Adapting Small Sided Games

Ian Mulliner

Technical Director - Mass Youth Soccer As coaches we are all guilty from time to time of “stealing” activities that we have seen other coaches do and making them our own. I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that and as any coach should tell you “That is exactly what we want you to do!”.

minutes with a 3 minute rest period in between games and then shorten the rest time and gradually increase the playing time but not exceeding 4 minutes for 3 v 3 play. I should also add here that the fewer the players involved the higher the intensity level gets, so the shorter the periods of play need to be. Please keep that in mind when planning your sessions.

There are no secrets in soccer and we should all embrace and cultivate an environment of idea exchange and sharing of knowledge! To that end with the recently implemented US Soccer grassroots courses and the new practice format of Play – Practice -Play I would like to share with you some ideas on how to manipulate your small sided games to really get the most out them and to maximize players experiential learning at every practice. The first thing we need to do is decide what it is that we intend to focus on for our sessions. This is done by observing and analyzing games that out team play in. Based on our observations we decide just where our team’s areas of need are. That at least should be the basis for every session plan selection or creation.Once the topic has been decided we can then set up our small sided fields to help bring out the topic.

Adapting Small Sided Games for Intensity As an example if your team is having a problem with fitness (being able to last an entire half without asking to subbed out or even tiring). Then you should make your small sided fields a little bigger than we would normally recommend. So a 3 v 3 field that would normally be 20 yards wide by 30 yards long you could extend to say 25 yards wide by 40 yards long and play for periods of 3-4 minutes with (depending on what stage of the season you are at and the overall fitness level of your players) a rest period of 1-3 minutes. Baring in mind that the shorter the rest period between periods of play the fitter your players have to be to be able to optimize there competitive capacity. So at the start of the season you may play for 3

Adapting for Success based on Players, Equipment and Space Of course, fitness is not the only consideration when it comes to adapting your small sided games. For dribbling to beat an opponent you probably want a field that is longer than narrower to encourage attacking the space behind the defenders. For switching the point of attack your field should be wider than it is long to encourage use of the full width and maybe including 2 goals on each end line close to but not right in the corners of the field. Field size and number of goals used are not the only way to manipulate your small sided games environment either. You can introduce rules that help promote the use of different skills such as: • Everyone on the team must touch the ball before your team can score to promote passing. • No forward passes to promote dribbling. • Everybody must be in the attacking half for a goal to count to promote support in the attack and transition. • Everybody must be back in their own half or the goal counts double to encourage defending as a team.

Massachusetts Youth Soccer www.mayouthsoccer.org You can create uneven teams to see how your players cope with being numbers up or numbers down. Or make it situational such as the Blue team is down by 2 goals can you tie or win the game in the next 3-4 minutes? There are a myriad of different things that you the coach can do to manipulate the small sided games environment to enhance player development and the players game understanding. A good way of creating an inclusive environment and getting your team to “buy in” is to ask them to come up with ideas for small sided games that you can try each week as you go through the season. That way you will be getting your players to think more deeply about the game and may be creating some future coaches! I hope you found this article helpful and I would love to receive some feedback or any ideas you may have for future articles. IM

In a 20W x 30L yard grid, a 6W x 3L yard box goal on each end line and all players are in pairs. Select 1 pair to be the bandits. Each pair needs 1 ball to share except for the bandits. The pairs with a ball will try to dribble & pass to either goal and pass to their teammate within the goal. After scoring in one end, play to the other. How many goals can you score in 2 minutes? The mission of the bandits is to steal the ball from the passing pairs and bring it to one of the two hideouts (goals). The passing pairs can take the ball back from the bandits before they get it all the way to the hideout. If the bandits succeeds in getting the ball into the hideout, the passing pair lose all their points and have to start counting over again. Rotate bandits after each interval. Rules: Players cannot enter the field until the coach serves a soccer ball onto the field. Key Words: Look up, find an opening, play through it Guided Questions: 1.- Where should you go if a defender is closing your opening? 2.- What are some ways you can play the ball through an opening? Answers: 1.- See if teammate can move to create a new opening. 2.- You can dribble through, pass through or shoot through. Notes: If bandits steal a ball and get it to a hideout, they can now begin scoring goals. The team that lost the ball must now steal another ball in order to start scoring again.

Key Words: support your teammate, find avoid the coach, go for goal Guided Questions: 1.- Where should your teammate move to if you have the ball? 2.- When should you pass? Answers: 1.- Try to move forward and into openings. 2.- If a defender is blocking your opening, pass to your teammate to see if he/she can play forward through an opening. Notes: Once the players understand the direction and where to score, challenge them to work with a partner. The 2 players now need to move the ball from one goal to the other.

In a 20W x 30L yard grid, a 6W x 3L yard box goal on each end line, coach will create teams of 2 players. Two teams will play against one another and, on the same field and at the same time, two other teams will also play against one another. Each team will defend 1 goal and score in the other. A goal is scored by either dribbling the ball into the opponent's box or passing the ball to your teammate in the box. After a goal is scored, the scoring team backs up to allow the ball back into play and the game continues. If you have more than 4 teams of 2, either rotate teams onto the field or create a second field. Key Words: play through, look up Guided Questions: 1.- What are some things you have to look for in this game? 2.- Why should you try to keep the ball instead of kicking it away? Answers: 1.- You have to look for your teammates, the goal, the other players. 2.- It is much easier to get the ball to your teammates if you receive it first, pick your head up and pass it to them.4 Notes: Coach can add passing or scoring incentives as needed to further challenge the players.
