Phase I Construction of Shelter Expansion Project Completed - Please Help Us Reach our $175,000 Goal Second Chance Pet Rescue (formerly known as Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake) has celebrated over 30 years of rescuing homeless dogs and cats in Northeast Oklahoma. even 30 years later, our mission has not changed—provide safe refuge, food, and veterinary care for homeless and neglected animals; promote and assist with spay/neuter surgeries to control unwanted litters of animals; and educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

The shelter facility located at 64301 e. 290 Road was built over 25 years ago and was never built to service the approximately 700 homeless animals that come through the shelter annually. To ease the extreme overcrowded housing conditions, construction of Phase I of our Shelter expansion Project - “We are Their Shelter...You are Their Future” - began in the fall of 2014.

Now one year later, Phase I of the Shelter expansion Project is completed. It includes only the most essential improvements that benefit both the welfare of the animals and the public. The Shelter expansion is a 2,560 square foot addition to the current shelter facility which includes: 18 additional indoor/outdoor dog kennels, 3 individual isolation/quarantine wards for canine/feline intake and sick animals, a 364 square foot cattery, an on-site food pantry/storage, and an additional laundry/dog bathing area. Most importantly, all of our animals are now housed in a temperature-controlled environment. an Open House for public viewing of the Phase I Shelter expansion is planned for early 2016.

Second Chance Pet Rescue is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a Program Grant in the amount of $10,000 from the PeDIGRee Foundation. Our life-saving rescue shelter was one of only 14 shelters awarded a PeDIGRee Foundation Program Grant in 2015. The

by Stephanie Epps, Board President Lucky, Lucky Dogs!! You know you hit the jackpot in rescue when you get adopted with your brother and kennel mate! One such lucky boy was Pongo, a shy border collie mix. He was adopted after being reunited with his longtime companion Stormy.

Pongo and Stormy had shared a kennel together for two years at the Second Chance Pet Rescue shelter. Stormy, a catahoula/lab mix, had been a long time resident who lived at the shelter for 6 years. Both dogs had been overlooked by potential adopters because they were too shy and even hid when people would walk by their kennel.

Stormy was adopted by Lyanna and Michael McKinney in July of 2012.

When the McKinney's first saw Stormy at a remote adoption during Second Chance Pet Rescue's Cars for Critters fundraiser, Stormy's story of living at the shelter for 6 long years tugged at their heart strings. They knew they had to give Stormy the loving home he so deserved.

After his adoption, the McKinney worked with Stormy exposing him to various situations to overcome his shyness. The McKinney family decided it would be good for Stormy to attend the following year's Cars for Critters event, to have him walk among strangers and be exposed to lots of activities.

No better ending could have been dreamed. The tight-knit group, bonded by shy personalities, was strengthened with each others presence. All were able to stay together in a family so devoted to them they all visited the Grand Canyon this year!

Thank you to adopters who see the heart of the dog and fulfill the biggest wish of all - to include bonded canine families as your family. I once read this: "Pets are the family we choose for ourselves and you chose ME!" What better gift is there?

In the meantime, Pongo was still living at the shelter and had not been adopted. He was chosen to be one of the dogs showcased for adoption at the Cars for Critters event. Once Pongo spotted Stormy proudly sitting with her family, the reserved, timid Pongo jumped up and excitedly greeted his dear friend Stormy that he had not seen for a year. Upon this happy reunion, Pongo plopped down beside Stormy for the rest of the day. The McKinney's were so touched by the bond that had lasted even with the dogs being separated over a year. They adopted Stormy, Pongo,

“Happy Tails” Adoption Story of Stormy, Pongo and Nikko

Volunteer Opportunities are: Board of Directors Member – Responsible to serve with other Board Members for the general management of the non-profit animal rescue organization.

Front Office/Adoption Assistant - Assist the Shelter Manager by greeting visitors, answering the telephone, answering basic questions about the shelter and the animals available for adoption, and general office tasks as needed.

Animal Care Team - Activities may include dog and cat socialization (provide exercise, play, and hands-on activities), and bathing or grooming the animals to get them ready for off-site events or potential adoption. Includes washing dishes and helping with laundry.

Foster Care Team - Provide temporary care for pets who need extra time and attention before they can be available for adoption. The time commitment required varies between a few days and a few months depending on each pet's needs.

