Love Letters to Lee Meriwether

at Theatre West, a special evening to honor and celebrate a Hollywood Star

By Dina Morrone and Philip Sokoloff Photography by Charlie Mount

Lee Meriwether, actress, humanitarian, former Miss America, and the original Cat Woman in the original Batman movie, along with so many other acting roles and accolades, was honored for her outstanding career at Theatre West in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 10th, 2018. It was an evening of film, television and Broadway stars, first-rate live entertainment, scrumptious food, and even handcrafted chocolates created especially for the event by Dave’s Delectables, with Ms. Meriwether’s image perfectly rendered on them, and each with its own separate box. Theatre West has been Ms. Meriwether’s theatrical home for many years; in fact, she has been a member since the theater's inception 55 years ago. In a city where theaters come and go, Theatre West is proud to say that they are the oldest continuously operated professional theatre company in Los Angeles. They have cranked out top-notch theater, solo shows, play readings, original works festivals, fundraisers, weekly workshops acting, writers, musical comedy, Shakespeare - and has also been home to famed Storybook Theatre, which has been entertaining children on the Theatre West stage for 35 years. Ms. Meriwether first became a national figure when she won the Miss America pageant in 1955. Following that, she was the first “woman’s editor” and female regular on The Today Show with Dave Garroway. Primetime series followed, including roles as a series regular on The Time Tunnel, Mission: Impossible, The New Andy Griffith Show, The Munsters Today (succeeding Yvonne De Carlo), Barnaby Jones (with Emmy® and Golden Globe nominations) and All My Children. Her thirty-plus feature film credits in a career spanning almost six decades include Batman: The Movie (in which she became the first feature film Catwoman, opposite Adam West), The Undefeated (with John Wayne and Rock Hudson), The Legend of Lylah Clare (with Kim Novak), Angel in My Pocket (with Andy Griffith), 4-D Man and Namu the Killer Whale (both with Robert Lansing).

Live theatre, however, has long been Ms. Meriwether’s first love, and her many memorable appearances at Theatre West include its very first production, Spoon River Anthology with Betty Garrett, returning to that show four decades later for its 40th anniversary production; Aesop in Central Park with Richard Dreyfuss; Ladies of Hanover Towers with Carroll O’Connor; Pop.7, Passionate Ladies; Nunsense; A Short Stay at Carranor; and more, plus numerous appearances in regional theatres around the country, including productions of Follies (with seven former Miss Americas), The King and I (with George Chakiris); Plaza Suite; Hello, Dolly!; Mame; Last Summer at Bluefish Cove; The Odd Couple (female version); and her solo show Women of Spoon River: Their Voices from the Hill. Aside from performing on stage at Theatre West, Ms. Meriwether has dedicated countless hours to the theater by supporting the work and performances of her fellow members, volunteering, and also serving on the Artistic Board. The evening was filled with so many memorable moments, speeches, love letters, tributes, song and dance, as well as appearances and performances by Jim Beaver (Deadwood, Supernatural, Justified), Doug Jones (The Shape of Water, Star Trek: Discovery, Hellboy), George Chakiris (West Side Story, Oscar winner), George Tovar (Magic Castle magician), Adam Huss (Power), Robert Colbert (The Time Tunnel), Chad Darnell (nest to casting for Selma and Magic Mike), Barbara Minkus (I’m Not Famous), Anthony Gruppuso (off-Broadway musical The Babies), Kiki Ebsen (singer and daughter of Buddy Ebsen), Laurence Juber, (virtuoso guitarist, played with Paul McCartney and Wings), Marc Cherry (creator of Desperate Housewives and writer for The Golden Girls), Jay Huguley (Walking Dead, True Detective), Marcia Rodd (Broadway, TV, Film), Garrett Parks and Andrew Parks (sons of Theatre West co-founder and MGM legend Betty Garrett), Jeffrey Johns and Joe Abraham (Still Waiting In The Wings). Ms. Meriwether was presented with an award from the Chairman of the Board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Jeff Zarrinnam, and also from Lori Gangemi, CEO of Lee’s favorite charity, Ability First. She received a recognition certificate from City Council Member, David Ryu’s office; a certificate from Daniel Tamm, Mayor Garcetti’s Representative on behalf of Mayor Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles; and a certificate from Congress-

man Brad Sherman. Ms. Meriwether couldn’t have been any sweeter to everyone who approached her, the attendees, special guests, and admiring fans. She was clearly very moved by all the attention, accolades and praises. Being in her presence, it’s clear to see that she is a woman who is loved by many, and yet she is so humble and modest. With her famous warm smile, she gives the love right back and makes you feel special. It was certainly a magical evening in Los Angeles to celebrate a legend. An evening for those who attended that they will not soon forget. *Love Letters to Lee was produced by Theatre West members, Linda Rand, who also directed, Amy J. And at twenty-one, she decided to move to Los Angeles and create a new life journey. Life on the West Coast was a big adjustment, but Candice was fueled by possibility and the opportunity to pursue her dreams. She started working right away as a sales person on Rodeo Drive at La Perla. After three months of working at La Perla, she left to become an entrepreneur and started her own networking group in Beverly Hills. Candice selected highly influential and wellknown people to join, making the group elite and extremely desirable. Her passion for connecting like-minded business professionals, quickly increased the networking group in just a short matter of time. Its popularity began to attract media and she was soon asked to be a host for iHeart Radio/TV. “When they called and they offered me my own show I was beyond myself, finally feeling like my dream was coming to life!” She named her show, Luxe Life, on which she interviews celebrity entrepreneurs and motivational speakers, asking questions of general curiosity, such as: Where did you get your inspiration? How did you begin the process? What have been some of the high and low points of your journey? Candice’s relaxed and authentic personality combined with the empowering stories of her unique guests left listeners wanting more, making Luxe Life an instant hit. In just six months, the show’s success tripled its viewing time to three times a week!

How would you describe yourself? I’m a pretty down-to-earth person and have always been very focused and strong willed. For as long as I can remember I’ve been a determined visionary, so it’s no surprise that I’ve become an entrepreneur! Was their anyone in particular who inspired you? Absolutely, Lynn Tilton. She is the chief executive officer and sole principal of Patriarch Partners, a holding company managing 75 companies. I admire Lynn for her courage and perseverance in becoming one of the most powerful women in what has traditionally been a man’s marketplace. I’ve interviewed many successful people, but it was truly an honor to have Lynn Tilton on my show! If you could change one thing in your life what would be? If I could do one thing differently, I would have delegated more of the small things at the beginning of my career, which would have allowed me to be more focused on what I do well. What is your future goal? My goal is to turn Luxe Life into a talk show on Main Stream TV. What are your hobbies and interests when you’re not working? I love dancing and playing the piano. And, of course being a woman, shoe shopping is also a favorite pastime of mine! Tell us about your charity work. Luxe Life donates to a charity called, “Beauty for Ashes.” Their cause is protecting women in third world countries from physical abuse and sex trafficking, and assisting them with life skills for the workplace to provide them with more independence. What else are you passionate about? I’m deeply committed to supporting entrepreneurs, and female entrepreneurs in particular, because I believe they are strong role models for the younger generation and have the ability to reshape our future.

want, and do what they want on their own terms. There is a great sense of pride in standing on your own two feet and financing your own lifestyle. The rise in women business owners is making such a positive global impact that I feel blessed to be a part of the movement, and honored to share such brilliance on my show. What advice would you give a young entrepreneur? I would share with them the value of being different and unique in a world that is over-saturated with followers and wannabes. How being honest with yourself and deciding what it is that you want in life, versus what everyone else is doing, is one of the first keys to happiness and success. This can be discovered by asking yourself some vital questions such as, “What legacy do you want to leave? How do you want to spend your time? How big do you want to grow your empire?” The answers will provide the direction of knowing what to focus on and work towards to achieve those goals on a daily basis. We have a limited time here on earth, we might as well make it worth it, take risks, and have some fun doing it! If you could leave our readers with one message, what would it be? Never give up. There will always be challenges in life, bother internally and externally, but always believe that things can and will get better. There is magic in believing what you cannot yet see. We are powerful creatures and now is the time to own our power.

