H Houshang Touzie From Theater to Hollywood
8 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
H
Houshang Touzie was born in Iran and is a very accomplished film and television actor, producer and director. His interest in acting began at an early age while he was in school. He began performing in local theater productions and continued to do so for several years, until his professional acting career took off in 1982 when he portrayed a major character in the film, Ferestedah. In 2012, Touzie was highly commended for his work in the Academy Award® winning film Argo, alongside Ben Affleck, who was also the director, Bryan Cranston, and John Goodman. Touzie also received high praise for his work in such films as, The Mission, America So Beautiful, and Checkpoint. He has appeared in numerous television shows including, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, The Punisher, Homeland, and NCIS. Touzie married Shohreh Aghdashloo, an Iranian-American Academy Award® nominated actress, in 1987, and together have a daughter, named Tara Touzie, who was born in 1989. Tell us a little bit about yourself: I was born and raised in Tehran, Iran, in a middle class but culturally rich family. I immigrated to the United States in 1979 and resided in New York City until 1985. I was already an actor when I came to the United States and was very eager to pursue my career here. I was working at the La Ma Ma Theater Group, as well as doing a few bit parts here and there until a lead role in a feature film took me to Los Angeles. I started to get more and more work and I was being featured in movies and television shows. Right around that time, I also started my own theater group called Workshop 79. I chose this name to honor the theater group I was in back in Iran. The number 79 is the year it all came to an end in Iran. Soon after I started the theater company I met my wife, Shohreh, and a few years later we had a daughter together, Tara Jane. These days I continue to write, act and recycle religiously out of my home in Calabasas. What inspired you to become an actor? My family loved to watch movies and they were also avid readers. My oldest brother was an artist, writer, and musician, and so in that artistic environment, I too started

writing, mostly short stories, but also some poetry. Later I started doing impressions of my teachers or family members. My mother hated it and would always say, “Stop! God forbid you’ll become an actor!” I became an actor shortly thereafter. What kind of roles do you prefer? I prefer challenging roles with some substance and meaning. I don’t really mind if I play a hero or a villain as long as it is written sensibly and interestingly. If I have to choose I would say I enjoy playing comedic roles. Tell us about a time in your life when you had a very bad day but had to stil go on and perform. Working as an actor in theater, I’ve had so many tough performance days! I remember when my father passed away, that was very difficult because I had to perform in a very comedic play. Then there was the time in 1994 there was the Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles. Shohreh and I had a sold out show and we still had to show up. We asked the ticket holders what they thought we should do and they voted unanimously that the show had to go on. So, we performed despite feeling multiple after-shocks during the performance. Thankfully nothing happened! What are the most extreme physical and emotional changes you've had to make to prepare for a role? When I get a part, I begin to study the character and the first thing I work on is their physicality. This really helps me get into character. I then think about what kind of hairstyle or body type would help me become this character. My biggest transformation was when I was playing the Shah of Iran in a play. Because he was a real person I had to change my appearance to fit his. For example, he had a slim figure, so I had to shed some weight and I also had to wear a prosthetic nose to capture his look. It was an uncomfortable process but in the end, it was worth it. That became one of my favorite roles I ever played. When was your first role as an actor? My first role as an actor was when I was only 17 years old. Ironically, I was playing the part of an old man! The character was a former wrestling champion in a small town. His story was that he was getting ready to wrestle for the last time.
11 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
What attracted you to begin a career as an actor? Everyone in my family was an avid movie-goer, everyone except my mother that is. I heard all about famous movie actors like Humphry Bogart and Bette Davis long before I ever saw them on screen. I remember one of the first movies I saw in an actual theater was a Charlie Chaplin film. I think that’s where my deep-rooted love of comedy comes from. I had a moment watching Kirk Douglas in Spartacus where I realized I had to become an actor. Which character has been the toughest for you to morph into? As I mentioned before, playing the Shah of Iran was very challenging for me, but most recently I played a blind Afghani man on “N.C.I.S. Los Angeles,” and that was a real challenge for me. It was especially challenging because it was not a stage role but an on-camera role. Please tell us about any new projects you are working on? I’m currently working on my next project, which is for television. I have a long journey ahead! I’m also writing a play that will be presented on international stages next September. I’m very excited about this play because I will have the opportunity to perform with my wife once again. Please tell us about some of your past theater performances? And do you have any new plays coming up in the near future? Over the course of my career, I have written and directed 17 plays. Two were in Iran and the rest took place in the United States. All but one of my plays was written in Farsi, and one in English. I staged my first play in the United States in 1985 with only four performances in California. My next play was staged a year later with twelve performances. It traveled internationally and was a huge success. My third play had only two performances but my fourth play, which was staged in 1992, was staged over five hundred times all around the world. Unfortunately, Iran was not one of them. All together I have staged more than a thousand performances since leaving Iran. Which charity causes are close to your heart and why? My wife and I both love doing charity work. I have worked with the “Mahak” charity for years. They focus on childhood cancer. I like to focus on charities that help children. The closest to my heart is the “Mother Miracle” school in India. With my wife, we sponsor nine young women who are educating themselves. We do whatever we can and we are open to help in any way. 12 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
Argo 2012
As an Iranian actor who has played many different roles in as an actor, which one did you feel you connected with the most and why? There are two that come to mind immediately. One was a guest part on “Homeland,” season four. My character was a very powerful army man, the head of the revolutionary guard of Iran. Even though he was a very powerful man he would speak softly and behaved humanly. This is what drew me to this character. The second was for the show, “Bones.” I played a politician whose son was killed in a mysterious way and who was determined to find out what happened to his son despite the difficult and painful path. As a father, I could relate deeply. What are your future career plans? Since I immigrated to the United States I’ve had this dream
to build a theater for the Iranian community.I envision a theater where productions can be mounted all year long, by many different artists, and where I provide opportunities for actors, writers, and directors, to exhibit their work; a place to bring the Iranian theater community together in Los Angeles, to strengthen it, and bring it into the next generation.

17 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
The Eden Magazine sat down with Arens, in Los Angeles, for an interview. Astrid Arens, thank you for being here with us today. You are always travelling all around the globe with so much vitality and passion for your work. How do manage this? What’s your secret? Whatever I do, I do it with a strong belief that I do something meaningful and good. In gratitude for life and for what I have received, I give something back to others, something that allows them to advance, and to be more successful. The key to success is a new way of communicating considering and using the newest findings in neuroscience, a communication that is emotionally attractive: Neuro-communication. I have made my passion for Neuroscience my profession. Authenticity is very important to me. You are authentic when you allow yourself to be the person you are and when you live in harmony with your inner feelings. I live my life and I am in balance with my vital energy. Have things always been this bright and positive for you? No. My path in life has been pretty rough. There were times when sunshine was rare. It seemed to be out of reach like an expensive luxury item. When you come across as different to others, some people might exclude or dismiss you. I was very successful in business. I loved networking, communicating and sales But in my private life I wasn’t successful. I was on my own. Thirty years ago men could not understand what my priorities were. There were times that some people tried to keep me small and to control me. Then when I became the first woman to receive the European Sales Master from Procter & Gamble, some people were keeping me at a distance. Some considered my hard work, my discipline, my beliefs and enjoying my success as negative and egocentric. Some went so far as to tell me that it would be better for me to keep a low profile, to stick to the household duties, and that I was never going to find a husband because I was too different. One day when I was sitting on my sofa with my two boys on either side of me. There were tears in my eyes as I grieved over the separation from my husband, the loss of my marriage, and the loss of pretty much everything I once owned, I felt so much pain all over my body. Shortly thereafter I even had to stop driving my car because I felt physically drained and exhausted. It was a long way up from the bottom, and a long road to travel for me to finally find myself where I am today.
