rowing up in a mixed race family, I must admit to having never fully embraced the Indian culture. With my father’s family being Roman Catholic and predominantly Coloured, and my mother’s side being Indian and a mix of religious beliefs, finding common ground was somewhat tricky – so I just stuck with my paternal culture and beliefs.

But slowly yet surely, and as I became introduced to the song, dance, intense story lines and colourful costumes that are Bollywood, my interest in the Indian culture developed. I suddenly couldn’t wait for wedding invites, Hindu ceremonies in particular, as the vibrant colours, over-the-top décor and rich aromas were electrifying. So imagine my excitement when I was offered the opportunity – rather privilege – to be editor of South Africa’s first high-end Indian fashion and lifestyle magazine.

Shah Rukh Khan Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan became nostalgic as he remembered his late father on his death anniversary on 19 September. “Where shall I find you now, in which garden can we sit? Where might you and I chat for a bit?

My father’s barsi today. 31 years without him,” tweeted the 46-year-old. Shah Rukh recently fulfilled one of his father’s wish by visiting Kashmir. The superstar was there to shoot Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan, and shot in Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Srinagar for it. In the film, Shah Rukh Khan plays an army officer named Samar, and he is paired opposite Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

Deepika Padukone Actress Deepika Padukone is honoured to receive the Smita Patil Memorial Award, and says such awards make her feel confident about her choice of work. “She’s (Smita Patil) someone whose work I admire a lot and the fact that I have got this award at such an early stage of my career, definitely makes me feel like I must be doing something right,” Deepika said at the awards. “It gives me the confidence to go ahead and choose the kind of films I have been doing and believe in the kind of roles that excite me,” Deepika, a model-turned-actress, started her film career with Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Her acting skills have been appreciated in the film circle, and she has won awards too. Deepika says actors don`t work for awards, but if their hard work fetches them one, it`s a great feeling. Asked if she hopes for a National award, she said: “That’s every actor’s dream. When you do a shot in front of the camera, when you are working, that’s not what is in your mind, you are not working to win the award. But at the end of the day when you finish a film and put in all the hard work, of course you want all the awards and if there is a National award that comes my way, most definitely.” Deepika’s forthcoming films include Kochadaiyaan, Race 2, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Ram Leela.

Nargis Fakhri says she was never inclined towards acting, but the beautiful script of Rockstar, her debut movie, propelled her to change her mind. “I wasn’t supposed to be an actress, but when I heard the story of Rockstar, I was like ‘Oh my god! I so wanted to do this’. (So) acting happened by accident.” The 32-year-old, who played Ranbir Kapoor’s love interest in Rockstar, was recently named the brand ambassador of HCL Infosystems`s computing products. She feels God has been very kind to her on the professional front. “I always feel that God has blessed me with many good things in life and he gave me so many wonderful opportunities in my life. I never say no to adventure and this is the reason why I was not able to say no to my debut film, because the story was beautiful. When you feel something in the heart, then you can’t say no (to it),” she added.

Actor Vidyut Jammwal turned into a real-life action hero when he managed to nab two thieves who broke into his house.“A couple of thieves broke into his house assuming that the house was empty and unattended.

Vidyut was inside and came to investigate when he heard a sound coming from the living room,” a source said. “On seeing Vidyut, the intruders attacked him with the intention of injuring him.

But they couldn’t succeed,” the source added. The Force actor is trained in martial arts, especially Kalaripayattu. The source also revealed that after the brawl with the thieves, he reported them to the police and had them picked up from his house.Vidyut’s official spokesperson confirmed that the incident did occur.

Bollywood’s topmost actress Vidya Balan, who has been in a steady relation with UTV CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur, is all set to say ‘I do’ this year. And if the reports of the power couple’s wedding are to be relied on, the marriage might happen by the end of this year. After publicly announcing her relationship with Siddharth last year, Vidya was often seen with her beau in private parties and making trips for holidays abroad. Last heard, the couple bought a posh love nest in a Mumbai suburb close to the sea.

However, the lovey-dovey duo is yet to make a public announcement of their rumoured wedding. Yet, sources close to Vidya and Sid have revealed that the couple is focusing on final preparations of the marriage which might see the day of light in December 2012. Well, congrats to the couple for the good news and we just hope that these two won’t put us off by starting another round of acceptance and denials just like how Saifeena did.

Tusshar Kapoor Tusshar Kapoor, who was reportedly upset with actress Sridevi for her remarks on the remake of his father, Jeetendra’s 1983 film Himmatwala, says his reaction was misunderstood. “Sometimes misunderstandings happen, but that’s not what I meant. I only showed possessiveness over the film, I liked her a lot in it. I am no one to be upset with somebody who is so senior, so popular, such a big legend,” the 36-year-old said here.

