FALL 2017

ON STAGE  |  IN THE GALLERIES  | ON THE FIELD

We suspected that our friends and patrons would love B6, our new Robert W. Wilson Building — it’s so plainly beautiful on its own: powerful, muscular, yet full of light and air — and that’s before the sweeping group of installations by Jenny Holzer, Laurie Anderson, and James Turrell. For many, Gunnar Schonbeck is the deep surprise in our new space: his oddly friendly instrumentarium is riveting our guests, the overwhelming majority of whom do indeed turn out to be closeted musicians, just as Gunnar believed. What delights us equally is the attention that our visitors are giving lesser known artists Dawn DeDeaux and Lonnie Holley and also Elizabeth King, Steffani Jemison, Tanja Hollander, and a host of artists in In The Abstract, including Sarah Braman, Tomashi Jackson, and Rodney McMillian, among many others. Lonnie is bringing his unclassifiable, made-for-the-moment music to us on December 2, by the way, and you won’t want to miss that confluence of art and music. Providing space, time, and tools to emerging and mid-career artists — and offering space and time, as well as our inhouse production talent, to well-established visual and performing artists who have a risky new idea — is the very heart of our mission.

Joseph Thompson, Director P.S. A note of gratitude and welcome to all the new visitors and members who found their way to North Adams over the past few months. We feel your energy and support, and look forward to making this dynamic microcity of ours ever more interesting, diverse, and economically vibrant. Thanks for shopping local.

Liz Glynn’s conceptually layered, multifaceted examination of the digital age will animate our football field-sized Building 5 beginning October 7. On our stages, encounter new works by musician Gabriel Kahane, choreographer Lee Serle, and what we expect to be an astounding new show from Kronos Quartet, in residence at MASS MoCA this fall with another one of our favorites, documentary filmmaker Sam Green.  Join us.

LONNIE HOLLEY Saturday, December 2, 8pm

A voice from another time Artist and musician Lonnie Holley recorded his first album in 2012 at age 62 after making home recordings for more than two decades. Holley’s music, like his art, defies classification — haunting vocals, keyboards, and new renditions of songs with every performance. He has collaborated with musicians such as Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, Bill Callahan, and Bon Iver. Holley’s medium is the moment. He’s here with a new band, playing new arrangements and new songs: you’ll only hear it once. The evening will start with a screening of a short documentary about Holley. Preferred ticket buyers are invited to a gallery tour with the artist at 3pm. CLUB B10 | $10 STUDENTS | $12 ADVANCE | $18 DAY OF | $24 PREFERRED

LIZ GLYNN

THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF ANOTHER POSSIBLE FUTURE

Liz Glynn, III, 2010 Courtesy of the artist

In this sprawling, two-tiered labyrinth of multi-sensory experiences, LA-based artist Liz Glynn examines our physical and psychological responses to the shift away from a material economy. She captures the spectacle and precarity of the transition to the digital age with an elevated walkway and scaffolding towers that host both visitors and 3-D printers nearly 14 feet above a maze of industrial artifacts, including shipping pallets, sea containers, and an avalanche of consumer goods.

Wilson Building. See it paired with an earlier work, The Lurid Attack of the Monsters from the Postal News Aug 1875 (Kabal American Zephyr), a cannon-shaped work armed with rusted, bent saws. DAWN DEDEAUX & LONNIE HOLLEY

THUMBS UP FOR THE MOTHERSHIP New Orleans-based Dawn DeDeaux’s southern gothic works pair with Atlanta-based artist Lonnie Holley’s found object sculptures. Both artists address the politics of our time, from racism to environmental degradation. Thumbs Up for the Mothership is a collaboration with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation residency program at Captiva Island, Florida. Exhibition support is provided by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Barr Foundation, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Paired with a male and a female figure suspended in a tangle of shining aluminum, the ensemble conjures both physical and emotional states. STEFFANI JEMISON

PLANT YOU NOW, DIG YOU LATER Steffani Jemison explores the intersections of literacy, music, faith, and race in her restrained but highly evocative exhibition whose title nods to Louis Armstrong’s embrace of vernacular language. She bathes visitors in the sounds of a moving audio work, Recitatif — based on Solresol, a 19th-century utopian language meant to be universal. Major exhibition support is provided by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Barr Foundation, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
