MURPHY Interior Design Portfolio

ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Mary Ruth Murphy, and I am a born and raised Texan, currently living in Dallas. I grew up in a very creative household, with my father being a general contractor and my mother a fashion and graphic designer, they instilled a great respect for design from a young age. I am a recent graduate from the University of Arkansas at the Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design where I received my Bachelor of Interior Design. Along with design my passions include, videography, photography, photo and video-editing, sketching, and traveling.

DESIGN THEORY

Design is beauty, design is inspiring, design has passion, design helps, design is a story At its best, design is a blend of art and function.  When walking into a space, people should feel a deep sense of belonging and inspiration while not being interrupted by functional error. Given that design has a significant influence on everyday life, human interaction should be the foundation of design. Design also has a monumental impact on the environment so it is our responsibility as designers to reenforce sustainability and give back to the earth. It is incredibly exciting be dedicated to design and the ability it has to shape our future and brighten the lives of all.

THE DETROIT 7 FOURTH YEAR 2019 GROUP PROJECT 3 MONTH TIME FRAME 105,000 SF SPACE

SOFTWARE USED: REVIT, INDESIGN, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR

PROJECT BRIEF This site is located in the Eastern Market of Detroit, Michigan. The building used to be a truck maintenance facility. The Eastern Market is an area of Detroit that is famously known for their Farmers Market that are located in 6 different sheds and for their murals that are done by local artists. A priority of this project is to provide a space where people of all ages and groups can populate the Eastern Market 7 days a week instead of mainly on the weekends. To do this, the proposal for this mixed use building calls for a residential sector, a hotel, a coffee and beer shop, food incubators, bowling lounge and courtyards.

PROJECT BRIEF This site is located in Detroit, Michigan. The Butzel Family Center is an integral party of the community, where people of all ages come together. It is also home to important organizations like iDeside and Board of Ethics. This building was in urgent need of a brighter environment and open atmosphere. Despite a tight budget, we were able to transform the interior by adding more windows and using various painting techniques, creating a vibrant and lively space for the whole community to enjoy.

DESIGN BUILD THE LOOM CHAIR FOURTH YEAR 2018 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT 3 MONTH TIME FRAME SOFTWARE USED: REVIT, AUTOCAD, RHINO 3D, INDESIGN, ILLUSTRATOR

PROJECT BRIEF The inspiration for this chair was derived from a loom which is meant to weave tapestries. The concept was to turn the chair into a loom where the back side of the chair would be woven for a comfortable feel. This is accomplished by drilling holes into the top of the chair where the macramé rope would go through. Plywood was used to make the seat and top of the chair while Ash was used for the legs of the chair.
