WINTER BREAK AT THE ArtBar Kidspace / pg. 18
Greetings, Though I usually use this space to tout upcoming shows, I’d like instead to talk about our members—our core audience, the community of people who discover (and create) connections across the many shows they’ve enjoyed, offering new ideas, spreading the word, and becoming friends with our staff and artists. Our members make this place. Membership is multi-directional, benefitting our artists, our programs, and our audience. Members enjoy “first dibs” on sell-out events, deep discounts on select performances, and — always —free museum admission and zero handling fees on advance ticket purchases. When we opened Eclipse —an exhibition organized by artists Edward Morris and Susannah Sayler in collaboration with The New Yorker’s Elizabeth Kolbert —our members knew about it (and the opening reception) before anyone else. Become a member (or renew) to get $5 member tickets to shows such as Sundance Theatre Lab and kid-pop Elska. Become a member to save at our retail stores. Members get more art, hear more music, and eat more ice cream (because even that’s cheaper for members). But most importantly, members —the people who create this place by using it —catalyze the web of social and creative interactions that define MASS MoCA. If you are already a member—thank you. If you’re not already a member, sign up now. Enjoy the fall season, and join us in New York City on October 6!

’80s ELECTRO-SOUL = DANCE ‘TIL YOU DROP With twenty hands, People’s Champs synthesize rhythms from all over the world — from Rio to Lagos to Detroit to Budapest — yet their roots-dance music is always deeply inflected with their Brooklyn heritage. Slinking synths and electronic riffs fold in to traditional rhythm and blues orchestration for an incredible night of moves-bustin’ up in the club.

“THERE WILL BE A THOUSAND MORE BRADLEY MANNINGS.” - JULIAN ASSANGE
In July 2013, Private Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison after publishing the largest set of classified documents ever leaked to the public. The conviction provoked a maelstrom of media coverage, ranging from portraits of Manning’s personal life to new dialogues about military abuses. In producer Beth Morrison’s latest work-in-progress, Ted Hearne and director Daniel Fish dive headfirst into this digital storm with an assemblage of Twitter feeds, chat transcripts, and court testimony, wound together in an arresting music-theater production. “THE THINKING MAN’S GUITAR HERO.” - THE NEW YORK TIMES
Magical guitarist Gary Lucas performs his original live score to a touchstone of Chinese cinema. Directed by Wu Yonggang and starring the incomparable Shanghai diva Ruan Lingyu, The Goddess (1934) tells the tragic tale of a young single mother forced into prostitution in Shanghai — the “Paris of the East” — in order to raise money for the education of her son. Lucas’s score draws upon his extensive knowledge of 1930s Shanghai pop, also displayed prominently in his celebrated album The Edge of Heaven. PHYSICS MADE SEXY, WITH BITTERS The Secret Science Club is a regular gathering in New York City featuring mind-bending lectures, volatile experiments, and thematic chemical libations (special cocktails, that is). It’s like the coolest science class you’ve ever been to, but with drinks and a DJ. SSC rockets into MASS MoCA with a special screening of Particle Fever, a “dazzling, dizzying documentary” that follows six high-energy scientists as they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe. PERFORMANCE POETRY Aja Monet is an internationally renowned poet and performer. Her voice is unforgettable. Her words, grounded in familiar sights and sounds, uproot the vivid imagery of everyday life with an impressionistic approach worthy of her last name. A musical scrim of hopes and dreams, scenes from childhood, and philosophical ponderings coalesce in an intimate night of spoken word.

CRAZY FUNNY, SCARY SMART “Smart, analytical and rising” is how Time Out NY described the Brooklynbased, Queens-raised comic Hari Kondabolu, a ubiquitous and hilarious presence on late -night TV (Letterman, Conan, Kimmel, Comedy Central) and at festivals from South by Southwest to Bumbershoot to Sasquatch. PLASTIC FANTASTIC The white noise of Niagara Falls, fog, lava, and smokestacks coalesce in Plastic Fantastic — the latest installation by Lee Boroson in our largest gallery. Inflatables, fabric, and glass create an immersive experience for viewers to move through. Boroson’s installations are at once embodied and ephemeral; they transform both material and experience while mediating between the landscape as culture and landscape as wilderness. September 1, 2014, marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Martha, the last surviving passenger pigeon — a dove-like bird which once darkened the sky with the immensity of its flocks. The installation, a collaboration between artists Susannah Sayler and Edward Morris and The New Yorker writer Elizabeth Kolbert, strikes a cautionary note about the rising number of extinctions.