18 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
How did things go on? How did you manage to stand up again? It might sound strange but life gave me a sensational opportunity. I learned the lesson that it was less the situation but more the way we look at the situation and the way we talk to ourselves. The way I was talking to myself caused me a lot of stress. I began changing my attitude and I began changing the way I was talking to myself. I started using different language patterns and words. I started moving away from the negative communication I grew up with and moving towards appreciative, respectful, accepting and positive language patterns. Language patterns that make everybody, including my children, feel better. As a result I was more relaxed, I had a higher level of energy, I was persistent again and I had more vitality. It was like I had found a new elixir of life. And so I began my new way of life. I looked forward. I started believing in myself again. I was happy to see my children positively developing and I was once again performing successfully in business. The new language has made me believe in myself and in my intuition. I have decided to only look ahead and leave the past behind. My children gave me back the energy and the faith in the good things in life. The new way of communicating allowed me to heal. Happiness, gratitude and balance came back over time. What is your message to other people? What is motivating you today? My message is: Words are magic and magic changes the world. I want to spread this message all around the globe. It is time now that in business we communicate in a new way, to protect our most precious resources: people. It’s about time now that we see the difference women can make in business and that we also start to allow even more women to succeed in business. It’s time that in leadership and in sales we show our appreciation to others and put “humanity” back in the center of what we do. It is time to value and support those people who are helping others. This is what saves our future. Language bridges across borders. Words are energy, life and future. “Words are energy, words have power,” please tell us what you mean by this? Words are sound waves. Words are energy and they create emotions, which control our life. With language we create our own energy field. The law of resonance says,
that similar energies find each other, so we draw these people into our life. Change your communication and you’ll change your energy and attraction. What can someone expect when he books a speech? A mega successful speech: Exciting, varying, inspiring content in combination with reasonable practical examples, many tips suitable for daily use and high sustainability, which will spur you into action. This program makes dreams come true, you can reach your goals, professional and private, and you’ll get a better quality of life, more vitality, more motivation, and in turn better health. Is this a wish or reality?
Thousands of the participants of my speeches and seminars can confirm that the inspiration and tips changed their life, and that they got more vitality and motivation. Leading global companies like, Porsche, Procter & Gamble, Delphi, etc., count on this knowledge concerning leadership and sales. What is your vision? “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God; everything was made through this and without IT nothing becomes what it was; in HIM was life…” (John v. 1, Chapter 1). For me it means: The secret of voice – words are magic and with magic we change the world.

Winter Blues and Broken Bones How to Make Sure You’re Getting Enough of The Protective Power of Vitamin D3
By Kristin Grayce McGary LAc., MAc., CFMP®, CSTcert, LP.
24 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
My family and I lived in a suburb of Chicago when I was a child. The weather was often overcast and gloomy. When it was sunny, my parents applied sunscreen. Unfortunately, when I was 10 years old I fell off a jungle gym and fractured my right arm. It wasn’t a big fall, I shouldn’t really have broken any bones, but looking back I suspect my vitamin D levels weren’t optimal. Vitamin D is often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin”. It is produced in your skin in response to sunlight and is a vital organic compound supporting the absorption of calcium and protecting bone strength, supporting immune function, and regulating mood. Deficiencies in Vitamin D can lead to weakened bones, autoimmunity and conditions like osteoporosis, and mental illness such as Seasonal Affective Disorder, more commonly known as SAD. Vitamin D-eficiency can also lead to: • Type 1 Diabetes • Cardiovascular disease including heart attack • High blood pressure • Cancers of colon, prostate, ovaries, esophagus, and lymphatic system.
• Muscle and bone pain • Broken bones • Autoimmune diseases such as Hoshimotos Thyroiditis, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis • Allergies There are two forms of Vitamin D; ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Of the two, Vitamin D3 is the preferred form for human consumption. Vitamin D3 is Good for Your Brain D3 helps regulate the conversion of tryptophan to serotonin, which is the essential neurotransmitter affecting a variety of cognitive functions including mood, decision-making, social behavior, impulsive behavior, and social decision-making. Many psychological disorders associated with brain chemistry and function, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression, show low brain serotonin. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is positively impacted by combining light therapy with Vitamin D 3.
25 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
So how can you help your body get the right amount of protective Vitamin D? While sun exposure is helpful, it is often not enough. It is worth considering a daily dose of a good quality Vitamin D3 supplement. Obviously, dosing Vitamin D3 depends on your weight and current Vitamin D3 status. The first order of business would be to get tested and look at the data. Generally, children need less than adults.
Zinc isn't stored long-term in the body so it’s vital to eat foods that contain it or to supplement. Zinc helps vitamin D work in cells as well as strengthening bones. Oysters have a high concentration of zinc.
In my experience, most doctors order 25 dihydroxy vitamin D test but this is the inactive form and may not give you all the information. I suggest also getting your Calcitriol 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D blood levels checked and if required ask your doctor or holistic health care provider to recommend an appropriate dose of Vitamin D3 for supplementation.
Boron is a trace mineral needed in small amounts by the body. Fruits, leafy vegetables and nuts contain boron. It works with vitamin D to help bones use the minerals they need such as calcium.
A healthy vitamin D blood level is about 45-75 ng/ml, depending on an individual’s unique biological needs. The Vitamin D Counsel recommends an average of 50 ng/ml. As part of my practice, I've learned to individualize things, some people do better with vitamin D levels that are 75ng/ml, and others lower. People with known autoimmunity, autoimmune disease, immune dysfunction or those living in northern states should have their levels tested regularly. In order to work optimally, it is worth supporting Vitamin D3 supplementation with other important mineral cofactors that help the body to utilize D3 properly. In addition to the D3 supplementation I also suggest adding magnesium, boron and zinc. Here’s why: Magnesium is necessary for your body to make energy from the food you eat. It helps to control blood pressure, blood sugar levels and it keeps your heart beating regularly. The Vitamin D Council believes that the daily amounts of magnesium recommended by the Food and Nutrition Board aren’t enough to keep your body healthy and supplementation is recommended. Some research studies show that your body needs between 500 and 700 mg a day. Zinc is a mineral mainly found in the muscles and bones. It helps the body perform many vital functions such as fighting infection, healing wounds, making new cells, facilitating the use of carbohydrates, fat and proteins in food, promoting strong growth and development especially in babies and young children through adolescence and helping with taste and smell.
26 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
(*If you are taking any medications that are intended to suppress your immune system consult your doctor before taking zinc.)
To reiterate, vitamin D3 plays a central role in a healthy mind and body which is why a balanced diet and supplementation is vital. Supplement Recommendations There are a few on the market that have a very healthy carrier oil called Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) or olive oil. Look for this in your supplement. Avoid products that contain soy, cotton seed, rapeseed, and safflower oil. Some doctors believe an adult dose of 2000 IU/day is adequate, others promote 5000 IU/day, some individuals may temporarily need as much as 10,000 for a short period of time to help boost their levels.

Slowing Down the Tongue to Soul-Speed: Why the Way and How Much We Talk Matters Greatly By Angela Dunning I love this phrase, "Slowing down the tongue to soul-speed", from Marion Woodman’s incredible book Leaving My Father’s House: A Journey to Conscious Femininity, as it speaks volumes to me about how connected we are to our body and soul when we speak. "Soul-speed" is where we generally become less and less verbal, and, that when we do speak, we speak from our soul and heart where there is meaning to our words, rather than the usual clipped, ready-prepared sound-bites which try to fill the slightest bit of empty space.
