The Avatide Protocol

Abstract: Avatide will become the defining

blockchain based payment and operating system for the highly skilled professional freelance community who want to receive payment in crypto currencies.

We will provide a means for all companies to pay their freelancers in whatever crypto currency they choose whilst still complying with all of the regulatory tax requirements of their countries. We believe we can make crypto “salaries” as easily processed as fiat currencies. Through recording the work delivered and the freelancer outputs will also in turn have created a secure and immutable record of work history and credentials stored across a decentralised database that the freelancers can use to win further work ang grow their business. We will also provide them with an ongoing suite of tools to further grow the trend of the freelance economy. We will however be first of all focusing on those professionals that operate within the blockchain domain. The freelancers will be able to manage all of their business operations through the platform from creating proposals, signing contracts and sending invoices in a seamless and beautiful fashion with the greatest efficiency available. Companies will equally be able to plug the avatide API into their payroll solutions and keep better track of there expense and reporting whilst also providing a modern alternative to those top talents that want it. We are designing a system that will let buyers confidently purchase work and IP or “outcomes” agreed through secure smart contracts and approve the final deliverables. The exchange will be driven by a proprietary currency called “output” tokens (OPT) which will be needed to access the platform, add freelancers and access additional services.


Background

W

e live in a world today where there are an increasing number of professionals are wanting to be paid in crypto currencies. More and more professionals believe that this is the future and want a simple and easy to use solution to receive the funds in the currency of their choice.

This means that the majority of the population cannot take advantage of the blockchain based advantages that come when they deliver the work. In a digital age where anyone can create a profile and claim to have delivered X or achieved Y, the primary questions of credibility and fact can easily be undermined.

We are also seeing this trend take hold most strongly amongst freelancers who have already chosen to avoid the traditional, centralised and controlling forms of employment.

Additionally, for every engagement, there is delivery and payment risk. How can both parties be sure of what they will receive and know exactly when and how much should be paid with complete security?

Avatide places itself at the centre of these massive increases in trends and wants to build the bridge that will enable modern day companies to incorporate crypto offerings into their regular payroll whilst further harnessing the power of a flexible workforce. The largest and most common section of this freelance workforce operates within the technical and technological space where it is almost the norm in contrast to full-time employment. This is quickly followed by those in the creative industries and is fast being caught up by those in professional services and advisory based industries such as management consultancy or law. These are professionals who value their freedom, are driven by the pursuit of the passions and the variety of work as well as the ability to move around as they choose.

Plus finalising and managing lots of contracts or invoices is both time consuming and expensive for each party. In the age of Blockchain and smart contracts these problems should no longer exist. Avatide provides a simple solution that will plug into a company’s existing payroll solution via apis to be able to ensure payment for the freelancers, help them build out their profile, provide a competitive edge to the companies in being able to provide a more attractive solution to those who want it and still keep track of all their financial records in line with the necessary accounting procedures. A significant Market opportunity Companies such as: Monster.com LinkedIn are all operating in an industry broadly defined as the online talent industry.

Human Cloud An emerging set of online/digital platforms that enable managers and workers to complete (typically contingent) work. The Human Cloud has three distinct categories: ● Online staffing platforms ● Online work services ● Crowdsourcing

Avatide operates at the cross section of several major markets with significant potential to scale and change the landscape forever. The payroll and bookkeeping service accounts for $74bn spend annually whilst the technology driven payroll component of this, most relevant to Avatide, makes up 58.8% of the market according to IBIS Research. The traditional market is also growing at close to 6% however the growth rate of the crypto portion for this is well above 100%+ per year. The global cloud based payroll industry alone is forecast to reach $10bn as well by 2023. We are also operating in the industry broadly defined as the online talent industry. A 2015 study by McKinsey on the Global ¬talent industry estimates that the online matching of the demand and supply of labour will grow to a £2.7 trillion industry by 2025, equivalent to the size of the UK economy. The industry includes companies such as Monster.com and LinkedIn, which match job seekers and traditional employers. Industry consultants have developed the term the “Human Cloud” to refer to an emerging set of online/digital platforms that enable managers and workers to complete (typically contingent) work. The Human Cloud has three distinct categories: online staffing platforms; online work services; and crowdsourcing. In 2015, it was estimated that companies processed between $25.6 and $28.6 billion in spend associated with the human cloud. By segment, online staffing platforms processed between $4.3 and $4.6 billion in spend, online work services firms processed between $20.6 billion and $23.2 billion in spend, and crowdsourcing firms processed between $0.7 and $0.8 billion in spend in 2015. There is currently an estimated $2BN per year already being spent on technology for blockchain initiatives indicating that there will be a significant demand for freelancers with a keen interest in crypto currencies. We have already seen the potential demand for salaries even at this nascent state of the market with the rapid growth of services like Bitwage as well which now has over 20,000 users and last year according to the BBC paid out over $30m in salaries.

