A clear path to career success

MassArt graduates are everywhere, and they’re doing some pretty amazing things. Teaching and mentoring the next generation of students. Designing innovative products that address modern-day challenges and drive our economy. Creating powerful artwork that sparks important conversations and tackles complex social issues. And so much more. Our students succeed because they dig deep and work hard. And we support them every step of the way as they explore all the places they can go with a MassArt education.

“MassArt balances development of practical career skills with the soul of art. I never once felt like the subjects I was studying were too ‘in the clouds.’ And I gained real work experience along the way.”

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

MassArt’s Career Development Office helps students prepare for the next step in their professional journeys. That means connecting them to on-campus experiential learning opportunities like teaching, administrative, and curatorial assistant positions. But it also means helping students master the nuts and bolts of the job search process: creating a professional resume, writing a thoughtful cover letter, preparing for that big interview. Wherever they are on their career path, we connect MassArt students with the resources, expertise, and opportunities they need to chart their course.

Julian Phillips ’20

Whether restoring a barn on Thomas Edison’s New Jersey property or working to preserve the Virginia home of Maggie Walker, the first Black woman in the United States to establish a bank, historical architect Julian Phillips touches a lot of history, literally. Phillips, who works at the Historic Architecture Conservation and Engineering Center (HACE), a division of the National Park Service, credits MassArt for providing the creative foundation for his unique career in historic preservation.

One of the first courses he took at MassArt was in early American furniture — an introduction to furniture design and also to historians, museum curators, and craftsmen. It directly helped him in his role at HACE. “HACE is extremely multidisciplinary, exactly like MassArt,” he says. “Conservators, architects, landscape architects, historians — we all work together. I learned the value of that at MassArt, how to not only appreciate the differences around me but also find similarities. All those people were in the same space and had done different things, and we came together and learned from one another.”

ART FOR EVERY AGE

Art and design have the power to energize, empower, and inspire — at any age and every stage of life. MassArt’s Professional & Continuing Education and Youth & Teen Programs provide learners at every level the chance to immerse themselves in art and design. From one-off classes, to weekend workshops, to intensive certificates, we want everyone — whether age eight or 80 — to experience all the amazing things high-quality art and design education can bring.

TRANSFORM YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL ASPIRATIONS INTO A THRIVING BUSINESS

MassArt’s Creative Economy Business Incubator class empowers current students, alumni, and Boston-based art and design professionals to master key entrepreneurial skills, build their professional networks, and bring their business concepts to life. Over two semesters, students receive comprehensive training in business fundamentals, including business strategy, marketing, and finance. Collaborating closely with members of their cohort, they apply what they learn towards developing and refining their entrepreneurial ideas. And with individualized coaching and guidance from faculty, industry experts, and visiting entrepreneurs, students gain the tools and knowledge they need to shape their ideas into successful businesses.

As an upperclassman, Rimi Mallick realized she didn’t want to pursue a career as an animator for a commercial studio. The reason? “I wanted full control of it,” she says, “to use it to explore what was personal for me.” She was drawn to teaching, however, because of her experiences teaching at MassArt and seeing the impact on her students. Teaching in the College’s Summer Youth Programs and Saturday Studios helped nurture the educator side of her. It was a soft launch into

what to expect from a teaching career. “You get a taste and start to build yourself,” she comments.

Today, Mallick teaches design and visual communication, studio arts, merchandising, life drawing, and open studio to high school students at the Boston Arts Academy, relaying that her relationship with the school was built through MassArt. “I love helping students find their own artistic voice,” she says. “I definitely feel fulfilled.”

Heily Rivas ’24 BFA Fashion Design

Right near the ocean in Ghana, on Africa’s west coast, a new alum learned sustainable fashion in a vibrant cross-cultural exchange — thanks to financial help from MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP).

Heily Rivas ’24
BFA Fashion Design

With the help of funding from MassArt, alumna Heily Rivas traveled to Ghana for a monthlong residency in sustainable fashion. Along with learning about fibers and fabric-making at a local textile workshop, she studied at the famed Kokrobitey Institute, written up in Vogue as a center where “sustainable design has always been the focus.”