29 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
You know when you’re in the presence of someone who’s really mastered the art of connecting to and speaking from their mind-body-soul because they speak at a slower pace. They leave pauses and allow you to finish, rather than interrupting you mid-sentence or second-guessing your replies. We all hate this when someone does it to us, yet how many of us still fall into that same trap and finish others' sentences for them? People who live a soul-based life, indigenous peoples, and those who've spent years engaged in spiritual and meditative practices noticeably speak much less, and when they do, they tend to speak much more slowly, in a considered, thoughtful and clearly connected way. You can literally feel they are speaking from their body and soul rather than just their mouth. You can hear the depth of their voice rising up from the belly, via their heart and eventually picking up some thoughts along the way, before carefully easing their words out into the world. Contrast this to the rapid, spilling-out that takes place from most peoples' mouths... My years of gentle work alongside horses, a non-verbal species, has shown me that our very human tendency to be overly-verbally and mentally focused can get in the way of making a meaningful and beautiful connection of depth with them. It also hampers our ability to fully connect with ourselves at the deepest, truest level. It blocks us from our heart and its desires, and our body and its needs. It also stops us from hearing the gentle breeze of our soul's whispers, so light that if we even think or speak too loudly we risk missing them as they float softly by.
The rest of the time, I believe, they just learn how to tolerate us and most likely tune-out the vast majority of what tumbles out of our mouth at break-neck speed, so fast usually that we don’t have any clue as to what or how we are really saying to others; what a superficial way to go through life... I find now that when I speak, I feel a pull of focus down into my belly. No, in fact, it’s lower than that: Down into my sacrum, my centre and the very core of my being. And, I feel I have to connect with what I feel there first to find out what my true meaning is. Then I can try to form the words that rise up through my body, to my chest (heart); then my throat and only then, finally, allow them to come out of mouth. Rather than those that want to fly straight down from my brain and out of my mouth; seemingly of their own volition. By slowing down to soul-speed it also becomes possible to more easily follow one’s own true path. We're less likely to be influenced or swayed by the outside world and its temptations. It becomes far easier to stay true to oneself and to speak what is helpful, rather than what is expected or what we feel we ought to say, in order to be liked and accepted by our peers. It becomes possible to move through life in a soul-full way, or to put it another way: in a more horse-like way. Reference: Leaving My Father's House - A Journey to Conscious Femininity, Marion Woodman. Shambhala Publications, 1992.
e
When we talk at anything other than soul-speed around horses, in my experience, the horses either switch-off or walk away from us. However, when we regularly engage in mind-body-soul reconnection practices such as mindfulness and embodied heart-based interactions with the horses, and selfreflective, soul-based practices such as journaling, being alone in nature, creating pieces of art and so on, we do indeed slow down, both our thoughts and our words, to soul-speed. This is why I think the horses turn and come towards us: as soul-full beings themselves, they can finally feel us in our entirety. We are complete and full of ourselves when we speak from our heart and soul. And boy, do they love this. 30 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018

LOOKING GOOD & FEELING GREAT
The importance of good nutrition By Margaret Tomaszewicz
32 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COMe January 2018
So here we are, in the beginning of a New Year. Each January most of us make New Year resolutions to lose weight, quit smoking, save money, get fit, help others or eat healthier. In this article I would like to focus on the importance of good nutrition. Most of our diets are based on processed food, which are high in saturated fats, sodium, sugar, added hormones and chemicals. Because of our fast paced lives we eat too much packaged food, sugary snacks and take out food. It’s no wonder that the rate of cancer, strokes and diabetes are going up every year. Unhealthy eating habits also have a huge effect on out mental health causing depression, stress and also anxiety. Eating a well balanced diet is not only good for our health but can help us stay looking younger, by firming our skin, smoothing wrinkles and giving shine to our hair and nails. Foods rich in protein, vitamins and minerals will also provide an anti-aging effect. I am not telling you something that you don’t know, we all are aware of this fact. The challenge is to actually do something about our eating habits and to be good to ourselves in the New Year in order to feel and look better!
Fish like salmon, sardines, tuna and trout are high in omega3 fats, which helps to reduce inflammation and slow down free radical damage. An additional benefit -Omega 3 fats also gives us shiner hair and helps to keep our skin moisturized to prevent wrinkles. Eggs contain anti-wrinkle amino acids that have powers to produce elastin and collagen. Pumpkin, sweet potato’s, carrots, apricots, cantaloupe, yellow and orange peppers are high in beta-carotene. This helps prevent dry skin and protects skin from sun damage. Green tea, acai, pomegranates, citrus fruits and prunes are also high in antioxidants and flavonoids that fight against free radicals which speeds up the aging process. And my favorite is the dark chocolate, which helps reduce skin redness and aids in moisturizing the skin. All of these great choices in food are not only delicious but also great for our health and good looks. By adjusting to a well balanced diet, we will all have no problem in keeping the resolution of having better nutrition in this New Year! To your health! Margaret

DAZED AND CONFUSED IT IS AN EMPOWERING TIME WE LIVE IN By Michael White Ryan
34 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
LANGUAGE OF SPACE Lost in a flash, moments come and off they go into neverland. Experiences gone forever, no longer in sync, and forever out of now-time. Time, could it be real or some false misunderstanding and how is any of this, relevant to all of YOU. Experience has come and off it went, but judgement has grabbed time by the hand, and now like an image/photo it constantly regurgitates from the whim of our free-will consciously chosen choice. And in that moment time reappears and we move back, back to the exact same energetic influences and I feel good. Don’t you love the fact that feelings never lie!!! LOVE, oh my heart goes out to all, I feel the warmth within. I am here to serve, I give back and serve to make this a better world. This is a comfort zone, I feel good about myself, my social identity contains my every beingness and I AM once again I AM. The parading mask becomes the choice I show up in for acceptance, love with integrity in hand. Blessed are we, in all our childlike innocence. But who are we, when others have foretold that ownership to self, leads to suffering, when after all, identity is our is-ness, the is-ness of I AM. Standing on the mountain top I see clearly in all directions. Standing in my shoes I only see me, clearly, the regretful, the unworthy, the judge, the lover, the compassionate, the hurtful and I see all my infinite conscious numbness selves. We consciously search for “what is truth” while deliberately unknowingly look in all the wrong places, a thousand times over. And yet, here we are, the intelligent ones. We, the omnipresent incarnated battery functioning object with powers beyond imagination, forgotten. Is there not something missing, is there something so invisible, we are unable to see? We read the books, sit at the guru’s feet, suck our thumbs, fall on bended knees to live in faith and hope for eighty/ninety so years. What have we taken for granted, what are we afraid to ask and are the answers something we are constantly measuring against another, who supposedly has what we desire and have the intention to manifest, ahhh thank heaven. The year 2017 has given us the influences necessary to face reflection, a deeper look within. Good or bad, confusion burst forth in all areas of life. Now, here we stand with a new perceived foundation of our, I AMNESS. Unfortunately for some, deaths distraction of another, was always close by. In years past, this would be an emotional tragedy, nowadays we accept it as, the way of life. The influences of the planetary movements and the changes in our earth, is slowly orchestrating an evolution in human consciousness and emotional maturity. Bang, we are so blessed by these gifts which appear as divine! We acknowledge
with Michael White Ryan that the times are changing, therefore uncertainty and confusion abound. The underlying question could be? How has our level of awareness upheld its end of the bargain, in updating its frequencies, “to become” aware of our forever-changed surroundings. Awareness is the third-eye of everyday occurrences, when we determine all values in relation to self!!! We are determining their worth, niceness, love, anger, relationship, and the ten thousand things, from a position of blindness. Obviously, this is not me and of course it’s obvious this is not you, but if it were, just saying…can we use this as a gauge to grasp an acceptance of WHO we have so energetically, and so vigorously determined to become??? Most of anything we may know is, life is a mistress, so full of excitement, filled with rivers of adventure to captivate and “spellbind” the wonder of “all” our human consciousnesses. Trust, then the risk of fear slowly dies into ashes. Trust what and who and when and where is all a sham, for the only trust necessary is to be given at home within self, given by our own beloved judging consciousness that has placed those heebie-jeebie-shackles on life for reasons even it does not understand. Every bit of life is in our power to create, expand, evolve…if only we could find where we left it. Christmas blessings to one and all and yes LOVE IS ALL AROUND

Extending the Spirit of Unity throughout the Year By Tara-jenelle Walsch
There are certain times of the year when humanity is collectively caring, considerate, compassionate, tolerant, and patient. When people smile readily for no reason and the general air is one of contentment. When we drop our walls and feel an unexplainable sense of connectedness to one another, worldwide, no matter our differences in age, sex, race or religion. We are effortlessly less irritable, more forgiving and identify with others from a place inside that doesn’t use words; our hearts. Mostly we witness this happening over the holidays or during a world crisis of some sort. It can feel quite magical when we all miraculously come together like this with no questions asked. Then something interesting happens. The holidays roll by or the crisis gets remedied and we turn inward again. Our walls go back up and the gears are switched to “business as usual.” Slowly, but surely, we find ourselves slipping into impatience, intolerance and occasionally internal judgment towards others, when just weeks ago we felt an inexplainable connection with seemingly everyone… even strangers. So here we are again, just a step out of holiday bliss and standing at the beginning of new year. Our hearts have been opened wide and now we’re at a crossroads: Do we continue to live in collective unity and act with love and tolerance or unconsciously slip out of presence and back into auto-pilot mode?