This makes me especially passionate about mentoring young female entrepreneurs and reminding them they can be successful without having to compromise themselves. They can have what they want, go where they

How to create extraordinary success with the BRIGHT® Business Method By Christoph Ulrich Mayer

Christoph Ulrich Mayer is a very successful speaker and Business Designer from Germany. He works with lots of big multinational corporations like Siemens, MAN or Fujitsu, but also with medium-sized companies, startups, and on a personal level too. In 1998, he was responsible for the Product of the Year at the worlds largest computer trade fair and received the CEBIT award. He does not just talk about how to create products, business models, and success. He has actually done and achieved everything starting from scratch. In our article in the October issue, he gave us insight into how confidence about ourselves defines the life we lead, and how successful we are. This new article introduces us to his BRIGHT® Business Method.

18 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

Most companies work according to their "habits". They just do what they've always done. Many even develop new products or services based on their experiences and habits. But today the environments and the markets are changing very quickly. It’s very likely that “business as usual” will destroy your business in mid-term or at least in the long run. We know from brain research that we can map our emotions into three categories: stimulation, dominance and balance/harmony. In a stimulation brain-state, we tend to change something. In fact, most companies are in a state of balance or dominance. Therefore, they are often blind to necessary changes until it is too late.

How do you recognize it’s time for a change? When a company is new and successful, it grows fast and needs investment, and then it begins to grow slower and creates profit. After that, it grows slower and marginal, and then sales finally begin to shrink. That is the last point in time to go out of the comfort zone of the dominance or balance state, otherwise, the descent of the company becomes unavoidable. Another sign is when your competitors have better and more successful offers than your company. If you are not the one who better meets customer needs than others, then your business process is outdated and second-class. For startups, the same principles apply, but the results will only be visible in the future. Therefore, you need tools to find out whether your business model and products are working - or not - before you start. Bring it all together This is where the BRIGHT® Business Method comes in. There are several methods and philosophies for parts of business success. The purpose of lean production and lean management is to focus all actions to the voice of the customer and create flexibility and quality. But it does not necessarily have to lead to good products. Agile project management tries to focus the developer’s work on user stories. But it does not guarantee good sales. Story Marketing wants to convey emotions, but if this does not suit the products or the products are bad, success is limited. Other methods improve production, logistics and so on. In order to achieve extraordinary success, everything must fit together, otherwise, you offer inappropriate products at high cost or poor quality: customer needs and benefits, marketing and sales strategy, production, logistics, purchasing, research and development and, very importantly, an appropriate definition and specification of your products. All these different perspectives require time and effort to bring them together or negotiate, or

else there is a vision that is so clear and powerful that everything is aligned to it. This applies at both, company level and personal level. And this is where the BRIGHT® process begins: creating a clear vision and giving it power. Disruptive innovation is no longer just feature-based To explain how the BRIGHT method not only transforms all areas into a whole but also gives them a new quality, let's take a look at just one part of the business process. The specification: In 2006, Nokia was the market leader in mobile phones, second place went to Ericsson, the market leader in business phones was Blackberry and number one in PDA/tablets was PALM. There were telephones and tablets with the Internet, e-mail, camera, MP3 player, calendar, notes, color screen, touch screen and even full keyboards. In 2017, none of these companies existed. They were all gone. Why? Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007. On paper, the iPhone specification was the same as for all competitor products. But it washed away all these products. Today only Apple and plagiarizing Android mobile phones are relevant in the market. One of the reasons is that the usability is far better than that of the "old" models. The BRIGHT® method contains the secrets of this success and a business design process where everything is focused on the future needs of the customer rather than copying ideas from competitors. Taking the lead makes you number one. Copying makes you second in the best case. Let me illustrate the difference to the "normal" results: Today, Apple's market share in mobile phones is only 20% due to its pricing policy. But they make 90% of the profits of the entire market. You will be facing these challenges in many markets in the future where there will be leaders that make a profit and lowprice competitors selling masses. Where is your positioning in this environment? But at the same time, the new methodology is your chance to make your vision a gift for you and the world. 19 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

Wo finden Sie in diesem Umfeld Ihre Positionierung? Umgekehrt aber ist die neue Methodik Ihre Chance, Ihre Vision zu einem Geschenk für Sie und die Welt zu machen. 21 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

“OH Breath on me, so that I know, I am me” By Heike Stenzel

"Breath. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.“ ~Oprah Winfrey

23 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

“Good morning Breath, are you with me?” How the day will flow is up to the Owner of that I am; Signed by The Breath. Owner: „What the heck - writing, haggling and talking about – a Breath to take? Breath: „Yes, as I am the A and I am the O, this is the essence of my nature“ Owner: „Dwell on , and flow through me“ The story about the most natural ingredient. Breathing. The Breath that is something that we all own, that is just there and controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Created from the very first moment we took our very first breath by ourselfs to introduce our beingness onto this plane of existence. Arriving healthy and wealthy with all the potentials we carry within our inner being. The fullness and wholenss that we are. The unlimited potential that strives beyond. The greatest of what we have within our core to manifest without the urge to control as it is just given. The Breath to remind us of every moment that we are here to be present, in the Now. Inhaled and exhaled. Owner: „How many times per day are you around, Breath?“ Breath: „ As if, when you breath me in and out its twelve per minute that sums up to 720 breath per hour. I fill your day of 17.280 glorious breath! Nevertheless, a lot of You, do the common - shallow breathing - you just stop, in the centre of the diaphragm - does not represent ME and my empowered Self, the Breath that I am- I go beyond!“ Owner pointing out to you, the Reader: „ Alright, where is your breath, right now?” No doubt, you are becoming more aware in the instant by reading these words and next, setting your intention towards your precious breathing. Taking a full breath deep down into your abdominal that returns a smile, brightening up your whole system, shimmering its magnificent excellence!

Or am I mistaken? And you are one of those who practise forever deep, delicious breathing because you know about the dynamics of your Breath. Freedom is not getting what you want, it is wanting what you get By Neale Donald Walsch

27 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

I’ve heard that before. You’ve heard almost everything here before. You will feel joyous and free when you simply apply in your life what you already know. And . . . to offer one more repetition . . . the fastest way to apply it in your life is to assist someone else in applying it in theirs. Finally, you would be aware that everything is energy in vibration. Everything. And so you would pay much more attention to the vibration of everything that you eat, of everything that you wear, of everything that you watch, read or listen to, and most important, of everything that you think, say and do, and you would immediately adjust the vibration of your own energy and the life energy that you are creating around you if you find that it is not in resonance with the highest knowing you have about Who You Are, and the experience of this that you choose to demonstrate. Express Gratitude. This is the most powerful tool you could be given. Gratitude can be a selected energy, and not merely an autonomic response. When one actively chooses to be grateful for everything presenting itself in one’s life (and I do mean everything), it sets up an energetic signature that washes over and impacts the energy of whatever is now arising. This can transmogrify (defined as: “To transform, especially in a surprising or magical manner”) the presentation itself – to say nothing of one’s entire life. Choose a State of Being. Do this in advance of anything you know you are going to think, say or do. Life has very little to do with what you are doing and very much to do with what you are being while you are doing it. The surprising thing about this is that through pure intention, “beingness” is transformed from a reaction to a creation. It is no longer something that arises out of an experience, but something that you put into an experience. And one final tool for integration. Go with the soul. Most often, you respond to whatever is happening in your life – whether it is an illness, a disappointment, a happy surprise, whatever it might be – from the logic centre in your mind. You analyse the data that your mind holds regarding the experience at hand, and that is the place from which your reaction emerges. It is possible for you to cultivate the ability to respond from the wisdom centre in your soul. Here, the data regarding the experience at hand is unlimited and expansive, and includes considerations and understandings that may not have been even conceived of in the mind. 28 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

The soul is the place within which everything you know is already integrated, and simply awaits the outward expression of that. So take a moment whenever anything is confronting you – something that you call “good news” or something you call “bad news” – and instruct your mind to let you act as if you are out of your mind. Then notice your response emerge without thinking, producing a spontaneous demonstration of your soul’s wisdom and awareness. I love this, I love this. Now we’re talking! Now I’ve got some equipment with which to finish climbing that mountain! This is great. And you know what? I actually came up with my own version of that last tool myself. I guess I understood intuitively that there was one way that I could bring to my everyday life the experience of what I already know to be true. So I came up with, a few years ago, what I’ve come to call The Magic Inquiry. I use it to make an instant assessment of whether what I just did, am now doing, or am about to do, is . . . well, here’s that word again . . . congruent with my deepest desire. Before I sit down to watch a movie or walk into a social situation or prepare a meal or have a conversation with a beloved other, or do anything at all that I have judged to be of here-and-now importance, I quietly ask myself: and what does this have to do with the Agenda of my soul? That’s a great question. That can open anyone to a powerful inner exploration.

