Rationale

“Expressive design driven by experimental formats, culture and typography with a focus on screen based resolutions accompanied by print.� Expressive design for the culture/arts industry. Delivered through an appropriate media to solve the problem.

Subjects / Themes My aim is to create design that is appropriate for the intended audience. Using expressive design and creative concepts to tackle and resolve briefs. Not restricted to any media but cultural and audience understanding is essential. Influenced by Themes of contemporary culture including music, fashion, lifestyle and youth culture.

Design Disciplines / Creative Development


I will communicate creative concepts through design based areas such as branding, promotion, typography, and interactive design, delivered through screen, print and experimental formats to engage with audiences from creative backgrounds and with a creative interest; Designers, Art Enthusiasts, Music Loyalists and those with a interest in culture.

Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when? A consistent use of design-based principles will be apparent thought out my work. I will focus mainly on expressive design for the culture industry. -

Drawing skills: Concept building + Idea Generation + Storyboarding. Illustrator: Resolving Initial Ideas and Treatments. In design: Type, layout and Portfolio generation. Photoshop: Mock up + Reproduction. After Effects: Finalisation of ideas and animation of moving image. Dreamweaver: Back end web design and coding. Photography: Documentation of work for portfolio and assessment use and design in context. Planning and time management: Maintain ongoing dialogue with FMP. Blogspot: Documentation of design context, design practice, PPD and evaluation. Digital print: To produce products, mock-ups and proofs. Vernon St. Print: Full use of facilities.

Brief 1: Brief 001 Warp Records/YCN

Deadline 4 weeks

Rationale: Within this brief I shall be investigating new and innovative ways to promote Warp Records and their roster. Looking at interactivity and customer interaction with products/artists. I shall be using a number of design skills which will include Idea generation, drawing skills, typography, image making & motion graphics.


Brief 2: Brief 002 Diesel/D&AD

Deadline 4 weeks

Rationale: Within this brief I shall investigate promotion and advertising campaigns along side illustration and in particular type as image. I will be looking at innovative ways of illustration looking at how this can be applied across a range to create a advertising campaign. Brief 3: Brief 003 Sarah Walton

Deadline 4 weeks

Rationale: Within this brief I shall be working on my design for web skills, as this is the main part of the brief. Along side this I shall be creating a artist’s identity and creating promotion for a exhibition. I shall be using design skills within layout, typography and web design to create a website, flyers, posters, exhibition signage and other promotional material. Brief 4: Brief 004 Skipton Auction Mart

Rationale: Within this brief I shall be looking at brand identity and applying it to a range. I aim to take the current identity and bring it up to date keeping existing customers and bringing in new ones. I shall be using design skills within areas of typography, layout, image making and web design across areas of branding, promotion and advertising. Brief 5: Brief 005 Kestrel Film Works

Deadline 2 weeks

Rationale: Within this brief I shall be investigating the use of motion graphics based upon typography and existing brand identity. I shall also be applying the brand identity to a number of product that can help and promote the company. I shall be using design skills within areas of typography, motion graphics, story boarding across areas of branding and promotion.

Rationale: Within this brief I shall be creating a brand identity for a boutique bakery with an influence of graphic design. I shall be touching areas of typography, layout, web design, art direction and design for screen. Creating products such as websites, blogs, promotional material (flyers, poster, viral’s etc).
