JANUARY 9–JANUARY 15 NATIONAL PIZZA WEEK

Dig into mmm! Celebrate with a pizza loaded with pepperoni—America’s favorite topping, per a YouGov.com survey. To get the fun started, we asked Nick Banker of Upper Crust Pizza in Akron, Ohio, winner of the 2021 International Pizza Challenge’s Pizza Maker of the Year, for advice. His top tip? “I prefer old-world pepperoni, or ‘cup and char’ pepperoni. They curl up into crispy cups inside the oven and add a nice crunch to your pie.” Try Battistoni Cup & Char Spicy Pepperoni or Hormel Cup n’ Crisp Pepperoni (at supermarkets). For more ways to celebrate, check out the pizza party on page 28.

Whatever your resolution, the key to success lies in how you phrase it, say researchers in PLOS ONE. In their study of 1,066 people, those with approach goals (which involve introducing something new into your life) were more likely to achieve them than those with avoidance goals (which involve quitting something). “Approach-oriented goals give you clear instruction on what to do,” says researcher Per Carlbring. “If your goal is to stop eating sweets to lose weight, you’ll likely be more successful if you say, ‘I’ll eat fruit several times a day’ instead. You then replace sweets with something healthier, which probably means you’ll lose weight and keep your resolution!”

Anthony’s $1 Thursdays raise money for people in need across the community

After asking his Facebook followers to donate $1 to help a friend, Anthony Talley was inspired to create a weekly campaign to help hundreds of people in his community find their smile again! nthony Talley’s heart sank as he waved goodbye to his former classmate. Chance had brought the two LaGrange, Georgia, natives together that morning when they’d run into each other in town, but as his friend shared all the struggles she’d been facing, Anthony felt a tug on his heart to do something. God, what do you want me to do about this? he prayed. I can’t just walk away and not do anything. That night, Anthony was suddenly awakened with the answer in his heart and pulled out his phone to post on his Facebook page in the early hours of that Thursday morning. I know someone who needs a hand, and all I know to do is campaign for her, he wrote. If you could give $1 to help her have a better day, please send it to my CashApp. Within 15 minutes, Anthony received a shocking notification: The same friend he had made the post about had been the first to donate. I know she doesn’t have the money, but she gave anyway, he thought, awed by her generosity. This is what it’s all about! By the end of the day, Anthony had $120 in donations to buy her groceries, gift cards and gas for her car. Seeing her smile and the light in her eyes when she received those gifts, something clicked in Anthony’s mind. It was the love that we showed her that made the difference, he reflected. Maybe I can keep this up. I’ ll call it $1 Thursday and help even more people.

Put your spare change to good use!

Next time you grab a soda at a vending machine, stock the coin slot with the change from the bottom of your purse and stick a note on the machine saying, “Have a treat on me!” to give the next person a surprise when they come to buy something. Have more loose change to use? Leave pennies— heads side up—in parking lots or on the sidewalk for other people to find.

a kindness 2 Gift ‘coupon’!

If you have extra coupons while grocery shopping, leave them around the store for other customers to grab and use when they check out. For even more fun, create your own “coupon” by taping a note to a dollar bill that says, “Good for $1 off!” and leave it on a product in the store to bring a smile to the lucky shopper who finds it.

3Donate a buck!

When the cashier at the checkout line asks if you want to donate $1 to the cause that store is supporting, say yes. Or if you’d rather choose the charity, visit DollarDonations.org and choose from the charities listed—like T1International, which supports people with type 1 diabetes, or Water.org, which supplies people around the world with clean water. You never know how far your $1 contribution could go.

Skin-softening almond oil seals hydration into cuticles, protecting them from the dryness and peeling that lead to hangnails.

Thanks to its hydrating vitamin E content, avocado oil restores moisture and softness to dry, cracked lips. Even better? The oil’s antioxidants soothe cracks, while its fatty acids speed skin healing. ■ TRY IT! Saturate a cotton swab with avocado oil (like Chosen Foods 100% Pure Avocado Oil, Target. com), sweep onto lips and let absorb into skin.

■ TRY IT! Pour 1 ⁄4 cup of warmed almond oil (like SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Sweet Almond Oil, Walmart.com) into a bowl. Soak nails in the oil for 10 minutes, then massage the residue into cuticles.

Fade age spots with pomegranate oil Ellagic acid, a mild bleach-like compound in the fruit’s oil, diminishes dark spots on the face, neck and hands. Plus, the oil’s vitamin C content sloughs off dead, discolored cells for added skin-brightening benefits.

Reverse hair thinning with black cumin seed oil

■ TRY IT! Dip a cotton swab in pomegranate oil (like Leven Rose 100% Pure & Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil, iHerb.com) and dab onto spots; let absorb.

Antibacterial agents in black cumin seed oil dissolve impurities on the scalp that can clog and weaken hair follicles, causing fallout. Plus, its unique compounds encourage growth so hair looks thicker over time.

The miracle oil that works triple duty!

■ TRY IT! Massage 2 Tbs. of black cumin seed oil (like Nature’s Way Black Seed Oil, Vitacost.com) onto a damp scalp. Let sit 15 minutes before rinsing.

Compounds in the oil (we like Heritage Store Castor Oil, Ulta.com) increase blood circulation and ease swelling. To do: Rub a pea-size amount onto veins until absorbed.

Here, 3 genius ways nourishing castor oil can help you look 10 years younger—in a flash It ‘shrinks’ veins!

It erases dark circles!

It thickens eyebrows!

The oil’s moisturizing fatty acids “plump” thinner under-eye skin so shadows recede. To do: Dab a drop onto the undereye area twice a day.

By boosting blood flow to follicles, the amino acids in the oil help promote hair growth. To do: Dip a cotton swab into the oil; swipe on brows nightly.

