We Are Special These featured animals may be older, or need a little extra help, or special understanding to be comfortable again in a home environment. Please read the brief description of each and consider opening your heart and your home to care for them. ISABELLA: I'm a beautiful, quiet girl who is blind in my right eye. I'm not very comfortable in my current shelter living arrangements as I use to have a quiet home life. The shelter staff and volunteers are wonderful at giving me extra attention and encouragement to help me understand how my home life situation changed so quickly. I'm beginning to settle in, but I very much want and need a person’s gentle touch, a warm lap to curl up on, and a loving home. MRS. PEABODY: Everyone just gushes over me and it makes me so happy. My people tell me what a sweet, special little girl I am - a young whippet mix, about 25 pounds of pure love. I was brought to the shelter with nerve damage in my front leg so severe that it could not be saved. Unfortunately I am also deaf and blind in one eye; but with all this tragedy, it has not adversely affected my wanting to live life to the fullest. I am currently residing at a foster home and have adjusted very well. I get along with all the other dogs in the foster family, so I feel that I can adjust to any new home situation quite easily.

pet me or to sit close beside you. The shelter thinks I'm about 11 years old, but I have the activity level of a much younger dog. I would love to go on walks but would equally enjoy just hanging out with my new people. Since I'm kind of set in my senior ways, it would be best if I was the only family dog. BUTCH: I'm a younger “old dog” about 7 years old. I sure have a happy-go-lucky attitude and am usually smiling from ear to ear. A loving touch and kindness is a new way of life for me. I may have spent most of my life alone, but I'm very calm and laid back. I like other dogs and would probably enjoy the company of one in my new home. I'm hoping for a family that will include me as part of the family. BO: Just look at me – I am a big gentle boy with an even bigger heart. It is apparent from my scars that I may have suffered mistreatment and abuse. Fortunately for me, I was removed from this terrible situation and now have been shown what love and kindness feel like and I'm thriving. Unfortunately, I am a senior dog, probably about 11 years old, yet I need a permanent home just as badly as a younger boy. I would make a loyal companion if given the chance but may be best if I was the only family pet.

NICKI: I am a very sweet affectionate girl who adores people. I know how to sit and how to melt one's heart as I lift my paw to say hello. I wag my tail real fast because I want to get your attention so that I can get you to

Volunteer Stephanie Smith – Dedicated to Helping Shelter Cats Volunteer Stephanie Smith comes to the shelter every Wednesday morning to clean cat kennels and to socialize our shelter cats. She arrives at 8:15 in the morning and stays an average of 3-4 hours, depending upon the number of cats housed in our cat room. Stephanie first came to the shelter in May of 2009 with her daughter Madizion who was 12 years old at the time. Madizion was on summer break and wanted to volunteer at the shelter; but because of her young age, it was a requirement that there be parental supervision during Madizion's volunteer hours at the shelter. As Stephanie and Madizion were both cat lovers, it was a natural fit for them to work with the shelter cats. Due to school commitments and developing allergies, Madizion has been unable to continue working in close quarters with so many cats. But Stephanie was hooked and has continued her dedication to helping our shelter cats. For each cat kennel, she provides fresh food and water, changes the litter, cleans and sanitizes each cage, and sweeps and mops the room. While she cleans each kennel, the cats or kittens get the opportunity to stretch their legs, sniff and play with other cats, and otherwise be the curious creatures that they are meant to be. Once their kennel is clean and they've had the chance to romp and play, Stephanie snuggles each one and places a kiss upon their heads before they are placed back into their kennel. Stephanie is a strong advocate for finding each shelter cat a loving

home. She faithfully works to get our cats and kittens ready for an easy transition from shelter life to an adoptable home. She knows all the cats by name and especially their personality. Her 13 year old son Maceon will sometimes join her at the shelter. While Stephanie is busy with her cleaning duties, Maceon will play and cuddle with each cat or kitten until it is time to leave. Stephanie and her husband Reid own Redemption Implements located in downtown Grove. Her family has 3 family cats at the home and one shop cat named Casanova (pictured) - all adopted from Second Chance Pet Rescue. All cats/kittens adopted from our shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated with age appropriate vaccines, vet-checked for good health, and microchipped. The adoption fee for a kitten less than 6 months is $25 and $10 for a cat/kitten older than 6 months. We have cats and kittens in all ages and colors - all needing a loving home. Please consider adopting a pet from Second Chance Pet Rescue instead of picking up a “free” dog or cat that will cost you so much more than our adoption fees.