37 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
If it’s true that humanity as a whole, if given one wish, would choose world peace, then I believe that the first path, living in collective unity, not only feeds world peace but also makes for an enriching and meaningful life experience. So what’s holding us back from making the magic last longer than the blink of a holiday or coming together in a crisis?
your thoughts and behavior now that the holidays are over. 4- If you feel yourself slipping into thoughts of separation, remember that unity is the source of who you are on a soul level, and feel your heart smile in celebration of that. 5- Always know that the energy you carry and project makes a difference and choose to make it a beautiful one that supports world peace.
Possibly because few of us are mindful that we even stop connecting in this way to begin with. And even if we’re mindful of wanting to stay in unity mode, most of us don’t know how to naturally get that feeling back. The good news is that unity is not a feeling that we need to “get back,” because it is already the source of who we are. We are innately one with each other, on a soul level. When we remember this, it can immediately put us at ease knowing that we don’t have to change our core being or even try to find that place inside of us again. Instead we can focus on honoring and celebrating our unity with all by resisting the haunting illusion that we are separate from one another. Demonstrating this through our interaction with others is one of the highest forms of loyalty to our soul and the soul of the world. Everything that we do, matters. The energy we carry and project affects the world in a million imperceptible ways. All of our individual energies can connect and elevate humanity when we collectively share them in this way. So go ahead and keep the holiday magic going all year long. Keep smiling, keep shining and sharing your heart with others, and watch as it has a domino effect and awakens a sense of unity among us all. Roadmap to Extending the Spirit of Unity throughout the Year: 1- Notice the difference in how you interact with others during a holiday, special event or world crisis versus on any typical day of the year. 2- Feel into the joy that this level of unity with others brings. 3- Stay mindful of your interaction with others as January moves forward and watch for any changes in

Ring in the New Year with Joy By Nancy E. Yearout
As we ring in the New Year I can’t help but to share with you that on January 1st of each year, a new chapter in your life begins! Each New Year sheds a bright new light on all aspects of our lives. It feels as fresh as the new fallen snow to start out anew. This is the perfect time to sit down with pen in hand (not the computer) and physically write down your goals for the coming year. When you use your energy to physically write your aspirations on paper it gives those aspirations and ideas power. Your hopes and dreams hold energy. This is the key that is necessary to bring them into fruition. What is it that you would like to accomplish in the year to come? What would bring you the most joy if you accomplished it? Don’t be too safe with your list, in other words be real. We all have the ability to achieve everything we desire. All ideas take hard work and positive attitude from within yourself to become reality. The goal is for us to be happy, joyful, and fulfilled. Go ahead, take that leap of faith, and ask for the new house, the new car if you need one and the perfect mate if that’s what you desire. If things in your life are not as you want them to be, only you have the power to change them. The Universe is your canvas: create the picture that you want for yourself. However you paint your life is how it will be. Paint it, and watch it materialize. Imagine that you are in a play and you are the director. You have the power to write your own script, the scene and the dialogue, to what you want your life to be. Many people have asked me if it’s all right to make a request for someone else’s benefit. (I look at it as a prayer) Of course it is, but if it’s not for their highest good, it won’t happen. The Lord always knows what’s best for us, even when we do not. There may be a lesson to be learned and you don’t realize
it. We are on this planet to learn lessons to elevate our souls and to raise our vibration. My wish for you this New Year that you will make all of your dreams into a reality! Happy New Year!

THE PORTRAIT PAINTER GOES WHERE FEW OUTSIDERS CAN
How Artist Juan Bastos created an extraordinary pastel portrait of Baroness de Lassus
42 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
with Juan Bastos
By Juan Bastos Photos by Tom Parry I was invited to the 90th birthday party of the Baroness de Lassus and to do her portrait at her Chateau in France in the spring of 2014. The Chateau de Valmirande was built near Toulouse in 1893, and houses several ancestral family portraits, many done in pastels, which have been very popular in the region since the Renaissance. After the unforgettably stunning party for several hundred family and friends, which ended with a lovely display of fireworks, I carefully studied the various rooms in the Chateau as to where to set the background for the portrait. This was not the first pastel I had done of the Baroness. The previous ones had simple backgrounds and were done in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where her eldest son lives and where I first met the Baroness in 2010. So this time, I chose to depict her sitting in her large ballroom surrounded by her exquisite antiques. In the background, there was a piano and a marble bust of an ancestor atop the pink marble fireplace mantel, and various oriental carpets let parts of the hard wood floors show through. During the first few days I was there, I caught her several times sitting in the room staring out the window looking at the Church of St Bertrand in the distance. The room was decorated with many old pastel portraits of her ancient family that traces its roots in the region to the 17th century. That was why her son asked me to do her portrait in that media. During the first few sittings, a friend of the Baroness would come to visit her and play checkers, while I studied the lights and shadows and tried to nail down the right information on the tones and details. A second trip was needed, so I returned that summer. There was another party to celebrate the Day of the Virgin Mary, which was a long-standing family tradition. I not only I worked on the portrait during my summer stay, but had a chance to once again visit with members of her family. They all spoke Spanish and English fluently, and on occasion, I would climb up to the roof and look out to the grand Pyrenees Mountains, just a short distance away, and draw inspiration from the setting.
Juan Bastos is widely known for his several hundred portrait commissions over the past three decades in the U.S., South America, and Europe. He has also been featured in a number of one-man and group shows, the most recent being his November 2017 retrospective of 40 California portraits at Denenberg Fine Arts in West Hollywood. Gratitude only works if you thank yourself first By Roxana Jones
Millions of people around the world are beginning to understand the importance of gratitude in their lives. For centuries, slowly but surely humanity has been embarked in a journey of empowerment in which, remembering very ancient universal laws such as the practice of gratitude is key to the creation of the happy and successful life we all deserve and came to live. What are some of the scientifically proven benefits of practicing gratitude? 1. Gratitude improves your physical, mental and spiritual health. 2. Gratitude allows you to sleep better. 3. Gratitude reduces aggression and enhances kindness. 4. Gratitude improves your self-esteem and self-love. 5. Gratitude creates better relationships. When it comes to the many blessings gratitude brings, the list is endless‌
45 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
Knowing the impact that gratitude can have in our life, we all have quite a clear idea of how to be grateful to life in general, and to those with whom we share that life with. However, there are not many who are practicing self-gratitude. Somehow, many still have the disempowering belief of not being as important as the others when it comes to giving thanks. This needs to be changed immediately. The only way is for you to go inwards and begin this intimate relation of gratitude with your true and highest Self. Why is that necessary? The reason is because you are not being truly grateful with life and other people if you are not being grateful to yourself. Are you thanking yourself every day for everything that you are, and everything that you have achieved? You should. It is you the only one who has brought yourself to where you are, and you should be in awe of it. From that ‘positive pride’ and appreciation it is easy to achieve a permanent state of self-gratitude, which is the state you want in order to feel self-empowered at all times. Perhaps it may sound as a selfish act that of giving thanks to your own Self. But then, how are you supposed to attract the love, happiness, and success you know you deserve, if you don’t know how to be thankful to that Self that is responsible for bringing EVERYTHING into your life? If you already see yourself as a sovereign being, who has transcended victimhood and who is fully aware of your responsibility for everything that happens in your life, you must practice self-gratitude every day until it becomes one of your most positive and empowering habits. You can thank yourself for many things. Here are only a few but very important ones: 1. Be grateful for not giving up. Look at you: here you are, after all the lessons life has offered you, feeling strong and ready to continue the journey. Your resilience is priceless, so thank yourself. 2. Be grateful for that beautiful heart of yours that brings so much happiness and gratitude to others. It is your heart the one that makes so many others feel so loved. Your love is infinite, so thank yourself. 3. Be grateful for the moments of weakness that allow you to choose differently.