That’s why CDC researchers found that stroke risk was 53% lower in folks who drank at least five cups of water daily compared to those who drank two cups or less. Try filling a pitcher with five cups of water in the morning with the aim of finishing it by the end of the day. How your phone can help: With a free app like Plant Nanny Water Tracker Log, every time you log a drink, it helps a plant in your virtual garden grow!

Gab on the go Next time you’re on the phone catching up with your sister, pace around while you chat. In a JAMA study, working 41 ⁄2 hours of additional activity into your week (that’s about four 10-minute walk breaks a day) reduced stroke risk by 46%. Researchers say even modest amounts of activity keep a lid on fibrinogen, a clot-causing blood protein.

Whether she’s stomping grapes or doing a Vitameatavegamin audition, YouTube clips of I Love Lucy are guaranteed to elicit belly laughs. That’s good news since Japanese scientists found that women who laughed daily were 62% less likely to suffer strokes than those who didn’t. A chuckle combats bloodpressure spikes that can damage blood vessels feeding the brain. Animal lover? Search for “funniest cat (or dog) videos” instead.

Order takeout this way After you dial up your favorite restaurant, ask for a whole-wheat pizza crust or sandwich roll instead of white bread. In a Harvard study, stroke risk dropped by 40% in women who ate three servings of whole-grain foods per day. Experts say the fiber and phytochemicals in whole grains lower levels of artery-clogging LDL cholesterol while fighting inflammation that contributes to clots. —Melissa Gotthardt

fe e l g r e a t Found! Secrets to better night vision You love visiting family and friends for cozy dinners and movie nights this time of year. And thanks to a few tricks that give your night vision a boost, you’ll stay even safer on the road! Wear sunglasses at night As we age, “contrast sensitivity”—the ability to see subtle shapes like curbs and dividing lines in dim light—declines. Couple that with shorter days, and night driving becomes trickier. The fix: Don sunglasses for 20 minutes before hitting the road, then take them off when driving. Pilots use this trick to fly safely at night since it helps your eyes quickly adapt from bright indoor light to dim outdoor light. And it works just as well for night driving too, leaving eyes up to 80% better adjusted to the dark landscape.

Savor a ‘hot chocolate bomb’ Dropping a trendy, marshmallow-filled chocolate ball into hot milk is more than just a fun upgrade on hot chocolate. Turns out, the delicious sipper sharpens your sight too! British research suggests enjoying 11 ⁄4 oz. of dark chocolate (equal to about one chocolate bomb or threequarters of a chocolate bar) before you hit the road boosts contrast vision in low light within minutes, with results that last up to 21 ⁄2 hours. Bonus: Flavanols in chocolate increase blood flow to eyes. This helps you detect motion, such as another car changing lanes, nearly 33% faster.

Sing along to the radio Loudly singing “On the Road Again” or other up-tempo hits behind the wheel spurs a notable boost in contrast sensitivity as you drive, according to research in the Journal of Vision. The little boost in excitement you get from singing triggers a flood of norepinephrine, a brain chemical that fine-tunes eyes’ ability to detect subtle differences in shades. —K.E. Kluznik

Extra-cozy ways to dodge diabetes!

You love curling up on the couch with a good book—but did you know that relaxing in specific ways balances your body’s blood sugar–regulating mechanism, warding off diabetes? It does! And steadying blood sugar reduces the risk of COVID-19 complications by 63%. To get the benefits… Sleep in Permission to hit snooze: Snuggling under a toasty comforter for an extra hour in the morning lowers the risk of diabetes by 30%. Those extra Zzzs help you make up for sleep you lost from long days of merrymaking during the holidays. That’s key, report Australian investigators in the journal PLOS ONE, since 7 to 8 hours of shut-eye helps your body clear excess glucose from the blood.

Eating a handful of chestnuts, spiced pecans or other nuts daily delivers a dose of healthy unsaturated fat. Penn State researchers report that this decreases insulin resistance and cuts diabetes risk.

Sip a hot toddy It may sound counterintuitive, but sipping your favorite alcoholic beverage three times a week cuts diabetes risk by 32%, a Danish study found. Alcohol spurs a greater output of the hormone adiponectin, which helps cells use glucose more efficiently.

Daydream On a chilly day, letting yourself relax and daydream about last summer’s sunny beach trip does wonders for your blood sugar. Scientists at Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri, say thinking happy thoughts for 20 minutes a day—no matter what they are—tamps down production of blood sugar–disrupting stress hormones, heightening blood-sugar control by 33%.

Dim the lights Turning off extra lamps 3 hours before bed lowers levels of insulin resistance markers by 30% by morning, a study in PLOS ONE found. “Light at night may suppress the hormone melatonin, which affects insulinsecreting cells,” says study coauthor Phyllis Zee, M.D., Ph.D. A dim room spurs melatonin release, helping cells work better. —K.E. Athlete’s foot?

Chilly temperatures and dry indoor heat can leave the skin on your feet (and especially your heels) painfully cracked. To soothe discomfort within a week, treat yourself to an “aspirin pedicure.” Canadian scientists say this quickly smooths skin and reduces the risk of future cracks by 65%. Credit goes to aspirin’s exfoliating salicylic acid, which dissolves dead skin cells. To do: Mix 5 crushed aspirin with 1 ⁄2 tsp. of lemon juice and 1 ⁄2 tsp. of water, then massage into rough spots. Rinse after 10 minutes, then buff with a pumice stone and moisturize.

Thick socks keep our feet toasty on frigid days, but they can also trap moisture, creating the perfect environment for fungus to flourish. The fix? Oregano oil. A Romanian study revealed that when dabbed onto affected areas using a cotton ball twice daily, the oil’s natural antibacterial properties kill fungus as effectively as pricey over-thecounter products.