Himmatwala also starred Sridevi in it, and is now being remade by Sajid Khan, with Ajay Devgn and southern actress Tamannah in lead roles. Asked about the remake, Sridevi had commented that the film was no Mughal-e-Azam, a comment that reportedly left Tusshar miffed. In response to Sridevi’s comment, he had said that it is not good to run down a film that gave her a standing in the industry.

Meanwhile, Sridevi is gearing up for her big screen comeback with English Vinglish.

Sheryln Chopra It was probably a long time coming. Sheryln Chopra, 25, has become the first Indian to pose for Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine. Expectedly, the move has catapulted the Bollywood starlet to the limelight in a way her handful of appearances in mostly forgettable films couldn’t.

She was also a contestant on the Indian version of Big Brother in addition to some modeling assignments. Promoting the November spread, Playboy.com included a teaser stating,“Coming soon to Playboy magazine and Playboy.com, a historic nude pictorial of Bollywood sensation Sherlyn Chopra, the first Indian woman

Parineeti Chopra Parineeti Chopra is rumoured to have found a new love. The Ishaqzaade Girl, according to the grapevine, is dating Manish Sharma, the man who directed her in her film Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl.

While Parineeti, sometime back, was romantically linked to Uday Chopra, Manish too was having a steady affair with a colleague until Parineeti came into his life. Pari and Manish often spend quality time at various nightspots and restaurants in Mumbai. Spilling more beans to a national daily, a source said, “Both of them are foodies and are often spotted at a Bandra eatery.” Apparently, Parineeti, who features in Manish’s upcoming film, accompanied him to Jaipur for a recce in July this year. Preity Zinta Preity Zinta found a perfect mini version of herself in her niece Maya for a role in Ishkq In Paris. Preity had initially launched an online search for a young girl with a dimpled right cheek, who could play her younger version in Ishkq In Paris.

Maya, who is Preity’s brother’s daughter, flew from Los Angeles to Paris to shoot for the film. “Maya is very young, so she didn’t really care much about acting. For her, it was more of an adventure. She was more than excited to be part of her aunt’s film. From the professional point of view, she was extremely nice to work with,” director Prem Raj said in a statement. Ishkq in Paris is not just Preity’s comeback film, but also marks her foray into film production. It will release on 2 November.

SALAAM miss chopra” (SIC), Salman tweeted. ‘In My City’, featuring international singer Will.i.am, is produced by RedOne and Brian Kennedy. Close on the heels of Saif and Kareena’s marriage, when someone inquired about the elite guests who would be included in the list of invitees of Salman Khan’s wedding, the actor shocked everyone by saying, “When I get married, I am not calling anybody”. Shell shocked as the attendees were, Salman dropped another bomb which directly cast doubt on the much touted Saifeena’s wedding all together. Farewell Prabuddha

Noted fashion photographer Prabuddha Dasgupta, who died in August, pursued a variety of photography projects and was considered a major photography talent in India.

Rags to riches

W

hen news of Michelle Obama wearing Bibhu Mohapatra’s dress at the Jay Leno show reached the sleepy town of Rourkela, it was a reason for a collective high in Odisha.

Speaking from New York, Bibhu still gets goosebumps when he recalls how his family reacted to the news.

“I had sent them a clip so that they could watch the show. Later, when I called them up, I was pleasantly surprised to know that there was a gathering at home. There was a frenzy and for a moment, I felt as if I had missed out on someone’s birthday. It took some time for me to understand that they were all rejoicing the fact that the First Lady of the US had worn my creation,” says Bibhu.

This, however, doesn’t mean that everyone back home understands international fashion trends. “When

my mom was alive, she had once seen a photograph of a model in one of my outfits and said that the lady doesn’t wear clothes where she needs to and instead has a tail sweeping the floor!” says Bibhu, fondly laughing at the innocence that gave birth to such a comment. “I come from a very humble background. My father, who is an engineer, still can’t understand how one can make a livelihood by being a designer. When they read about me in magazines, their reaction stems out of pride and joy and not from an understanding of my creations,” he explains.

But for the man himself, Michelle Obama wearing his creation is a reason for pride. “She is super real. She has a trained eye and knows exactly what looks good on her. I knew she would be taking my dress on her trip to the Olympics. Before she appeared on the Jay Leno show, I got a call from her staff at the White House saying: “Watch out for the show. You’ll be happy”.

