WELCOME
MHS President
Catherine Allgor Welcome to the Making History Gala! We are all making history tonight as we gather back in person after two years of a global pandemic. It is a grateful moment, and we use it to celebrate “Living Civics.”
Courtesy First Republic Bank
By this we mean that civics is a way of living—a collection of actions we take to contribute to our life together as an organized and peaceful society.
The MHS contributes to this ethic as the state sponsor of National History Day in Massachusetts, a yearlong program for students in grades 6–12 that strengthens research and critical thinking skills, preparing them to succeed in college and in their careers. As a member of the Massachusetts Civic Learning Coalition, the MHS provides vital training and resources for students and teachers to fulfill their civic education curriculum requirements statewide. Living Civics is also about the people who model what it means to stand up for what is just and to work hard to attain equity for all. Tonight, we honor Levin H. Campbell and Hubie Jones with the John Codman Ropes Award for their commitment to truth, contributions to history, and extraordinary service to the people and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Thank you for joining me for this night of celebration and hope, as we give our young citizens the tools they need to follow in the footsteps of tonight’s honorees as informed and compassionate leaders.

Hon. Levin H. Campbell Dedicated to public service throughout his career, upon graduating from Harvard Law School, Judge Campbell served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the U.S. Army during the Korean War followed by a term in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He then spent a decade in private practice at the Boston law firm of Ropes & Gray. Lee served as the head of the Civil Rights Division under Massachusetts Attorney General Edward W. Brooke III, and then as First Assistant Attorney General under Massachusetts Attorney General Elliot Richardson, before beginning his impressive 40-year tenure on the bench in 1969. As a judge, first on the Massachusetts Superior Court, then on the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and finally on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, he penned more than 1,000 opinions and countless legal doctrines over four decades of societal change. Lee has been a powerful force in shaping the law as it is known today—from allowing girls to play Little League Baseball in Rhode Island to maintaining a healthy separation between church and state. Held in high regard by all branches of government, he worked closely with Congress and the Executive Branch, devoting a considerable amount of his time and energy to various Judicial Conference Committees, the Federal Courts Study Committee, the Committee to Review Circuit Council Conduct and Disability Orders, and the National Commission on Judicial Discipline and Removal. For decades, Lee has served the MHS in many volunteer leadership capacities as a member and supporter, along with his late wife Eleanor, and most distinctively as Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2000–2002. He continues to serve as a distinguished Life Trustee of the Society. 8

Hubert E. (Hubie) Jones Hubert Eugene Jones, better known as “Hubie,” is a civil rights activist and serial social entrepreneur who shaped and defined the civic and social landscape of Boston for more than 50 years. He has played a leadership role in the formation and growth of at least 25 organizations within Boston’s Black community and urban footprint. Hubie served in, founded, and/or led social agencies such as Boston Children Services, the Judge Baker Guidance Center, Higher Ground, Inc., the Roxbury Multi-Service Center (RMSC), and many more. His research and advocacy at RMSC led to key legislation that helped create educational access for children with special needs and the founding of what is now the Massachusetts Advocates for Children. Hubie’s academic career began as associate professor in the department of urban studies and planning at MIT. He then became the first African American appointed to a deanship at Boston University, where he had graduated with a master’s degree from the School of Social Work and is now its dean emeritus. His leadership landed him as special assistant to the chancellor for urban affairs at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and as Interim President of Roxbury Community College. Among the many organizations that Hubie has nurtured, he takes special pride in founding the Boston Children’s Chorus and in being a Charter Trustee of City Year. At the latter, he continues to serve as a Senior Advisor and Social Justice Entrepreneur-in-Residence. Hubie has received honorary doctorate degrees from seven universities. As a longtime Fellow and Member of the MHS, Hubie continues to be a true friend and supporter of the Society’s mission, exemplifying the spirit of history in the making. 9

Guest Speaker
Heather Cox Richardson Heather Cox Richardson is Professor of History at Boston College and an expert in 19th-century America, specializing in politics and economics. She has written about the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, and the American West in books whose subjects range from the European settlement of the North American continent to the history of the Republican Party through the Trump administration. Her nightly newsletter, Letters from an American, chronicles current events in the larger context of American history. Launched in September 2019, it has built a devoted readership of more than one million readers who rely on the letters for their thoughtful, concise, and deeply informed rendering of daily events. In the New York Times last winter, Ben Smith wrote that Heather is “doing the opposite of most media as she calmly situates the news of the day in the long sweep of American history.” In February, she was invited to the White House for a conversation with President Joseph Biden, which was seen, or listened to, by more than one million people. Heather has written widely for popular publications and is a national commentator on American political history and the Republican Party. Her work has appeared in the Guardian, the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and Quartz, among other publications, and she has been a columnist for Salon.com. She and Joanne Freeman cohost the podcast Now and Then on the Vox network, which quickly became one of the network’s most popular programs.

Heather has been honored with the 2021 Ruth Ratner Miller Memorial Award for Excellence in American History from the Concord Free Library and the Massachusetts Governor’s Award in the Humanities. She shared the Intelligence and Courage Award from the Frances Perkins Center with Senator Elizabeth Warren. In 2022, USA Today named her one of their national Women of the Year. Heather is the author, most recently, of How the South Won the Civil War: Oligarchy, Democracy, and the Continuing Fight for the Soul of America. Named one of the Washington Post’s 50 Notable Works of Nonfiction, it was praised as “engrossing and deeply relevant” in that publication. The book was recently honored with the Robert M. Utley Book Prize from the Western History Association. Her history of the Republican Party, To Make Men Free: A History of the Republican Party, was published in 2014 and was an Editor’s Choice selection of the New York Times Book Review. The Los Angeles Times called it “The most comprehensive account of the GOP and its competing impulses . . . an important contribution to understanding where we are today.” Her other books include Wounded Knee: Party Politics and the Road to an American Massacre, The Death of Reconstruction, and The Greatest Nation of the Earth: Republican Economic Policies during the Civil War.