Blisters? To calm a blister from party heels or stiff boots, use calendula cream. The marigold

extract’s anti-inflammatory compounds tame irritation, speeding the healing of damaged skin, a study in Advances in Dermatology and Allergology found. Apply twice daily and cover with a bandage until healed. To dodge future trouble, apply paper tape to sensitive areas. Spa fix for swollen ankles If your ankles are puffy after a busy day on your feet, try a spa-inspired remedy called contrast soaking: Plunge your feet into cold water, then hot water, for 60 seconds each, repeating for 8 minutes. British scientists say the big temperature swings boost blood flow to quickly flush trapped fluids.

Yes, you can Science proves these simple tricks can stop the clock—and even rewind signs of aging!

Stay strong by slowing down Next time you’re carrying groceries, picking up the laundry hamper or putting the last of your holiday decorations away, try moving as slowly and smoothly as possible. University of Utah studies show using your muscles for just 10 minutes daily halts (and even reverses) muscle shrinkage, so long as the motions are smooth and deliberate instead of jerky or rushed. The result: You’ll boost strength by 60% in three months. OR SAVOR SCRAMBLED EGGS! Noshing on a protein-rich breakfast, like a two-egg omelet or Greek yogurt pancakes, stops muscle shrinkage in 72 hours and increases your strength by 25% in three months, suggests a study in The Journal of Nutrition. The reason? Protein fuels muscle growth more quickly and effectively if it’s eaten early in the day.

Couch time makes you feel 7 years younger! Permission to kick back and scroll through cheery memes or cute cat videos! Doing so for 20 minutes a day makes you feel seven years younger, sharper and more energetic. Scientists at California’s Loma Linda University say daily smiles and giggles stimulate the release of a hormone (BDNF) that revitalizes your nervous system for a head-to-toe youth boost.

age in reverse! Melt a menopot with a snack bar Ever wish there were a shortcut to fitting back into your old jeans? There is! It sounds too good to be true, but University of Hawaii scientists say eating 1 ⁄2 cup of nuts daily puts slimming on autopilot: It speeds belly-fat breakdown by as much as 59% and trims up to 6 inches off your waistline in six months. Thanks goes to nut compounds (alphalinolenic acid and oleic acid) that cut hunger pangs by 55% and activate liver enzymes that help burn belly fat for fuel. OR BLOW OUT A CANDLE! Before each meal, take 2 minutes to focus on your breathing: Inhale deeply, pause, then exhale slowly through your mouth, as if gently blowing out a candle. This simple move helps trim up to 400 calories off your daily diet and 4 pounds off your waistline every month. Harvard University researchers say deep abdominal breathing works by waking up the appetite control center in your brain.

Fade wrinkles with cheery chats Staying in touch with fun friends at least once weekly, whether you call to catch up or grab coffee in person, keeps your skin looking up to 14 years younger. What’s more, it’ll cut the risk of premature wrinkling and sagging in half. Brigham Young University scientists say regular contact with people who lift your spirits lowers production of the skin-aging stress hormone cortisol by 33%. OR TRY PINE EXTRACT! Research in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology found supplementing with 60 mg. of the pine bark extract Pycnogenol daily reduces the inflammation and oxidative stress that contribute to premature skin aging.

Maximize your memory

Sharpen your senses

with card game nights

with snow-day fun

Tackling crosswords or sudokus for hours isn’t the only way to sharpen your smarts. Playing a card game or board game twice weekly (whether online or with loved ones) gives you the focus, concentration and memory of someone nine years younger. Plus, it cuts the risk of future memory loss by 48%, say French scientists. Challenging yourself keeps your mind’s memory center energized and increases the production of the brain-nourishing hormone acetylcholine.

Just 15 minutes a day playing in the snow with your grandkids or stretching helps you see and hear as clearly as you did 12 years ago. Plus, it’ll cut your risk of future vision and hearing trouble by 55%, Cleveland Clinic scientists say. Gentle motion encourages the flow of oxygen-rich blood to eye tissues and ups the production of a hormone that rejuvenates inner-ear nerves.

OR GET YOUR CITRUS FIX! Vitamin C, a nutrient that abounds in citrus foods, fuels the formation of healthy new brain cells and clears away plaque buildup in the brain. In fact, JAMA research found taking 1,000 mg. of vitamin C daily cuts dementia risk by 42%.

OR SNOOZE! You’re three times more likely to have great vision and hearing if you nap a few times a week, Cornell scientists say. Sleep relaxes tiny blood vessels so nutrients reach your eyes and ears.

S LI M M I N G SUCCESS

Top diet There’s an exciting, science-backed twist on the keto diet that has the world buzzing. And it’s no wonder: Women who once struggled to lose an ounce on traditional plans are transforming their health and blasting up to 42 pounds in 30 days. Even famous keto experts are switching to the approach‚ and they’re suddenly leaner and have better blood work than ever. The secret? Instead of replacing carbs with lots of fat, you replace them with lots of lean protein. “Protein is the foundation—how you keep satiated and how you’ll lose weight quickly,” according to Dr. Oz, who recently posted a rapid-results version of the strategy. It already has millions of fans. Give it a try, and get ready for “the best results you’ve ever had!”

O

IT WORKS!

n a keto diet, the aim is to reduce carb intake until you no longer make enough blood sugar to fuel your system, notes Duke University’s Eric Westman, M.D., author of End Your Carb Confusion. To compensate, your body will turn fat from fat cells and from food you eat into compounds called ketones, “which become your primary fuel,” he explains. This makes fat burning soar. Plus, lower blood sugar sets off a healing chain reaction that can lead to big health gains.