I’ve already dressed quite a few celebs but there is something different about Michelle Obama. Her reach is huge. Even her staff understands what her support means to me and my fellow designers. I haven’t met her as yet but I’ve heard that she has said that she feels cute in my dress.”

As he speaks about the Obama connection, one wonders how he stays grounded without succumbing to an overwhelming sense of pride that comes with dizzying success.

“That has a lot to do with my family. I distinctly remember my struggle days. I had followed my brother from Rourkela to Kolkata. I used to stay in a cheap hotel behind Chowringhee. Peeling paints, common toilets with creaking doors that had eroded on the sides and bedsheets that weren’t washed for weeks — our hotel resembled an unclean hospital ward.

The size of the room was barely that of the desk I now have in my New York office.

The whole day, my brother and I would roam around Kolkata and by the time we returned to the hotel at night, we were half-dead.

Soon he speaks about the first time he was supposed to travel to the US. “I woke up at 5 in the morning and went to the Visa office so that I would be the first one in the queue. That was in 1995 and I still hadn’t even seen an aeroplane before. Both mom and dad came down to Kolkata to see me off. The night before I was supposed to leave, my dad sat me down and shared with me a lesson of life: “If anyone does anything for you, remember it. Don’t measure what the person did just remember the contribution”.

That, Bibhu feels, has kept him rooted. “I have often seen my father sit up in bed in the middle of the night wondering how to pay his staff when he ran his own company. My mother was very supportive and would insist that he pay his staff instead of saving for us. Today, whatever values I have inculcated, is because of them.”

Regrets, if any, are that of not being able to take his mom to the US. “My mom passed away after having spoken to my aunt about how excited she was

to visit me in New York. Later, I told my dad to visit me but he said he would feel horrible to go to New York now that the person who really wanted to go wasn’t around,” his voice trails off.

ut before he allows emotions to choke him, he talks about his recent tryst with Hollywood star Glenn Close. “She has worn my clothes earlier and last week, she came to get the fittings done. I have been inspired by watching her in movies such as Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liasons. The fact that someone like her comes to my studio makes me all the more humble. And then to be told that she and her husband want to shoot a video of creative people that includes me makes me even more rooted,” he says.

As far as his own roots are concerned, Bibhu is more than happy talking about his project with the Odisha government that taps his passion for using ethnic fabric to create something modern.

“I am involved in this project with the Odisha government to conceive a line of textiles. I had gone to Odisha on a five-day trip when I visited four or five villages that have 

their own styles of weaving. I am waiting for the first set of samples to arrive so that I can start work on using the ikkat weaves for creating something modern,” he offers.

hile talking international trends, what does he think has been most hyped? Pausing for a moment, he says, “I think, it is the association of the colour black with edginess. I love black but an all-black attire doesn’t mean being edgy for me. I like to play with light and shadow.” And what is his definition of being sexy? “A mysterious sophistication is what I’d call the ‘right sexy’. It empowers a person. A ‘wrong sexy’ tag would go for overt explicitness. When I dress someone, I don’t make her a different person.

Instead, my dresses bring out more of the person.”

Having courted so many Hollywood celebs, doesn’t he aspire to design for

But Bibhu is a huge movie buff and back in New York, whenever his professional appointments in the evenings fall through, he invariably watches an Odia or a Hindi movie. “The standard of Odia movies has gone down from what it was in the late 60s or early 70s.

I got hold of this old video of an Odia song, Nida bhara rati, and watched it. It was so beautifully picturised.

The young blood needs to revive that spirit while shooting contemporary Hollywood movies.”

But that will take time and before it happens, Bibhu will be returning to India in October. This time around he wants to get some of his creations for sister Lopa, who was his first muse.

“The last time she wore my dress, she was all giggly even though most parts of her body was covered. It covered more than what a sari does.” This time around, he will get something else and as always, gift-wrap it with love.

When did you know you wanted to be in the fashion industry? I have always been passionate about fashion but the thought of making it a career struck me in my first year of college while I was interning with Indian Cosmopolitan.

Time of the writer Shubnun Khan talks creativity, teaching and the concept behind her book Onion Tears.

One of the most visually reflective writers to come out of recent South African memory, Shubnum Khan, has an uncanny ability to transpose past events and place them in current socially inclusive contexts, something which is both a marvel and somewhat comes out of necessity to see herself reflected in the literature medium. We spoke to her about Indian writing, creative processes and participating at Time of the Writer.

T

ell us about what initially influenced you to become a writer and your early experiences with books? When I was little, my sister would take me to the local library. Every night she would read to me from Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl.

