Letter From The Editor
Spring greetings to one and all. It is a most auspicious time of year. The time to come out of hiding and start enjoying the outdoors and lush sunshine. The world is starting to bloom and so are we. We must put on our aura of countenance and shine forth. And of course time to socialize. Get out and about with friends and family. A time to make new friends and try new fashion. Expand your horizons and well have fun. Show your party girl side in a woman’s time. Each issue we aim to bring you looks that are accessible & stylish. The looks are intended to inspire and encourage women to accessorize their lives. Each time we endeavor to create a world of Marvelous Mode. Take you on adventure of sorts into fashion chic style and accessorizing. My life would not be half of what it is without fashion. It has brought me such joy and it fuels my every day life. 2014 marks our 3rd year in publication. When I started out on this journey, I had no idea where it would take me but it has been a huge surprise that is taking on new meaning for me and others. I believe fashion is meant to be enjoyed. It is a way for us to express who we are every day. So this year get out of your shell and entertain in a Marvelous Mode style. Cheers! Heather Sonrisa Editor/Creative Director Marvelous Mode

Social Butterfly 2014 is the year to get out and about. This Spring Summer 2014 is for the Social Butterfly in us all. Flit about from soirees to teas and everything in between . Chose Flirty Frou Fashion that enlivens the senses. Plan parties and attend many outings. It’s time to celebrate. The social butterfly has been a term in the 20th Century to describe women in high society or socialites who are truly Marvelous hostesses and partiers. These women are not of the shall we say club girls but women who attend functions to enrich their lives. They spend much time planning their wardrobes and parties. In this Issue we have chosen to create a Mad Hatter Tea Party. Social butterflies love taking tea by themselves or with others. This is a chance to entertain on the most highest level and relax while enjoying the company of others over tea. This is a time honored tradition brought over from England. However, tea ceremonies date back to many centuries in Asia. So meander through our garden of delightful fashion chic style and accessorizing for ideas to enrich your life.

The Fedora
For the last decade the Fedora has definitely been the most popular hat worn by women and men alike. However, as history served the hat was originally a feminine silhouette many centuries ago. Then in the 20th Century it became a man’s style. However in the 1930’s & 40’s the women’s fedora made a comeback. This season white fedoras whether panama style or short brim are fresh. Natural straw stylized fedora with flower trims and fabric are chic. A Dark denim colored fedora can add a chic mystery to the face.

There is so much to say about the American Milliner/Designer Hattie Carnegie. Born in Austria and immigrated to America at the beginning of the 20th Century. She started out in Hats with a friend & opened a shop in lower Manhattan. The styles were so popular and then the carriage trade discovered her so she moved uptown to 42 East 49th St and thus began the era of Hattie Carnegie. She was a lady who understood elegance and the true elegance of European Couture. But she also best understood the American Woman’s taste. In her new boutique she began importing Vionnet, Chanel and other Parisian high end fashions for her growing clientele. She was a lady who understood the value of moving in social circles and it was her social butterfly virtues that endeared her to her elite clientele. She dressed Joan Crawford, Joan Bennet, Barbara Hutton and many other stars and socialites. And she discovered a little known upstate New York girl who would later become the Queen of Hollywood - Lucille Ball. Lucy began her career as one of Hattie Carnegie’s in House Models. Hattie was so taken with Lucy that she mentored her and even took care of her as Lucy was afflicted with Rheumatoid Arthritis her whole life. Lucy was just a teenager when she came to Hattie’s and this brought out the motherliness in Hattie. Lucy commented in her life that Hattie taught her so much and one of things was how to dress and present oneself. Clare McCardell has been credited for forging the American Design Style; however, Clare worked for Hattie before venturing out on her own as did many other American Designers during the 1920s - 1950s. Hattie should actually be credited for the beginnings of modern American design as it was her creativity and business sense along with her impeccable elegance that drove her success and established American Fashion. Taking Tea with Alice: Looking-Glass Tea Parties and Fanciful Victorian Teas http://www.amazon.com This is our Marvelous Pick for a Tea Party idea book. Even though it was intended for children, the settings, ideas & recipes can be translated for adults. It is based on the real life Alice Liddell that Lewis Carroll wrote about in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. There are even recipes from her family. We loved the Queen’s Cream Scones recipe. They were delightful with strawberry jam. We highly recommend purchasing the whole book as it is full of delightful ideas for teas.