Jennifer lost 73 lbs!

After a mild heart attack, Jennifer Floyd was put on a strict plantbased plan. As with most diets, she barely lost an ounce. A year in, she asked about keto. “My cardiologist said it was too much fat,” recalls the Texas mom, 54. Luckily, Jennifer found a keto coach with a higherprotein, lower-fat approach. With her doc’s blessing, Jennifer began tucking into eggs, protein shakes and protein-topped salads. Her metabolism caught fire. “I was losing with zero hunger.” Down from a size 18 to an 8 during pandemic lockdown, Jennifer says, “Some people teared up when they first saw me. I’d been in bad shape and turned it BEFORE around. My heart is strong. I’m loving life!”

The surprise hitch: “Burning more fat doesn’t automatically mean losing body fat,” cautions Dr. Westman. “Overdo fat from food, and your body uses that fat to make the fuel it needs.” In other words, slice after slice of bacon and cheese are quickly burned as fuel, “and your body won’t need to tap into its stored fat at all.” The good news is that making lean protein the star of your low-carb meals solves the problem and sets you up for other huge advantages…

These meals kill hunger Here’s the gist of Dr. Oz’s protein-fueled plan for rapid results: Build each meal around 30 to 40 grams of protein, unlimited nonstarchy veggies and a little optional good fat. Skip carb-heavy foods, except an optional serving of low-sugar fruit and 1 ⁄2 cup beans/quinoa daily. Any snacks should be small with 12 to 15 grams of protein. We’ve got ideas to inspire you here

BREAKFAST Stir 1 Tbs. no-sugar-added protein powder into 1 cup Greek yogurt; top with 1 ⁄2 cup berries.

protein is digested compared to carbs or fat. So more protein means hundreds of extra calories are effortlessly incinerated each day! Plus, getting more protein provides a flood of amino acids proven to offset age-related hormonal changes and muscle loss that make it harder to slim down over time. A Duke University team even has evidence that eating about 120 grams of protein a day doubles weight loss after age 60. It’s really no wonder proteinpowered low-carb plans have so much momentum going into 2022. “It’s a kind of a super-keto diet,” says DietDoctor.com’s Andreas Eenfeldt, M.D., a leading keto authority. He adds it’s “the most effective way to use keto we know of so far.” Real-world wow For years, Rhonda Roush tried to make healthy choices, but cravings for chips and microwaveable junk got the best of her. Her weight crept to 283 pounds; her reflux and arthritis grew severe.

Dr. Oz’s tasty guidelines make it easy to slim the high-protein way!

After commiserating with a pal, Rhonda says, “We joined our local TOPS support group.” Encouraged to choose a structured plan, “I wanted something simple,” recalls the Tennessee mom, 54. Since bread made her gain and fatty foods raised her cholesterol, she picked an exchange plan that called for five servings of lean protein, lots of veggies and modest amounts of fat and carbs daily. Rhonda’s group cheered her on as she found foods she loved that fit her plan—eggs, chickentopped salads, fish with veggies. “I just started to feel really good. No hunger or cravings, plus I was energized, my mood was better and my pain was going away.” Also gone: 121 pounds. “Focusing on protein nourishes my body and my spirit,” she says. “I’ll eat this way forever!”

HEALTHY LIVING

“Finally…I can Allison Webb-Hilgert’s life was consumed by asthma attacks, sinus pain, headaches, dizziness and congestion, until a surprising COVID-19 hack helped her heal—for good!

A

“I’m free of congestion, and my lungs no longer beg for air!” Allison beams

grew worse, Allison found herself stuck in a damaging cycle, regularly popping Benadryl pills before visiting friends and fearing the unknown allergens that might be lurking in their homes. But as she arrived home from her walk, frazzled and unsure of where to turn as her friend looked on with worry, she knew one thing: Something had to change.

A surprising remedy One day in November 2020, Allison was researching online for natural ways to boost her immune system amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, her concern for her health and safety as an asthma sufferer at an all-time high. Suddenly, she came across something intriguing on a blog. Others were posting about using hydrogen peroxide treatments via nebulizers to treat COVID-19 and ward off other viruses. I’ve never heard of this, she thought, diving into the research, which confirmed what she was reading. As she learned, hydrogen peroxide was well-known in medical circles as an “oxidative therapy,” which increases

How nebulized hydrogen peroxide protects against COVID “Hydrogen peroxide (HP) is a naturally generated antibiotic that can prevent and cure infections,” asserts Thomas Levy, M.D., author of Rapid Virus Recovery (free at rvr.medfoxpub. com). The challenge? Mainstream medicine sees HP as a disinfectant that’s not safe for internal use. “But quite the opposite is true,” he says,

adding that HP is ideal and safe for treating internal infections, especially those acquired via the respiratory tract. That’s because inhaling a fine mist of HP (done through an inexpensive nebulizer) can quickly eliminate pathogens in the sinuses, nose, throat and deep into the lungs. And nebulizing HP after exposure to COVID, or at the onset of initial symptoms, offers a quick, effective cure, he says. The reason, he explains: HP generates a chemical reaction that kills pathogens (leaving only oxygen and water in its wake).

Dr. Levy says small, handheld nebulizers (like Unoseks Portable, Amazon.com) deliver a finer mist that penetrates deeper into the respiratory tract. He advises using a standard 3% HP solution (diluted with saline if you have stinging in the nose), with the following protocol: For possible exposure, nebulize once as soon as possible for 2 to 3 minutes; for early onset of respiratory symptoms, nebulize 3 to 4 times daily for 10 to 15 minutes until symptoms dissipate. (As always, check with your doctor before trying any new treatment.)