“At MassArt I was able to explore art forms I had never been exposed to ….I was given the platform to propel myself toward what I have wanted to do for a long time.”

Heily aimed to find out how to take secondhand clothing imported from other countries and upcycle the fabrics into fashions that would resonate with Ghanaians and people in nearby nations. The work often meant employing traditional African methods of textile working. “They do silkscreen printing, they do batik,” Rivas

says — “African-type printing of textiles with natural dyes. You see these lovely textiles with a lot of layers, a lot of intricacy. They’re really trying to minimize textile waste.”

Rivas was eight or nine when she started asking her mother to teach her how to sew. By age 12, she knew she wanted to be a fashion designer. But as she learned that fashion is often coupled with significant waste, she wanted to take things in a more planet-saving direction. “My MassArt education helped me see alternatives,” she says. “In fact, I discovered the Kokrobitey Institute thanks to Ekua Holmes, the Associate Director of CACP. She invited the founder of the institute to deliver a presentation here. I attended it and fell in love with the mission.

“MassArt is a true hub for interdisciplinary artists,” Rivas says, “for people who want to bring their unique talents together into a single toolbox that will help them create positive change in a world that so needs it.”

Rivas begins coursework for her master’s degree in sustainability at the Harvard Extension School later this year.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID

Whether you’re a first-time undergraduate or returning to college for an advanced degree, navigating the financial aid process can feel overwhelming. But here at MassArt, we keep it simple. Just apply for aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and from there, you’re automatically considered for multiple aid options, including loans, scholarships, grants, tuition waivers, and work-study opportunities. And many of the College’s merit and need-based scholarships and aid options are renewable for up to four years of study.

If you have any questions about financial aid, we’re here to help!

“Coming from a blue-collar area, MassArt was a place I’d only imagined until I got there. It was magical. It was where I really grew up and became myself rather than what my environment had intended for me. My professors were like family members who enabled me to live my dreams.”
Jim Warner ’84 BFA Industrial Design

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE THAT PREPARES STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS

At MassArt, we equip students with the experience, skills, and knowledge that drive career success. Internships, assistantships, and other employment opportunities — on and off campus — allow students to bring what they learn in the classroom or studio to a professional setting. They enhance their art and design skills while building their networks, gaining practical experience, and exploring career paths.

So where do MassArt students intern? Adobe, Bose, Boston Ballet, Converse, Disney, Hasbro, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Marc Jacobs, Marvel Studios, Mass MoCA, MIT, Museum of Fine Arts, National Geographic, New England Aquarium, Nickelodeon, WGBH, and many more.

Jim Warner created the swirls at the top and the bottom of a Pepsi bottle — a subliminal suggestion of moving forward and looking to the future rather than the past. Warner is also responsible for the asymmetry of a bottle of Windex that allows your hand to remain in a neutral position as you spritz — and for countless other product, packaging, and sustainability design innovations. He credits his MassArt education with his ability to successfully apply what he calls “the strategy of design, the attitude of design.”

With more than 200 patents under his belt and millions of frequent flyer miles, Warner says MassArt taught him how to work collaboratively, solve problems, and make his mark in society. “It was the place that ignited the belief that I could do this,” he says. “It was mindblowing. I owe my success to MassArt in a big way because it was the facilities, the people, the thinking, just the energy that convinced me anything is possible.”

At MassArt, we know that many hands make light work, and we bring that collaborative mindset to projects big and small across campus and beyond.

A deep and broad curriculum that prepares students to excel

MassArt is an education that’s designed for today’s world. Our curriculum empowers students to develop and refine the skills they need to become accomplished art and design professionals. But it also allows them to learn about themselves, others, and the world they share. It’s deep, discipline-specific art and design instruction, along with broad exposure that prepares students to succeed in a fastmoving economy and society.

In our incredible jewelry and metalsmithing studios, students develop specialized skills in casting, molding, and 3D modeling and create one-of-a-kind, wearable art pieces.