I would sit enthralled as I heard about the saucepan man and the magic farawary tree. Thirteen years later, I found myself at the library again when I had given up on studying architecture, fine art and then visual art.

I was at my wits end and took up a job volunteering at the library. Being around all those books reminded me of

how much I enjoyed reading and then I took up a degree in English and Media and started pursuing my Masters in Creative Writing. The rest, as they say, is history.

Lets talk about Onion Tears and how did the concept and the idea of the book initially come about? Onion Tears is a novel about the love and losses of three generations of Indian Muslim women living in South Africa. I never planned to write a novel like this; I thought I would have written something more funny with talking cats and invisible worlds. But, in retrospect, I realise my mother had six older sisters and

amodaPEOPLE I have three and it seemed inevitable that I would write about the pain and joy of this community. Indian women are so dear and work so hard; they are stories waiting to burst onto a page with their cooking and heartaches and hard work.

You have always emphasised the idea of exploring identity, why do you think this issue is important in South Africa today? I think it’s always important to explore issues of identity.

It is so telling of histories and contexts and states of nations when we discuss issues of identity. It is a life long struggle of everyone. We always see ourselves in relation to our parents and our children and society, and religion and culture and, in my case, being Indian and African. It’s overwhelming. To think about it and to explore it through literature is to take a step into understanding yourself.

What do you think of the image of Indian women in South African? Is it directly reflective of how Indian women actually are? As with most identities, it is never static and I would never say Onion Tears is representative of all Indian women in South Africa. This is exactly why each woman in the novel is so different from the other.

You write both fiction and journalism. How do you manage to transition between the two mediums?

I often think that failed journalists go into fiction writing and failed fiction writers turn to comfort in journalism.

In some ways they are the same – you look for a story and you write it with a beginning, a middle and an end.

Of course the way you do it is different. Journalism requires a certain technicality and feverous dedication that I did not think I was suited to. On the other hand fiction writing requires patience, reflectivity and even a level of messiness that I enjoy. I mainly write creatively now but if I do write feature pieces, it’s mainly from a reflective point of view. In the few journalistic gigs I’ve done, I’ve seen the kind of life you have to lead and I’m still deciding if that’s for me.

We see a lot of younger women in South Africa getting their writing published. What do you think this means for the future of local writing?

In all fields it seems that increasingly young people are achieving success. I take this as a positive sign that the fresh perspective of youth is finally being encouraged and appreciated. The women’s perspective is one often fraught with emotion and pain and often ignored. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the

literature powers in this country shift from old white men to young black women.

There are not many recognised Indian writers in South Africa as one would hope. Where do you see the future on ‘Indian writers’ in South Africa?

Increasingly, I believe it is very difficult to label writers as Indian or any other form of cultural classification. While my novel and previous novels by Indian authors like Ronnie Govender do focus on the Indian culture very closely, other new Indian authors do not. Hamish Hoosen Pillay writes crime fiction, Azad Essa focuses on political discourse in South Africa. So I wonder if there is a future for the ‘Indian’ writer in South Africa when increasingly we see in this country how similar our narratives are becoming.

Surely as our cultural pot melts further, we will have ‘South African’ writers.

eing the younger daughter of actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita – not to mention sister to the famous Karisma Kapoor – it would seem obvious that Kareena’s family would groom her for the spotlight. But this was quite the contrary with her father disapproving of women entering the acting profession because he believed it conflicted with the traditional maternal duties and responsibilities of women in the family. The objection resulted in a dispute between her parents and ended with her mother leaving the house with Kareena and Karisma. After her parents’ separation, Kareena was raised by her mother, who worked several jobs to support her daughters until the eldest daughter, Karisma, debuted as an actress in 1991. Kareena, however, did not make her acting debut until 2000 when she starred in the movie Refugee. Even though the highlycommended Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham became one of Kareena’s biggest commercial successes to date, the road to stardom was not an easy one.

confess: I have always had a secret yearning for Bollywood hair.

Throughout my preteen years, I would go to sleep every night with the wish that I would wake up with a long, luxurious, thick, jet black shining sheet of hair. I thought that if I had the hair, then everything else would fall into place—my clothes would look better, my friends would marvel at my silky locks, and the boys would flock to me in droves, just as they did for the Bollywood heroines. Alas, I woke up every morning disappointed, my mop of short, springy curls.

Fifteen years later, I still coax my curls into a two hundred degree straightener and brave the perils of the sadistic round brush just to achieve the Bollywood ideal. But sometimes, when my straightening iron has burnt the back of my neck or I have just hit myself in the head with my brush, I stop to wonder why I and millions of other South Asian women strive for such an unattainable standard.