Fund raiser Team - Work with a dedicated group of volunteers who plan and organize special events and fund raisers throughout the year.

Festival Booths and Special Events – Serve as Ambassadors to answer questions about Second Chance Pet Rescue, and promote our adoptable animals at local events and remote adoptions. Volunteers may also be responsible to help transport animals to and from the off-site events.

Photographer/Videographer - Take pictures of adoptable animals to showcase on the website and on Petfinder.com.

Transportation Team - Transport animals that are in need of medical care to and from veterinarian and to and from spay/neuter clinic in Southwest City Vet Clinic in Southwest City, MO. Maintenance Team – Assist with various odd jobs, such as painting, carpentry, plumbing and general upkeep of shelter facility.

Donation Pick-up – Pick up and deliver various donations of food and other items on an as needed basis. Personal vehicle and trailer required.

Thrift Shop- Work retail sales in the Second Chance Thrift Shop, sort and price merchandise, or help pick up donated items from individual homes. Contact Marion Metcalf, Thrift Shop Manager, at (918) 5196352 to volunteer or for more information.

All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to volunteer. Children between the ages of 13 and 15 are welcome to volunteer; however, an adult must accompany them at all times. (We love parent and child volunteer teams!)

Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake Statistics for 2015

“Driving to Save Lives” ~ Moving Animals in the Right Direction Our rescue shelter daily faces very serious overcrowding with the number of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that are surrendered, abandoned or discarded. The phone rings constantly with pleas from people who want to surrender their pet, have unwanted litters, or report abandoned animals that are in need of immediate help. When our shelter is filled to capacity, there is simply no more room for additional homeless animals until others can be adopted. But sadly, there is not enough potential adopters in the Northeast Oklahoma communities to provide homes for all of the unwanted pets.

Second Chance Pet Rescue entered into a Canine Transfer Partnership with the animal Humane Society of Golden valley, Minnesota, in 2010. In 2014, our shelter became a participant in the PetSmart Charities™ Rescue Waggin'® transport program. Both programs give us the ability to transport our adoptable dogs and puppies from our shelter, which has a high pet overpopulation and very few potential adopters, to animal shelters elsewhere in the country where adoptable dogs are in demand.

by PetSmart Charities™ Rescue Waggin'® MuST continue until the pet overpopulation problem in this area has been eliminated through sterilization of pets and there are no more homeless animals. Since the beginning of our transport efforts, our shelter has transported almost 2,000 dogs from the Grand Lake communities! We will continue to educate the public on the importance to spay/neuter their pets, promote the implementation of spay/neuter laws in our area, and encourage people to feel that pets are companions and part of families rather than yard dogs.

1/PetSmart Charities™ Rescue Waggin'® Transports - 204 dogs/puppies Second Chance Transport to Animal Humane Society, Golden Valley, MN – 114 dogs/puppies Only by utilizing both out-of-state animal transport programs, and with the help of our volunteer drivers who make this long, overnight trek to MN and back, can our shelter continue to make room for the extremely high number of homeless dogs in our area.

We recommend calling the shelter to put your name on the waiting list. We ask for an intake fee, to help cover the cost of spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm check, feline leukemia check and the everyday care of the animals. It costs us approximately $100 per animal to transport or to get that animal ready for adoption.

Recently, the Minnesota Coordinator of animal Humane Society contacted our shelter manager expressing their need for cats. She stated: “We are looking for more animals as we don't have enough to meet the demand for our community”. Can you imagine – not enough cats available for adoption!! and our cat room is overflowing with beautiful and healthy adult cats and kittens. So, we are very excited to be able to accommodate their request. On January 15th, 28 cats are scheduled to be transported to animal Humane Society in Minnesota.

by Stephanie Epps, Board President Sometimes the best bonds are those who fight the same fight, and this is so true in the rescue of homeless animals. Second Chance Pet Rescue has a wonderful shelter partner in Flint Ridge FRAMP, Inc., and Susan Barnett of Kansas, Oklahoma.

FRAMP has saved our day more times than we can count. Our first partnership with FRAMP came when we borrowed their large cargo van to transport dogs to Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

Second Chance had been utilizing its small minivan for transports, but with this larger vehicle, we were able to load an average of 25 or more kenneled dogs for each transport.

