Bakalar & Paine Galleries: Renovation and Addition Designed by: Machado and Silvetti
Exterior view from Huntington Avenue, Boston 2
It will be the largest free contemporary art destination in Boston; an 8,000-square-foot masterpiece designed by Machado and Silvetti housing the cutting-edge Bakalar & Paine contemporary art galleries, classrooms for community and art education programs, and a multipurpose performance and lecture hall. It’s the final step in MassArt’s $140-million campaign to transform the campus, inspire the community, and spur the creative economy. The new $16.1-million renovation will feature all of the front and back of house additions needed to accommodate Installation view: Joe Fig: Inside the Painter’s Studio, Stephen D. virtually any exhibition year round, expand art education outreach programs, attract more visitors to campus, and provide more opportunities for MassArt students to work directly with visiting artists and learn first-hand about designing and curating exhibitions. And an iconic new pavilion will stretch out from South Hall to greet visitors along Huntington Avenue and serve as a highly visible entrance. Creating these state-of-the-art facilities will foster learning, creativity, and academic inquiry, while transforming them into a “must visit” destination along the Avenue of the Arts. It’s important to our campus, to future artists and designers, and to our promise to be an educational and cultural resource for the citizens of Massachusetts. And it’s a rare opportunity for donors to make a significant impact on MassArt’s mission and Boston’s cultural landscape for generations to come.