Allison, totally out of breath and wheezing, grabbed her friend’s arm for support, fighting to catch her breath as the two friends made their way back to the house. I feel like I can barely breathe, Allison despaired, the gravity of her situation kicking in. From 2013 on, the St. Louis, Missouri, music teacher had been suffering from asthma and allergies that caused severe congestion and made it a constant struggle to breathe easily. Playing the clarinet and saxophone in her music classes became a struggle, and to make matters worse, she began experiencing crippling sinus pain, headaches and dizziness from the constant inflammation and pressure. Doctors prescribed her two medications, one in pill form and an inhaler—which became her constant companion—to treat her symptoms, but the unpleasant side effects weren’t worth the little effect that they ultimately had. Even better, when COVID-19 struck her household last year, Allison and her husband found themselves already prepared and on the road to fast healing, thanks to her new nebulizer routine. “The nebulizer and hydrogen peroxide were already part of my life, so when my husband and I were diagnosed, we just ramped up our usage to several times a day,” shares Allison, who suspects that the reason she and her husband did not suffer serious complications from the virus was thanks to her nebulizer. “I’m so grateful we had this amazing breathing treatment on hand. “Help! I’ve lost my sense of purpose!” If you’re feeling a bit unmoored, you’re not alone—in a new survey, 70% of folks over 50 said they don’t feel a sense of purpose. Here, easy ways rediscover your path

Turn off ‘busy brain’ Opening to our true sense of purpose is something we must

do intentionally, says expert Joyce Meyer, who advises spending time in prayer or taking a short walk in nature each day. These quiet moments, she says, invite introspection and clarity, plus calm our noisy mind so it’s easier to listen to the “heart cues” that direct us toward our higher purpose. Savor the past “As we age, our past becomes a treasure chest of clues upon which to build a forwardlooking purpose,” says expert William Damon, Ph.D. Look back on your accomplishments, as well as your regrets, and what you learned, he urges. “Thinking positively about the past is the path to purpose because it helps us build new visions of what’s possible based on a greater understanding of ourselves.”

Find your spark Expand small joys “Most of us think we need to have some grand project, but there are small purposes that have huge impacts,” says Selig. Simply focus on the moments that might be clues to something bigger. “For example, if a tiny act of kindness, like smiling at a stranger, lifts you up all day, it may be a clue that volunteering might be a bigger way to fill you up. Sometimes it’s the most overlooked joys that lead us to our greatest purpose.” Pick your story Reading anything, from holy books to works of fiction, tends to make us feel more purposeful, studies show. “I personally love biographies,” reveals Selig. “A sense of purpose is built on

knowing who you are, and when we read about people overcoming the odds, we ask ourselves: ‘How can I conquer challenges?’ Reminding ourselves of our resilience keeps us motivated.” Let it transport you In the end, purpose is so powerful because it transcends the self, observes Damon, who says simply exploring your talents can help you feel more connected to something bigger. “Getting lost in a hobby boosts creative ‘flow,’ when we’re so engrossed in what we’re doing that we lose sense of time.” Indeed, he promises anything that moves you to feel awe, be it admiring your grandchild’s artwork or gazing at the falling snow, helps you see just how connected you are to the larger world, reigniting purpose.

Our expert panel Meg Selig, author of Silver Sparks: Thoughts on Growing Older, Wiser, and Happier, writes the popular Changepower blog at PsychologyToday.com.

Press ‘reset’ Give yourself permission It may seem hard to define, but “purpose” simply means having a goal or intention that’s meaningful to you—and rediscovering yours is shown to make you happier and even boost your health. “It can be challenging, especially as we get older and kids leave the nest or we retire, to find our own purpose beyond being a mother or co-worker,” says expert Meg Selig. “That’s why it’s so important to give yourself permission to say, ‘Now it’s time for me.’ Letting yourself explore your ‘encore purpose’ is the first step in starting a new chapter.”

GOOD TIMES GUIDE

Delight with Serve up fun by the slice at a make-your-own-pizza party, just in time for National Pizza Week (January 9–15). With a DIY pizza bar, fun sips and flair, it’s the perfect way to celebrate!

Kick off fun with a pizza bar

Add a little pizzeria pizzazz Give plates pizza parlor charm with gingham tablecloth–inspired napkin toppers. To do: Pleat a gingham napkin accordion-style. Next, cut a rectangle of red felt to fit around the napkin and hot-glue the ends together. Stack a circle each of green and red fabric and a green felt star, then glue together and glue the stack to the cuff. Add the napkin and a mini pine cone to the plate to finish.

Wow with cookie slices These treats made by cookie artist Jennifer Covington (@CakeWithASideOfCookies on Instagram) are sure to impress! To make: Cut sugar cookie dough into triangles, bake and let cool. Top with red icing, leaving the “crust” plain. Pipe on squiggles of melted marshmallows to form “cheese.” Top with Oreo O’s cereal for “olives “and leaf-shaped sprinkles for “basil.”

Make guests feel like gourmet chefs with a build-your-ownpizza bar, like this one styled by Sarina Kinnunen (JoyInTheCommonPlace.com). To do: Tie red and white balloons to a string, then tape to wall with paper pizza slices and a banner. Next, top a table with drinks, bowls of pizza toppings and foil containers filled with pizza dough.

a pizza night! Refresh taste buds with a zesty citrus signature sip The perfect cocktail to pair with pizza is light, not too sweet and altogether refreshing, like the popular Aperol spritz! To start, pick up Aperol, an Italian liqueur with a mildly bitter citrus flavor that will bring out the savory flavors of pizza. To make each spritz, pour 3 oz. of sparkling white wine, 2 oz. of Aperol and 1 oz. of club soda into an ice-filled glass, then garnish with an orange slice and fresh mint sprig. Tip: Can’t find Aperol? Opt for Campari, a more widely available Italian liqueur with a similar flavor profile to Aperol.

