DALTON
I am currently in my fifth year at the University of Oregon, anticipating graduation in June 2023. I will graduate with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Minor in Entrepreneurship. In the future, I would love to apply my background in entrepreneurship to my experience in architecture and open my own architectural firm.
When I started at the University of Oregon, I declared pre-business. However, I changed my mind after seeing the collaborative environment, hands-on work, and tight nit cohorts within the architecture program. After deciding architecture was the path, I applied and was accepted, and started my journey.
While pursuing my degree, I’ve taken many courses that have helped me discover my true interests. Most of these courses were architectural studios; however, a handful of non-studio classes have helped me fine tune these interests. Some of the most influential studios I’ve taken include a net-zero elementary school focused on sustainability and passive systems and two mass timber studios that focus on structure and cost estimation. The non-studio classes that have influenced me most include structures, enclosures, lighting, simulations, and all entrepreneurship courses.
After graduation, I’m eager to begin working in the field of architecture and
see what it has in store for me. Although I have interests in projects I’ve done previously, I haven’t found a specfic type of architecture that I want to focus on. With that being said, I’m looking for a firm that embraces the collaborative environment and tight nit community that led me to join the architecture program in the first place.
During week one, we started developing the site. The site for my project relatively flat and is loacted at the corner of 15th and Alberta in Portland, OR. Since my site is flat I used the toposurface tool to created ground planes that the buildings would sit on. I used the remainder of my time to further develop the site by placing trees and creating roads, and side walks. I also used the building pad tool to cut into the toposurface for my building floor to sit on (black outline on ground plane in the back of the image).

This is an exploded axon that shows the levels created and exploded based off the massing study.
PLANS, SECTIONS, ELEVATIONS
During week three, we drew out the entire building and from it pulled plans, sections, and elevations. My project is to be constructed of mass timber which includes columns laid upon a 20’ x 20’ grid, spanned by wide member glulam beams. It’s a simple construction sequence and my program fits witin the structural bays.
The site plan shows the roof outline of the library and its surrounding context. The site plan also shows the roads, sidewalks, and trees within the site.
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
On this floor there is a reception desk / storage office right inside the entry. There is also a public meeting space, a cafe, a childrens area, bathrooms, and two sets of stairways leading to the upper floors.
SECOND FLOOR PLAN
This floor is very open with one open to below space looking into the public meeting spaces, and the other two looking down to the main entry and the cafe. On this floor there are bathrooms, two smaller book / reading rooms, and two stairways leading to the upper floors
THIRD FLOOR PLAN
This floor features two larger reading / book rooms, along with staff offices, public bathrooms, and two stairways leading to the upper floor.
FOURTH FLOOR PLAN
On this floor there is one reading / book room, a room filled with makers spaces, and an accesible green roof patio.
LONG SECTION
Cut through the long section running from East to West
CROSS SECTION
Cut in the short direction running from North to South
EAST ELEVATION
Right side of the building that faces an alley and another smaller building.
NORTH ELEVATION
Back face of the building that faces an alley and another smaller building
WEST ELEVATION
Left side of the building that faces 15th the other main street on the site.
SOUTH ELEVATION
Front face of the buidling that faces Alberta which is the main street on the site.
In week 4, we started placing stairs into our projects. Throughout the entire library there are two means of egress, one being down an architectural main stair that is open/airy and surrounded by program (pages 18 + 19). The other stairway is still connected by site lines through window into/out of the building but serves as a fire stair (pages 20 + 21).
The axon shows how one would circulate floor to floor through means of the main stairway.

This is a section cut throught the fire stair where one can see the visual connection made back into the hallway through punched openings in the stairway.
FIRE STAIR AXON
The axon shows how one would circulate floor to floor through means of the fire stairway.
In week 5, we started making exploded axon views to help show our projects. To do this, we used the displacement tool to seperate the roof from the building and then we seperated each floor from the one above. The image to the right is one of the exploded axons and it makes it easier to view each floor individually while seeing how it would connect to the one above.
This is another view of the exploded axon from a different angle.
During week six, we started making section perspectives using section boxes. They are super helpful when showing structure in this project while also giving insight into what’s going on within the building.
CROSS SECTION PERSPECTIVE
Another section perspective image cut from the cross section.
During week seven, we starting doing renders in enscape. I have pulled two render, one from the first floor and one from the second floor. Both are taken down the main hallway filled with natural light.

SECOND FLOOR RENDERDuring our last week, we made custom sheets and went back to annotate our plans, sections, and elevations. After the drawings were annotated we placed them on the sheet. The following pages are the final set for the Alberta Library.