SEEDS OF GREATNESS By Jan Diana

My Beloved Children of Heart, “Today marks the beginning of greater tomorrows for us all. Soon spring will be upon us in many parts of the world, ushering in a time of new life and new beginnings. As we approach this new phase of life, let us draw our attention to all the many seeds that have been planted in fertile soil. Soon they will begin to sprout and grow, ready to fulfill their planned destiny. Such it is for us all, as many seeds have been planted waiting until the ideal timing of readiness to sprout, grow and blossom into the destiny each will reach. Imagine a glorious field of possibilities holding all the seeds of desires held deep within your hearts. We share as a collective these dreams for a New Earth, a new playing field where all that is desired which brings joy can be easily experienced. The dreams of so many have come together at this stage of Earth’s evolution to fuel the awakening of consciousness. The seeds of these dreams were planted well before you incarnated into your Earth experience. You were fully aware of the plans for Earth’s evolution to higher consciousness. You eagerly made your choice to be an active participant in the greatest adventure ever to be. Certainly you knew there would be challenges and yet you also knew you were up to meeting them and successfully moving through in grace. You also knew there would be great offers of assistance given to help you individually as well as the whole of the collective of Earth. To be a part of the grandest adventure thrilled your hearts with great anticipation of the glory that awaits you and your brothers and sisters.

Today in this moment of connection of hearts, I share with you that the time is here for you to step into greater awareness of your sacred truth and the plan you made for this lifetime. Much has changed and is changing. The flow of energy has shifted to align more with heart consciousness. Living in the heart, fueling your thoughts and desires from your heart, aligns and attunes you with the frequency of love. Divine love is your authentic truth and nature. Though you may have found it challenging to recognize your true nature on a planet that holds duality consciousness, the time is here now to more easily make those conscious connections. It takes focus with consciously choosing what you desire. Where your focus is directed, affects your experience and reality. As you turn to your heart and focus from that loving perspective, your life experience will shift to greater joy. Then you will begin to more readily recognize the divine spark within yourself and within all living sentience and sentient beings. Fueling thoughts of joy, manifests joy. With proactive and conscious choice you will develop this new way of living. Your connection to your true beingness as well as your divine nature will become more evident to you. Celebrate all the many experiences you have had that have led you to this moment. Be grateful for them and for your opportunity to live at this chosen time. As you recognize the value of the journey, you will be able to more easily release the old stories that offered experiences that were perhaps of lesser value than your truth.

31 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

Now is the time of a greater recognition of what is the authentic truth. There is no value in having feelings or judgments of lessness about yourself or the past. It is best to bless them and let them go, embracing the present moment and all the wonder that is unfolding into glorious possibilities. As you release defining yourself and others to be of lesser value, you free yourself from mistruth. There is great freedom in this as it allows you to release resistance energy, ropes tied to struggle and suffering that fueled experiences of feeling separation from the source of your truth and your divinity. Let the past go, appreciate the glorious journey and open to receive the blessings that are showering upon you. Let yourself grow in the greater lightness to a fuller remembering of the sweetness of your truth. As spring time unfolds, notice the many seeds beginning to sprout, and the beautiful new blossoms upon the trees. Think of yourself as the great master that you are, awakening to your destiny. Your seeds of greatness are beginning to sprout and blossom into great wonderment! Let the lightness fill you, fueling your inner desire to become fully aligned and attuned with your truth. Mastery is a process, a glorious journey. Your seeds of greatness will grow and expand. As you evolve into higher consciousness and awareness, this will fuel even more growth and development. There are no limits to your mastery. These are exciting times for us all, as we collectively and individually choose the path of mastery, the path of remembering our greatness. Your choice of timing is given to you, allowing you the freedom to develop as you desire. You are who you are no matter what roles you have played or what your experiences have been thus far. The seeds of your truth grow to become that glory just as the seed of an oak tree will grow to become a beautiful tall oak tree. Enjoy the journey of discovery. Take each moment as a gift to explore your truth. Embrace the greater vision of what can be and of whom you really are. I celebrate you, each of you. You are the jewels of my heart. You have within you the seeds of greatness. This is your destiny.

SELF

A NEW WAVE OF THINKING IS UPON YOU ME By Michael White Ryan Photo by Raquel Chicheri www.raquelchicheri.com

Here we stand in all our glory, the connected self, the disconnected self, are we here merely to say, “I like that”, “I dislike that” person place or thing!!! How does one relate through egoic frosted eyes, of interrupted assumptions in all I see and hear? I am, is a thousand pesky little questions rolling round inside our head, “I am” the egoic Red Baron lurching in anticipation to destabilize one’s sense of stretch, pull, curiosity of reality. The I am stands as 84,000-awakened sleeping buddha self ’s, planting belief-time-seeds in furrows of futures-past. Time alive, the now guardian of remembered seeds stretching out as bus stops waiting our eager arrival, on all highway paths ahead. 34 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

People constantly talking…we never let any of it go… the emotional, the mental, the physical, the spiritual, the I don’t have a clue, and and and, let us not forget, the I already know. Memories are my home, my house, my alone foundations made in/of sand. The “I am” lives in a complete misalignment, for history is me on-coming now!!! “I am” was a microscopic spark of light, ignited into coming home motions. A conceived sentient, in a lost-then-found-darkness, traveling to, we know not where. Tricked at the gate we were. Thousands of moments, with-given-Grace propelling us forward, into spaces of unique infinite selves. It’s a thousand petaled birthday smorgasbord of every experience you can ever want to gorge yourself with. Happiness is our natural state of…but our happy-condition can never arrive until……? When we choose love is all there is, choose products, choose my I phone over our natural state of unbeingness. We blindly chose to run run run forever so far away from ever knowing source, from the now-doubt, does it even exist, into the “I am”? It’s our eager, ever-so-healthy-running exercise for consumption happy! Have we at any point in time, asked, why do we follow traditions, when is an appropriate time for “I am” to disrupt? I have to tell you right now I have to leave I have to leave it all Going to cleanse the body mind spirit tomorrow will still be here I don’t have to worry no more

Who is this “I am” making love undiluted to him/her/ life? Which one of my schizophrenic I-amness selves, is playing music to step-dance willingly/willfully into portals lost through self-consumption? Heavy with crossover thoughts, I am frozen, lost in forever memories cradled in the arms of father-time. With frosted eyes lifted, the wakening mist slips quietly past the egoic guardians. I hear-see-recognize me, for now, the I am being is found, is free. I and Doctor Who are riding a red phone booth through parallel standing galaxies, elevating into cosmic universes of oneness. 2018, a year to rock foundations we can sleep no longer who am I just got serious heal the creature, heal the I am but what about me Is this possible, can I free my “I am” slave, absolutely, if I think therefore it is probable. Are we the co-creators of our own divine destiny, I hope not! As the creator driving into past-futures, the constant raining lights of doubt eventually fall from logic, on reason and in one moment, we choose the path of the unknown jungle or maybe no. Comparisons, knowledge, assumptions all lead us down into the paths dead end, only one inlet, is the outlet. A cul-de-sac is no place to call home. You are not who you think you are, open wide and let you back in!!! blessings are with you always…….be alive, harm no one.

As darkness enlightens, one’s treasures come forth. Birthed from universal breath into caverns of duallights relationship. Forever once again, born in continued mindless reason, refurbished creatures from times ancient. I cashed all my pay checks to ride, only to discover all the never-ending-mindful challenges I paid for. Attachments unfold, releasing its victims into new understandings of heart felt aliveness, I am saved. Wow, how does that feel? I feel, therefore “I am”. Ask, how does an I am evolving express, when we replace thinking of something past for a replacement thinking of something new? Cycles in collaboration, it’s a never ending new-past attached in circles of thinking’s, I am feels good and safe, ego is alive, and so he/she should be!!!

