WELCOME

MHS President

Catherine Allgor Welcome to the 2020 Making History Gala! It will be an amazing evening, thanks to the presence of Jon Meacham, Emily Rooney, Gov. Charlie Baker, Mayor Martin J. Walsh, and you! We are featuring our work with National History Day (NHD), a nationally acclaimed program for which the Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) is the official state sponsor. You are going to hear more about NHD tonight, but let me say that this particular program is my passion. NHD actually stretches over an entire school year for students in grades 5–12. Through research on a historical topic of their choosing, they are able to engage with primary sources, exercise critical thinking, and gather evidence in order to form an argument—the very skills of professional historians! In fact, these are the skills needed for college readiness and civic literacy as well. For some students, working on complex History Day projects may be their only chance to acquire these analytic abilities. With our unparalleled collection of primary sources and expert scholars, the MHS is uniquely suited to give every child in the Commonwealth a chance at this truly transformative experience. We want to thank our network of collaborative educators, funders, and volunteers for making history come alive for thousands of students!

John Codman Ropes Award The John Codman Ropes Award is granted in recognition of extraordinary service to history. It is named in honor of John Codman Ropes, a member of the Society, a graduate of Harvard College, a distinguished military historian and lawyer, and a co-founder of the law firm Ropes & Gray. Dr. Drew Faust was conferred the award in 2018. The MHS is pleased to have MHS Trustee Anne McNay confer this award on Governor Charlie Baker in recognition of his exemplary leadership in guiding the Commonwealth through the COVID-19 pandemic. We are also pleased to have Boston Chief of Equity Dr. Karilyn Crockett confer this award on Mayor Martin J. Walsh in recognition of his exemplary leadership in guiding Boston through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Award recipients will receive inscribed, multi-chambered, cedar-lined sterling silver boxes as replicas of an artifact in the MHS collection. The original box was given to former governor Leverett Saltonstall in 1938 for his service to Greater Boston’s Community Fund Campaign. It bears the mark of a quill feather resembling that of the Making History Gala emblem.

MEET JON MEACHAM

Guest Speaker

Jon Meacham Jon Meacham is a renowned presidential historian, contributing writer to The New York Times Book Review, contributing editor at TIME, and Pulitzer Prize–winning author. Mecham’s #1 New York Times bestseller, The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, looks at tumultuous periods in American history when presidents and ordinary citizens came together to rebuild a civic trust. His book American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House was a New York Times bestseller. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 2009, the book was cited as an “unlikely portrait of a not always admirable democrat, but a pivotal president, written with an agile prose that brings the Jackson saga to life.” His other New York Times bestsellers include Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power; Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship, exploring the relationship between the two great leaders who piloted the free world to victory in World War II; and American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation.

Beyond broadcast Public media exists to serve the public. For years, stations did that through TV and radio. Today, the media landscape has expanded, and GBH has to be in all of the places our audience needs us. That means going beyond broadcast, beyond call letters and beyond outdated ideas about platforms. To reflect that, GBH dropped the letter that tied us to broadcast and adopted a more vibrant aesthetic. You’re not going to miss it; that same letter is missing from this entire message. GBH has changed. But not our mission, our pioneering spirit or our commitment to you.
