RIVER ARTS DISTRICT
The site of Residence in Art is a threshold in many scales. It is threshold from I-26 to Asheville, the threshold into the river arts district, and a threshold from the road to the River. The creative doorways that adorn almost every building in the arts district are a perfect representation of the importance of threshold, the point of transition from one space to the next.

CONCEPT
MARY TRAN & ANTHONY WOHLERS
The overarching concept of Residence in Art is to create an adaptable venue for the creativity and collaboration of artists to create performances that can be experienced on many levels. The resident chef can create a menu for the opening performance of a play written by the resident playwright. The meal can be served on dinnerware created especially for the event by the resident potter. The backdrop and stage design is painted and created by the resident painter and sculptor. The stage design is created specifically to be broken down into individual art pieces for sale in the multiple retail/ production spaces. The residents live in a community atop the complex, in zero energy homes that they themselves help build.
The theater itself can be anything that the creatives imagine it to be. A four by four grid of platforms can be arrayed in any position along its eight foot height. Seating, lighting, sound and set pieces are lowered from the extensive fly tower. An exterior amphitheater addresses the stage, and all three sides of the theater can be opened to the River, Park, and Outdoor space. By creating a uniquely adaptability complex, whose form is controlled by creatives, the life of Residence in Art will be constantly changing, based on creativity and need.

RESIDENCE IN ART
(C) BACK LAWN
MARY TRAN & ANTHONY WOHLERS Residence in Art seeks to embody the Resilience, Creativity, and Adaptability of the surrounding River Arts District. The renascence of the River Arts District, a once bustling industrial center, is being driven by the influx of artists, whose creative use of formerly industrial building brings and energy and excitement to this recently downtrodden area.
RESIDENCE
The production and retail space is designed to be adaptable, open spaces that can be partition as needed, perforated by entry ways that lead to the river, and a large outdoor space that is created by the embrace of the building. Operable doors swing or pivot to allow pieces IN ART ASHEVILLE RIVER ARTS MARY TRAN / ANT and people to enjoy the outdoors. A spine runs along the production space into the theater space, for efficient transport of stage and set designs. Stage Support

The complex has a northern skin of double layer polycarbonate, whose panels can be controlled and replaced depending on the privacy or lighting needs of the space beyond. Optimally angled static louvers are embedded in the double layer glass southern exposure, which allow for 89 percent of the winter light to enter, and no direct light in the summer