46 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
It is by the use of contrast that you are becoming a higher version of you. It is not so bad to fall down sometimes, as it is the fall what allows you to get up and reach a higher you, so thank yourself. 4. Be grateful for making mistakes and being human. It is your willingness to learn from all the mistakes you have experienced in the past what makes you so precious, so thank yourself. 5. Be grateful for the little things that are not so 'little'. Your smile, your thoughts, your capacity to forgive, your willingness to help others in so many ways, are only a few examples of all the ‘little’ things you are constantly doing that are contributing to bigger and better things for many others. In fact, at the 'invisible' level your 'little' things are helping in such a vast and 'cosmic' way that your mind is not able to grasp the impact you already have in the world, so thank yourself for this, and for so much more. Everything in your life depends in the amount of love you have for your Self. This self-love can only grow when you are grateful not only to others but also to that beautiful and powerful Self of yours. Until next time,

Excerpt from the interactive book, A Course in Mastering Alchemy Tools to Shift, Trans-form and Ascend
Navigating
the Chaos of These Shifting Times By Jim Self and Roxane Burnett
50 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
There’s a Shift of Consciousness occurring within the planet and within each of us. The noise and drama of the world is getting louder and more painful. This Shift affects all of us spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. It’s affecting our political, social, religious and economic institutions; the environment and our relationships. This wave of change is also affecting our awareness of what’s possible. On one hand, many dividing lines are becoming less distinct. People are gathering to-gether. On the other, we are watching separation and fear all around us. We’re moving from the third-dimensional experience of separation to a way of life that allows for greater possibilities, connected communities and expanded ease and wellbeing. However there’s a period of transition between where we currently exist and this new “Heaven on Earth”. This transition we are now in sometimes is rough and uncomfortable. To reach that greater life, that fifth dimension, everything that’s of a lower vibration must be brought to the surface, out into the light of day and released. This is why such a high degree of conflict exists in the world right now. As unpleasant and uncomfortable as it is, this increased unrest is a good sign that the imbalances are leaving, soon to be replaced and uplifted. As more of us awaken, we are beginning to remember who we are. We are recognizing imbalances in our lives and we are asking ourselves: “What’s really important to me? What truly makes me happy?” Tools to Rebuild Yourself Understanding who we are requires a shift of awareness. There’s a place within the center of our heads that acts as a command center, a place where clear decisions are made and actions are set into motion. However, as we grew up and trusted the opinions and beliefs of others, we stepped away from the center of our heads and gave away our power to those who said they had a better idea of life than we did. Reclaiming the center of our heads is necessary if we are to experience ease in this transition. Once we are grounded and in the center of our heads, the next step is to rebuild our aura. The aura, or personal energy field, was originally held within a series of geometric shapes. One is known as the Octahedron. The Octahedron is an antenna aligning and reconnect-ing us with our own, higher level of conscious awareness. We begin to remember who we truly are. From this level of consciousness, the Higher Mind becomes available. The Higher Mind is quiet and vast.
There's a detachment, focus, clarity and curiosity. It’s through the Higher Mind that conscious contact with the Soul begins. Here we can access the Sanc-tuary of the Pink Diamond within the Sacred Heart. Here we can return Home. It’s now time to release our baggage and return Home to the heart of Creator. Everyone is going Home to the higher dimensions, but not everyone is going Home on the same timeline or with the same ease and grace. Going Home is precisely what the Shift is all about. The thirddimensional world that was once defined by old truths, old structures and old beliefs of those around us is no longer working. That third-dimensional game is being dissolved. You are stepping into a life in the fifth dimension. You are big and significant. You have an important role to play in this transition and you have a great deal to contribute. It’s time to be the teacher and leader you came here to be.

I often smile to myself when thinking back on how I got started. It's been a long, crazy, fun journey. Some may say I've accomplished more than most do in a lifetime, yet I feel I'm just getting started. I never really had a clear picture of what I wanted to do when I got older, but I did know that I wanted to be my own boss— mostly because I despised being told what to do. I grew up in a small, blue collar town on the East Coast. My father always encouraged me to think big and go after my dreams, and I began to believe him when being repeatedly told I could do anything I wanted. Since childhood, I’ve known I was going to leave my home town and explore all that the world had to offer. Being fiercely independent, I decided to home school myself for the last two years of high school and graduate early to get a headstart with adult life. Not long after, I moved to Los Angeles with not a single connection there and only seven hundred dollars in my pocket. At that time, no one had yet made professional networking 52 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018

I'm a people-person and believe that solid connections are the building blocks to everything. Through years of hard work, thousands of rejections, wrong decisions and learning curves, my fire and passion is what has kept me pushing forward. I'm constantly inspired by hard working female entrepreneurs and the utmost dedication and commitment they have. I find people who persevere to achieve their dreams, incredibly commendable. One person, in particular, who I greatly admire is self-made billionaire Lynn Tilton—she has such an amazing story behind her success! One of the many things that brings me great joy in my work is supporting others through the showcasing of their personal life story, and knowing that it is also encouraging and empowering any listeners at the same time. Menopause: How to get the Japanese Diet effect without going on the Japanese diet By Sally J. Duffell
All we hear about these days is how healthy the Japanese are and how they live longer than anyone else in the world. The women don’t get menopause symptoms, and had never even heard of hot flushes until western researchers turned up and asked about them. They have less cancer, osteoporosis, dementia and heart disease.
So you look at the Japanese diet and find out it’s raw fish and lots of veg and don’t forget the seaweed, the rice and the soya. No spuds, nothing processed. Feel miserable already? Rather have hot flushes followed by osteoporosis and an early death perhaps? Or is there a way we could literally have our (Japanese) cake and eat it. Yes!!!
54 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
Because here’s the big thing, here in the West, we never used to get hot flushes before the industrial revolution either. The word menopause was invented in 1821. So what were we doing before then that was helping us? It was certainly not eating soya. Although if you look at some marketing, you would think that it was. They tell us that soya contains plant hormones and make it seem that there’s no other way you can get them. In reality over 300 foods contain plant hormones and most beans, peas and legumes contain high amounts. Once you know that, it’s easy to see that we had our own cultural traditions that gave us lots of plant hormones. So Pease pudding anyone? Lentils and hock? Mushy peas with your fish and chips? These are all old-fashioned dishes that are rich in plant oestrogen. Apart from baked beans on toast they have been largely forgotten. Yet it’s easy to start adding portions of beans and peas to whatever else you are eating. Plus, there are lots of modern ways to get plant hormones into your diet. You might be eating them already from supplements that you buy in the chemist to help menopause symptoms or osteoporosis. If you look closely at them, many of them contain red clover. This has been used for generations for menopause symptoms, long before there were drugs and supplements. And here’s the exciting thing, you can sprout it on your windowsill in just a week without soil. All you have to do is water the seeds and they will grow into a little double leaf plants, that you can harvest. Red clover is not the only thing you can have sprouting away on your windowsill. Mung beans are also packed with plant hormones and are even easier to grow, as you only get them to the root stage, which takes two to three days. You might think sprouting is the preserve of beardy weirdys and Birkenstock wearers. But not so, we have been sprouting in Europe for thousands of years. The moment records began, it is there. You probably grew good old-fashioned mustard and cress when you were a kid. We have been sprouting it for centuries and it’s always been known as a health food, curing everything from arthritis to scurvy. The Victorians called it their “Ginseng”. What they didn’t know was that it was full of both vitamin C (more than lemons even), plant hormones and cancer fighting chemicals known as glucosinolates, Modern science is now showing us this, but sadly barely anyone is growing it anymore and the stuff sold in most supermarkets as “salad cress” is mainly rape seed with a small amount of cress in order that they can legally call it that.