Get creative with classic and clever toppings The best part of a pizza party is discovering new flavor combinations when personalizing pies! At her party, Kinnunen set out help-yourself ramekins and bowls filled with classic toppings (like cheese, sauce, pepperoni and mushrooms), as well as unexpected selections (like pineapple, tomatoes and Canadian bacon). Some other fun ideas: roasted garlic, bacon, onions, herbs or shredded chicken. For topping IDs, jot topping names on paper triangles and glue to toothpicks, then stake into bowls.

3 tips for a fun evening

1 Bake the perfect pizza

Oven space is at a premium when it comes to baking up everyone’s pizza. The pre-party trick that allows you to fit multiple in your oven at once: Flatten pizza dough into 6" circles (which can fit two to a standard cookie sheet), then add the circles to foil takeout containers. Tip: Pop cookie sheets in the oven while it’s preheating, then add customized pies in their foil containers to the hot sheet and bake. The result? Crispy, takeout-worthy pan pizzas.

2

Infuse fresh-picked flair with a fragrant herb bouquet All it takes to wake up your dining table is a bold and beautifully scented bouquet made from a few handfuls of supermarket herbs and blooms. To create the display, fill a short red polka-dotted vase halfway with water, then add a few handfuls of textural herbs (like parsley) to the vase to form a rounded mound. Next, insert two handfuls of chives in the center of arrangement, fanning out the greens for a natural, wispy look. Add seven white supermarket blooms (like button mums or carnations) to the vase, one at a time, spacing evenly. To finish, set the vase on a wicker tray or charger. Tip: No red polka-dotted vase on hand? Give any old vase a coat of red craft paint, let dry, then use a white paint marker to add dots.

Play ‘Wheel of Pizza’

Get them giggling with a game that selects a special slice for everyone! Just assign each guest a number on a numbered spinner wheel (grab one from an old board game or try the Hand2Mind Four Color Spinner Wheel, $10, Amazon.com). Once pizzas are ready, have each guest place a slice on a plate at the center of table. Then everyone takes turns spinning the wheel to see what number they land on and whose slice they get to try!

3 Make use of leftovers

Though extra slices are delicious as is the next day, you can also cut them up into cubes and sauté in vegetable oil for croutons that pack a flavorful punch in soup and salad. Got extra dough? Roll it flat, sprinkle with sugar, top with sliced apples, brush with melted butter and bake at 400°F until golden brown for a tasty apple tart.

Relax & recharge in The latest trend in home and design? Creating a calming ‘book nook’ where you can unwind after a stressful day. Here, Pia Edberg, author of The Cozy Life, Life shares her easy how-to’s HAPPY HUES + PLUSH EXTRAS “Setting up a cozy reading retreat or book nook in a corner of your home is a perfect, easy way to escape the stresses of the world,” says Edberg. “It’s a place where you can go and feel instantly calm. When you only use this space to unwind, it creates a reminder and you’ll feel a visceral response in the body.” Here, an armchair is made even comfier thanks to a set of plush pillows and a soft throw. Adding a bookcase nearby and setting out a tray of tea completes the vignette. “Choosing warm hues for accents, like the oranges and reds here, uplifts.” Other ways to bring in color: Add supermarket blooms, artwork and baskets.

a reading retreat ! PRIVACY ‘WALL’ + MIX-AND-MATCH PRINTS You can create a peaceful reading nook almost anywhere, but a spot near a window with ample natural light fosters a good, relaxed mood, notes Edberg. No built-in window seat like the one shown? Edberg says tucking a chaise lounge or armchair near a window will capture natural light well. To make your corner even more secluded and peaceful, add a privacy screen (like 4-Panel Room Divider in Cream, $60, Walmart.com). More quick ways to up the cozy factor: Mix and match colors and textures with bright pillows and throws.

OMBRÉ DISPLAY + SURPRISING STORAGE “I love the idea of intentionally showcasing books in a pretty range of colors—this creates a visually pleasing ombré display,” she says. To get the look of this nook, paint bookshelves or a freestanding unit (like Room Essentials 5 Shelf Bookcase, $35, Target.com) a sunny hue; let dry. Next, arrange books together by color then showcase on shelves from dark to light shades, creating a gradient or ombré feel. Place a reading chair next to the shelf (pile on pillows and add a foot rest for comfort) along with narrow space-saving storage, like this old white ladder repurposed as a magazine rack. For extra flair, hang a piece of wall art and place a potted plant or two on a windowsill.

Your organi zed home

Easy ways to

slash your heating costs! Oil and gas prices have risen significantly since their pandemic lows, but you can stay warm without breaking the bank with these savvy tips

by ‘blanketing in’ air “Hot air rises, making your heating system work harder and your bill climb faster,” says Jack Miller of home improvement blog HowIGetRidOf.com. An easy fix? Clip blankets to curtain rings, then slide the rings onto tension rods placed between doors or hallways that lead upstairs. This keeps air from escaping up so it stays warm down below.

Supercharge your heater

Reduce hot water temps

with a quick vent dusting

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most households only need water heater thermostats to be set at 120°F to provide adequate hot water for dishes, laundry and bathing. But many manufacturers default them to 140°F. “Simply lowering it by a few degrees can slash up to 11% off your heating bill,” says Dallas HVAC expert Walter E. Bennett. “That’s up to $400 a year!”