Giving Homeless Dogs the Ride of Their Lives with PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin'® Program Every year, our rescue animal shelter receives more dogs (and cats) than we can possibly find homes for. The phone rings constantly with pleas from people who want to surrender their pet, have unwanted litters, or report abandoned animals that are in need of immediate help. It is a daily struggle as our shelter attempts to reduce the extraordinarily high number of pets that are relinquished to our shelter, while at the same time finding good homes for them. That's why we are very proud to be one of the newest shelter participants in the PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin'® program. Rescue Waggin' is a national program that transports adoptable dogs and puppies from shelters with high pet overpopulation and very few potential adopters to animal shelters elsewhere in the country where adoptable dogs are more in demand. Our area meets the criteria of severe pet overpopulation and has for many years now. Believe it or not, there are shelters around the country that have nearly eliminated the pet overpopulation problem in their communities through high sterilization rates of pets. as a result, there are fewer homeless dogs available for adoption, but plenty of people that are interested in adopting one. Our shelter has been preparing for months to participate in the Rescue Waggin' transport program. Kim Nelson, Shelter Director, and Stephanie epps, Board President, traveled to Dallas, Texas, to become certified in behavior assessment – a method for evaluating canine behavior to ensure dogs transported to other communities are safe, friendly, and ready for new homes. Our first Rescue Waggin' transport was in the summer of 2014 with a van load of beautiful puppies; the first transport of adult dogs was December 2014. Since being accepted into the Rescue Waggin' program, a total of 117 dogs/puppies from our shelter have been transported already to adoptable homes. This has been a long journey for our shelter and staff to prepare for participation in the Rescue Waggin' program, which is a life-saving program for the hundreds of homeless dogs in our area. Now, every few weeks, Kim and Stephanie evaluate and select adoptable dogs and puppies for Rescue Waggin' transport. as one of 79 shelter PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin' participants, we will also be eligible for grants, free training programs, and mentoring to improve our shelter facilities and operations. Since 2004, more than 80,000 dogs and puppies have been saved through Rescue Waggin'. To learn more about Rescue Waggin, as well as other programs that PetSmart Charities support, visit www.petsmartcharities.org or call 1-800-423-PeTS. It is our shelter's continuing commitment to put a STOP to the number of homeless animals in Northeast Oklahoma by educating the public on the importance of spaying or

neutering their pets and by offering affordable sterilization services through our weekly spay/neuter clinic. You can support this effort by contacting your city and county officials and community leaders requesting the enactment and enforcement of spay/neuter regulations to reduce the pet overpopulation crisis in our communities.

We recommend calling the shelter to put your name on the waiting list. We ask for an intake fee, to help cover the cost of spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm check, feline leukemia check and the everyday care of the animals. It costs us approximately $100 per animal to transport or to get that animal ready for adoption.

Happy Tails Adoption “Never Give Up Hope!” The definition of “Hope” - To want or expect something; to have a wish to get something - especially something that is possible or likely. A 9-week old puppy, discarded and left dying beside the road. A good Samaritan stopped to check on what he thought was a dead puppy until she moved her little tail. He swaddled the weak and dying puppy in a towel and immediately brought her to our animal rescue shelter. When she arrived, her little frail body was without fur and covered in open wounds. Her fate was uncertain, but the shelter named her “Hope” – praying that this young puppy had the will and determination to survive. Hope was immediately transported to our oncall veterinarians at Southwest City Vet Clinic where she was diagnosed as severely malnourished with demodectic mange – one of the worst cases ever treated by the vet clinic. After a few days, she was returned to the shelter for our staff to continue treating her open wounds with a medicated solution. But with the immense pain she endured during her daily treatments, our staff feared she would surrender her tiny life. Then amazing things started to happen for Hope. She was moved to a foster home where she continued to receive dedicated daily treatments, but most importantly, loving care from her foster family which fortified her will to live. Her foster mom remarked, “In the midst of immense suffering, Hope would find the strength to wag her tail at the very sound of my voice.” Hope continued to cling to her life one day at a time, and soon the sores healed and the patches of bare skin filled up with fluffy fur. She became a very cute and cuddly puppy - lucky enough to have a second chance at life and hopefully a loving home.