I mean, we all know that Bollywood hair is gorgeous—that sheet of silkiness cascading down a Bollywood star’s back is what enhances her beauty. But why is long, straight hair revered so much?

Why are other, equally beautiful types of hair so rarely represented in Bollywood? And furthermore, why is long hair revered as ‘good’, while short or curly hair is seen as modern, immature or rejecting Indian ideals for the Western ones? How did such hair bigotry arise in film culture?

Everywhere I turn, I see examples of hair stereotypes in Bollywood. In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a teenaged Kajol is allowed to cavort with boys and sport a cute bob, but Sharukh Khan only falls for her when she has traded in the Polo sweatshirt for a shalwar kameez and has grown her hair out to more ‘acceptable’ lengths.

Even Gurinder Chadha’s Bollywood satire Bride and Prejudice picks up on hair discrimination, portraying the daring city girl Indira Verma in a short, curly bob, while the more modest Ash

wears her hair traditionally long and straight. Of course, she is the one who gets the guy in the end.

erhaps the inherent association between long, straight hair and goodness can be traced back to India’s great religions. In Hinduism, disheveled hair is considered inauspicious and is only worn in times of great sorrow.

Hinduism also reveres hair as a life force representing the power of the natural world; long hair signifies vitality and life. The view of hair as a natural life force is echoed in Sikhism, whose devotees believe that God created hair to cover and protect the brain from the natural elements.

Hair, referred to as Kesh, is one of the five Ks of Sikhism—the five symbols worn

by Sikhs who have been initiated into the Khalsa, the body of adult Sikhs. Hair is regarded as a symbol of holiness and strength, and cutting one’s hair is seen as violating natural law and refusing to accept God’s creation as He intended it.

These beliefs have had an inevitable impact on Bollywood, where long, straight, neatly kept hair is equated with piety, tradition and goodness, while short hair symbolises just the opposite– unreligious, modern, ‘bad’ girls who have forsaken South Asian traditions for

Western culture. Thus Indira Verma’s short, curly do in Bride and Prejudice represented her modern, Western ideals, while Aishwarya’s long locks hearkened back to religious and cultural traditions.

Not surprisingly, the movie portrayed Ash as the clear good girl of the two.

Thankfully, this type of hair bigotry is changing. While in the 80s, Parveen Babi’s long silky hair sparked a style craze among Bollywood devotees, dhakdhak girl Madhuri Dixit turned the long-haired ideal on its head by sporting a short, curly do and inspiring a nation of teenagers in the 90s. However, Madhuri was one of the few successful actresses who could get away with short hair.

So it seems that I am doomed to continue cursing my straightener every morning and only letting my curls out at night. But when I finally get my turn in front of a Bollywood camera, Ash better watch out—I may just be hiding a pair of scissors in my shalwar kameez.

Know your purpose – know your goal. Stallone’s whole life was about overcoming odds – doctors pulled him out in an emergency birth with a metal tool but he survived. He knew from the

but if something isn’t working, it’s okay to try different ways to get what you want.

Make decisions based on your ultimate goal, not on the pain of present circumstances. He was starving, broke and couldn’t afford heat in his apartment. His wife was constantly screaming at him. He refused to get a job because he knew he would get ‘comfortable’ and not pursue his dream.

He wanted to stay hungry – Stallone felt his hunger was his only advantage. One day, just to stay warm, he went to the public library. He found an Edgar Allen Poe book and it inspired him. He was so broke that in order to survive he had to sell his most loved possession, his dog. He sold it for R250 to a guy at a liquor store.

He cried all the way home.

Get inspired. Get it done. Get it ‘out there’ and start trying to make it work. Stallone was watching a boxing fight on television – Ali versus Webinar.

That was his inspiration for Rocky.

Stallone wrote the entire first Rocky movie in 20 hours straight and tried selling the script to agents but they turned him down.

Clarity of purpose. Knowing what you really want and ignoring temporary pleasure/pain to get it He kept trying to sell the script, all the while still broke and starving. Finally he got offered R225 000 for the script but they didn’t want him to star in the movie.

So Stallone turned down the offer.

Success will come. It’s inevitable if you (in the words of Rocky) “keep getting back up!”. They finally offered him only R315 000 for the script and he could play Rocky. They only spent R8 million to make the movie and it grossed R18 million. The first thing Stallone did was to go back to the liquor store and buy back his dog. He paid the man R135 000 and giving the guy a part in the movie Rocky.The dog Buttkiss in Rocky is Sly’s real dog.

