FRESHGRASS FESTIVAL

HE WHO GETS SLAPPED

Film with Live Music / pg. 11

Bluegrass and Roots Music pg. 17

We celebrate our 15th season this summer, starting May 24th with a rollicking dance party, pop-up performances by some of our favorites, and the opening of Teresita Fernández’s elegant exhibition, As Above so Below, comprised largely of graphite and gold. Darren Waterston’s warped riff on James McNeill Whistler’s Peacock Room is winning critical accolades and return visits from patrons raving about its sumptuous detailing. Nothing is quite as it seems in Izhar Patkin’s football field-sized veiled labyrinth. Dying of the Light is a love letter to the subtle beauty of celluloid film. And this marks the premier season for the Hall Art Foundation’s powerful Anselm Kiefer show, plus a new outdoor installation of perky, pink sculpture by Franz West. Musical highlights include Beck, Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth, rising star Jason Isbell, and our signature Bang on a Can festival — this year with Steve Reich and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche. Here’s a tip for lovers of roots music: enjoy family-friendly bluegrass pick-alongs every Saturday morning in our lobby (building your appetite for September’s knockout FreshGrass festival). Celebrate summer at MASS MoCA. Bring your family...we love kids, and they’ll love Sol LeWitt just as much as you’ll love Kidspace. Become a member and get free gallery admission and big savings on performing arts events (including $5 tickets to select performances throughout the year). Joseph Thompson Director, MASS MoCA

PS. Join us for a beer at The Chalet, Dean Baldwin’s bar-sculpture/beer garden, open from 5pm every Thursday and Friday evening (and many Saturdays too). PPS. The super-hot band Lucius will play our 15th anniversary benefit on October 6th in NYC. Since it provides 25% of our total programming budget we’d love you to join us!

A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY One-time Drive -By Trucker Jason Isbell writes open -hearted songs full of storm and drama, bursting with personal truths, and echoing with the southern sound of his Alabama upbringing. Teresita Fernández: Golden (Odyssey), 2014

In As Above So Below, Brooklyn-based artist Teresita Fernández creates a series of dynamic and immersive new works for MASS MoCA’s central galleries. The exhibition, which explores two essential materials — gold and graphite — features three large installations alongside India ink drawings on gold chrome panels. These works shift in scale from intimate to vast, from miniature to panoramic, all while exploring natural phenomena, landscape, and a range of historical and cultural references.

DARREN WATERSTON UNCERTAIN BEAUTY In the centerpiece of his exhibition Uncertain Beauty, Darren Waterston re-imagines James McNeill Whistler’s decorative masterpiece Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room (1876-77) as a psychedelic ruin – tortured by the history and scandal that overwhelm it. Close to thirty of the artist’s ethereal paintings accompany his extensively detailed Filthy Lucre.

THE DYING OF THE LIGHT FILM AS MEDIUM AND METAPHOR

A love letter to analog film, the exhibition features works by six artists — Rosa Barba, Matthew Buckingham, Tacita Dean, Rodney Graham, Lisa Oppenheim, and Simon Starling — who engage celluloid’s distinctive texture, grain, luminosity, and sound. With simple but powerful imagery — including a projector suspended by its own film loop — the ensemble of sculptural, atmospheric, and narrative works makes connections between this threatened medium and science, spectacle, memory, faith, and even death.

This exhibition is supported by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and an anonymous donor.
