Sonder A Retina Publication

Glossary sonder n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

“The eyes are the windows to your soul.” -William Shakespere.

Chapter 1 - Why Eyes

eyes?

T

his publication is based off of the idea that everybody has a story worth telling. The title name of the magazine was chosen as “Sonder” because it means that everybody has a unique story. Although this word is not considered a real word (not in the dictionary), it is still widely known. I like photography in general and I figured what better way to use that to tell interesting stories. The concept of using people’s eyes as a subject and not their entire face came from my personal understanding of how much emotion and expression can be visible in eye contact. I believe that everybody’s eyes reveal a story about them whether they like it or not. It is our innate tendency to involuntarily reveal our emotions through our eyes. In this age of technology, its things like this that reminds me of how human we are. The reason you will only see the subjects eyes and not their face is also the curiosity factor of it. This enables my readers (you guys) to focus straight on the eyes, therefore communicating my concept of relating stories to eyes. When you read these stories and look at that person’s eyes, a sense of relativity occurs from time to time. What I mean to say is, you can understand that persons story in a different and more personal perspective when you look into their eyes. So, I will be photographing people eyes (preferably diverse eye colors) and asking them rare questions on life such as; what do you fear the most?, How do you percieve death?, What is your biggest weakness?, and What is your current struggle? The individual’s answers to those questions would be their image description. There is also a color directory, which talks about the reason why eye colors are the way they are. - Martin Paul (Author)

What do you fear the most? Why? Why you got to ask me that? It makes me uncomftable. It has to be snakes though. And you know what sucks? Jayme (roommate) has a massive snake. Not afraid of heights, not afraid of anything else, just snakes. How do you percieve death? I believe that death and time are hand in hand. I also believe that time and purpose are a alot of our missions in life cause things change over time. In the subject of death, we only have a certain amount of time in this particular lifetime, so my personal belief about death is that when my time comes or anyone that I know dies before myself, it is right...and it was supposed to happen. I say this because they either finished their purpose or rather did what they needed to do on this earth, in this time and space. What is your biggest weakness? Is it plural? As in weaknessess or just weakness? Hmm honest truth, my biggest weakness would be disbelief in my capabilities and negative thoughts about myself. That’s what I struggle with the most but I combat it pretty well with my mental hard headedness.

Color Directory In green eyes, the stroma contains a small amount of melanin which provides a light brown hue that mixes with‌ well, what exactly does that brown light mix with to create green light? The answer: blue light in the eye is generated by a phenomenon similar to the one that turns the sky blue. The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by tiny particles floating in a liquid solution. The fiber structure of the stroma scatters light in a similar way, tending to scatter lower frequency light more than higher frequency light. So, in the case of green, the eye contains no blue pig-

In hazel eyes, the stroma contains a moderate amount of melanin, giving a light brown hue with occasional sections of green and yellow. Because of the moderate amount of melanin, a good portion of light is scattered back into the atmosphere by the stroma. Hazel is a beautiful mixture of brown and green and this eye color looks breath-takingly good.

In blue eyes, there is no melanin present in the stroma. The stroma is essentially colorless until light enters and is then scattered and reflected back into space. This is why the color of blue and green eyes depends on the quality and quantity of light available in a room. This phenomenon of material appearing to have a certain color while no pigmentation of that color is present is called structural coloration, and it’s awesome. It occurs in beef, berries, butterflies, and more.

In brown eyes, the stroma contains a high concentration of melanin, which absorbs most light and creates a dark brown hue. The most common eye color in the world is brown. It is a strong and rich color and it is associated with earth and thus, things like simplicity, creativity and positivism are some things that you can always find in people who have such brown eyes.

artin Paul, the content developer for this magazine, originally created Retina Publication to document stories of individuals. The first volume of this publication is Sonder, which are stories behind people’s eyes. Martin was born and raised in Hyderabad, India. He came to the United States in 2012 to pursue media studies. He is currently about to graduate from Full Sail University with his Bachelors in Media Communications. So far, he has used his skills to create content such as, journalistic videos, photo shoots, websites,

publications, and project plans. He has a strong interest in design and conveying intriguing messages through that. This publication is a good example of using design to tell meaningful and suspenseful stories. He has just begun getting his foot into the digital publishing world and he encourages his readers (if they are interested in more of his work) to look forward to future publications as well as his website.