So there you go, if Stallone’s Rocky Balboa success story doesn’t inspire you, I don’t know what will!

am Christian. He is Hindu. Growing up in the same neighbourhood, we had always known each other but it wasn’t until our teenage years the interest stirred. At the beginning, I brushed him off quite a number of times but his determination to win my affection eventually grew on me until I just couldn’t resist anymore.

Singled out

People often ask me: “But didn’t you know that religion would one day be an issue?”

The answer to that is simple: “Of course I didn’t!” I never thought he would one day be the father of my children. I never imagined he would turn out to be my soul mate.

Mid-2010 marked our 11 year anniversary together. The road along the way was paved with its fair share of criticism, remarks and ‘God won’t approve’ anecdotes. Our first child was born when I was quite young – we were unplanned and unprepared – not just for the baby but for the family interference that soon followed. The pressure for us to marry soon became too intense for me to handle and I was determined to live my own life regardless of what our families said. My family has always been open-minded about our relationship but his family, being old-fashioned in their beliefs, was not as accepting. The stares at family gatherings would burn holes into my face but I was very diplomatic in handling the situation, although I would be lying if I said that every second at those events didn’t seemed like eternity. Some family members would openly voice their opinion while others would just gossip idly among themselves.

Taking a stand

In 2005, we made the decision to move away from our home time. When we decided to have another baby six years later and hundreds of kilometres away, I expected less family hassle as we had already been through this before. I also expected the distance to count in my favour. But, I was wrong and if I thought

the situation couldn’t get any worse, it did!

Infact, I was hit with remarks. Although the interference got worse, I had grown up and was able to handle the situation with much more grace. No more screaming matches with his family on how I should raise the children. No more arguments on celebrating Christian holidays with my family. I guess you could say we both grew up.

Worth the fight

We currently live in a beautiful town in the Eastern Cape, raising our two amazing,

and very blessed, children. He is insistent on raising the kids in the Hindu faith, which works fine with me because I haven’t been as active in my faith as I ought to be. I would prefer my kids to grow up with a good sense of religion – regardless of what the religion is – rather than no sense of belief at all.

He doesn’t dictate where I hang out, with whom I choose to be friends, and he respects that I keep a Bible within arm’s reach. I have contemplated, on many occasions, just running off to a court house and signing a marriage certificate.

But I realised something – after 13 years, two children and building a home together – I don’t need a marriage certificate to call him my husband. He fulfils that role every day. As a woman, I will forever long for the day when I get to wear a glorious gown and flash my happiness in a decorated venue filled with the love of family and friends. But it’s a small sacrifice to make in exchange for the blessings that so abundantly flow through my life.

I am Christian. He is Hindu. And it is what it is! I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Flashback Shyama was born Khurshid Akhtar in Lahore, British India (now in Pakistan) on June 7, 1935. She was a Bollywood actress. Director Guru Dutt gave her the stage name Shayama by which she is credited in her movies. She had starring roles in Guru Dutt’s classic Aar Paar and later in Barsaat Ki Raat which was perhaps her best performance.

few years ago, my Aunty Meenal gathered the clan for a family viewing of her daughter’s wedding pictures. I couldn’t wait to relive the extravaganza, where my relatives and I hoi-hoi-hoi’d into the early hours with endless parties, dances and ceremonies. So imagine my face freezing into a horrified smile as I was handed one disastrous photo after another. Here, the groom was reluctantly pulling on his bride’s sari a la Bollywood blockbuster; there, the obligatory cupped-hands mehndi picture, surrounded by gaudy saris and votive candles. What happened to the beautiful day I remembered? How did it turn into this clichéd pastiche of bad Bollywood movies?

Unfortunately, many desi wedding photographers enter the trade with no real training or passion for the business,

using it as a way to make a little extra money on the side. This means that they share the same old-school philosophy develop a variety of stock poses and then use them at every wedding from here until eternity. But that doesn’t mean that you should be one of their unlucky victims.

When embarking on the quest for a wedding photographer, ask yourself these five questions: Does the photographer balance his/her artistic sensibility with your needs?

This may be the biggest hurdle to overcome when deciding on a photographer for your wedding - finding someone who has their own unique style but doesn’t put their vision of the wedding ahead of your own. When my husband and I were searching for the

right photographer, most of the ones we met seemed to lean toward one extreme or the other. Either they had a stock of tired poses that they pulled out for every wedding, or they had an overblown sense of their own artistic vision that seemed to trump any ideas we had.

When you interview potential photographers, specify your needs exactly.

Are countless family pics obligatory?