Students enhance their creative practice by engaging in thoughtful critique with peers, faculty, and visiting artists and lecturers.

“MassArt’s a really hands-on learning experience where you get to spend a lot of time in the studio making work and engaging with your peers and your professors. You don’t get that at a lot of other schools.”
Sam Florendo ’24 BFA Illustration

STUDIO FOUNDATION

Before they select a major, first-year BFA students immerse themselves in MassArt’s Studio Foundation curriculum. It’s a required, yearlong deep dive into the techniques, skills, and concepts that are essential to building a successful creative practice.

HUMANITIES

Critical thinking, observation, and good writing matter in every discipline across any industry. MassArt undergraduates complete humanities coursework that builds these important skills through literature, film, history, music, and philosophy.

INTEGRATIVE SCIENCES & BIOLOGICAL ARTS

Undergraduates study math and the natural and social sciences through our Integrative Sciences & Biological Arts department. This coursework brings literacy and insight that helps them see the world differently, and can add a rich dimension to their creative practice.

There’s something special about MassArt faculty

Our faculty are accomplished teachers and mentors who bring deep experience as scholars and creative professionals to their classrooms and studios. But alongside that teaching excellence is unwavering mentorship and support that inspires students to go to some truly unexpected places.

Through dedicated support, mentorship, and guidance, MassArt faculty help their students thrive as artists, designers, and individuals.

“My instructors were very supportive, and they played a pivotal role in my artistic journey. They constantly encouraged me to explore new ideas and embrace creativity without fear.”

Leon ’24

Embracing the State of Play

I want students to see AI as an opportunity to offload some of the work that they find less engaging in the design process — not as a threat to their livelihoods.

When I introduce my students to new AI design tools, we take time in class to talk through how they’re useful, how they’re fun to use, and how they make students feel. I encourage them to explore and play with tools like Framer and Adobe Firefly, because when we’re in a state of play, we take chances, take risks, and look at things in new ways.

Not only can AI speed up workflows, but it can also lead to new ideas. And once students see AI for what it is — just a new set of tools — it’s up to them to decide where they want to apply them in their work.

“Design is about reaching someone and changing something in their lives — it’s about creating a better experience. And if AI can be used in service of that, then let’s use it.”

Students incorporate cutting-edge technology into their art-making practice.

Space(s) to learn, explore, and make great work

MassArt’s campus is home to an impressive collection of studios, labs, workshops, and tools. These spaces and resources empower members of our creative community to pursue their passions, hone their craft, and build their portfolios.

In our digital fabrication labs, students work together to develop innovative designs and prototypes.

In the Hot Shop, sculpture and glass students create one-of-a-kind three dimensional art pieces and functional vessels.

Graduate and undergraduate students enjoy studio spaces that allow them to immerse themselves in their work and deepen their creative practice.

With nearly a million square feet of learning, making, and living space on our campus, MassArt students have the room they need to explore, create, and grow.

Students master majorspecific tools like the Animation Department’s motion control crane and animation stand.

Showcasing work from our community and beyond

Our campus is home to 12 galleries and exhibit spaces, as well as the MassArt Art Museum (MAAM), Boston’s only free contemporary art museum. That makes this an incredible place to see art from emerging and established artists, but it also means big opportunities for our students.

Our Academic Exhibitions program allows MassArt students to show their work in galleries on campus and around Boston. Curating, submitting, installing, and presenting their work in different venues, students gain valuable hands-on experience, build confidence, and develop a deeper understanding of how to organize art and design work for public display.

The MassArt Art Museum (MAAM) is a free-to-visit and always evolving place that exhibits work from emerging and established contemporary artists from around the world.

The MassArt x SoWa graduate gallery — located in Boston’s art and design district — exhibits exciting work from emerging and established MassArt artists.

“I worked as a MassArt x SoWa gallery assistant, overseeing daily operations, photographing installations, assisting with the installation of exhibitions, designing marketing materials, and communicating with visitors, artists, and clients. These experiences helped prepare me for my current position as a Curatorial Associate at the Griffin Museum of Photography.”
