TINY HOUSE

THE SWEEPING STAIRCASE EVOKES A SE

During sophomore year I was given the opportunity to challenge my creativity with architecture. This project was the Tiny House. With only 1,000 sq ft to work with we were challenged to design our dream homes. The facade, being inspired by the organic curves commonly found in nature juxtaposed with

4

the sloping mountainsides so prevalent in the area, evoke a sense of stability and serenity. The expanse of windows at the front of the home to welcome the beautiful surroundings that so inspired the architecture into the home.

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH As part of a group effort we were tasked with creating an office capable of staffing around ninety employees. The space was to be divided up into several areas for the different divisions such as marketing, production, scouting and other such areas specific to the business. Fuse Records, a company with the philosophy of searching for hidden gems in the music industry for which no one else is willing to look. Basing the concept for the design on this business philosophy we used items such as the Firelight pendants by Tecture to enforce the idea of finding the light behind the rough surface while still creating a sleek look suitable for a CEO’s office.

THE PUERTO RICO RESIDENCE

13

In collaboration with New York designer Benjamin Noriega Ortiz we were tasked to create a two story apartment for a client of his. With the idea that a home should be a culmination of life’s experiences and desires, this home was filled with items that the couple had collected over the years. In the bar area images of the couples favorite drinks are printed on the backs of Ghost barstools. And artist Andrew Atroshenko, a romantic impressionistic Russian artist, was commissioned to make a painting of a ballerina to pay tribute to the wifes history of dancing and her birthplace of Russia.

14

During this semester long project, Benjamin requested the staircase create a vertical experience for visitors when they first enter the apartment to direct them away from the private section of the home and upstairs to the public areas. By highlighting the lacquered ceiling, and Physilia Chandelier from Bespoke Global your eyes are drawn forward and upward away from the private section of the residence and towards the public section on the second floor.

OGDEN PROJECT

19

As the foundation for our Senior Capstone project we were able to have the opportunity to work some of the city planners in Ogden, Utah to help revitalize the downtown area. In a small group we were tasked with creating a multi-use area that would encourage the community to interact and reenter the area. Inspired by the railroads, an important factor of Ogden’s history, we created a junction of sorts for the community to come and shop, work, and live. The sloping angles create an enticing aura, welcoming visitors to come in and look around for a while at the various stores and facilities. The entirety of the project covers approximately 90,000 sq ft.

PERFECT PITCH Inspired by music legends such as Ray Charles and Billy Holliday and the time period in which they reside, the challenge with this home was to create a flow of the casualness of mid-century modern and the formal elegance of art deco. To help solve this dilemma I created an open floor plan to intermix all of the formal and informal areas of the home to ease the transition. The progression of space in the home emulates the transition between these influential time periods. The juxtaposition of classy and comfortable sets the scene for the couple to host a fancy dinner party with all of their friends, dance in the kitchen together while making breakfast, or light candles and take a soothing bath in their new copper bathtub.

THE IVORY ELEPHANT

27

TEXTURE. TEXTURE. TEXT

As a part of our Senior Capstone project we were challenged to create a restaurant. The Ivory Elephant serves pastries, hummus, and vegetables but specializes in teas and coffees from around the world. The design was influenced by Moroccan and Indonesian architecture, where these drinks are most common. The carved river stones, bone 28

white stucco, and terracotta pots evoke a sense of the natural “earthy elements from which the tea leaves are grown. The main colors in this space are the teas and coffees themselves making them the superstars of the space.