Introducing Output Tokens

Creating a better payroll solution for the freelance economy Output Tokens are standard ERC20 tokens which implement Avatide Protocol providing a more honest, transparent and secure way to pay for work delivered in crypto currencies. The platform will let clients hire and assign work to freelancers using crypto currencies to pay for the work. This will help companies to immediately ensure safe delviery of the work they require from either an external talent pool or their own existing network of freelance talent. It will remove any barriers to potential usage by unnecessarily complicating the payment process for clients and ensure accurate reporting against all Gaap requirements and management of their balances.

The exact numbers of tokens that need to be held will vary according to whether you are a client or a consultant and the level of premium services you are accessing. For the first 12 months whilst we are scaling adoption will waive this condition. The output token smart contracts instantly process buy and sell orders upon completion of the agreed outcomes. The output tokens can either be spent again within the platform on additional freelance services or traded on the exchanges as a liquid asset.

Therefore the token will operate on a pay for access model whereby users of the platform will need to hold a minimum number of OPT tokens.

Easy and instant APIs: Connection into a variety of existing payroll and HR management solutions with clear reporting and accounting facilities to ensure adherence to any regulations. The ability to set limits on the amount paid in crypto currency as well as ongoing monitoring of the currency fluctuations based on the amount paid.

ID Verification: This will be done through plug ins to services like Civic. com. We will be able to direct validate educational experience and grades from academic institutions. Work history and quality would also be verified direct from the employer or through a crowdsourced model where people can review sample work uploaded in to the profile. We will also ensure the corporate’s blockchain history should also be transparent in spirit of openness and equality and use a similar service to that used for the freelancers.

Freelancer Bids: The client will clearly outline their requirements using a pre determined project template form and outline the exact demands of the projects. They will assign points to the output needed to determine its size and therefore its value. The number of points awarded will also be indicative of a project complexity. The freelancer will then respond to this by submitting a number their bids above or below the client budget. As the data within the platform grows, we will be able to provide better indication to the number of points that should be assigned to a project or alternatively highlight similar projects completed in the past and connect the client with the freelancer directly to either engage again or re-sell the code.

Matching Algorithm: Our algorithm in the first instance would take the fixed data fields in the project posting template and compare to the similar fields within the consultant profiles. Stronger matching relationships would be deduced through using a more relationship based database structure like NEO4j from the outset. We would also use elastic search and machine learning to capture and improve our interpretations of the natural language algorithms which would ultimately ensure an expert match every time.

Dispute Resolution: We would harness the power of the crowd to ensure an excellent dispute resolution service. Should a dispute be raised, we would enable the work to be submitted to a panel of experts in the necessary field who would then judge the output based on the brief and any communications between the freelancer and client. A small percentage eg 5% of the project value would then be paid across.

Blockchain as a technological staple is not going anywhere and investment is already increasingly at an unparallelled rate. By creating the world’s leading blockchain focused payroll solution tied to a community and labour exchange supported by the verified IDs and work history we will be able to capture an increasing amount of the total global spend and provide the difference between a open ended marketplace and an enterprise level tool. With both the cloud based payroll solution alone opportunity worth close $10bn per year and a rapidly growing market in both the acceptance of crypto currencies as a salary and the freelance economy there is a significant chance that Avatide would present a $1bn dollar net revenue opportunity. As the platform gains momentum and the work histories and credentials of the freelancers as well as the embedding of the tool within organisations becomes more data rich we will create a natural moat and network effect around the business increasing stickiness and value. Likewise as we increasingly capture the history of work and contracts and payment records completed within a company, there would be less desire for them to switch to a new service. As the volume of the work and users increases and with a finite number of tokens in circulation, the demand for those tokens would obviously increase pushing up their value and potential return for investors.

