This visual essay examines the role played by the unique South African biota in establishing the national identity of South Africa. This essay moves from representations of the Big Five game animals to the unique flora at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, and makes many other stops as well. Although the natural world is often used to demonstrate the uniqueness of South Africa, it also allows for a transnational perspective on the region. Paintings and drawings of early 19th century traveler William Burchell are drawn on throughout this essay.
