One of My Karmic Debts

I was around 30 years old and just beginning my last year of nursing school in Utah. I experienced something that will never be forgotten. In my heart, I believe a Karmic debt was being repaid. I helped save someone’s life.

I also wonder if the Perseid meteor shower helped open doors between worlds.

How it Unfolded

A reservoir had been recently completed in the mountains near Salt Lake City, and the moon was full. This was the perfect excuse to plan a hike around a lake at night.

I found a friend that was excited to drive up a canyon and explore a new trail. We got a late start because of an assignment I was completing. I still remember the frustration of my evening plan being thrown off.

The tweak in my schedule might have saved our lives.

A car was pulling away when my friend and I were almost to the trailhead. I also noticed an older truck tucked into the trees on the side of the small parking space. I remember getting an unexplained and uncomfortable feeling from the truck.

The lake was at the base of a canyon with very little traffic, maybe one car an hour. Many people were just a couple of miles away watching the 1996 Perseid Meteor shower.

The local news promised a great light show; this occurred while an event unfolded that changed the direction of several lives and families.

My friend and I were just beginning our hike when we heard someone calling for help. A young woman was saying she had been shot.

Using a very small flashlight, we could barely detect the silhouette of a person about 20 feet in front of us.

Adrenaline and something else woke up in my body. We asked her to stay there so we could get help. My mind went back to the uneasy feeling I got from the truck earlier. I also didn’t feel comfortable going into the dark with potentially an active shooter.

We drove back up the canyon, where many people were still enjoying the night sky. My friend had long dreadlocks, and I was probably sporting shorts and Tevas. I’m sure we looked a bit unsteady and emotional. Our quest for help was not immediately answered.

We returned to the victim, hoping someone had taken us seriously.

That night one person died. I never saw his body. The woman that asked for help was 18 years old. She had been shot multiple times and left for dead.

When we returned to where the shooting took place, everything began to feel different. The best way I can describe it is that part of me felt connected to another time and place, and part of me was terrified of being shot by the side of the road.

There was no one that would hear us call for help. My friend waited by the side of the road, hoping to flag someone down.

I was able to wrap a blanket around the woman and apply pressure to some of her wounds. For several hours we talked about her job and anything that was not related to our current situation. I remember feeling like there was a cloak of energy surrounding us. Possibly it was protecting us, but it took me to a place where our hearts connected.

Eventually, a police car arrived. When the officer took in the scene, he called for a medical evacuation. I remained by the young woman’s side until the helicopter’s medical team arrived.

She had been shot multiple times, including her head. It was a miracle she was alive, stable, and talking.