A differentiated and superior offering We see a wide number of other payroll solutions however there are none that provide the full suite of offerings that Avatide intends to. Companies like Workday and ADP have reached $20bn and $45bn market valuations focusing on the large enterprise market however these either use 3rd party payroll integrations or do not provide the employee directory capabilities. New entrants like Bitwage also increasingly just focus on a crypto only payroll solution and have still shown exceptional growth. Meanwhile, freelance marketplace models are now increasingly commonplace however the majority of the platforms operate at the low end of the talent pool and focus on more commodified talents. The most well known operators in this space are platforms like Upwork.com which sees more than a $1bn in transactions per year across the platform. Additionally freelancer.com now has a market cap of close to $800m AUSD.

Nor do these platforms place the freelancers at the heart of their actions and provide the additional services that will engender talent retention and greater stickiness. We are now seeing the earliest signs of blockchain based platforms come out such as Blocklaner.net and Ethlance.com. Whilst both of these have noble ambitions and are showing great promise having completed successful token issuances recently, we believe we have a much clearer positioning, stronger and more sustainable token and revenue model as well as much more experienced management team to deliver against our roadmap. Additionally, our approach is not that of an open front marketplace but rather growing usage by offering real value to the companies through a much more secure solution that combines the best of both services.

Both of these operate at the lower end of the talent market and predominantly focus on low value projects of a more marketing oriented nature using emerging market talent. The closest direct competitors for Avatide’s first vertical would be sites such as Toptal.com or Gigster, which provide high end technical talent. Both have received significant VC backing from eminent investors such as Andressen Horowitz. However none of these utilise the blockchain technology and are much more narrow in their vision of how to create the components which

Limited choice of talent: We will be tackling one talent market at a time and have significant expertise in rapidly growing talent pools based on client demand. We would also enable clients to use the platform as a means of working with and managing their own network of freelancers. This means that Avatide would always maintain a high level of utility in the client’s mind.

● Complex technology slowing client adoption: The technology

behind marketplaces are quite commonplace as are all the various components of the blockchain technology we will be building. We also have an expert UX & UI team who will ensure the client interfaces are very simple and will support the experience through an onboarding team. Through our focused approach on blockchain orient professionals and therefore companies to start with, we expect to significantly lower any perceived barriers that may exist amongst the less “blockchain” aware organisations.

● Disintermediation: It is impossible to completely eliminate the

threat of disintermediation as people can always cheat the system if needed however Avatide is focused on building enough added value services and benefits into using the platform that the desire to circumvent the system will be minimal. Also both parties will want to create a history of work to improve their online standing and reputation which will encourage them to keep using the platform whilsts finally our fees are also significantly lower than offline competitors and as such provide no financial incentive to cheat the system, when doing so will ultimately see the user removed from the platform and have to revert to a more inefficient process.

A self-promoting Network A rewards and incentive model will be deployed to create a viral effect where by 1% of the fees used by companies will be issued to freelancers who had actually transacted on the platform within the last 12 months in new tokens. This will provide a greater incentive for the freelancers to keep using the platform and heighten the “built by us” spirit of the initiative. It will also ensure a steady rate of new tokens coming into the market to facilitate liquidity without damaging dilutionary effects.

An achievable technology roadmap Avatide is based on the ethereum Blockchain utilising smart contracts and ERC20 tokens. Avatides library of smart contracts will transparently manage the lifecycle of an Avatide contract from specification to payment. IPFS will be used to manage assets associated with the ticket smart contract. The smart contracts cover the mechanics of ticket submission, acceptance, arbitration and payment. We’ll use web3.py - a Python library and any databases etc will be Amazon or Google services. We will ultimately build our database on IPFS although initially will just use that for the documents. We already know however that there are many APIs readily available for the plug into the payroll and HR solutions which will make it very easy to scale the distribution reach of the business. Likewise there are APIs for the various coin exchanges that we will exchange the FIAT funds into crypto currencies. As an end result when volumes increase there will be every opportunity to avoid going through the exchanges and create a cleaner peer to peer exchange mechanism like with Transferwise.com in the FIAT economy. We have a clear product roadmap with strategic feature additions built our as the platform scales that will not only add greater stickiness but will enable us to go in to new markets and grow volumes further.