Brilliance In Bottles http://www.h2oplus.com/
http://www.skinceuticals.com When you are entertaining & being entertained you need to be exuberant & charming. However, if your skin is dull then all the charm in the world will not work. So we chose two lovely products that hydrate and refresh dull skin.
- h20+ Night Oasis Oygenating Rejuvenator - This lovely night time moisturizer is light with a light scent. It works overnight to help aid your skin in hydration to wake in the morning with a glow. We certainly woke up with a brilliant complexion. - SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF Broad - Range Antioxidant Treatment - This day treatment is serious skin care. It encourages the collagen to repair which in turns gives a newness to the skin. We found this enlivening to the ďŹ rmness in our skin and it boosted the glow factor. Marvelous Mode

The “IT of cosmetics Modern Social Butterflies are flitting about from soiree to tea and everything that is peachy keen, so they need a cosmetic line that does more than add color. It Cosmetics is on the cutting edge of cosmetics that improves the skin while you wear it. For our party looks we chose exciting bases to bring out our brilliant best.
It Cosmetics
www.itcosmetics.com
*Feel The Moment Primer Serum - This product was a magic potion in the bottle. And a little goes a long way. The pleasing aroma added to the effect. A must have. *ByeBye Under Eye & Hello Light Liquid Brightener in Light - We normally do not like concealers as they are cakey and go in pores. But this magic wand was a dream to use and soothing. It really hides lines and highlights your assets. *Celebration Foundation Illumination in Fair - This is definitely a new technology in foundation. We loved the lightness and the color. Gives a lovely glow to the skin and great coverage. *Tight Line Waterproof Full Lash & Liner - A brilliant product this one. A mascara that defines and lengthens with a liner in one. Absolute brilliance in one bottle. *Vitality Flush Color Stain Stick in Je Ne Sais Quoi - Our fav product and creme blusher. This little magic in a stick looks clear but works with your skin to give a blush of an effect. It also has the most yummy cherry aroma. *CC+ Lip Serum in Love - Yes you will fall in love with this lip gloss. It enhances and adds fullness without bloating the lip. This is important because to much plumping can stretch skin and give wrinkles. The color gives a lovely stain to the lip and the light glossy texture is just right. The beautiful nude rosy color is great for all skin tones. Marvelous Mode

Hair Hair Hair in Red if you Dare John Freida
www.johnfreida.com
For brilliant hair color you can do at home, we chose John Freida. For our cover model we used their newest line of red colors. The Red Copper Canyon gave a rich red toned copper. There are so many copper colors in nature and this one was a true red copper with lots of brown undertones. We loved the ease of use in this foam hair color. The smell was pleasant and it was a neat & tidy way to color the hair. The rich foam is a delight to use as it does not drip and is easy to control. It gave nice hair coverage. Along with the hair color John Freida is also known for hair care. They have a whole line of color care for reds that is truly brilliant. The radiant Red shampoo cleans without stripping color. The newest product in their arsenal is the Color Refreshing Gloss, this is a must have for extending the life of Red Hair Color. Reds have a tendency to fade and with this you can have bright color longer. For the Red Canyon Color we used the Gloss For Cool Reds. This one brought out more reds in the copper which was the perfect choice for firey red hair. Bravo to John Freida for Brilliant Hair Color & Care. Must Haves.

Style It
Loreal Paris
www.lorealparisusa.com The new line of hair sprays & styling products from Loreal has blown us away. The control is light and provides touchable texture.
The coiffure is back. And for the modern social butterfly it’s not your grandmother’s coiffure. But the messy version of a slimmed down Marie Antoinette. We deem it the Nest Twisted French Twist coiffure. The hat style of the moment is the perch tilt hat. These were made popular during the 1930s & 1940s when hat styles were made into doll hat size due to fabric shortages. These lovely toppers set atop the head and tilted forward. Our cover story used a take on a 18th Century Riding Hat from Haute Rose with a pink tulle butterfly trim. This was perched on top of her lovely red Nest Twisted French Twist. For this style you will need small, medium & large rollers, bobby pins, comb and hair spray. The top and front will get the small & medium rollers while the bottom will get the large rollers. Before removing the rollers do a light spray with the Fine Control HairSpray from Loreal Paris. This spray is light weight and allows for nice hold but not stiff. Remove rollers and shake a bit. Brush hair lightly. Next back comb around the hair slight. Grab top of hair and roll in a french twist and secure with bobby pins. Next you will twist the bottom part and roll slightly and secure with bobby pins. Make sure this look is puffy and not pulled as in a traditional french twist. Lastly, add the finishing touch with a spray of the Fine Control Hair Spray from Loreal. Marvelous Mode

Mani Pedi Time Julep www.julep.com
Julep is yummy nail color/care at your finger & toe tips. For the social butterfly we chose a ballet pink color that would be spot on for any occasion. The perfect choice was Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment which is nail therapy with a brilliant pink color for the nails & toes. We covered it with their clear base coat to seal in with a kiss. To prep we used the Glycolic Hand Scrub to buff the dead skin away. This product is heaven in a tube that leaves hands/feet soft and refreshed. The Rock Star Hand Creme is the best hand lotion we have ever used & it has a vibrant crisp scent. Marvelous Mode