Another reason the Japanese diet is so good is that on top of the fish, seaweed, and vegetables, they are into sprouting too. They love sprinkling alfalafa sprouts on many of their dishes, mung beans are a staple and they put sweet red aduki beans in their cakes. This will give them a plant hormone top up. Not just that, sprouted foods are packed with other nutrients and interesting plant compounds, sometimes containing 90% more than the full-grown plant. This means you can eat small amounts to get big benefits and it’s a great way to get the Japanese diet effect without going on the Japanese diet. Of course, I want you to eat as healthy as possible but on days that it’s difficult, sprouting can take up the slack. If you’re wondering why people haven’t thought of this before? Perhaps it’s because having a tray of beans and greens growing on the windowsill doesn’t fit into our fast paced, ready made world. However, it only takes a couple of minutes a day to water your sprouts, it’s easier than starting a vegetable garden or deciding to bake your own bread and it can be a little corner of your life that is all natural, all home grown, something you are doing for yourself and your own health. So, you don’t have to go on the Japanese diet to have a healthy menopause. And by the way the Japanese diet increases the risk of strokes which is another reason to do things our own way. We can look to our traditional diet plus turn to modern ways of sprouting ancient foods, and grow our own plant hormones the way nature intended.
d Sally J. Duffell has been growing, teaching and writing about bean sprouting for many years. She extensively researched the scientific proof behind their rich bounty of plant hormones, their effects on menopause symptoms and the diseases of ageing. Dream Patterns
Breaking and Making Your Patterns By Jonson Miller
57 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
Simply recognizing your dream patterns is valuable. Now you will take the next step and dissolve the unskillful waking-life patterns they represent. Sometimes, recognition of dream patterns alone can produce results. In the case of undesirable patterns, sometimes just recognizing what was unconscious might break the pattern in your waking life. A dream pattern, or even very rarely just a single dream, can point out to you the source of a behavior. That behavior might, for example, be your reaction to a particular person. Why is it that one particular coworker seems to annoy you no matter what he or she does? Is he or she actually just annoying? Well, what if you kept having a dream about a childhood acquaintance that annoyed you or picked on you relentlessly? While noting the appearance of this character in your dream report, you suddenly remember the child’s last name. It’s the same as your coworker’s! Perhaps a moment’s embarrassment or a quick laugh will now be enough to dispel your reaction to your co-worker. Most patterns, however, will require some personal work. Often, simply acknowledging an undesirable pattern in your waking life isn’t enough. You may have to work to replace that pattern. As you do so, you will find confirmation of your efforts in your dreams. As you replace the waking-life patterns, the dream patterns will dissolve. Recall my dreams with hostile animals that I described in my book. Recall how the dream had surprised me, but that I came to recognize the generalized anxiety that the animals represented. Simply acknowledging the pattern was an important step, but I had to do a bit more than this. As I said before, I began to actively look for moments of anxiety, fear, and anger throughout the day. When I identified these moments, I acknowledged them, recognized that they were probably a defense mechanism or an ingrained pattern that no longer served me, and then I let them go. After a few months of this, the moments of anxiety became fewer and fewer, until I stopped noticing them. As the anxiety disappeared, so did the dreams. I had weakened the waking-life pattern and, thereby, dissolved the dream pattern. Here is another pattern of mine. As an adult, I experienced a series of traumatic events and losses over a period of a few years. This, of course, generated much stress
58 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
and may have triggered old emotional defense patterns. Although I did not recognize it for a while, these patterns generated a dream pattern that, in the end, gave me insight into how I was responding to the trauma. A dream pattern emerged that included a cluster of items such as being in jail or prison, being chased by monsters, and being attacked by people. The attacks were especially vivid. In the dreams, I would very much feel the attackers’ hands on me. It was frightening and very real. In the dreams, I would try to fight back, but my punches were ineffective, as if I had no strength or substance. There was nothing I could do to hold off the attackers. After noticing the cluster of items as a dream pattern, I connected it to the traumas and losses. But it took me awhile to recognize the dynamic in the dreams that revealed exactly how it was that I was responding to the events. With continued reflection on these dreams, I realized that they revealed a sense of vulnerability or helplessness in the world. That didn’t seem totally unreasonable, but it wasn’t the sort of response I would’ve expected to these particular events. So why did I respond with this feeling of helplessness? I then recognized that the events had triggered a response that I had developed as a child to a different traumatic event that had made me feel vulnerable and helpless back then. With this insight, I could begin to work effectively on changing the pattern. I did this by cataloguing all of the reasons why I was not helpless and vulnerable anymore, with the most important reason being that I was now an adult. I reminded myself of these facts repeatedly and engaged in further reflection. Soon enough, my dreams began to change. At first, I became able to fight back and hold off my attackers in the dreams. And, soon after, the dream pattern simply disappeared. I had overcome my previously unconscious sense of helplessness and my dreams reflected this fact back at me. After you identify and interpret undesirable dream patterns, you can work on replacing the unskillful wakinglife patterns they represent. As with my own examples, you will need to reflect on and identify how these patterns are actually playing out in your waking life. Identify the actual moments when they’re operating. Perhaps you are engaged in self-sabotage that keeps you from succeeding at work or in some other aspect of your life. When you become conscious of such moments,
you can then control how you respond to them. Success will require constant self-awareness and repetition to dissolve the patterns. Perhaps you will find that you need some help with this. If so, consult your doctor, a therapist, clergy, or even just a friend to help you. See the Resources and Organizations list at the end of the book if you need help finding a psychologist. Regardless, as you work on this, look for changes in your dream patterns that reflect changes in your waking-life patterns. Dispassionately acknowledging one’s responses and defenses is easier said than done. There are, however, methods that can help you. A daily, seated meditation practice can provide a foundation for greater mindfulness throughout the rest of the day. Instead of seated meditation, you might practice qigong or tai chi. These are moving meditation practices that have been practiced in China for millennia to promote health and for spiritual cultivation. I provide here a simple start to a mindfulness practice. See the “Suggested Reading and Viewing” section for books with in-depth instruction or the “Resources and Organizations” section for meditation and qigong retreats or groups where you can learn and practice. A daily meditation practice can provide a strong foundation for self-awareness throughout the rest of the day. Here is a simple meditation practice that you can do for even just fifteen or twenty minutes each day: Sit, either in a solid chair or on a meditation cushion, in an upright and stable position. Place your hands in your lap or on your knees or thighs. Just do so deliberately, so that you are aware of your body and its posture. Don’t allow your body to flounder. If sitting is a problem for you, then stand, but do so without locking your knees. Simply breathe naturally from your belly. Be aware of your breathing. Allow the breath to fill your belly and then recede. Your attention will wonder away from your breathing. That’s natural and fine. Don’t get frustrated or judge yourself. When you become aware of it, just bring your attention back to your breathing. It’s as simple as that. Being mindful during the rest of the day is a bit trickier. To start, use your breath. Throughout the day,
whenever you remember, bring your awareness back to your breath. Let it relax you and refocus your awareness on the present instead of worries about the future or things you have no control over. Make a habit of it. Do this especially when a strong feeling, especially anxiety or anger, hits you. Ground yourself in your breath and allow yourself to observe your feelings and where you feel them in your body. Simply be aware of your reaction. Be aware of the source of those feelings, not in the other person or the traffic jam or whatever else is external, but in yourself. Be aware of why you’re reacting to that person or even in the way that you are. I’m not at all saying that you can’t or shouldn’t be anxious or angry, just that you should be aware of it and its source. As you become more mindful and self-aware, you will be better able to penetrate the waking-life patterns that your dreams are pointing to. Moreover, you will start to become more aware of the deep source of your patterns. With awareness comes the ability to accept those patterns, determine whether they’re helpful or not and, if not, to let them go. As you do so, write down all of your observations about yourself and your dream patterns. Write up your interpretations of your dream patterns in your dream journal. Write about the waking-life patterns they represent. Note your efforts to change your waking-life patterns and how those changes affect your life. And, of course, identify and discuss changes in your dream patterns as a result of the changes in your waking-life patterns.