This doubled the capacity of our previous transports with driver and dogs being more comfortable for this long journey. Then a wonderful thing happened! FRAMP donated the cargo van to Second Chance. Our monthly transport has saved hundreds of dogs by using these new wheels that carry our dogs to Minnesota for adoption.

In 2014, FRAMP gifted our organization with a $30,000 donation to kick off our Capital Campaign Building Fund for our shelter expansion project.

And in the fall of 2015, the shelter's heat and air systems in the original building deteriorated to the point of no repair.

As a rescue with similar unforeseen expenses, FRAMP reached out again by donating $16,000 to cover the cost and installation for the brand new units.

It takes many partners and most importantly friends to navigate the constant ups and downs of rescue. Flint Ridge FRAMP, Inc. and Susan Barnett have been both to our nonprofit animal rescue organization. We look forward to our continued working relationships.

A very special Thank You to our Thrift Shop volunteers for their dedication in providing a rewarding shopping experience to all customers. On September 2, 2014, Grand Opening Ceremonies dedicated our newest location for the Second Chance Thrift Shop.

The new location has approximately 3,000 square feet of retail space; a large attached garage to receive, sort and store all donations; and convenient off-street parking in the rear of the building. The new Second Chance Thrift Shop is a beautiful, bright retail space voted “Best of the Best” in 2015!

People who are devoted to caring for homeless dogs and cats deserve a very special thank you for what they do. and we at Second Chance Pet Rescue are especially thankful for our Shelter Manager Kim Nelson. a homeless animal may come to our animal shelter with scars and behavior that takes patience, love, kindness and warmth to work through. Or, it may be fine and simply needs a place for someone to care for it until it is adopted into its forever home. Kim is that very special breed of human being who works diligently to care for these unwanted, neglected or abused animals until they can be adopted into a loving home. She has the strength and courage as well as understanding, persistence and the dedication it takes to deal with the many issues of managing an animal shelter that oversees the care of as many as 700 dogs and cats annually.

The mission of Second Chance Thrift Shop is to provide customers with a fulfilling shopping experience by recycling donated gently-used items to help support the homeless dogs and cats residing at Second Chance Pet Rescue animal shelter.

Kim started working part time at the animal shelter in June of 2008 and was hired full time as Shelter Manager in November of 2011. She conveys the vision of Second Chance Pet Rescue to the public, staff and volunteers. Her duties are to supervise the daily operations of the shelter, and above all, she works constantly and tirelessly for the health and welfare of our resident animals.

Kim feels that she is the guardian of these beautiful, loyal and loving creatures, looking after them until a permanent family comes along. every day she practices the best of human kindness to fight for these creatures who cannot speak for themselves. This is her “Labor of Love”. In Kim's own words, “The shelter (animals) came into my life at a time when I needed to be rescued.

I needed the unconditional love that each animal had to offer me. I cherish each and every day that I have spent at the shelter and plan on being there rescuing and caring for as many lives as possible, for as long as I am able.”

Our heartfelt thanks to Kim, the shelter staff, and the many volunteers that do their very best to care for each and every animal that comes through the shelter's doors. Thank you for giving of your time, love, and energy to make a difference in saving the lives of so many homeless animals. To all of you that work so hard to help our non-profit animal rescue, each of you are unsung heroes for doing such selfless acts of kindness. Thank you for making a difference—for making every homeless animal residing at our shelter feel that they matter.

For Kim, it is pure joy to see an animal, once homeless, unwanted, and scared, brought back to being a healthy, happy animal and bonded with a new family. We at Second Chance Pet Rescue have all been touched by Kim's grace and kindness. Kim is the gentle soul of our shelter who cares enough to be a champion for our cause, and Second Chance Pet Rescue will be forever grateful to her.

Our shelter has been fortunate to have received donated Kuranda Beds for our dogs and cats. as of the end of 2015, 43 large dog beds and 30 cat beds have been donated to our shelter through the “Donate a Kuranda Bed” program from generous individuals who wanted to see that our shelter animals had a comfortable bed to sleep on.

Our goal is to have a Kuranda bed for every shelter cat. Much more comfortable than a litter pan or the hard steel cage floor, these beds encourage happier, healthier, and more relaxed cats. an additional 10 sets (two sets each order) Kuranda cat beds are needed.
