HUMANE SOCIETY OF GROVE AND GRAND LAKE, INC. Letter from the President i know many who have adopted shelter animals for pets. the feeling of giving that pet a safe, healthy and loving home is amazing. but, the feeling that the animal gives back is priceless.

At the humane society of grove and grand lake we take pride in the health and care of our animals. our staff and volunteers at the second Chance thrift shop and the shelter are so devoted in making the lives of the animals the best they can be until they meet their forever family. ever since our inception (1984), we have been able to make a positive change in the lives of the unwanted animals in and around our community. the speed of our growth means that our existing facility is now insufficient to accommodate all the unwanted animals.

We need a new facility which will accommodate and keep our animals happier and healthier.

We envision this shelter to be around 12,000 square feet, with a park-like setting for adopters to enjoy and get to know their new forever family member.

Along with an extensive medical wing for veterinarians to come in and perform spay/neuters and other surgeries necessary, we would have an isolation area for sick animals and a separate intake area.

All of the dogs will have an indoor/outdoor run so they will not live outside in the elements. And we will have a play area for the cats so they can climb and play, like a cat should!

Ways for you to help a rescue animal… “think adoption first” and urge your family members and friends to come visit the humane society of grove and grand lake shelter or other local shelters.

Donate to your local shelter. Monetary donations are used locally and most private shelters do not get help from the AspCA or the united states humane society.

Volunteer your time, love and energy to your local shelter animals. pick out a favorite and give them that special one-on-one attention they crave and desire. Foster homes are always needed for our special needs animals too. please help us help you and our community. if we are able to keep the unwanted animals healthy and housed it will make our community a more desirable place to visit and live.

If they were human, we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write, the ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage.

A Memorial Tribute to Molly: (By Laura Roberts, Volunteer) There are many in the Grand Lake area who we are thankful for in their support of the Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake-from their donations to time spent and love shared. One special pup was brought to the Shelter. She was named “Molly.” She had not known love or kindness from a human, but Molly slowly began to trust us. She was allowed to stay up front in the office, and she came alive when allowed to be with other Shelter pups. She thrived in the role as a pseudo “Mom”, and was protective of small pups, helping socialize several.

Molly had found her purpose--all the while waiting for her Forever Home. Sadly, Molly became sick, one last time. In reflecting on Molly, she was already at her Forever Home at the Shelter. She brightened the day for all who knew her. We who knew her best are thankful for her.

We make mistakes; we feel we can't do enough; we go broke; we have too many pets at home; we rant out of frustration; we lose our tempers and get snappy; we have to reject people sometimes for the good of a dog or cat. We are not always likeable. What we do is draining—emotionally, financially, and physically.

Help for Our Long-Term Shelter Residents (By Stephanie Epps, Volunteer) When a shelter commits to being “no kill”, it is because we realize that every life is special. For a few, however, the shelter becomes a long-term home.

But living in a shelter is no substitute for a family.

Dogs crave that emotional connection of a pack or family. Every dog deserves that special person who knows that they sleep in a tight ball or like their food with a touch of broth in it. That intimacy with a loved one is lost in the shelter environment.

As shelter workers, we hope every animal gets adopted as soon as possible. We do not wish that a kennel life would be a substitute for a family, but often certain types of dogs seem to struggle to find homes. For example, older or shy dogs are less likely to adapt to shelter life. The noise and cold floors are very hard for these dogs to adjust to. Potential adopters for older or sky dogs are rare. Therefore, these types of shelter dogs, the ones that need a home the most, often wait for one the longest.

I want to mention some of our oldest shelter residents. They have no voice to explain their behaviors or reasons for not being adopted. But they are well known to those of us who spend a lot of time at the shelter, so I want to speak for them.

Let me introduce Ricky, Popeye, and Panda—three of our oldest but very special shelter residents that need a family to love and care for them.

Ricky came to the shelter at just two weeks of age in 2009. He is a chirpy yellow dog waiting to be noticed.

Ricky learns fast and is very outgoing.

Popeye is a black dog with a big bark. He came to the shelter in 2008. He seems tough because he is insecure, but with time to adjust, patience, and lots of love, he would bloom into a wonderful family pet.

Then there is Panda. Panda is one of four siblings brought to the shelter in 2011. The puppies were only 8 months old and not socialized to people. Panda is a beautiful border collie mix that needs training and socialization to the bigger outside world.

