LIVE MUSIC

Up front, Bright Ideas Brewing and Tunnel City Coffee join Gramercy Bistro and Lickety Split Café. We know art and music matter, but we don’t underestimate the power of great ice cream, coffee, and beer to make for a fine summer day. Or better yet, a whole weekend. Check out massmoca.org for interesting itineraries that will keep you in the Berkshires —listening to music, enjoying art and architecture, biking, birding, rafting, hiking, and eating fresh food. Plan to linger; there’s no way to do it all in one day. At MASS MoCA, you will want to take time to absorb Alex Da Corte’s glowing exhibition Free Roses this summer. It feels like swimming: lit with colored neon and the refracted light of sexy, sharply observed video, you will never look at a bottle of VO5 shampoo in the same way again. Explode Every Day, Sarah Crowner’s Beetle in the Leaves, Richard Nonas’ spacechanging, place-making Building 5 installation, and, of course, Sol LeWitt and Anselm Kiefer are all super shows. Our outdoor film programming is particularly strong this season, including an annual trip to the North Adams Airport on the 1st of July, and The Triplets of Belleville with live music by Benoît Charest’s 9-piece Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville on July 16. One of our treasured summer rituals is opening The Chalet, artist Dean Baldwin’s riverside beer garden adjacent to our campuscenter courtyards. Raise a glass with us there on Thursdays this season, but you’ll find us at Bright Ideas on Friday nights where there’s always good beer and good music.

Storied indie rock quartet Luna—led by Dean Wareham, seen most recently at MASS MoCA as onehalf of Dean & Britta—returns after a 10-year hiatus. With its 1999-era lineup (Wareham, Britta Phillips, Sean Eden, and Lee Wall), the band sounds as strong as ever and is back with a sweet vengeance to open our summer season. “One of indie rock’s most beloved live acts.” — Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone

EXHIBITIONS

ALEX DA CORTE FREE ROSES “The immersive world the exhibition creates can seem Wonka-ish, candy-colored and animated, with deranged elements like mirrorstriped floors, flying bats, plastic fruits and vegetables, a giant hoagie made of rubber, and a sculptural rendition of the couch in The Simpsons. But Mr. Da Corte, who has become highly sought-after in recent years for a riotous post-post-Pop sensibility, significantly darkens the picture around the corner from the romantic swans, where a video shows a man (Mr. Da Corte’s boyfriend at the time) shooting a syringe full of [soda] into his arm, drawn from a plastic liter bottle, in a work inspired by Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell. – The New York Times his exhibition is supported by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Massachusetts T Cultural Council, the Barr Foundation, Luxembourg & Dayan Gallery, and ArtNet. Exhibitions of emerging artists are made possible in part by the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation.

Wonder agitates, mesmerizes, and shocks. It is a sudden intake of breath, a gaping mouth, and a surrender to the ineffable. In Explode Every Day: An Inquiry into the Phenomena of Wonder, 23 artists working in a wide range of media explore perception, time, and the cosmos, to provoke viewers into their own state of wonder. Featuring artists: Jonathan Allen, Jen Bervin, Jason de Haan, Tristan Duke, Sharon Ellis, Tom Friedman, Christopher Gausby, Hope Ginsburg, Laurent Grasso, Pierre Huyghe, The Institute For Figuring, Nina Katchadourian, Michael Light, Charles Lindsay, Megan and Murray McMillan, Ryan and Trevor Oakes, Demetrius Oliver, Véréna Paravel and Lucien CastaingTaylor, Dario Robleto, Rachel Sussman, Julianne Swartz, Chris Taylor, and Fred Tomaselli This exhibition is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and a grant from the Artist’s Resource Trust, with additional support from the Horace W. BEETLE IN THE LEAVES

Sarah Crowner’s first solo U.S. museum exhibition features sewn paintings made from raw and painted canvas and new large-scale tile works. Mining the legacy of abstraction within both the fine and applied arts, Crowner creates patterns and makes subtle associations between her works, their architectural surroundings, and the history of art. In the main gallery, a raised platform covered with cement tiles—designed and hand-painted by the artist in Marrakech—becomes a stage. Partially surrounding this structure, a wall supports new, sumptuously painted, large-scale abstract paintings, which reference the landscape and trees visible through gallery windows. his exhibition is supported by the Horace W. Goldsmith T Foundation, the Barr Foundation, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Mr. and Mrs. J. Tomilson Hill, Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger, Christopher Bass, Michael and Roberta Joseph, Tristin and Martin Mannion, and Lise and Jeffrey Wilks.