Celebrate Springtime By Nancy E. Yearout The first day of Spring reminds us that new life is beginning. Nature is celebrating renewed life on the earth with its budding trees and green grass. You notice the Spring tulips and daffodils peaking their way up into the landscape as your texting while walking down the sidewalk.

Spring, please turn off all of your electronic devices! Enjoy the sights and sounds that are all around you while out in the world. When we are looking down at our phones or are glued to the television we are missing many of life’s greatest miracles, each other.

The hibernation period has ended, and we can again emerge from our nests. It is the beginning of warmer weather full of sunny days for swimming, hiking, boating horseback riding, skating, running, walking, biking, camping, fishing and so many more outdoor activates conversing with nature.

2

Today with our big screen smart TV’s, our iPad, laptops, computer games, smart phones and virtual technology it is more difficult for us to walk out the front door. This may come as a shock to some of you, but humans were not meant to stay in doors all the time. We require sunshine, and fresh air to keep our bodies healthy and vibrant. We also need the energy that resonates from spending time with nature. The silence of walking through the woods is amazingly therapeutic. When we experience nature, it is calming to the mind and to the soul. Therefore, you will see many campers and RV’s on the road today and may wonder where they are all going? The answer is, they are all searching for some peace within their mind and their soul. They have found that the great outdoors is the natural cure. If you cannot go camping take a trip to your favorite local park, botanical garden, or the zoo. Make it a weekly event to be with nature to clear your mind and give yourself a new perspective on life. You will pick up new ideas and feel happier after spending time outside. If you are one of the lucky ones to make it outside this

Dreaming Your Way to Wholeness How Engaging with Your Dreams Accelerates Healing and Growth By Angela Dunning

So many of us aspire to reaching profound meditative states and receive visual information about ourselves and the issues we face in life, and yet, at the same time neglect the vast amount of psychic and spiritual/soul material readily available to us each and every night of our lives. Scenarios, visual content, visitors and information that rarely appears in our waking meditations is always available to us, if only we would pay attention and remain faithful to what our soul is trying to tell us in our dreams. In my experience, only Shamans who can Journey to non-ordinary reality in waking life have access to such similar and rich material. So surely it makes sense to actively engage with this material if we really want to shift our growth? Like a poet, artist or composer our soul speaks to us nightly in the form of dreams through complex imagery, scenarios, flights of fantasy and lurking dangers. Conveying our fears, dreams, longings and predominant issues facing us at any one moment in our life. Everybody dreams every night of their lives, regardless of whether you are aware of dreaming or not; this is the truth for everyone. Each night our own personal dream-factory goes to work on our behalf: Sifting and sorting the threads of our lives; the events of the previous day; our current anxieties and needs; the relationships in our lives; unpacking fiction from pretence and holding up the truth-mirror to reveal our personal dislikes, fears and projections (usually much to our discomfort); and most magically of all, showing us threads, clues and sometimes very clear signs about what our next steps, direction and desires are. At night the ego falls deeply asleep and so is no longer able to control, regulate or trick us with its many faces, duplicity and neediness. In its place our soul comes fully to life. Unfettered by the heaviness of the Ego and Persona our soul works uncensored to our greatest benefit through our dreams. In dreams we are taken to far-off, foreign places, unknown towns, beautiful, healing beaches or rivers, or back to our childhood home, the schoolyard, or workplace. Often animals, both those we know in our waking lives such as our pets and those unknown to us like wild animals, also make an appearance to give us clear guidance, comfort or subtle information about a more instinctual part of us needing our attention. Sometimes we are visited by certain characters including members of the opposite sex who represent our balancing feminine or masculine side. These characters show us the different aspects of our own personality and which ones are in need of more of our attention, love and development.

39 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

Another important and very healing function of dreams are “emotional, psychological, physical or soul corrections”. These are actual shifts which take place within a dream, meaning that the work is done and often we resolve things that we are unable to do in waking life. These shifts are real, hugely helpful and can bring us much relief. They can involve both something which needs correcting within yourself or within your relationships in life. This can include past relationships, so dreams may involve family members and former partners or even a deceased person or animal. These corrections are noticeable because in the dream they usually involve you doing something you find difficult in life, such as forgiving someone who has hurt you in the past. Paying attention to such dream events means you can then consciously let go of that situation and commit to behaving differently from now on. It is a shift which you can then build on in your conscious, waking life. Here are a few tips for consciously engaging with your dreams: 1. Tell your psyche that you wish to remember your dreams. Once you begin to ask your psyche for dreams and are able to remember them you will find the habit of not being able to recall your dreams will become a thing of the past. To do this, however, just as with a new practice such as meditation, you need to be gentle with yourself and your psyche. Ask regularly and try not to become impatient if nothing happens to begin with, or you only receive drips and drabs. Keep asking, sit poised with a pen and notepad in the morning and let your mind gently stay in that wonderful, in-between condition between sleep and consciousness; that soft, melty place where it is most likely you will be able to recall things Overall, like with all forms of personal and spiritual development it is your mind-set and intention which is most helpful here. 2. One of the most helpful techniques to begin and commit to doing regularly is to record your dreams. Write down your dreams in a dream journal each morning and in as much detail as possible. Notice any links, repetitions, themes, characters, environments, times of day and the season and everything about each situation. This sort of private psychic work is really best done alone, so if you live with someone, find a way to carve out a space in your home to do this. Creating this time and space for this valuable part of your growth is something that, once begun, quickly becomes so important to you that to not do it can begin to feel unsettling as you sense something important in your inner-work is being missed. 3. Learn not to force yourself to wake-up too suddenly, or leap out of bed and begin doing things. All of these 40 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e February 2018

things immediately creates a blockage in your communication with your unconscious and pushes your psychic material back into your mind’s basement. Allow yourself to wake naturally, as often as possible, and if you do have to set an alarm, find a gentle one which does not abruptly or loudly wake you as neither of these are conducive to the conditions your unconscious needs to feel safe enough to reveal its material. 4. Use a Shamanic Technique called a Dream Intention. This is a simple yet powerful way to begin to develop your relationship with your own dream-weaver. All you need to do last thing before going to sleep is write down your dream intention on your notepad, asking your higherself, Spirit/God/Goddess or guides for guidance, information or healing regarding a particular issue; giving thanks and gratitude in advance. Then place it beside your bed or beneath your pillow. Please note, this is something best done occasionally so you don’t overwhelm yourself with too much psychic material. Dreamwork leads to wholeness through bringing into closer relationship our conscious and unconscious selves. No other method can do this as effectively or as profoundly. In my personal experience it is extremely helpful work to undertake and accelerates our personal growth in ways in which nothing else in waking life can. Yet, it can also be challenging and hard work as our dreams really do make us face all aspects of our personality, the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. In the end though, it is this honesty which leads to our wholeness and expansion if we are brave enough to traverse the nightly landscapes awaiting our presence. Sweet Dreams.

THE PORTRAIT PAINTER GOES WHERE FEW OUTSIDERS CAN

with Juan Bastos

Drawing a “Prince” and his Consort By Juan Bastos Photos by Tom Parry

A few years ago in Malibu I was introduced to the matinee idol and famous Russian actor, Oleg Vidov, and his American wife Joan Borsten. In 1985, Oleg escaped from the USSR via Yugoslavia and Austria. At the time, he had one contact in

Italy: Richard Harrison, an American actor living in Rome. Richard took Oleg to the US where he dramatically defected, and the “Robert Redford of Russia” became the first major Soviet actor to ask for political asylum. Oleg rose to fame in the 1960’s when he was still in his twenties, and starred in two-dozen films over as many years. But he decided to leave the USSR after he divorced his second wife Natalya Fedotova. A close friend of Soviet Secretary General Leonid Brezhnev’s daughter Galina, Natalya used her political clout to block directors from hiring Oleg, and after he graduated as a film director, to block studios from hiring him to direct films. In 1983 he slipped out of Moscow in the aftermath of Brezhnev’s deathby marrying a Yugoslav and asking permission to visit his wife in Belgrade. From Belgrade he illegally crossed into Austria in 1985, and from Austria made his way to Rome. While at Richard’s home he met Joan, and the love affair started. They were inseparable from 1985 until Oleg died last year.

