Rationale

Maryana Kuznetsova
the timeline describes the significant flights and creations in history that led to the great invention of the airplane. I researched variety of information, but decided to narrow down my comparison to the achievement, date, inventor, distance it traveled and the type of driving force it used. I think it is just enough information to get one’s attention and not to overwhelm the viewer. The audience for the piece is anyone who is interested in balloons or anyone seeking to learn something new. The typographic aesthetic is inspired by the 1800s era. Latienne Pro is the serif used throughout the graphic. It has Victorian character, beautiful ligatures and a consistent line. The typeface is contrasted with a simpler sans serif. The colors chosen are meant to convey a light playful
mood, while the type is consistently black to state the facts in a more serious tone. I chose to put my secondary information in clouds to keep the same aesthetic throughout and not interfere hierarchically with the balloons. The individual balloon information is stylized with the number it is assigned. The system I developed for this graphic heavily relies on lines; either in the illustrations, conveying information, or as small decorative elements. I overlapped the illustrations to give the piece more dimension and movement. They are meant to be flying and interacting with each other, not to perfectly stay aligned in their individual space. I chose to add the frame to the title to tie the whole piece together, it uses the elements from the balloons and gives it more character.
