We are proud to support MassArt and the future generation of artists and designers.

Welcome to the 2025 MassArt Auction!

MassArt is a place where creativity knows no bounds, where the power of art and design transcends convention to shape a brighter, more connected world. Tonight, you are part of something extraordinary—a celebration of the creative spirit that fuels MassArt’s mission and transforms lives. Now in its 36th year, the MassArt Auction is one of Boston’s premier cultural events, showcasing exceptional works by both emerging and established artists. Featuring works by MassArt students, alumni, and renowned artists across the globe, the Auction presents everything from fine art to wearable creations to bespoke commissions—there’s something to captivate every art lover.

At its heart, the MassArt Auction is more than a celebration—it’s a powerful way to make a lasting impact. Together, we raise essential funds for student scholarships and academic programs while directly supporting artists in Boston and beyond. Your contributions ensure that MassArt continues to be a vital force at the center of creativity and civic engagement, shaping the next generation of artists, designers, and educators. We are thrilled that the incomparable Karen M. Keane, Chair of the MassArt Board of Trustees, will once again lead the evening’s Live Auction as auctioneer. Last year, thanks to your generosity, we surpassed $1 million in fundsraised for the tenth consecutive year. Tonight, we can build on that momentum and make an even greater impact.

The MassArt Auction would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of our sponsors, artists, gallery partners, faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and alumni—many of whom are here with us tonight. We are deeply grateful for your contributions and support. We especially extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Auction Chair, MassArt Foundation Director Elizabeth Lowrey H’19, for her exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to this event and to MassArt, and to the Auction Committee for their tireless efforts in bringing this evening to life. By being here this evening, you affi rm your belief in the transformative power of art and design, your commitment to helping MassArt students realize their potential, and your support of the Commonwealth’s dynamic cultural landscape.

Thank you for your support. Enjoy the evening, and as always: Bid high, bid often, and don’t forget to Raise Your Paddle!

Change a student’s life— MassArt students are worth the investment. Raise Your Paddle!

MassArt students are: Artists, Designers, Educators, Entrepreneurs, Leaders & Makers

But they can’t do it alone and that is where you can help!

Again this year, we will be allocating all Raise Your Paddle donations to the Mastodon Emergency Fund. MassArt established this fund to cover emergencies and unexpected financial hardships facing our students such as medical bills, food, one-time rental assistance or car repair. These funds can also be used to purchase supplies needed for projects.*

When you show your support with a Raise Your Paddle gift, you make it possible for our students to make the world a better place through the power of art and design. Your gift, of any amount, will help students like Loui pursue their art careers.

Make a gift of any amount by going online to massartauction.org/give.

*

If you are not able to join us for this year’s Auction to participate in the Raise Your Paddle segment (or perhaps were outbid on that piece of art you had hoped to buy and are feeling generous!), you can still make a gift of any amount by going online to massartauction.org/give.

“Since moving to Boston, I have experienced a bit of culture shock due to how expensive it is to live here, especially as an out of state student. Receiving a scholarship from the Mastodon Fund has helped me afford groceries, and pay off some medical bills I had when I got sick last year. I am glad to have been a recipient for these funds because they have truly helped me ease some worries, and I hope that others will have the opportunity to benefit from the Mastodon Fund just as I have!”

Loui Burke ’25, Sculpture Mastodon Emergency Fund recipient and Auction artist

Auction Guidelines

BEFORE THE AUCTION

We encourage all MassArt Auction guests to register in advance of Friday, March 14 on Bidsquare by visiting bidsquare.com/user/ register. This will allow you to be ready to submit bids when the Auction officially opens for bidding on Monday, March 17 at 12:00 NOON EDT via massartauction.org/bid . Once you register, Bidsquare will be notified and will approve you for bidding or request additional information to complete your registration via email. If you created an account on Bidsquare for previous MassArt Auctions, your log-in credentials should still be valid, but we recommend that you doublecheck them to make sure. Registering a few days in advance will ensure you will be approved to bid in time for the auction.