42 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

I was fortunate to get to know them and to see Oleg’s first international film, “The Red Mantle,” directed by Gabriel Axel who would later win a Best Foreign Film Oscar for “Babette’s Feast.” Oleg played a medieval prince. The movie was nominated for the 1967 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or and cemented Oleg’s movie career. Many people recall how his good looks many times overshadowed the lovely actresses who were his co-stars.

| Richard Harrison & Oleg |

I have been a lover of all things Russian since my childhood. While growing up in Bolivia I read Dostoyevsky and Solzhenitsyn and was a great admirer of the movies “Battleship Potemkin” and “Dr. Zhivago.” A few years later in college, I took a class on Chekov and read all his plays. As I delved further into Russian culture, I came across the beautiful portraits of Valentin Serov, who was a contemporary of John Singer Sargent and who was painting, amongst other famous subjects, the Russian nobility of the late 19th century. I drove to Oleg and Joan’s house in the hills above Malibu to start the portrait commission. We opted to show them with their view of the ocean in the background, surrounded by their beautiful property. Nearby was the Malibu Beach Recovery Center for the treatment of alcoholism and addiction that was co-founded by Oleg and Joan. Oleg served as Chairman, Joan as CEO. I depicted the loving relationship of Joan and Oleg in a large pastel drawing, immortalizing the silver screen actor from “The Red Mantle.” He was very analytical about how I was portraying him. He had a great ability to adapt to playing a part while posing for me, and with the most subtle expression he would control his facial mood with an expertise that I had never witnessed before. He joked that I made him look like an aristocrat, who he was not, and my answer was that he played a prince in one of his greatest movies, and for me, he certainly was one.

Juan Bastos is widely known for his several hundred portrait commissions over the past three decades in the U.S., South America, and Europe. He has also been featured in a number of one-man and group shows, the most recent being his November 2017 retrospective of 40 California portraits at Denenberg Fine Arts in West Hollywood. Mr. Bastos lives in Los Angeles and a selection of his work can be viewed at www.juanbastos.com.

“What is the simplest, easiest way to improve your life? Smile as much as you can!” ~ HealThruWords®

Can your smile change your life? By Roxana Jones

Many years ago, I met a wise master who taught me the importance of staying positive, always wearing a smile no matter how difficult life could get at any point in time. As part of his teachings, he offered me some examples using people who didn’t smile and what kind of life they had as a result. Slowly but surely, I began acknowledging that I too, had forgotten how to smile. With one of his examples, he made me realize how, when someone told me a joke, I would smile, laugh and enjoy while the joke was told and even a couple of minutes after. However, if the same joke was told a second time, I could not find it funny or enjoyable anymore. My capacity to smile and enjoy a happy moment was quite brief indeed… On the other hand, when someone or something would create for me a problem, something to worry and be serious about, the situation would be quite different. I would not only think about the problem once, but my mind would linger and continue thinking about it hundreds of times! My capacity to worry and be serious was quite well-developed indeed… He lovingly said to me: “If you don’t smile and laugh on the same joke again, why do you worry about the same problem over and over again?” I humbly smiled at him. But smiling at him and making my ego-mind go into silent mode wasn't enough. I would have to practice for months after that, until I could start seeing the amazing changes in my life thanks to my new capacity to smile more.

45 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

WHY ARE THE LESSONS WITH MY MASTER RELEVANT? The reason is simple: The majority of people in this world are looking for more happiness. But how can they find that happiness if instead of smiling they worry, and instead of being cheerful they choose to be serious? Do you want to check how many people smile as part of their daily routines? Go into a public place like a supermarket, mall, shop, post office, library, etc., and look around to see how many people have a smile on their face... WHY YOU NEED TO SMILE MORE Among the hundreds of benefits of smiling more, here are a few well-documented ones that are great reasons to begin including it as a daily habit right away: 1. It reduces stress levels as it drastically improves your mood. Even if you are not feeling happy and you smile, endorphins will trick your body to feel that you are. 2. It lowers pain as the endorphins that are released while you smile act as a natural painkiller. 3. It boosts your immune system as it allows the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps you to raise your levels of happiness and wellbeing. 4. It helps your heart to stay healthy and reduces your risk of heart disease (number 1 cause of death worldwide) or any other cardiovascular problems. If you are looking for a happier and more fulfilled life, if you are looking to become a higher version of yourself, you must do all things possible to begin smiling more, ESPECIALLY TO YOURSELF. You really don’t need a joke to smile. You really don’t need someone else to make you smile. You only need your own awareness and willingness… HOW TO SMILE MORE If you are ready to improve your positivity and happiness levels, and raise your vibrational frequency, here are three simple steps you can start practicing without delay: 1. Close your eyes and for a moment, take a deep breath and slowly exhale. Repeat three times. Now, with your eyes still closed, begin seeing yourself as your inner child. Begin smiling as your inner child would smile and then, stay with that smile in your face for a while. Feel it as deep as you can, remember the sensation that is bringing to

46 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

your mind, body, and spirit. Memorize it so that you can smile in the same way as many times as you can during your day. 2. Set a reminder on your phone to ping you at least every hour. Find a place where you can smile freely without being disturbed. Let your inner child take charge, close your eyes and begin to smile a couple of times while you inhale and exhale. 3. After a few days or weeks of doing this exercise on your own, you will be ready to allow your inner child to smile at other people you meet throughout the day. Yes, it is a smile for no reason, a gentle gesture that respectfully means you simply acknowledge the other person. You will be amazed at the results. Some will smile back at you, and those who don’t, will walk away with that little s eed you have planted in them so that sooner or later they can begin smiling too. The best of it all is that by smiling to others, YOU will be the one benefiting the most, and that is my promise to you. Are you ready to let the magic of your smile change your whole world? Thank you for reading and until next time! Here is Ron Gutman’s short video on TED with many more facts and research on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=U9cGdRNMdQQ

7 STEPS

TO HELP OUR CHILDREN OVERCOME FEAR By Brent Feinberg

As parents, our greatest vision is to have children who have a positive sense of self with enough self-confidence to navigate the challenges of life. Life experience has taught us all that at times we are faced with situations that create fear preventing us from moving forward. One of the greatest gifts you can give to your children are the skills and tools to deal with their own fears to do more in their own lives. This creates a foundation that they will draw from daily as they create a life that they love. 1. Fears are normal The first step in this process is to explain to your children that fears are normal. By acknowledging that we all have fears within our own mind-body system and expressing this to our children we take away the “scary” thoughts that prevent us from addressing what we are afraid of. We become aware that we have nothing to be ashamed of when we realize everyone has fears, be it our parents, colleagues, peers or anybody around us. Share this idea

with the children in your life. Have open communication where by you can share some of your own fears with them to show them how normal it actually is. Being open about your fears with children will allow them to feel as if they can also communicate their fears more easily to you. (It is important to keep this appropriate as a parent/child conversation.) 2. See the fear If we want to be able to release or overcome our fears we need to know exactly what the fear is that we are dealing with at any age. It is important to have the words and vocabulary to describe these. Some common fears are fear of not being good enough, failure and not being accepted. There are many! Guide children through a process of asking themselves “what am I afraid of ?” It is important to know which fears are limiting them in their lives. If they do not know the fear, it remains hidden and cannot be dealt with appropriately. Assist them to write or draw a list of the fears that they feel are making them feel stuck, anxious or overwhelmed and keeping them from being happy and peaceful. This is a start to release and let go of what they fear most.

