2012 ANNUAL REPORT MARWEN

Dear Friends of Marwen: IN 2012, OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY provided an opportunity to celebrate Marwen’s history and consider

our vibrant future. Our achievements are a testament to Marwen’s founder Steve Berkowitz, who in 1987 dreamed of making art education accessible to Chicago’s under-served youth. The enduring power of this vision was demonstrated by Marwen’s record-breaking accomplishments in 2012, including: ° Over 2,300 completed enrollments across Marwen programs ° 100 Studio Courses ° 50 College & Career courses, workshops, special events, and field trips ° $730,000 raised at Paintbrush Ball, which in 2012 honored founder Steve Berkowitz The impressive growth in demand for Marwen’s programs prompted us to develop an exciting plan to transform our space, enrich our curriculum, and reach more young people. We are eager to share more details of this aspirational vision and campaign with you, our supporters, as plans unfold. As I write this, in my 20th year as Marwen’s Executive Director, I am immensely proud and gratified to be part of this organization. I thank you for being a steadfast partner in our journey to create free art opportunities for Chicago youth. Your belief in Marwen allows us to welcome the next 25 years with enthusiastic anticipation.

MARWEN PROGRAMS

STUDIO PROGRAMS FREE STUDIO COURSES for 6th through 12th graders are at the heart of Marwen’s

2012 ANNUAL REPORT MARWEN

mission. Marwen welcomes students of any experience level to take after-school and weekend courses that offer hands-on experience in a wide range of media. Students are taught by and work with practicing artists, using professional tools and techniques to make original works of art. Courses include all materials and supplies completely free-of-charge to students.

100

STUDIO COURSES

43 STUDIO COURSES were taught OR ASSISTED by marwen alumni

In 2012 we proudly offered the greatest number of courses ever held in one year. 1,644 of Marwen’s more than 2,300 completed student enrollments were in our studio courses and workshops. Here are a few of the courses that staff and students cited as their favorites:

Photo Stories

In the Photo Stories course, students were paired with residents at a senior center in Marwen’s neighborhood. Students learned about the seniors by interviewing them and shooting black and white photographic portraits. The final projects featured candid portraits alongside audio recordings of the interviews.

T-Shirt Design

Design, print-making, and fashion always excite Marwen students. We combined all three in a T-Shirt Design course (in partnership with Sharprint, a professional printing firm in Chicago). Students created designs and made multiple visits to Sharprint’s studios to work with the designers to screen-print these designs onto t-shirts.

Marwen Lab

In Marwen Lab, an annually offered year-long accelerated program, our most dedicated students complete an independent project over the course an entire school year. Guided by expert teaching artists, students conceive, complete, and exhibit an original body of artistic work.

College Programs

College Programs help students navigate the process of applying for college through counseling, portfolio development, ACT preparation, and financial aid workshops.

Career Programs

Career Programs build students’ artistic and professional skills with classes

focused on work in creative fields like photojournalism, graphic design, filmmaking, and advertising. Students gain experience in resume-building, interview skills, and portfolio preparation, and, through internships across Chicago, get hands-on experience in creative workplaces.

Art at Work

Students in Art at Work were commissioned to produce five short films highlighting art installations at the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve. These films are being used by Openlands for educational and marketing purposes.

Design to Print

The long-running Design to Print capstone career program hired 12 students to participate in the production of a unique line of Marwen greeting and holiday cards. Students were chosen from a process requiring applications and interviews. MARWEN 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
