Chictastic Defining Chic is not an easy endeavor. It is a feeling that one conveys through fashion. How can a design in itself be chic? The term is coined from the French in regards to true style. What does it mean in terms of today’s style? How do you get chic or is it something you are born with? And if the Devil Wears Prada does God wear Chanel? I see Chic as a freedom that one feels when wearing great fashion. The style does not wear you - you wear it. It is an individuality that a person conveys when wearing the latest. Throughout history many women have been credited with setting the fashions of the day: Designers, Celebrities, Socialites and Editors. But one thing is most certain, one cannot convey this fashion chic without the fashions. So let’s party through Spring and show our Chictastic selves in the latest designs and accessorize with pizazz.

A Revival of 60s Decade of Mod Haute Love
The 1960s Retro Revival
The Decade that was the 1960s catapulted the Fashion World into the Modern times and beyond. From cinema filmstar looks; T.V. becomes more mainstream; super models take over the magazines; rivals in the streets of the UK ; art life collide and music shakes things up. It’s the decade that truly set the tone for modern style. Well guess what, It’s back. At least the essence but reinterpreted for the modern sexy woman. So much of the 1960s focus of fashion was very teenage oriented. That does not fly with MOD-ERN females. We have grown up. We don’t want to cover up and look like little girls. Ready to Wear really came into it’s own during this time. Mary Quant took a street approach and created a new kind of affordable fast fashion that was fresh and wearable. In couture Pierre Cardin was ruling the catwalks and women everywhere wanted to be a Cardin Girl. Andre Courreges gave us the space age look. Twiggy gave us the little girl lolita that took the world by storm and she became the first house hold super model. Then there was the more uppercrust look of super model Jean Shrimpton who gave us a more sophisticated but young oriented girl to emulate. Then along came the woman Sophia Loren. The grown up. The true woman. The Italian style was hugely influenctial during the 1960s especially to the MODS. La Dolce Vita the film by legend Frederico Fellini brought modern sexuality to the big screen. Mod is a term that became synomyous with 1960s fashions. The term originated with a click of UK teenagers who were influenced by French beatnicks and Italian Dandies. They loved jazz and reggae. Road Vespa Italian scooters and partied all night. They were the first club kids. Men wore the slim Italian suits with skinny ties. Women wore a more plain loose black & white look with heavy eyelid makeup. Both were a rebellion of sorts to the 1950s youth looks and their parents looks. The Term Mod is short for Modern. The 1960s ushered in a future world. And the serious bound up vixen of the 1950s was replaced by a more demure and girlie woman. Teenagers finally had a voice in fashion and it transformed the design world’s view on women’s wear. Women were becoming more emancipated and sexually aware and all of this brought us the 1960s fashion world.

Vidal Sasson Vidal Sasson came into his fame during the 1960s revolution in fashion. He gave Mary Quant her famous bob cut. His hair styles were off the beaten path and the youth culture at the time embraced his slick looks. There is even a legend that a very famous Editor in fashion once went to him to get that slick bob look. Since his passing the legend and his philosophy and products have grown into an at home selection of color and care. We were excited and chose obviously to use Vidal Sasson products for our Cover Shoot. Our brave Editor in Chief, Heather Sonrisa is a natural auburn blonde but wanted to go red red. The Coverlook is the result of using the Medium Vibrant Red Hair Color. We are extremely impressed with the texture and richness of the color. The color care products were a dream to use and really enhanced the retro messy 1960s beehive pony tail. The best at home haircare and hair color we have tried.

The Quan-tifying of Fashion Tribute to Mary Quant Where to begin with this groovey designer of the 1960s era. She was truly an entrepreneurial lady. Her story reminds one a bit of Coco Chanel. They both were women who were of their time and saw a need for more modern youthful clothing. They both looked around to what the women were already wearing to draw inspiration. The difference is Mary did so that every woman could afford it. She really set the tone for how modern fashions were going to be sold and worn. She made Ready to Wear Fashion affordable and hip. Most fashion at the time was only considered fashion if it was couture or very expensive. Mary thought it can be simple in look and simple to create and thus less expensive to manufacturer and sell. Revolutionary for the time. Yes, she is most known for the mini skirt. Andre Courreges was sending them down the catwalks in Paris too. But I believe like Chanel she knew how to translate a couture look for the masses.

La Dolce Vita Italian Fashion During the 1960s much attention was turned onto Italy and it’s designers. In fact it began in 1951 when Florentine Giovanni Batista Giorgini a prominent business man decided to put Italian Designers on the International map. He produced a show in Florence, Italy then the center of the Italian Fashion Industry. He launched the careers of Emilio Schuberth, the Fontana Sisters, Contessa Simonetta Visconti, Roberto Capucci, Alberto Fabiani, Veneziani, & Emilio Pucci. U.S. department stores were there and embraced it and Italian Designers with enthusiasm. It was also in 1960 that Valentino began his career. The English youth started to take an interest in Italian fashions. Mods wore the slim cut Italian suits to exert their image. The 1960s Olympics were hosted and held in Rome. Fellini’s La Dolce Vita was at the cinemas. Sophia Loren became an international star. And voila Modern Italian style was born.

Tribute to Fashion’s Italian Goddess Sophia Loren Sophia Loren is the epitome of the Italian Woman. She is strong, uncommoningly beautiful, curvaceous, confident and stylish. This lady endured the hardships of WWII in Italy to emerge a studied actress. It was in 1960 that she crossed over to Americans and won an Academy Award for Best Actress for the Italian Film “Two Women”. By then she was already well known in her own country but now Americans knew her. She then went on to star in American Films in the 1960s which solidified her stardom as an international star and beauty. Her chic during the 1960s on and off film help to develop the Italian Fashion Chic. An uppercrust embelished fitted bright and womanly look. She knew how to wear a hat too. It is truly surprising how much influence she had on women’s fashion during the 1960s. The preeminent look of the decade was one of the little girl lolita. But Sophia was all woman in body, heart and mind. Italian women have a true self assuredness in looking like a woman. It seems that Italian culture embraces a more mature looking woman.

Of course the reason I love them is that they also hired Italian snazzer Emilio Pucci to redesign all the uniforms their Air Hostesses wore.