3. The best reason to overcome fear Overcoming fear is often a challenging process. It can take time and requires us to draw on our inner strength. For this we need motivation and inspiration and grit. Help children to connect with a sense of inner purpose, passion and dreams in their life to give them the desire to overcome whatever obstacles may lie in their path including fear. The greatest inspiration we can have is our own dreams, passions and goals in life. Dreams are beautiful and intimate and will change as we learn and grow as individuals. It is important to always have a dream at any age. Encourage children to go within themselves and dream. Get children to close their eyes and use their imagination to see their dreams, write or draw them down and come up with an action plan to make them real. 4. Action to overcome fear Once we know what our children’s fears are and we have connected them with the inspiration or a reason to overcome them they have a base to work from. Times will arise along their life journey that will require them to a push through the boundary of the fear, freeing them from the hold it has over them. I personally know this opportunity is nearby when I feel “butterflies” or energy moving within me. This happens at different times when I need to face a fear. After we take action to face the fear the feeling dissipates and we build an extra sense of confidence moving forward. Help children to understand this and to know that all we can do is our best in life. Teach them to let go of trying to control the outcome of situations or meet everyone’s expectations outside of themselves.

environment at home for children where they can feel safe, loved and peaceful. Screaming and shouting in the home is very unsettling for children so try keep a calm tone in the house. Children are more perceptive than we realize and they often model themselves more on how they see adults behaving than what adults tell them to do. Live by the ways you want your children to be in the world. Teach children to have self-love and compassion for themselves and others. When we are filled with love and compassion there is no room for fear. Be kind and loving to them and others and they will learn the same behavior. 7. Meditation Having the mind trained in peace and cultivated in love and compassion is essential for physical health and mental well-being. Meditation has now become a normal practice in schools and homes due to the positive affect it creates. There are many ways to practice meditation and when learned early on as children it can give an inner compass as to which actions and choices will lead them to greater peace and joy in life, free from fear. Meditation helps to release stress, anxiety and fear and replaces it with stability, self-confidence and self-love. Of the many meditation techniques I have used, Transcendental Meditation is the most effortless and effective and can be learnt at a young age. No matter how challenging life may seem it always feels easier and more joyful after meditating.

5. Power of the mind Visualization techniques have been proven to work on many levels in the brain and body. Using these techniques are extremely beneficial for children and adults in letting go of fear and anxiety. Fear rests in the mind and body so therefore we can teach children and ourselves to use the mind as a tool to become free. Go within and see where and how the fear rests in the body and use the power of the mind to release the fear and all the things associated with it. (In my books “ Freeing Freddie the Dream Weaver Workbook and Activity Book” I have incorporated specific visualizations that are easy to access and use from our web site. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=freeing+freddie+

Rev. Maryam Nasr Sardari has a Masters Degree in Art Therapy from George Washington University and is a registered Art Therapist, author, vlogger, Registered Reconnective Healing Practitioner, Resigtered Reconnection Practitioner, Registered Pranashakti Mahavidya Practitioner, and a Certified Transformational Life Coach. Her career in Art Therapy came to a halt when she was “let go” due to budget cuts during the Iraq war from the National Institutes of Health. Having been put in a precarious position she agreed to a partnership in business with a friend. This venture offered her a way to utilize her love of creativity in designing jewelry, however, she did more of the business aspect of the work. The business did well but Maryam became exceedingly depressed and out of alignment with her path until she found herself at a crossroad with regards to her life purpose. Finally, she left the partnership and found herself in a new state of being. She refers to this as a sort of “spiritual awakening”. It was as though the Universe began to speak to her and guide her to what she does now. Maryam’s style of coaching is rather different from the general practice in that she not only draws on her experience as an art therapist but she also does a lot of “soul work” with her clients. The process of creativity is in itself therapeutic and non-threatening which makes for a perfect vehicle to begin the coaching work. Vision boards are a great way to utilize creativity. “Soul work” involves a series of tasks aimed at helping the clients go within and discover answers for themselves. She guides them through each step. In 2017 Maryam was ordained into the priesthood of The Order of Melchizedeck which is the highest commitment to service. She has never been happier doing her work and feels passionate about being a motivator and inspiring people to be the best versions of themselves. Her goal is to do motivational speaking as a way to share her message. Maryam has offered workshops in Vision Boarding, Spoon Bending, Mandalas as well as Personal Trees. She has been consulted about Mental Health and Visual arts in the online magazine www.HelloFlo.com

Information about Reconnective Healing and the Reconnection as well as testimonials and vlogs on her website: www.TheCoreShift.com Her Youtube Channel is called The Core Shift. “Marry yourself! Promise to be true to you and never leave you”. This is what I’d like every woman to take into her heart. Women are naturally nurturers. Biologically we have the gift to grow life inside of us and bring it into the world. Physically we are equipped with incredibly high pain threshold and an amazing capacity to give. Culture and societal structures have treated women as second class citizens and programmed them to feel unworthy. This is all changing thanks to the rise in consciousness and incredible women who have done ground breaking work in shifting these paradigms. We are so readily willing to shower others with love and give and put them first as if our needs and wants were not as important. Women deserve to receive the same. In fact, what you are so ready to give needs to go to you first not only to fuel you to help others but also to set an example, a role model for the generation of young women looking up to you. There is no room for guilt here. You have everything you need inside of you to rise above and be your own best version. Forget what society dictates about how women “should” or “should not” behave. There are no limits. Follow the light within and know that you are part of the “all knowing Universe”. You have got this.

LOOKING GOOD & FEELING GREAT

with Margaret Tomaszewicz

The importance of getting a good night Sleep By Margaret Tomaszewicz

In my European Skin Care Studio, clients ask my advice on how to look their best. Aside from reserving a customized facial treatment and using good organic products at home, I remind them of the true benefits of a “beauty sleep”. So today I would like to remind you about those benefits received from a restful nights sleep, which will improve your skins’ health. Lack of sleep will increase the amount of a stress hormone called cortisol. Although we need some cortisol in our bodies, too much can lead to inflammation. When inflammation becomes chronic, our skin is susceptible to conditions like eczema, rosacea and wrinkles. Not enough sleep and added stress causes acne and blackheads.

54 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

Many of my clients are young adults that have issues with breakouts in their mid-thirties. Due to their busy schedules and stressful lives, they do not take care of their skin properly and often do not get enough rest. I educate them on the importance of maintaining proper skincare and making positive changes in their lifestyles. An increase in the level of cortisol hormones will also make the thyroid and metabolism sluggish, which means our bodies will burn fat less efficiently. This leads to weight gain, feeling tired and being more susceptive to illnesses. The other hormone our body needs to look and feel good is a growth hormone. In this case we need a larger level of this hormone because it is responsible for regrowth and regeneration of the damage cells. If that is not able to happen due to lack of sleep, our aging process is accelerated.

Sleep is the time when our immune systems regenerate. During a good nights’ sleep, the skin recovers moisture and metabolizes water-soluble toxins for detoxification.

-Write down things you need to do the next day. That way you will not be trying to recall them in the middle of the night.

If this process is disrupted, this will result in poor water balance and that leads to dark circles, puffy eyes, and dryness of the skin along with fine lines.

-Make your bed comfortable by investing in good mattresses, restful pillows and quality sheets. That will make you look forward to “cozying up” in your bed.

As you can see, sleep is not only a cornerstone of our health but also our looks.

-Use a touch of Lavender scented essential oil to your bedroom. Lavender is a classic sleep inducing Aromatherapy mainstay.

In order to have a good night sleep there are some simple things we can do before bedtime-Go to sleep before 11pm. The body does most of its recharging between hours of 11pm and 1am. -Do not change your bedtime hours. Even on the weekends, try to go to sleep and get up at the same time. -Avoid eating grain, refined sugar snacks and drinking alcohol. Although those foods will make you drowsy, the effect is short and you will wake up in a couple of hours later in the middle of the most restful part of sleepthe REM stage. Instead eat some fruit and high-protein snacks. This will help raise your brain’s L-tryptophan level. -Exercising during the day will improve your sleep at night. However do not exercise just before bedtime. The best time to have a physical activity is in the morning. This practice will improve body fat burning throughout the day. -Prepare your bedroom for the best night of sleep. -Keep the temperature in the bedroom below 70 degrees. The study’s show that keeping the temperature in the room between 65 to 70 degrees is optimum for a good night sleep as this mimics your body temperature during the night. -Make the room as dark as possible by closing the doors and shades on windows. Light in the room can disrupt your internal clock. -Keep your phones and alarm clocks at least 3 feet from your bed. We are dependent upon electrical devices all day long, so “unplug” for the night. You can check all the messages and news in the morning.

