Luxury, Art and Design weekend at Martinhal Sagres For the past 8 years the first weekend of November has been the most special time for Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort. On 1st – 3rd November this family-friendly luxury resort – that will celebrate 10 years in 2020 will host the 8th edition of the Luxury, Art & Design Weekend (LADW) bringing together artists, creatives and successful brands, with a special focus on (news) Portuguese talent. During these 3 days artists, designers, entrepreneurs and brands will present their projects, sharing their origins and creative processes that have turned them into successful stories in their areas in Portugal and beyond. Since Portugal is strongly connected to gastronomy, one of the highlights of this weekend will be a special dinner created by Chef Bruno Caseiro, paired with the best national wines.
Maria Imaginário, Artist in Residence Currently living and working in Lisbon, Edna Costa, known in the artist world as Maria Imaginário, is frequently present at international art galleries and fairs, having also been to Milan, Rome, London, Lyon, Paris, Miami, Atlanta and San Diego, among others. Represented by the Portuguese “Underdogs Gallery”, Maria is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation, painting, street art and sculpture.
Edna is the resident artist chosen by Martinhal for 2019. This collaboration began with the installation of an art piece at Martinhal Cascais for International Children’s Day and will be culminating with a presentation of a special set of custom-made pieces for the 8th Edition of Luxury Weekend, Art and Design, in Sagres. In this exhibition, which will be open until October 2020, we will see large and small tapestries, the result of several experiments made by the artists, whose main concept was to explore the shape of water, its colors, the illusion that distortion causes and the creatures that dwell in it. About the artist
Gastronomy Bruno Caseiro was taken to the kitchen universe by his passion for food. With a degree in psychology he decided to change his career and after finishing hospitality studies he traveled the world to learn from the best. He worked with Nuno Mendes, Alex Atala, Tom Sellers, Leandro Carreira and Kobe Desramaults always keeping a close eye on what was going on in his country. Because he likes to cook what gives him pleasure to eat, he found the perfect setting in Alentejo. There, where time stretches and extends into lively nights and hearty tables, he seeks to reflect the biodiversity that characterizes the region on the plate and on the palate. Bruno, currently leading the kitchen of the Cavalariça restaurant in Comporta, will be responsible for creating a special dinner, inspired
by seasonal regional products, paired by the extraordinary Portuguese wines of Vicentino. Lillet aperitifs, Perrier-Jouët champagnes and Absolut Elyx cocktails will also be served, kindly offered by Pernod Ricard Portugal, that is considered one of the world’s leading companies in the wine and spirits industry and a long-time partner of Martinhal’s Luxury, Art & Design Weekend.
Ole Martin Siem has travelled the world, but it was in Portugal where he got fascinated by Alentejo wines and where he found the ideal conditions for wine production. Dazzled by the landscapes of Costa Vicentina, where the sea and the cliffs meet in a unique ecosystem, this was the place chosen over 30 years ago by Ole Martin Siem, where he later planted vineyards leading to Vicentino wines. Vicentino is the tribute to this unique region of Portugal, whose vineyards are privileged by its location near the sea. The Atlantic sun and breeze make this terroir the birthplace of fresh and exceptional wines.
Made in Portugal Filipe Alves and Rute Magalhães are the founders and creative minds of Silverbox Studio, the project that bets on a new concept of photography: the fusion of nineteenth century photographic techniques with 21st century aesthetics. They work with Wet Collodion, a near 160-year-old photographic process when photographs are taken
using a period equipment, giving the image a timeless atmosphere. Everything is done as it has been done before: you study the poses, choose the best lighting in a calm manner, because every image will tell a story.
Bisarro emerged as a socio-cultural project, strongly linked to artisanal and creative roots. Bisarro’s original idea as a project focused on black clay ceramics, driven by two designers: Renato Rio Costa and Daniel Pera. When later Daniel left the project later, Micael Bacelar Pereira and Daniel Bacelar Pereira have joined in. The core of the project is black pottery, valuing this art and the people who practice it. The black pottery is a secular art transmitted through generations of craftsmen dedicated to the production and commercialization of utilitarian and decorative pieces. With this the Bisarro concept is based on strong symbiosis of design and craftsmanship worlds, from which unique ideas and products result.
More than a brand, Yen Sung defines CURRY as a passion - for Africa, women and art! This very special fashion brand launched an exclusive edition of kimonos last June with collaboration of three Portuguese artists: Kruella D’Enfer, Wasted Rita and Tamara Alves. The result was exhibited at Casa-Atelier Vieira da Silva in Lisbon with the theme “Art can be displayed anywhere and in any form”. CURRY showcases the result of a 100% female partnership - from production to communication, through presentation and design of the
project. Some of the CURRY X Artists initiative profit is donated to ideauniversal.org, an ONG that creates innovative programs for people in need to have access to clean water, food and education.
DARKSIDE Eyewear is a luxury eyewear brand that combines sophisticated and timeless design with top quality materials. All products are designed in the brand’s studio in Porto, 100% handcrafted in a small local factory, where each pair of finished glasses is individually molded, balanced and hand polished to ensure that those who wear DARKSIDE have the feeling of wearing something really special. Lightweight and comfortable sunglasses made of Italian Mazzucchelli acetate, with high quality CR39 lenses, coming in a leather case that is also handmade in Portugal. “We believe that with buying less, we’re buying better, so we design eyewear that goes beyond the seasons and trends, using manual processes that define handcrafted glasses.”