Make sure they are comfortable with that requirement and is not focusing on artistic photos of the cake when he should be lining up Aunty Seema’s tribe for Family Photo #485. (And tell them the cast of characters ahead of time, so no VIPs are missed.) Do you want your photographer to take numerous candid shots throughout the day?

Make that clear so your photographer can take advantage of good lighting conditions and beautiful backdrops, instead of waiting for your directions.

Finally, if your photographer is not familiar with desi weddings, be sure to give your photographer a primer ahead of time. An unseasoned photographer could miss important moments if he doesn’t know what to expect.

Does the photographer take a good balance of candid and posed pictures?

While your photographer should be comfortable with taking innumerable family photos to make the guests happy, the candids he takes will really capture your memories. I can look back at my photos now and see the exact expression on my father’s face when he first saw me in my wedding sari, or my husband’s eyes light up when he hit the dance floor. Make sure you view not only the best of your photographer’s portfolio, but also a few weddings from start to finish. This way you can see his mix of posed versus candid shots to get a good idea of whether he has what you are looking for.

Also, if you’re going with a company that offers multiple photographers, study the portfolio of the specific photographer who will do your wedding so there are no surprises.

Will the photographer let your personality shine through?

It is important that your photographs reflect your personality as a couple, not just the creative sensibility of your photographer. View a wide variety of your photographer’s work, and look at the locations and poses of his different wedding shots. Do they all look the same, or do they each have different moods? Do you get a sense of each couple by looking through their photographs? Are they playful or glamorous? Formal or casual?

Our wedding day schedule was completely packed—we went from photos in a picturesque town square to the wedding ceremony at the mosque to another round of photos to the reception.

Whew! The moments we spent with the photographer were some of the best moments of the day—he worked hard to blend into the background, giving my husband and me some much-needed private time and taking some beautiful candids in the process.

Another thing to consider is whether the photographer has worked with your videographer before. Your wedding will require a partnership between the two; the videographer has to have his bright lights in order to get a good video, and the photographer has to take advantage of moments when the spotlights are off to get some stunning pictures.

If the two have worked together before, they have probably already established a good give-and-take pattern. If not, ask your photographer if he has worked with other videographers and if he has a strategy for “sharing” you as a couple.

His answer will help you determine how flexible and adaptable he is to different situations—and how he deals with the snags that inevitably come up along the way.

I then asked for the digitals, only getting printed those that I liked. This method brought the costs down considerably and ensured that the photographer was at my disposal to take as many pictures as we wanted for the duration of the wedding.

Also ask your photographer what his policy is on staying late and taking extra photos. As desi weddings invariably start late, you want to make sure that your photographer isn’t a stickler for time and doesn’t plan to charge you by the minute.

However, do create a schedule ahead of time to avoid headaches. Try to create realistic time frames for events and discuss them with your photographer before your wedding day. Of course the day always changes and that is actually part of the fun—a good plan just lets you have a reference point.

Good wedding photography is a gift you give your future self—a gift that will have more power and bring you more joy over time.

However, many photographers are becoming savvy to the South Asian wedding market and are more than willing to adapt their pricing to fit your

Colours are used to express thoughts, energy, emotion and many other things. Colours are often referred to as cool and warm. Try to ascertain the purpose of the room before deciding to go for either warm or cool colour.

For instance, social rooms such as dining rooms, living rooms, or kitchens fare better with warm colours. Studies, hallways and bedrooms are calmer areas and look better with cool colours.

No matter which colour you select, make sure to add contrasts. Painting the entire room from ceiling to the floor in a single colour will give a very monotonous look. Painting the trim is the ideal way to add contrast without painting a big section of the room a different colour.

The finish of the paint also contributes equally to the end result. You can choose between texture, matte or gloss finish. If you would prefer to create a more dramatic feel in the room, try a bright gloss finish. A matte finish reflects less light and hence reduces the glare and ‘drama’. You may also opt for semi-gloss or semi-matte finishes – or why not be bold and combine gloss with texture or matte with texture.

amodataste Samoosa making 101 For samosas you want to fry, use Filo Pastry and for samosas you want to cook in the oven use Puff Pastry.

This recipe will make enough pastry for 24 samosas and you will need: • 225gm. plain flour • 2 tspn. salt • 2 tblspb. vegetable oil • 80 ml warm water.

• Mix flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well into the centre and add the oil and enough water to make a firm dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and roll into a ball. Cover in plastic wrap and set aside at room temperature for 30 minutes.

• Divide the pastry into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and roll out into a circle of 15 cm. Divide this circle into two equal pieces with a knife.