-Try wearing an eye mask to bed. For both my husband and me that one simple thing has dramatically improved our sleep experience. -I also like to read something spiritual or uplifting before bedtime. That is why I get a printed copies of “The Eden Magazine” and keep them on my night table. I always find many wonderful stories and photographs that make my dreams so much better! I hope you will find some of my sleep remedies helpful, bringing you a beautiful night of sleep every night. To your health! Margaret

SOUL COURAGE

GOOD GRIEF

By Tara-jenelle Walsch

“I’m going to die tonight.” she said. The television still running in the background. “What??” I asked, startled. “What do you mean?” I pleaded, now sitting directly in front of her. “Honey, I just want you to know that I have a strong feeling I’m going to die tonight.” Tears covered my face as she went on to explain, but I couldn’t hear. Time stood still, wrapping me in a suspended bubble of disbelief. And in that moment, my mother’s words had passed the baton to grief. Suddenly everything got real. The next day, I was forever changed. Witnessing her death opened me to a new dimension of life. My journey with grief has brought me deeper understanding and connection with my soul and reason for being. I’m told this is one of the exquisite side-effects of inconceivable loss. That when grief is felt full-on, we begin to vibrate at its intensity and gravitate with higher levels of our consciousness. Life, as we once knew it, becomes surreal. Grief has a way of putting us in a place of extreme presence like this. Distractions don’t distract, or at least not as easily. Past annoyances suddenly roll off our feathers. An ethereal sense of enlightenment surfaces as if we’ve been shaken awake for the first time. And profound clarity and wisdom seem to come out of the woodwork of our mind. In contrast, everything else in life seems vastly unimportant. It’s as if we’re in the twilight zone, when we look around and see that life still goes on regardless of the incorrigible loss and pain we’ve endured. Stores are still open, people are still shopping, laughing and making absurd posts on Facebook. Anyone who has experienced this level of grief is familiar with beautifully bizarre space it puts you in.

57 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

Still, grief has been given a bad rap. In the past, common perception of grief was one of mental suffering and disorder. And still there remains much judgement around the proper intensity and timeline of grieving. If we’re the one grieving, this may leave us feeling the need to justify our emotions to others. It can be exhausting explaining why we aren’t happy, which may instinctively lead to either pulling away from others or concealing our real feelings to appease another.

bid ourselves to feel grief, just as we do with joy, anger, and other emotions. Many people are tentative to open their hearts to grieving, but by consciously choosing to feel and express deep sadness and pain, the healing affects can be even more powerful. As well, we are witnessing all aspects of our experience in physical life, not just self-selecting those we deem as “good, positive or acceptable.”

Fortunately, humanity has come a long way in psychological understanding and spiritual development and can now identify grief as a natural emotion for the losses and hardship we experience.

All that being said, some people choose not to grieve. This is usually done subconsciously as a form of self-preservation for fear that it will be too painful. There are also those who consciously choose not to grieve and attempt to ignore their feelings.

Yet, grieving is not just associated with the loss of a loved one or beloved pet, we can also feel profound sorrow from relationship heartbreak, losing our vitality and health to old age or disease, or losing a longstanding job or home. We may even feel grief for not being given the opportunity to experience certain things, like motherhood.

This may happen if the person feels they need to be strong for themselves or others, or perhaps they don’t have time for grieving because there is too much work to be done. The mind has a built-in survival mechanism that will make up all sorts of reasons to avoid being uncomfortable.

Although it may not feel like it at the time, grieving is extremely healthy for our physical well-being and spiritual growth. It gives us the gift of feeling our emotions to capacity and moves the emotional energy of that grief.

But resisting grief will not make it go away. Avoiding it just pushes all that deep despair further down inside you, giving you the temporary illusion that everything is better.

The ability to move or harness energy empowers us with the realization that we are the master of our energy. This can be one of the most valuable navigators in life, and is quite preferred to simply letting your energy take you where it may.

The most unbearable thing that we can do after experiencing great loss is try to control our hurt and live in a world without feeling. In fact, one of the things that can heighten the pain of grief is the actual resistance of it.

Moving grief energy in this way is exposing it to the light of our awareness and awakening ourselves to a higher consciousness. Like a rock that has nested in the ground for years on end, if you turn it over and expose it to the sun, underneath you will find dark, moist earth with bugs and worms running for cover. Our “underneath” is very much the same, only it is inside. Most of us spend years deeply nested in ourselves, earthing in one position. We may occasionally tilt our inner rock over a bit, but if we see bugs squirming about, we likely gasp and return the rock back down. We have a habit of sheltering our pain. Grieving is a choice Whether we’re aware of it or not, we either allow or for-

58 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

It’s thought by many that resisting grief will protect them from pain, but just as a rock can harvest dampness and bugs if not moved for a long time, by resisting grief, we’re merely sitting on top of our pain. It still resides underneath. What to do with it all Grieving may feel brutally painful at the time, but it’s not something to fear or try and make go away. In fact, on the contrary. When we can embrace it as a part of our life experience it can actually be quite beautiful. When choosing to grieve consciously, we’re aware of painful feelings of loss that reside in us and we choose to feel and express them anyway. Trusting the process of grief like this is one of the most courageous demonstrations to ourselves that we honor our soul’s journey.

When we allow ourselves to drop into our inner abyss, and freely, without constraints or judgement, explore all that resides there—we’re able to confront what we once feared. Soon we will build a level of comfort that allows us to go deeper each time and ultimately get to know ourselves at a level we had never before. The more we feel into the depths of grief without fear, we come to realize that it can become a dear friend by helping to define our life experiences with more clarity, and ultimately understanding ourselves at a deeper level. There is no timeline for grief, this is a sacred process and doesn’t have to look a particular way. It’s important to take as much alone time as needed without feeling guilty, and remember that others are there to comfort you and support your process, when you’re ready. As undesired as it may feel at the time, it’s also helpful to engage in a light physical activity, like taking a walk. Watch as the birds soar through the sky and the leaves sway in the wind. See the beauty of life all around you and breathe it deeply into your heart. Feel your loved one right there with you in that moment. Thank them. When you step into grief fully, there’s a sense of glory that awaits. A glory that emerges as you recognize your ability to love deeply and continue connecting with others beyond their physical existence.

7- Talk to others about your loss and pain. Allow them to comfort you without any feelings of guilt. Here are some things I do to ease the loss of my loved ones, that might also be helpful for you: • Visualize yourself hugging them • Talk to them out loud • Thank them out loud • Sing to them out loud • Funnel your love for them to someone or something else • Say hello to them when you walk by their photos • Recount a wonderful memory of them as you lay your head down to sleep • Include them in your life, asking them for guidance, if needed

Roadmap to Conscious Grieving 1- - Intentionally think about your loved one, breathing deeply into your feelings for them. 2- Surrender into any grief that is present and wants to come out. 3- - Drop your shoulders, relax your face muscles, closing your eyes and open your mouth slightly. 4- Allow yourself to ex-press the grief out in whatever way it wants; it may be crying, smiling, rocking, singing or even screaming. 5- Imagine your loved one is right there with you and talk to them out loud. Share with them anything and everything without editing yourself. 6- Keep photos and personal items of your loved one around you. Visit places and do things that remind you of them.

Untwisting

The Karmic Tangle

By Maresha Donna Ducharme

60 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

Take heed and listen to your deepest needs. Your neediness is the key to your redemption. That which you feel you need is truly what you must give. Whatever you think you need is simply an unconscious force trying to convince you that you do not already have everything you need. In giving that which you want, you help and love others. This is how the universal energy returns to the giver, tenfold.