Heating vents tend to attract dust, mini insulators that block your system from emitting heat. To clear them so your system runs efficiently, give radiators, baseboard units or forced-air vents a quick onceover with the vacuum hose when you’re doing the floors. Then wipe them down once a month with a scented dryer sheet—it keeps dust from settling and creates a fresh scent every time the heat kicks on!

by checking this setting

Spot drafts with incense Keep the thermostat low Even a small draft can raise the heating bill by 20%. To find it? “Light an incense stick, then walk around areas with common air leaks,” says Andre Kazimierski, CEO of Improovy.com. “If the smoke trail wavers, you’ve located the leak!” Just grab a bit of caulk or foam insulation to plug it instantly and start saving big.

SOLVE-IT-YOURSELF

Mystery

G

ood evening. I’m Craig Wayland, your host of Gimme the Money, the multiplechoice game show where contestants can win thousands of dollars! Our current champion, Harvey Patterson, has been on a hot streak, so let’s not waste any time. Are you ready, Harv?” Patterson nodded, his beady eyes darting back and forth as the lights came down. “The first category is past television shows,” Wayland continued. “First question: Who played the mother on Leave It to Beaver? Was it (a) Mary Tyler Moore, (b) Jane Wyman, or (c) Barbara Billingsly?” “C, Barbara Billingsly.” “That’s right—you just won another thousand dollars!” ayland pulled a card from Wayland a box in front of him, glanced at it and smiled. “I think this one is a little harder, Harv. Listen closely.” He read the question and choices. Patterson didn’t hesitate. “A.” “Right again.” The audience roared. “Our next category is science.”

Gimme the money

Wayland read the question and choices. This time Patterson said, “C.” “Correct.” Another card was pulled. “In the category world geography…” Again the question and choices were read. “The answer is B,” Patterson smiled. “You’re on a roll. But we have to pause now for a commercial break. Be right back, folks!” In the control room, Scott Brigham, the show’s producer, turned to Detective Sue Donald. “You see?” he asked. “On our show, when a contestant gets his third answer wrong, his turn ends and a new person comes on. This guy hasn’t missed a single question in six days. The odds of that are astronomical.” “You think he’s cheating?” “He has to be. And I’m afraid Wayland is helping him.”

“Come to think of it, I haven’t had my day”

“Wayland gives him the answers beforehand?” Brigham shook his head. “Impossible. Craig doesn’t know what the questions are until he pulls them from that box.” “Then how does he know which answer is right?” “The correct choice is underlined on the card.” “Then I don’t see how…” Detective Donald began, but the commercial break had ended. On set, Craig Wayland pulled another card. “Now the questions are going to get harder,” he said. “Algebra is the category.” He read the question and choices and waited as Patterson pondered his answer. “C.” “Amazing. That brings your total winnings today alone to $5,000. At this point,” Wayland said as he pulled a card from the box, “each question is worth $1,500.” He read the question. Patterson answered “B”— right again. This continued for the rest of the show: Wayland asked questions and Patterson got every answer correct. After almost 30 minutes, Wayland said, “I have your last

question for today in the category opera.” Again, he asked the question and Patterson’s answer of A was correct. As the show ended, Brigham turned to Sue Donald again. “I know they’re cheating. You have to prove it before the next show.” “That gives me all night to think about it,” Donald said. “No. We tape five shows a day. There’s a half hour break so Wayland and the contestant can change so it looks like a whole day has passed.” Donald sighed. “Can I go over today’s show somehow?” Brigham nodded. “I’ll have the technicians replay the tape.” Detective Donald reviewed the tape and smiled. “I’ll need some cue cards and a large black marker.” “What for?” “Tell Craig he is to read only what is on the cards. No improvising.” “You figured out how they’re cheating?” “Yes,” Donald said. “And this should prove it.” —Richard Ciciarelli Donald

Heavenly hope When Woman’s World reader Kelly McDermott was grieving the loss of her baby, she received comfort and peace from Heaven. She writes:

M

y husband and I were so excited when we found out we were expecting our first child. We began planning everything we would do together as a family. Yet, throughout the pregnancy, I had this unsettled, worried feeling. Many people told me it was just jitters of becoming a mom, and I tried to just enjoy my pregnancy. Our worst nightmare came true on a March day when I didn’t feel our baby kick. An ultrasound confirmed there was no heartbeat, and our daughter, Colleen Patricia, came into this world quietly as stillborn. We were shocked. Our world was shattered. I don’t know how we got through those dark days. Mostly through faith and time. People did not know what to say, so a lot was unsaid, which made Colleen’s death seem like a dark secret we carried. It was especially difficult for me at work as I am a physician and help people daily, but I could not help my own daughter.

I prayed for a sign— anything to let me know that Colleen was okay. Nothing happened for a long time. Though we went on to have three more children, the hole in my heart was still there.

“I suddenly started finding quarters everywhere!” One day, years after losing Colleen, I again asked for a sign. I even joked to send quarters from Heaven instead of the usual pennies because I’m frugal. A few days later, right after I received some good news, I found a quarter on the floor where I had just cleaned. I smiled knowing that Colleen was a part of it. I then started to find quarters everywhere—in pockets, on my driver’s seat, in hallways at work. The quarters always appeared after something good happened or an important decision had been reached. I don’t know why the angels took so long to answer, but I now know Colleen is watching and sharing in our lives.

ANGEL EXPERT SUNNY DAWN JOHNSTON SAYS… “It is common to feel like your world has been shattered when something that you care for so much is gone, especially a child. Having already experienced the loss of the physical life, when there isn’t a sign from the spirit world, it compounds the pain. What I have learned over the years is that it isn’t that the signs weren’t there before, it’s that when you are in that much grief, you simply don’t notice them. As time passes, your grief begins to lift and you are able to see, as in this case, the quarters that Colleen had likely been leaving all along.”