• Brush each edge with a little water and form a cone shape around your fingers, sealing the dampened edge.

• Fill the cases with a tblpns of your chosen mixture and press the two dampened edges together to seal the top of the cone.

• Deep fry the samosas in hot oil until crisp and brown • Take out and drain on a paper towel.

Serves: 6 Preparation time: 20 minutes You will need • 175g blackberries • 50g caster sugar, plus an extra 1 tbsp • 6 tbsp brandy • 1 bottle chilled of Champagne

Champagne velvet Method 1. Set aside six of the blackberries for decoration. Place the remaining blackberries with the caster sugar in a saucepan.

Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved, then simmer for five minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce has thickened slightly and is syrupy.

2. Sieve the blackberry syrup over a bowl, gently pressing with the back of a spoon. Discard the fruit pulp. Chill the syrup.

3. Place a little of the syrup on a saucer and the remaining caster sugar on another saucer. Dip the rim of each of six champagne glasses first in the blackberry syrup, then in the caster sugar.

4. Blend the brandy with the remaining blackberry syrup and pour a couple of tablespoons of this into six Champagne flutes.

Top with the chilled Champagne or sparkling wine. Serve immediately.

Tagliatelle with roasted peppers and basil purée Serves: 4 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes You will need • 40g fresh basil, stalks removed • 175ml extra virgin olive oil, flavoured with basil • 1 tbsp sea salt flakes • 200g pomodoro tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, cut in half • 115g roasted red peppers from a jar, cut into slivers • Freshly ground dried green peppercorns • 500g tagliatelle • 250g edamame beans 4 tbsp pine nuts, toasted • 50g Parmesan, shaved • Rocket leaves to serve Method 1. Purée the basil in a blender with seven tablespoons of the olive oil and a little salt.

2. Heat the rest of the oil in a pan, and add the tomatoes. Season with salt and ground green pepper and remove from the heat after 30 seconds. Add the peppers and put to one side.

3. Meanwhile, cook the tagliatelle in a pan of boiling salted water, until just cooked, for around seven minutes. Add the beans for the last minute. Reserve five tablespoons of the cooking liquor and drain the pasta and beans.

4. Add the tomatoes and peppers, the reserved cooking liquor and the remaining oil and toss together. Or simply add the cooking liquor and oil to the pasta and serve, adding the tomatoes and peppers on top. Scatter each serving with pine nuts and Parmesan, and spoon over a little of the basil purée and a grinding of pepper.

5. Serve and enjoy!

Share the love this summer with these romantic dishes...

amodataste Serves: 2 Preparation time: 15 minutes, plus 4-24 hours to stain the salmon You will need • 1x 250g pack of vacuum-packed beetroot, drained • 12 chives • 8-12 walnut halves • 1 tbsp walnut oil • ½ tsp sherry vinegar • Sea salt flakes and freshly ground pepper • 120g smoked salmon • 2 tsp crème fraîche • 2 sprigs of dill

beetroot-stained smoked salmon with walnuts Method 1. Take one beetroot and slice it into thin rounds. Put the salmon on a plate (if it is already sliced, then remove the plastic sheets interleaving the pieces, but arrange the slices so that they are evenly overlapping). Grind over a little pepper and lay the beetroot over the top. Cover tightly with cling film and put a second plate on top to weigh it down. Refrigerate for up to 24 hours (at least 4 hours).

2. Cut the rest of the beetroot in half, then slice into half circles about as thick as a pound coin.

3. Slice the chives finely on the diagonal. Break the walnuts into three or four pieces each.

4. Mix the sliced beetroot halves, chives, walnuts, walnut oil and sherry vinegar. Season well with salt flakes and pepper. (Up to this point can be prepared 6 hours ahead).

5. Just before serving, peel the beetroot circles off the salmon.

Arrange the salmon, crumpling it slightly into a nest, on one large or two individual plates. Spoon the salad in a pile on top. Drop a dollop of crème fraîche on top, and break off tiny fronds of dill to scatter over the salad.

Chocolate chilli truffles Serves: 8 Preparation time: 5 minutes (plus 3 hours chilling time) Cooking Time: 5 minutes You will need • 200g dark chilli-flavoured chocolate • 150ml double cream • 2 tbsp lavender honey • 50g salted butter Method 1. Put all the ingredients in a small heavy based pan, and melt over a low heat. When almost melted, add three tablespoons of boiling water and stir until smooth.

2. Pour into a large cereal bowl and refrigerate for three hours.

3. Form teaspoon-sized balls and dust with twice-sifted cocoa powder.

4. Chill until ready to serve.