That second chance for Hope came last October at the Touch-a-Truck event at Wolf Creek Park in Grove. Hope, along with five other dogs, were taken by volunteers to this event for a chance at finding their forever families. People stopped by to pet the dogs and hear their stories. Then something incredible happened for Hope – she met Jane and Martin Weiss of Grove. Her little ears perked up and she immediately connected with them. It didn't hurt that their grandson also fell in love with Hope. Hours later when the dogs were returned to the shelter, Jane and Martin were already completing adoption papers for Hope. Hope was going to her forever home. Jane and Martin tell us that Hope is an extremely happy puppy and is thriving well with a strong spirit. She now knows the love of human touch, and returns her love unconditionally to them and to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. She immediately settled into their family life, and they are so happy to be able to give Hope her chance at a loving home. We at Second Chance Pet Rescue daily witness the true definition of “Hope” - to want or expect the humane treatment of all animals; to wish for “second chances”, as it is possible for all homeless animals to have loving homes.

New Retail Location for Second Chance Thrift Shop Do you remember when the Second Chance Thrift Shop was a small 8 ft x 10 ft metal storage shed located next to the shelter's parking lot? Because a steady stream of income was needed to help with monthly shelter expenses, the Second Chance Thrift Shop was created. It was a success from the beginning. As wonderful donated goods piled up, it was evident that a larger Second Chance Thrift Shop had to be built to accommodate all the donated merchandise, so a 625 square foot red building was erected next to the shelter office. With continued public support and increase in donated merchandise, we soon outgrew this space, too. In 2011, the Thrift Shop then relocated to a 1,500 square foot store front in downtown Grove. The word soon spread throughout the area - the Second Chance Thrift Shop was an unique shopping experience. Patrons loved shopping at our store, not only for the bargains but because the sale proceeds helped the homeless animals residing at our rescue shelter. Who would have imagined that the Second Chance Thrift Shop could have evolved into the store that it is today. Well, the Board of Directors, our wonderful Thrift Shop volunteers, and our financial supporters had the vision and the faith! On September 2, 2014, Grand Opening Ceremonies dedicated our newest Second Chance Thrift Shop now located at 220 E. 3rd Street (3 blocks east of Main Street in downtown Grove). This new location has approximately 3,000 square feet of retail space; a large attached garage to receive, sort and store all donations; and convenient off-street parking in the rear of the building. Financing of this project was provided by Grand Savings Bank. Remodeling was accomplished by Steve Williams of Steve Williams Construction with generous help from local Grove businesses. The newest Second Chance Thrift Shop is a beautiful, bright retail space. Many unique items are offered for sale – gently used or new clothing, jewelry, shoes, purses, linens, dishes, glassware, artwork, furniture, antiques, books, home décor items, and so much more. Our volunteers pride themselves on offering the best shopping experience possible in a clean, wellappointed shop with merchandise displayed for easiest access and view – plus music to enjoy along the way! Without the support and generous donations from the public, our shelter would be unable to care for the hundreds of homeless dogs and cats that need our daily help in order to Second Chance Thrift Shop Grove, OK

Capital Campaign - We are their Shelter...You are their Future!

Our animal welfare organization was founded 30 years ago by a small group of individuals who were dedicated to provide safe refuge, food, and veterinary care for homeless and neglected animals, to promote and assist with spay/neuter surgeries to control unwanted litters of dogs and cats, and to educate the public about responsible pet ownership. The name of Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake may have changed this year, but the mission remains the same. The shelter facility located at 64301 E. 290 Road is now over 25 years old in need of continuous repair to service the over 700 homeless animals that come through our shelter annually. Some of our shelter deficiencies are: ❑ Extreme overcrowded conditions with over half of the large dogs housed in inferior outdoor kennels exposed to extreme weather conditions ❑ A limited capacity to isolate and/or quarantine surrendered or sick animals to prevent spread of contagious disease ❑ Cramped cat housing area Groundbreaking Ceremonies on July 24th announced the Shelter Expansion and Renovation Project “We are Their Shelter...You are Their Future”, a two-phased renovation/remodel of the current shelter facility. The “Capital Campaign” fundraiser efforts began in mid-August to raise $350,000. Phase I (projected cost is $175,000) - a 2,560 square foot addition for: ❑ 18 indoor dog kennels with outdoor access ❑ 3 individual isolation/quarantine wards for canine/feline intake and sick animals ❑ 364 square foot cattery to relieve overcrowding and an outdoor catio area ❑ On-site food pantry storage area Phase II (projected cost is $175,000) - remodel and renovate the current building with a: ❑ new roof ❑ create private office space and larger customer service/lobby area ❑ expand kitchen/laundry facilities ❑ add a new medical examination room for visiting vets, and individual “Meet and Greet” rooms for prospective adopters. As of this writing, $102,056 has been donated to the Capital Campaign from generous financial supporters. Our quest to reach our goal continues. Donors have the opportunity to purchase Commemorative Engraved Bricks, Recognition Placards or Plaques, or Outdoor Monument Benches.
