This visual essay examines the three Catholic shrines in out fo the way Wisconsin towns. The first and most spectacular is the Dickeyville Grotto created in the 1920s by Father Wernerus. This shrine holds the visitors attention through the eccentric beauty of its construction. It's possible to view the Dickeyville shrine as an example of Outsider Art. The other two shrines are more overtly religious in their overall aims and appeal to visitors.