Instant aah… Take a moment to leave your worries behind and lose yourself in loveliness

Readers share little reminders of how much goodness there is in the world “IT FELT GOOD TO HELP!” I was in a rush to go to work, when I saw my colleague in the parking lot next to her SUV. It was a cold day, and she seemed to be struggling with the rear hatch of her vehicle, after having taken her wheelchair out of the back. I went over and she explained she couldn’t lower the hatch. I tried to force it but that didn’t work. We both needed to get to work, so I suggested that I call security for help, rather than leave her vehicle open. I stayed with her until security came. Security was able to lower the hatch so her vehicle was secure. She later emailed me thanking me for the help. It felt good to help someone in need! —Nancy B. Mike, Farmington, NM

“I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I’ll go to it laughing” —Herman Melville

“SMALL GESTURES CAN BRING BIG SMILES!” I was running errands and had a craving for an iced coffee. I stopped at my favorite drive-thru, and as I was paying, I dropped four one-dollar bills. But it’s impossible to open your car door when you’re so close to the building. As I was about to pull up to get out of my car to retrieve my cash, the woman from the car behind me noticed my predicament and came to my rescue. I was so thankful for her kind gesture. My day was brightened so much by her help! It’s not always the big gestures that make us smile, it’s the little things in life that add up. I know I will try to do my part to help others. —Cora Rowe, Wrightsville, PA “THERE WAS SO MUCH KINDNESS IN THAT ONE MOMENT!” I work as a cashier in a small department store, and most of our customers are senior citizens. Recently, I was serving an older lady, and unfortunately, her debit card wouldn’t work. She was quite upset and tried several times with no success. There was a gentleman in the next aisle who was watching what was happening. He came over and insisted on paying for her order and then walked away. The lady was overcome with gratitude. She got emotional, and tears started to roll down my own cheeks to see how grateful she was. There was so much kindness, gratitude and generosity in that one moment. —Karen White, Conception Bay South, NL, Canada

“Is that right? Sounds like I need lessons,” I shot back, meeting his gaze. Ben’s enthusiasm was contagious. He demonstrated, falling back into the snow, fanning out his arms and legs repeatedly. I joined in, fanning my own extremities as we giggled like kids. “For the full experience, you have to melt snowflakes on your tongue.” I followed Ben’s lead. “This makes me feel like a kid again.” “Right? Just good, old-fashioned fun.” Fun. The word echoed in my mind as one of my fairy godmother criteria. “This is the most I’ve had of that in a long time.” Alex frolicked around us, comically nipping at snowflakes. Ben helped me up so we could see our creations.

“So, snow angels are not only fun, but also beautiful,” I said. His voice was low as he answered me. “They aren’t the only thing that’s beaut…” In an instant, our moment was interrupted by a cry from our neighbor. “Hey, Ben—have you heard the forecast?” Ben grimaced comically at the interruption and called back. “No…what’s up?” “Tons of snow coming. Better head to the community center.” As it turned out, Ben was a storm volunteer at the condo’s community center. During heavy storms, the power nearly always went out, and since the center had a generator, everyone sheltered there for heat. “Gotta take off, Sarah—it was nice meeting you!” Ben said with a wave as he sprinted off with Alex. Sure enough when I got back to my condo, the power was out. I was sure to see Ben at the center if I sheltered there. Would we pick up where we left off, or was I imagining a connection? I stomped snow off my boots at the center door and took a deep breath when suddenly, I felt something wrap around my legs, trapping me in place. I looked down to a swirl of red dog leash. “Hey, Alex!” Then, I heard a familiar voice say, “I see Alex found you again for me.” “He captured me with his leash.” Ben said, “Good boy,” with his big smile, patting Alex’s head. “Now, where were we?” Ben asked, looking at me with those beautiful eyes. “Right: I was going to ask if you’d go sledding with me after the storm.” Instantly, I said, “Yes.” He was kind, thoughtful, fun and so handsome. What’s your favorite way to spend a snow day?

PERSONALIT Y INSIGHT

When the weather outside is frightful, we turn to the quieter, indoor hobbies that speak volumes about who we are. Read on to learn what your favorite winter-perfect diversion says about your innermost thoughts and passions

If you prefer…

Baking: You’re a serene mystery Equal parts art and science, your favorite snow-day escape is a testament to both your creativity and conscientiousness. Though your multifaceted nature and “whole brain” thinking make you a bit hard to read at times, one thing is for sure: You bake not only to lift your own mood but to sweeten the lives of everyone lucky enough to be in your inner circle.

Curling up with a book:

You’re a warm people person From passionate love stories to intricate mysteries, the books that populate your bedside table shed light on your emotional intelligence. Indeed, identifying with characters helps us “read” others in real life. Compassionate and open-minded, you know that every work of great fiction reveals a larger truth about the relationships that define us and that make your life so rich and fulfilling.

You’re an idealist When the forecast takes a turn for the worse, your resilient spirit takes a turn for the best. Your love of crafting reflects just how much you seek to beautify the world, one small step at a time. Whether you’re designing a pretty wreath or DIY-ing a cute birdhouse, you exude a sunny attitude warm enough to melt the coldest of hearts—and coldest of days.

Puzzling: You’re an imaginative seer Jigsaws and winter fit together like, well, puzzle pieces. And while your fondness for this pastime speaks to your detail-oriented nature, it also hints at your creativity. After all, folks with a vivid imagination often gravitate to this painstaking activity to help slow the racing thoughts that accompany an artistic temperament.

Catching up on TV: You’re a complex thinker Sinking into your sofa, and bingeing on your favorite shows suggests a fondness for serialized storytelling. In other words, watching a program unfold over several episodes shows that you prefer complexity over simplicity and likely favor multilayered antiheroes over cookiecutter characters. A smart cookie yourself, you often guess the ending long before the credits roll.
