2013 Student Design Competition
concept The philosophy of yin and yang is one that has been around for thousands of years. It is a process of harmonization ensuring a constant, dynamic balance of all things. Like the yin and the yang, the products Sephora stocks are meant to enhance it’s counterpart and balance out the other’s faults. This space is split between white and black, just as yin and yang are. The cosmetics have black fixtures to make the products pop more. Color is everything, so the focus should be on the product and not the fixtures themselves. They should only complimentand enhance the necessary. Fragrance, Bath & Body, Skincare, and Hair are all in white because they give off a fresh and clean feeling. These fixtures are also composed of units, so they can be configured in numerous ways so things can always be moving and changing along with the styles. Branding signs are located all around the store so customers can find the brands that they want to purchase. Also, new and innovative features are located throughout the store. Tutorials and new trends are always streaming on the touch screen monitors located on the Beauty Studio. These are there so customers can see the products, see how they are used, and follow a step-by-step process to get the same look.

The process of design starts with inspiration and moves swiftly into programming and space planning. After many possibilities, the plan with the most potential moves forward to becoming something more. With the branding of Sephora already being so strong, this design was meant to make it more dominant. As soon as customers see the Sephora store, the bold stripes and illuminated red accents attract their attention from that point on. The storefront is also accented with the sleek flame logo on each of the large display windows. This unique flame shape, like the center of yin-yang, is worked into many aspects of this design.
When customers enter the store, they see the stripes that caught their attention burst into the area and go throughout the space as a ceiling feature. This is also used as a source of way finding throughout this Sephora store. All of the fixtures are made of a high gloss chroma by 3 form and have some features that are glass. The fixtures in the space are simple so all the focus is on the products. Sephora can be for any one! It holds a broader inventory for women, but men can find the things they need here too. The products that Sephora offers are meant to enhance what is wanted, there are no boundaries.