In his fascinating book, Treasure Hunt: Follow Your Inner Clues to Find True Success, Rizwan Virk describes the difficulties of recognizing clues and which clues to follow…
The Hard Thing About Following the Clues By Rizwan Virk
When I was a kid, I was a big fan of adventure films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the legendary archaeologist, Indiana Jones (played by Harrison Ford) sets out with his friends to find the treasure. It didn’t matter whether it was the Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail or some other random treasure – it was exciting to watch the twists and turns that led to the treasure. The problem, for all of these heroes, was that although there was a treasure, the map to find it wasn’t presented all at once … there would be one clue, and only by following that clue could the next clue be discovered. Sometimes, our heroes would encounter obstacles ranging from Nazi soldiers to new construction over old historic sites, which would prevent them from finding the next clue. Sometimes they would be led down a false path, and would have to backtrack to get back on the right trail. If only we had the Treasure Map laid out clearly in front of us, we could follow the clues to find the treasure of True Success, just like Indiana Jones. In our own lives, we are constantly receiving clues in the form or our intuition, gut feelings, hunches, synchronicity and even in our dreams. By far the most difficult part of these tasks is not recognizing the clue—but recognizing the path of action the clues may be leading you to try out—a possible path or future that is being laid out in front of you. Sometimes, the clue needs to be interpreted; at other times, the clue and the directions being implied are quite obvious. Here’s a simple example to chew on.
61 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
CASE STUDY NO. 10: Living between the Worlds In the fall of 1997, four years after the initial launch of our product, I left Brainstorm, the start-up that I had co-founded and had been running for four years. While I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next, I kept seeing images and statues of mermaids in various places in New England—statues at restaurants, pictures on walls, in gift shops, etc. This was made more unusual by the fact that I had been to these places before; I just hadn’t noticed that there were mermaids on the walls and everywhere I looked. This is a perfect example of how the “invisible hand” of the inner mentor works—it points out things in the environment that may have been in plain sight before but hadn’t been noticed by our conscious minds. The inner mentor then produces the feelings of unusual-ness so that you recognize you are being given a clue! I had no idea what this mermaid imagery meant, but I kept seeing it—in shop windows, in books, and on and on. Whenever I noticed one, I would have that “funny feeling”—the “odd sensation” that something was in play beyond my normal sight. This was a symbol, I realized, and, as with symbols that come in dreams, I understood that it might need interpretation before I could recognize where the clue was leading me. As I thought about possible interpretations, I came to the realization that a mermaid to me represented someone who lived in between two worlds—the fish world of the ocean and the human world of land. Many a good movie (Splash, The Little Mermaid) has been made about the challenges and difficulties that mermaids face by being “in between” worlds. At the same time as I began noticing the mermaids, I had started thinking seriously about going to California to live in Silicon Valley. But I still liked the idea of living in Boston, and didn’t want to sell my condo. I was ruminating on some workable solution to the problem and wanted to become “bi-coastal” for a time—I could try out the west coast while still keeping one foot on the east coast. Many of my friends, however, doubted that I could live in both worlds—the east and west coast—or cope with the difficulties of doing so, particularly going back and forth every few weeks, not to mention the cost and need for a stable income. 62 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
I took the mermaid clue as a confirmation that it was possible to live in both worlds, and I went ahead and spent the first six months of 1998 living on both coasts, traveling back and forth every few weeks. It turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made, not only because I had such a great time in California. More importantly, it gave me time and space to begin writing, which led to a second career, becoming an author. The mermaid theme of living in two worlds was reflected in my thoughts concerning my career: to be a computer software entrepreneur and a writer—two very different parts of the business world, but it is possible to thrive in both. This is an example of over-determinedness, or multiple levels of meaning packed into a single one: the clue pointed out something that was an issue for me in my life at that time (east coast vs. west coast), as well as an overarching theme in my life (co-existence in two worlds— business and spiritual), and pointed toward a solution as being right for me at the time. In fact, “living between the worlds” is an apt description for someone who pays attention to the wisdom that comes to us in our dreams and through synchronicity, and who also lives in the sometimes harsh but rewarding world of business. To Act or Not to Act—Bring the Right Brain and Left Brain Together The fundamental question remains: how do you know when to act on a clue and when not to? Therein lies one of the paradoxes of synchronicity—the more you “trust yourself ” to follow your intuition, the more often you will get intuition that’s helpful and meaningful. But how do you get the confirmation that will let you trust your intuition more? It sounds like a chicken-andegg question. I assure you, however, that if you start writing down your clues, and even take tentative actions to try out the directions suggested by them, you’ll start to navigate with more confidence. You don’t always have to take literal action based on the dream or clue right away; you can reflect on the more general direction or theme that’s being expressed by the clues and symbols and take small steps to move in that direction, before you look for more validation.
This brings us to the Clue Lifecycle, a way to bring the Left Brain (the logical side) together with the Right Brain (the intuitive side) to navigate our own personal Treasure Hunt
twining of cycles is very representative of how patterns emerge when we are learning to follow our inner guidance in the real world. The important thing is to learn to take the first few steps of following that uncanny feeling down unexpected paths using your intuition, your dreams and synchronicity to guide you. This could be simply walking into a second-hand bookstore and randomly finding a book on a subject you were just thinking about, or taking a moment on your way to work and driving down a road that you’ve been passing by day after day but have never explored. Or it may start by calling someone you haven’t talked to in a while but whose image just popped up in your mind.
THE CLUE LIFECYCLE Learning to Navigate in Your Own Way While it may not be immediately apparent what a clue is telling you, if you learn to trust yourself and “go with the clues,” you’re bound to get very good ideas on the messages and to intuitively feel out the possible paths that you are being “led” on by the “invisible hand.”
Taking the first step like this can lead to interesting adventures that you may not have anticipated . . . and that is what makes it so much fun.
Even if you don’t know exactly where a clue is leading you, and don’t take any action right away, by noticing and reflecting on the clues you are receiving, you’ve started on your own unique path to trusting your inner guidance as you build up your Book of Clues. By learning to navigate in your personal and professional life using your own personalized clues, you are devising your own personalized navigational system. This system, like that of the Phoenicians long ago, will allow you to hone in on areas of importance and fulfillment in your life. Using the Clue Lifecycle—intuition, interpretation, confirmation, action, validation and reflection—is an on-going process. Once you start it, the process goes on indefinitely, because you are always being led to the right place at the right time in your life. Like episodes of a TV show that reveal a season-long plot over time, your individual Clue Lifecycles will reveal the larger pattern of your Treasure Map to you over time. You may find yourself following the cycle, stopping the cycle, and letting it go, only to find yourself picking up this thread a year or more later, spurred by a new clue which reminds you of the old one. Natural Remedies For Flu Virus Symptoms By Dr Vic Kalman
Flu Virus remedies for flu virus symptoms; is your body ready to battle the flu in 2009? Are there alternative medicine flu treatments and natural home remedies for the flu? What is the flu? Flu is a common ailment that all of us suffer from. Influenza, commonly shortened to "flu," is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract. Flu appears most frequently in winter and early spring, when weather changes occur. Most of us take over the counter medication to help the symptoms. In some cases the flu stays for a longer time than in others as each body has its own mechanism of fighting against these viral infections. This mainly depends upon your immunity level and how strong your immune system is. Symptoms of Flu Congestion, sore throat and sneezing are common with colds. Colds and flu sufferers cough, have headaches and chest comfort. You are likely to have a high fever with the flu for several days as well as headache, muscle aches, fatigue and overall feeling of weakness. Body ache and joint pain in many cases are also reported. Flu often affects us during weather change and climatic change. The flu is contagious! If somebody is sitting beside you at a public place and is infected with the flu, it can affect you too. Generally children get the flu from schools. In asthmatic people flu easily leads to an attack of asthma. Breathing problems can make a person feel lousy with flu.