Friends for over a decade, Diana and Maria have always worked in fashion and beauty: Diana as a stylist and fashion editor, and Maria in communication and public relations for cosmetic brands. Tired of an automated way of life lacking spiritual meanings, united by friendship and both seeking a more conscious and nature-related lifestyle, they decided to create erva moura as the way to bring people closer to natural rituals that allow to live a deeper, more conscious and meaningful life. All items of erva moura have been carefully chosen to provide an experience. A crystal to accompany you during the day; a jade roll
with which we massage the face; a branch of sage or holy stick that we light to let its purifying aroma take over physical and spiritual state where we’d find ourselves. These rituals project a desire for change. It may be a bad energy or heavy environment, it may simply be moodiness, it may be the pressure of time that sometimes seems to slip through our fingers. Or it may just be the need to slow down and breathe without precaution.
Paulo Sebastião is an engineer turned into baker who since 2018 plays with pastry at ISCO bakery in Alvalade. Before that he spent 10 years in Sweden, Stockholm, learning everything he wanted to know about bread. He worked as a baker at the Petrus bakery in Stockholm, which was named the best bakery in Sweden in two of the three years that Paul has been working there. It was also in Sweden that Paul has learned how to make typical kanelbulle, a half-open base cake with a touch of cardamom and a filling of butter, sugar and cinnamon, that everyone can learn how to make at the baker’s workshop. ISCO is a neighborhood bakery inspired by Portuguese, French and Nordic traditions. A space for sharing and communicating about bread, where you can see the production is the concept of transparency - one of the pillars of this project. Opened in September 2018, ISCO bakery has quickly won the hearts of Alvalade residents and already have fans from all over Lisbon. While talking on breaks at work, Pedro Palha and Vasco Mendonça were far from imagining that they would launch a clothing brand. Pe-
dro Gaspar joined the duo being concerned about the lack of quality men’s basics - after reading Yvon Chouinard’s biography, the founder of Patagonia, the brand that has sustainability as its flagship. To solve the problem of finding a good shirt they launched ISTO in 2017. The three friends decided to create clothes that would conciliate the functional and practical nature of it, without neglecting the aesthetic side. “We wanted to produce properly made basics with good materials. And to have a more transparent relationship with consumers by sharing the cost of producing each piece and by using more organic and sustainable materials,” - they explain. In addition, the production had to be national.
Martinho Pita has a degree in Architecture and Arts from ECA (Edinburgh College of Art) in 2007, he worked in several architecture workshops such as Aires Mateus and Joao Pedro Falcão de Campos. In 2009 he travelled to India to work with Urbanouveau* on the development and implementation of the “Incremental Housing Strategy” in the slums of Yerawada in Pune. And in 2010 he joined the MVRDV architecture studio in Rotterdam to work closely with the Urbanouveau* “Connecting-Stockholm” project in Stockholm. Currently residing in Lisbon, he created Martinho Pita Studio, a multidisciplinary studio that works both solo and in collaboration in different artistic areas, product design, architecture and implementation of social strategies. His works portray a significant combination of tradition, innovation and passion.
Sul bags and leather goods are hand-made one by one by artisans who give them all the time needed until they look the way they should. They are made in small editions and with leather that inspires them. When they find a beautiful leather that fits one of the models, they take advantage of it, even though they can do only one piece with it. “We like to feel the materials that age with use, worn with the touch of the hands, the sun and the rain. We have no collections according to the seasons, nor do we follow trends. We are about simplicity, pieces that last over time, from parents to children, with moments to tell, engraved as tattoos,â€?- says Dora OsĂłrio, who founded the brand in 2014 with her brother Duarte.
German founders and a beautiful Portuguese historic city of Porta stand at the origins of Claus Porto brand. A house of fragrances and beauty products was born from the union of these two European identities, which marked its 130th anniversary in 2017. Each Claus Porto product has a unique history and personality, with images inspired by other labels that take us to glamorous European Belle Epoque. Each fragrance is based on ingredients from the rich Portuguese flora. All of these elements take shape in the brand factory that remains in its hometown of Porto till today, where the soap is produced using ancient techniques each individually wrapped.
From Abroad Brand launched in 1996 as Davines Group’s spa skin care division, [comfort zone] is now an award-winning skin products brand in over 45 countries. All [Comfort zone] products are the result of a synergy of innovative active principles, not limited to a single approach but selecting the most effective product-by-product responses. Safe, effective products and a source of pleasure for the senses that are not tested on animals. “[Comfort zone] was born out of my passion for beauty and science and the desire to offer professional solutions and effective home treatments. Enriched by the constant contribution from a team of experts in medical disciplines and human science, we work passionately to bring new meaning to the word “holistic” and make the skin a true expression of health and joy of life,”- says Davide Bollati, the founder. “At Davines, we believe that living in balance with Beauty and Sustainability, which we call Sustainable Beauty, can improve our lives and the world around us,” - he concludes.
A delicate fusion of skin treatment and make-up, Les Essentiels du Maquillage by EISENBERG offer skincare benefits that appeal to every woman’s daily beauty routine for an immediate result. With their exquisitely sober lines, the range’s packaging reveals great care in detail and a special concern for excellence. They perfectly reflect the brand’s philosophy: timelessness, luxury and identity.
José Eisenberg’s creative spirit is also expressed in the composition of perfumes and unique concepts such as L’Art du Parfum and Les Orientaux Latins. Her creations bring together art and perfume and are illustrated in a vast collection of heady, delicate aromas, declined in exquisite bottles.
ABOUT Brazil is a new brand that brings a careful selection of Brazilian products to Europe, all with an original history and as a result of hard work, passion and respect for nature. Focusing on sustainability the brand has initially started with a small production of high-quality cachaça, now featuring an exclusive collection of cotton homewear, hand-embroidered by artisans from the Brazilian ONG Acaia, and a collection of jewellery in partnership with Christina Cunali.
