Neil Yotsuya is a 5th year architecture student at the University of Oregon. His architectural fields of interest include sustainable and resilient design, education, and housing. He is a great fan and proponent of woodbased architecture and he often draws insiration from Japanese design. His architectural capstone project focuses on landscape and education in a ‘School for Environmental Resiliency’ sited in downtown Portland, Oregon. >

TOPO + PLANS

SITE PLAN A gradual slope runs down the site from East to West meeting the creek at it’s base. Between the earthen mounds that sporadically jut up from the slope, three structures are securely nestled on the landscape. The primary structure faces the creek unwaiveringly while her two sister structures join together for security, facing the primary sister for additional support. W

Dug into the hillside, the buildings anchor themselves onto the site. Inspired by traditional Kalapuya housing that was dug into the earth, these structures evoke the Kalapuya style of architecture while not explicitly copying the constrcution methods.

Note the clearstory taking up much of the primary building orienting views towards the creek. Also note how the roofs of the two secondary buildings overlap. The conflict of the overlapping roofs is resolved by offsetting the two secondary structures vertically rather than horizontally.

Note how both buildings are firmly embedded in the landscape. Also note the awkward cut of the right build, due to nonlinear arragnement on the site.

Note how the first floor is nearly completely below-ground on the back side of the building. Also note how this enables the second level access to the outside.

The cluster of buildings, with the two minor sister buildings having views toward the primary sister.The major sister building has views directed outwards towards the site.

PRIMARY BUILDING STRUCTURE

The primary building structure on the site is a long gathering hall with relatively open, view-focued faces front and back. The sides of the building are a complex system of walls, windows, and exterior cladding that allows for light and an airy volume while still providing visual privacy. The exterior panel system is a would cladding that attaches to a sub-structural layer.

The secondary building follows much of the logic of the primary building. However due to different programmatic goals, holes are punctured through the wood cladding as to provide views and light into the smaller, more intimiate space.

PRIMARY BUILDING STAIR

The one and only stair in the project, a simple staircase that connects the groundlevel gathering space to the mezzanine level above. The staircase is a very simple design and is relegated to one side of the building as to not disrupt activity in the space. W

DESIGN OPTION

PUNCTURED VIEWS

PUNCTURED VIEWS AND LIGHTING

A series of panels are removed from the curtain wall to allow for greater visibility out of and more light into the main building. The trade-off is a loss of privacy that the complete curtrain wall provides.

Evening sun cast spotted light into the main hall. The curtain wall now filters light more selectively than before. Views to the outside are no longer directly solely forward.