PUBLIC PREVIEW DAYS

We are excited to feature around 300 works of contemporary art this year! All of the featured artwork from both Live and Silent Auctions will be installed and available for viewing in MassArt’s Design and Media Center. The works will be on exhibit during a Public Preview Period, running March 17 - March 27 by appointment. For more information on how to participate, please visit massartauction.org or contact Kylie Enos, Fundraising Events Manager:

E: auction@massart.edu T: 617.879.7014

SILENT AUCTION BIDDING

The three Silent Auction sections will all be featured in one timed online auction on Bidsquare starting Monday, March 17 at 12:00 PM NOON EDT through Saturday, March 29 at 10:30 PM EDT via massartauction.org/bid .

What is a timed auction? A timed auction is automated, and takes place solely online. The bidding for each lot is opened at a predetermined level at a set time and stays open over an extended period. During this period of open bidding, a bidder will be able to see the current high bid on each lot. You may place a higher bid at a defined bidding increment. A bidder’s identity is always kept confidential during the auction. In a timed auction, bidders are automatically informed by email if they are the high bidder, or if they have been outbid by another competing bidder. Bidders can also participate by placing a “maximum bid,” which means setting the highest amount you are willing to pay for an item at auction and allowing the system to automatically bid on your behalf up to that limit. At the end of the defined bidding period, the lot is sold to the highest bid offered. In this timed auction, sales for all lots will close on March 29 at 10:30 PM EDT, which represents the end of the auction. If you are the winning bidder at the close of the Silent Auction, your bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item.

LIVE AUCTION

On Saturday, March 29, we will host a true hybrid event for this year’s Live Auction. For those attending virtually, please join us at massartauction.org/bid promptly at 8:00 PM EDT to participate in this year’s virtual Live Auction, live streamed with auctioneer, Karen M. Keane, MassArt Board of Trustees Chair & Chairman Emerita, Bonhams Skinner. A live auction is hosted in real-time and is held before an audience of in-person and online bidders. Alongside those participating in the room, Bidsquare allows a bidder to remotely participate in a live gallery auction via the internet. Bidders who are unable to attend the Live Auction in real time can place absentee bids online starting Monday, March 17 at 12:00 NOON EDT, which will be automatically processed during the Live Auction. Bidders participating virtually in the Live Auction will have their bids automatically received by the clerk, who will place your bid in realtime. Bidding will continue until competition for the lot ends. If the highest bid offered meets the minimum price designated by the seller as acceptable, the lot is sold. The auctioneer will then move on to the next lot. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item by that bidder.

RAISE YOUR PADDLE

Raise Your Paddle is our annual appeal for outright contributions to our student scholarship fund. Your gift of any amount will help MassArt remain affordable and accessible. This year, funds raised from our annual Raise Your Paddle appeal will be designated to the Mastadon Emergency Fund, which supports MassArt students experiencing unexpected financial hardship. Gifts made through Raise Your Paddle are outright donations and are tax-deductible as allowed by law. The MassArt Auction team will reach out to Raise Your Paddle participants to confirm payment options for Raise Your Paddle pledges in the week following the Auction. We encourage our guests to consider participating in Raise Your Paddle at the end of the Live Auction or making their gift online at massartauction.org/give.

BUY NOW!

The popular “Buy Now” option will be available for all Silent Auction lots during the timed online Silent Auction on Bidsquare, running from Monday, March 17 at 12:00 NOON EDT through Friday, March 28 at 12:00 NOON EDT via massartauction.org/bid . Any Silent Auction lot may be purchased outright by paying 150% of its stated value at any time during the outlined bidding period. Artwork may be purchased by clicking “Buy Now” on a selected lot on Bidsquare and remitting payment of the issued invoice by Friday, March 28 at 5:00 PM EDT. If payment is not received by that time, the buyer will lose claim of the artwork and it will become available for Silent Auction bidding.

Rosie

BUYER’S PREMIUM

A buyer’s premium equal to 15% of the winning bid will be applied to each lot sold and will be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. This premium helps to offset the administrative costs of running the MassArt Auction in order to ensure the funds raised through artwork sales go directly to student scholarships and academic programming. A buyer’s premium will not be applied to any pledge(s) made during the Live Auction’s Raise Your Paddle fundraising opportunity.

