hors d’oeuvre selections. Another alternative is to donate money to a cause or charity that speaks to you. Place a beautiful piece of stationary that matches your invitations, menus, etc. at each place setting, explaining the donation so that guests can see that rather than sitting a chocolate bar on their plate, you’ve done something meaningful to commemorate your day. Ultimately, there are many alternatives to traditional favors. It’s up to you to decide how much importance you place on this part of your planning. The good news is, there is no right or wrong and an experienced designer and planner can help you with this and so many more decisions!

I’ve done this before and I do it every day. I’ve gained the knowledge necessary to take a concept and plan the details so that concept becomes a reality. I love taking the vision that you describe to me and telling you the name of the flower, leaf, pattern, material, etc. that you’re picturing in your mind. This very tablescape was inspired by a couple who pictured “layers of outdoor picnic elements, paired with

the fine art of film Film photography. It’s making a comeback. Although it hardly left the scene altogether, many photographers are choosing to return to the medium that allowed them to embrace their subjects on a truly intimate level while shooting. Truthfully, we’re thankful for the era where digital reigned supreme because in a way, it diversified photographers and allowed each to dive into their medium of choice and define their individual approach and style. For this article, we sat down with JUSTIN TEARNEY to discuss the strengths of film and learn why he chose to primarily shoot on it when capturing weddings for his clients. “I’m a storyteller, first and foremost. I’m not just taking pictures of my subjects in beautiful poses. My goal is to connect with people on a level that allows me to capture their energy, emotions, essence...this is what ensures my clients love their photos for a lifetime.” We asked Justin how shooting on film specifically allows him to make this connection. “Don’t get me wrong, digital photography has its strengths. I shoot that too, when the situation calls for it. But film, specifically medium-format film, allows me to take in all the details of what’s happening. There’s no looking at a display screen to ensure you got the shot so you’re forced to truly hone your craft and get good at just knowing you had all of the elements right.” We asked Justin what he feels are some of the aesthetic draws to photographs shot on film. “To me, there are so many beautiful things about it but I’m specifically drawn to the colors and tonality. There’s a subtle softness to film images that is really very flattering for portraiture.