These special dogs are a few of the cases we hope to attract attention to. They are all sweet dogs waiting to be transformed into family pets. Anything you can do for these special few is greatly appreciated. Any seemingly small connection would mean a lot to every one of these dogs—a weekly visit, a walk on the leash, or foster care would progress these dogs to finding permanent, forever homes. Please consider these long-term residents if you visit the shelter.

They deserve that special person who realizes they are irreplaceable in our hearts.

The Drive to Save Lives – One Road Trip at a Time! on the shelter intake form, there is a blank space labeled “reason for surrender,” which describes in just a few short words, why an animal's owner has made the decision to voluntarily relinquish him/her to the shelter.

Sheds...Destructive...Barks...Can't keep in my yard...Digs...Divorce...New Baby...Moving...Boyfriend doesn't like...New Job...Allergies...Not enough time for...Too expensive...Too much work...Too old...Too many...Too big...Too small...My dog/cat got pregnant...Can't find homes for the puppies or kittens...And I don't want anymore! not included on this list are those animals that have been abandoned under darkness of night, abused, or discarded somewhere and are now homeless. For whatever reason, the grove humane society's number one responsibility is to now provide a clean and safe refuge for any homeless animal that has been able to find their way to our shelter until a loving home can be found. however, our shelter daily faces serious overcrowding with the number of animals being surrendered or abandoned and facing death because there is no room for them in our no-kill shelter. pet overpopulation is a serious problem in our communities. sadly, there is not a large enough population in our area to provide homes for all of the homeless animals that need loving homes. the grove humane society has entered into a Canine transfer partnership with the Animal humane society of golden Valley, Minnesota, in order to give these homeless animals a second chance at finding their forever home. every animal in our care deserves this opportunity. We are very happy to proclaim that we are saving lives – one road trip at a time!

We typically transport once a month transferring approximately 24 dogs with each transport. since the inception of this transfer program, we have saved the lives of almost 700 dogs. however, the costs associated to transport one dog averages $100 which covers the veterinary expenses, required health certificates, and the gasoline, food and lodging expenses for the volunteers who make this long road trip to Minnesota. the grove humane society relies on the support of our communities and individuals like you to care about what happens to homeless animals in this area. We must continue this “Drive to save lives” until we can declare pet overpopulation has been eliminated. please donate today to allow the grove humane society to continue our Canine transfer partnership. thank you.

“Three Kittens” - An example of how animal overpopulation works! the humane society of grove and grand lake's shelter currently has 48 cats and kittens waiting for homes to adopt a new feline family member. but, outside the grove humane society shelter, away from the desperate overcrowded situation within our shelter walls, a family doesn't have their cat spayed. she becomes pregnant; gives birth to five kittens.

“We gave the other two away,” the family says when they surrender the three remaining siblings to the front counter of the grove humane society. Meaning, two potential available homes for our shelter cats have been taken, and the number of shelter cats waiting for a home increases with the addition of three more kittens. this is how animal overpopulation works. simple math but where the numbers are the lives of homeless animals living in shelters. in reality, the numbers nationwide are tens of thousands of times larger. but the formula works just the same.

every new kitten added to the equation reduces the chances for others to find a home. even the ones who don't cross the threshold of our shelter door – the ones “given away” - reduce the number of homes available to adopt our shelter kittens.

Another victim in this cold mathematical formula are the scores of adult cats waiting in our shelter, who will be overlooked when the faces of these irresistible kittens peer out of the cages. According to one study, 84% of adopters want a kitten or puppy under one year old.

Adoption fees for our shelter cats are only $10, which includes the cost of the spay/neuter procedure and vaccinations, yet a large number of beauiful cats remain at the shelter waiting for loving homes. help us and every animal shelter reduce the number of unwanted litters. please have your companion pet sterilized to reduce the number of homeless animals.

Humane Society Statistics for 2012 Due to limited capacity to care for a dog or cat at the shelter we maintain a waiting list for the animals that need to be taken in to the shelter. if you know of homeless animals needing to be rescued, we recommend calling the shelter to put your name on the waiting list. We ask for an intake fee, as we are a privately owned 501c3 organization and operate soley on donations. intake fees help cover the cost of spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm check, feline leukemia check and the everyday care of the animals. it costs us approximately $100 per animal to transport or to get that animal ready for adoption.

Second Chance Thrift Shop the second Chance thrift shop exists for the benefit of the humane society of grove and grand lake, inc. our thrift shop is staffed by all volunteers who love animals and want to give their time to help the homeless, abused and abandoned animals in the grand lake area.