68 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM eJanuary 2018
Home flu remedies A few antiviral medications are available to treat flu. But there are no medications that specifically defeat the common cold. Antibiotics may be helpful if there is a secondary bacterial infection. Some of the home made remedies are to take steam inhalation two times a day. This helps to ease the nasal cavity and helps in breathing normally. Also two teaspoons of ginger with a dash of honey helps in soothing the throat and helping to bring out the mucus. Drinking hot vegetable soups will help keep the body warm and reduce body ache. Also eating easily digestible foods like broth and vegetable stew can help in keeping the body healthy to fight against flu. Turmeric powder and black pepper powder mixed in hot milk also helps to keep the cold and flu away. Not to forget brandy with warm water helps in keeping the cold away. Once the cold is arrested, fever automatically reduces. Natural flu remedies and prevention Most people get afflicted with the flu at least once in a year. Some people can have flu several times in a year. This is a real stress on the immune system. What natural flu remedies are available to us? 1. Flush out the toxins: Drinking hot fluids is beneficial because of their soothing effect on the throat and also the decongestion effect they have on the nasal passages. The time-tested chicken soup really helps! Caffeinated and carbonated beverages should be avoided because they may dehydrate you. 2. Protein intake: Lean meat, poultry, fish, legumes, eggs, and nuts and seeds are good sources of protein. (Though dairy is a good source of protein, it has been found to aggravate symptoms like skin lesions, runny nose and chest congestion in some.) Your anti-bodies are made of protein. So, if your body gets adequate protein, it can fight the infection better. Moreover, most of the protein foods contain good amounts of Selenium, zinc, Vitamins B6 and B12, which play a vital role in improving one's immunity. 3. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is popular for reducing the severity as well as duration of cold and flu-like symptoms. Aim for at least 2 servings of citrus fruits like oranges, pineapple, sweet limes to stock up on this vitamin. These foods are high in flavonoids, too. Flavonoids work very well in reducing the severity of the flu symptoms.
Flavonoids are compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages that have diverse beneficial biochemical and antioxidant effects. 4. Get high on glutathione: This is the master antioxidant known to boost your body's defense. Good sources of glutathione include watermelon, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, collards etc. You can either steam these veggies or consume them as hot, aromatic soups. 5. Stay away from high-fat and sugary foods. They are difficult to digest and may add on to your nausea and 'sick' feeling. Excess sugar has also been found to bring down your defenses and prolong your illness. 6. Get Your Sleep: Let your body rest and recuperate as much as possible. If you are feeling anxious, then after dinner, do some mental relaxation, deep breathing exercises for ten minutes, so you can get sound sleep at night. Now, more than ever before, eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet will the best way to stay away from as well as recover from any infection.

Cancer Treatment Has Its Day By Jeff Witzeman In the last five years, there’s been a quantum leap in understanding and treating cancer. Although much of the modern medical field hasn’t caught up to the causes and natural treatments for cancer, thousands of patients have discovered it through a new group of doctors and naturopaths. It’s really not that complicated. For years we’ve been bamboozled by disproven theories that cancer was genetic, genes mutated hopelessly out of control, or that we needed to trick the body somehow to get well. In actuality, new studies show that cancer is just a symptom of the body being out of balance – the normal metabolic processes have broken down – and it’s possible to get the body back in balance again by fixing those damaged metabolic pathways. In April 2015, the doctor came out of the operating room with a dark look on his face after removing a five centimeter tumor from my wife Kerry’s bladder, and said, “Your lives are going to change forever. The tumor has made it into the muscle wall and we’re going to have to remove her bladder in the coming months.” It just seemed so drastic, and then on top of that, she would have to get chemo or radiation. Fortunately a family member had been to Germany three years prior and was able to give us a different perspective.
71 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
Frankfurt, Here We Come We hopped on a plane and Kerry started treatment at the Infusio clinic in Frankfurt. She was treated for 30 days naturally with Hyperthermia (focused heat), Ozone therapy (drawing blood, filling it with oxygen and then returning it to the body), and daily IVs of Vitamins, Minerals and Amino Acids. No chemo, no radiation, no radical surgery. After one month, the cancer was completely gone! Two months later, upon returning, our new urologist found a tiny cancerous polyp growing in her bladder and now the real healing journey began. The polyp was easily lasered off, but the question remained, “How do we stop cancer from growing again?” That’s where the wealth of new information became so useful. Over and over again we kept reading about this Nobel Prize winner from the 1930s named Otto Warburg, who found that no disease especially cancer can exist in an alkaline environment. Warburg was neglected over the years in favor of a genetic view of cancer, but his views came back in favor with researchers that verified his findings in the 70’s and 80’s. What that means in laymen’s terms is that cancer grows in an acidic environment created by foods that keep the normal body metabolism from functioning properly.
CANCER CAN BE KILLED, available on Amazon Prime Videos. Since the film has been released in late summer, over 50,000 people have viewed it. Numerous patients seeking a way out of the traditional model of toxic medicine have contacted me.
The Power of the Smoothie The main ingredients that create an alkaline environment are fruits and vegetables. Since it’s hard to eat as many vegetables as we want in a sitting, one of the greatest ways to get everything we need is in a smoothie. We load up the Vitamix with as many greens, berries and fruits possible and then add Kombucha and Kefir to load in the probiotics. (So good and so filling!) Other changes that Kerry made were to eliminate refined sugar, cut way back on gluten/bread, dairy and red meat, as they have a direct effect on the gut where 80% of the immune system functions. This one change prevented any cancer from coming back for two years.
Filmmaker Jeff Witzeman is the writer/producer/director of the controversial documentary “Cancer Can Be Killed” that currently is on the festival circuit and available worldwide on Amazon Prime, iTunes and Google Play.
Time to Film it So what to do when you see everyone around you getting body parts cut off and hair falling out? For me, I got a camera and started filming. I told everyone I knew about natural treatment along with doing the research to confirm the science behind the treatment. The stories of two of my friends whom I filmed before, during, and after the treatment and captured their disbelief and pure joy of being cancer free without losing body parts or getting toxic chemo are chronicled in my film titled
72 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM e January 2018
So Many Options Once you understand that cancer doesn’t respond to drugs or hurting the body and does respond to nutrition and detoxification, the treatment options and locations are limitless. The film visits two locations in Florida and Arizona having stunning documented results (90% success rate in Arizona), but naturopaths have also been helping folks all over the US with IVs of vitamins, minerals and amino acids and detoxification strategies that restore the body’s normal metabolic processes. The final frontier will be child cancer as the technology is in place to cure children without harmful chemo. Now we just need some brave doctors and lawmakers to clear the way.
Witzeman was inspired to make the film after his wife Kerry was cured and cancer free after receiving non-traditional treatments in Europe, instead of opting for the often aggressive treatment methods promoted by the U.S. medical community. Previously he worked as an actor, writer and musician. In the 90’s, he starred in such shows as “Frazier,” “Webster” and a Miller Genuine Draft Super Bowl commercial. In 2000, Jeff Witzeman & The Jealous Housewives became the most radio played unsigned band in America.
