This visual essay is an exploration of the global connections that surround life in Sierra Leone. From a distance one might think that with its poverty Sierra Leone would be an isolated place, but with an open eye it is clear how deep the global connections run. About half of this essay is centered on the urban world of Freetown and the other half on life in rural villages. Sierra Leone has been hurt by civil war and then the Ebola outbreak, but it is also a society in which people situate themselves within global systems of meaning.