If you have the desire to progress on the spiritual path, then you must realize you cannot do it alone. No matter what you think, how comfortable you make yourself, or how much money you have, if you do not get help from a source and resonance that has a higher frequency than, you cannot move forward from where you are. One’s desire and willingness to proceed on a path is why one visits holy people and holy places. It is why we go to church. It is why we undergo initiation. It is why we search for a path to walk upon. You will stay where you are for an indefinite period of time until you say, “I’m in a holding pattern; I’ve got to move from here.” There may appear to be movement in your life, but is it an ascending movement? Or is it only a movement from side to side in this dimension of polarity, from yin to yang, yang to yin, and back and forth on the karmic wheel? The back and forth groove feels like change when we move from one pole to another. In fact, we are caught in the karmic groove recycling our unconscious behavior. Only when your heart has been ignited with the desire to receive the next, new level, can you find a way to proceed and be successful. When you untie a karmic knot or tangle, you have succeeded. When you say, “I am ready,” then you can set things up to help you succeed. Make a petition for your ascending movement, whatever that might look like. You might do a fast, go on retreat, or enter into initiation. Do not be surprised if you begin to realize grace, synchronous events and blessings to help you, even when you say Yes and do not really understand what it is you are saying Yes to. We do not always know what we are ready for because the karmic tangle is unconscious and therefore we cannot see it. We do not know how to untangle what is unconscious, and that is why we need help. It is not what you think. In going forward, something must always be given up

so that something new can be received. When you give something up, (what you think you know or how you want things to be) a space is created. That open space allows for the new level, the new awareness, to come in. Whatever you are giving up is something you no longer need, but you do not know that because you do not know what the karmic tangle is that is keeping you back. Whatever it is, you do not need it because it is the reason you are in a holding pattern. It may be something you are comfortable with, something you do not want to let go. That is the test. Are you willing to change and give something up in order to make progress? Some of the time you will get insight once you have gone through the process and have received the new level - you may understand something you did not understand before; it will come into consciousness and you will say, “Oh! I see.” However, we are not always given insight and yet we have made progress. We know we have made progress because internally and energetically we are different. Transformation has taken place. It is not always understood rationally. It is “realized” within us. It is all up to you as you earn your way day by day, but you cannot progress without help; you have to have an accelerated resonance to bring in the new. When you are advancing academically, you seek out the right college, or find a teacher who specializes in what you want to learn. Someone who has mastered the intellectual territory can help you understand and expand your intellectual knowledge. In the spiritual realm, it is the same. That is why people go to church, or to synagogue, and why you go into the sweat lodge on your hands and knees. It is why you seek higher teachings from a teacher. It can be why you have your altar set up at home so that you can pray there every day and make it an active portal between yourself and God. You charge it, feed it, and nourish it. You keep it alive so that you may be connected to the stream of light and consciousness.

61 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

The tangle, or knot, is a challenge because it is unconscious. You do not realize there are actions you are taking right now that are holding you back. Right now you are doing something that is making you unhappy and frustrated, but you do not know what the core of it is or what the source of it is, because you cannot see it. The tangle is always a 180-degree twist. Whatever you are thinking about how this situation or that person is making you unhappy or frustrated is exactly wrong, it is off course 180 degrees. It is something, from your twisted vantage point, you believe to be real and in which your personality is invested. Years ago a woman attended a Bernie Siegel seminar. She had 4th stage cancer and had to be brought in from the hospital, on a stretcher, and placed in the back of the auditorium. Her husband had cheated on her very early in their marriage, and they subsequently separated. She felt that he disrespected and disregarded her. It felt very personal to her. To get revenge and to make his life miserable, she refused to divorce him. In a moment of clear light, and in the process of a guided forgiveness meditation, she was able to untwist her tangle. In her epiphany, she saw that he was not to blame for her frustration and unhappiness. She really got it. In fact, none of his actions were about her all. She divorced her husband, thereby setting him free and herself as well. Her cancer went into complete remission. This is a dramatic example, but the twist, no matter how subtle, will block your forward movement. The most powerful and beautiful part of this understanding is that you have the power within you to progress. You make the petition, do the inner work, whatever it is, to move yourself forward. It is up to you. The part that is up to you is whether or not you answer the call to progress. Beings in the spirit world are always waiting for you. They are always on standby, holding vigil for any soul who is saying, “I will, I’m ready.” When that happens, they rush in to your aid, and they help you through. The wisdom held in the words of the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, teaches us in the most simple words, how to untwist the 180 degree tangle. The prayer asks the Lord to give you the ability to pardon any injury you have suffered, to cultivate faith when you are doubting, for you to allow hope to be present in the face of despair, to let light shine into darkness, and for you to find joy when suffering sorrow. When you feel the need for consolation, turn 180 degrees 62 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e March 2018

to be the one who gives consolation. At the time you feel misunderstood, rather than trying to draw understanding to yourself, to be the one who embodies understanding for another. Each of these acts require that you let go of your position in unconsciousness and turn in the exact opposite direction to be that which you are wanting from outside of yourself. You then become the giver instead of the taker. “For it is in the giving that we receive: it is in the pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in the dying that we are born to eternal life. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.”

Opening of a Closed Heart By Jayita Bhattacharjee

Fear emerges when we get seeded with doubt. Trust seems to be dangling in air and we lock our hearts, veiling our mind-sets, clogging every pathway of releasing fear, rushing away from the channels of a healing communication. Let love flow like at times a steady brook and then with its wild current but just go with the flow as love is the doorway to the spiritual awakening---the gateway to an enlightenment. As you unlock your heart, you will have another glimpse of the world in a newer way that can possibly be the entrance to a deeper awakening, a richer understanding of this cosmic world. This is when you cultivate your spiritual awakening---all this while, your pain stems from your past trauma that stood in the way of engaging your heart. But to live richly and wholly is to be in touch, to taste the joys and sorrows of life. You make sense of the vastness of nothing, things fall into place again with a loveliness of meaning. …Be open in receiving the flow of love…let love in …instead of burying your fears, embrace them…do not seal your heart…let love unlock it as its music never dies. There is a broken piece in all of us… but in a moment of trust and tenderness and you slip into the sea of empty space where you trust again in the giving and receiving flow of love.

Your heart no longer has to endure wretched loneliness… your fearful emotions fade away in a distant past and the stab of pain that once penetrated you…loses its power over you….and you get through the labyrinth of love…you no longer feel caged as you face the dawn of truth that it is time to break free. Vulnerability is a beautiful feeling of free-falling into the unknown, watching the crumbling walls of guard crash around you. Be achingly vulnerable. The moment you touch and embrace the art of forgiving, you burn down everything that stands in the way of your moving with the flow of life. This is the magical moment when you release your pain in the memory of past and … by doing so you emerge from the past…a whirlwind of change sweeps you by….By dancing with life in the richness of present moment…the years of pain fall away….and it dwindles to a memory that can only drift back in time …but it is a tale of the yesteryears….and the immersion in the richness of present moment can take you to the cradle of a timeless serenity. God seeded us with love at the holy moment of birth. As humans, we are always in search of love. As life touches you, you are touched…it is your awareness of you as a seed of love that sprouts and life as a heavenly flower starts to unfold its petals of wonders for you… How you face life…how you meet life from a faraway distance or with a gaze too close …that is your story…how you run away from life locking your heart, for how long and how you muster your strength to meet life again…is your love story …a love story of you and your life. Grief came with its own message to write it on your heart…but it has a momentary hue…but you are the eternal glory of heaven above…twinkling in the painfully painful night sky of a million aching souls. Let your heart release the past and melt in the joy of the present …so it can stir the life within others. No lesson goes in vain…as in the trials of life, you the uncut diamond turns to a gem lighting your soul, a heart that can swim with a smile over the depth of sadness…your bosom may ache but a splendor so heavenly was born… out of a diamond in the rough. This life is yours to witness…whatever it is …the broken or unbroken lyrics…said or unsaid words….spoken or unspoken agony…it is all yours…it is your story…but as you let your story unfold from the mystical place of joy and gloom of life…your soul speaks to other souls as it is alive and awake to the subtle shade of reality that swim in this sea of life. Release the pure fragrance of love…. Love always brings us a plethora of relationships…the daring adventures of intimacy…and we hurl ourselves out into the unknown…the path is so full of surprises that we uncover feelings that we never felt before…but why

embracing fear as even the purest soul never escapes life without suffering a heartache. When you love, the seemingly fearful becomes so very lovable and the love that you carry within, gives you the light, the freedom to unshackle you from the shackles of fear and you sign the treaty of peace with your soul---this is the time to burn out the pain and set the heart free from its cage, it is a flight to an eternal freedom--no holding back, it is a soaring into an enshrined liberation. It is the ancient fear of wilderness of love, the adventure into the unknown, it is the fear of walking into the storm that holds you back, but the sun rising in your soul whispers to surrender and embrace love and life as this is the gateway to bliss….and the setting sun invites us to peace, no matter what the day brings, you embrace it as a lesson or a blessing. This is the Godliness of gift that you carry within you. This is when your music never dies, the flute never ceases, the story of what you did with the stones that life threw at you. This is your love-song.