SALES TAX

All artwork purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption certificates from other states will be accepted if presented with a business card or on letterhead. Please contact the Fundraising Events team at auction@massart.edu with questions.

PAYMENT

Credit cards on file will be automatically charged within 72 hours of the close of the Auction for all artwork purchases. If buyers would like to make alternative payment arrangements, please get in touch with the Auction team within 48 hours of the close of the Auction. All purchases are final and no exchanges or refunds will be allowed.

ARTWORK PICK-UP & DELIVERY

Our team works closely with our artwork partners to provide an excellent experience for our buyers. We plan to offer all buyers the options of local Boston pick up, free delivery in the Metro Boston, MA area* or shipment of artwork at the expense of the purchaser during the weeks after the Auction. Please know that the process to get purchased pieces into the hands of buyers is extensive and takes time. All buyers will be contacted directly to make arrangements. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Please visit our website at massartauction.org or contact the MassArt Auction Team at auction@massart.edu or 617.879.7014 with any questions you may have.

Hansel Tai is a studio artist based in Tallinn, Estonia. His work investigates queer culture in the Post-internet Epoch, where the natural is overshadowed by the body cult, deformation, subcultural signs and high gloss metal, and hyperstition is materialised into fetish objects. Hansel has exhibited internationally, with notable showcases at the Museum of Art and Design, New York; Het Nieuwe Instituut, Netherlands; and FRAME, Germany. His accolades include the Enjoia’t MISUI Award (2019), Gallery Alice Floriano Award (2023), and NYC Jewelry Week’s One for the Future Award (2023–2024). His works are part of the permanent collections at Museum Arnhem and CODA Museum in the Netherlands. In addition, he serves as a guest lecturer and critic in the Jewelry + Metalsmithing Department at RISD. Hansel obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Art Jewelry from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2016. He then pursued further studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and earned a Master’s degree with distinction (Cum Laude) from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2019.

Josef Albers (1888–1976) was a German-born artist, educator, and influential figure in modern art and design. After studying art education and lithography, he joined the Bauhaus in 1920, focusing on glass painting and later teaching the Vorkurs (foundation course). Albers became a Bauhaus professor in 1925, contributing to innovations in glass, metal, furniture, and typography until the school’s closure in 1933. Emigrating to the United States that same year, he led the art department at Black Mountain College in North Carolina until 1949 and later served as head of Yale’s design department (1950–1958). Albers is best known for his Homage to the Square series, which begun in 1949, and his groundbreaking theories on color and design, which influenced generations of artists. His work was celebrated in major exhibitions, including retrospectives at MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Albers lived in New Haven, Connecticut, until his death in 1976.

François Bel was born in Lyon in 1977 and now lives and works in Toulouse, France. Bel is a multidisciplinary artist, equally at ease with painting, sculpture, and installations. His work is as eclectic as his inspirations, influenced by street art, from which he borrows its system of repetition and variation, “New Realism” movements, which particularly appeal to him, and Dada and Pop Art, for the way they subvert daily objects in order to criticize today’s consumer society, like Duchamp’s ready-mades. Bel re-appropriates each material, working in turn with nylon cord for his suspensions and wire for his sculptures. In a society where everything happens increasingly quickly, Bel stops time for an instant in his works. Bel is exhibited and collected in France, Monaco, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Korea, and the United States.

Richard Raiselis is recognized for his sweeping urban vistas and for his complex examinations of vegetation and landscape. His paintings are concerned as much with the process of seeing as they are with the things shown. Raiselis’ work from 2012-2018 takes advantage of lofty perspectives above Boston’s financial district and Kenmore Square areas to develop elaborately observed treatments of dense views of structures and space. In Raiselis’ 2022 exhibition, perched views of Boston’s skyline are paired harmoniously with views from the artist’s back porch in a suburb west of Boston. His paintings of man-made structures mimic the forms of robust trees in the woodland landscape. Light filtered through branches and foliage imitates the bright reflections against gridded windowpanes. Raiselis has been an Associate Professor at the Boston University College of Fine Arts since 1996. His work has been shown at the National Academy of Design in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, and the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut, among many others. Richard Raiselis is represented by Gallery NAGA in Boston, MA.
