2 about_me My name is Massoud Bagheri. For more than a decade, I have worked in both architecture and landscape architecture. I have a BS in Architectural Engineering and an MDes in Sustainable Urban Environments. Since finishing my graduate program at Northeastern University, I have been working in landscape design and planning. I believe thoughtful, well-researched, and creative landscape design can help preserve and enhance our natural and built environments. I enjoy working on public projects that make a greater and more longterm impact on communities and urban environments. I aspire to find efficient and innovative ways to communicate and present design ideas to clients and the general public. I love working with and within different communities and using my skills and knowledge of design to elevate people’s lives. contact info (978) mass.bagheri@gmail.com942-8612

quincy_massachusetts at bishop land design role: project manager Presidents Coast is a citywide network of pedestrian and bike trails aiming to connect Quincy’s peninsulas to Quincy Center and improve access to the city’s natural resources and waterfront. BLD was commissioned to study, plan and design a network that takes advantage of existing infrastructure and open spaces, enhances physical and ecological conditions of both natural features and humanmade structures, and fills in the gaps with proposed design and engineering solutions. The initial step was a landscape master plan and feasibility study for a smaller portion of the project.

I managed the project from kickoff through preparation of the final report. My responsibilities included managing the design team staff for research, design and production, coordinating project schedule, billing, client meetings, steering committee and community engagement events. A big part of the work was handling communications with community members, city departments, media staff, and journalists. Public outreach was one of the main parts of the scope. I managed our team to plan, prepare and conduct multiple public events and later on, document, synthesize and visualize the recieved feedback. The goal for this phase was to understand the community’s desires and priorities, find the best alignments for this pedestrian network, and identify the permitting processes for implementation.

7 Part of the larger ‘Fargo Civic Plaza’, Sodbuster landscape was authorized, went to bid and constructed in an accelarated timeline due to the Sodbuster sculpture’s return from restoration after a decade and the urgent need to prepare a proper permanent platform for the locally-beloved art piece. The accelarated schematics-to-construction process took place concurrently with the concept design for the rest of the plaza. The fast-track construction required fast and extensive communication and coordination with the CM team. As the project manager, I managed the design staff to prepare the construction drawings, coordinated with sub-consultant teams and the constructioin manager for reviews, revisions and RFIs, and handled coordination with city & museum staff that oversaw the project. I travelled to Fargo every other week during the 3-months long construction for site visits and OAC meetings. The scope also included custom-designed benches and signage for the site. One important aspect of the work was coordinating the design and engineering of various concrete features, such as stamp concrete paving and the main platform for the sculpture that required critical specifications for strength and maintenance requirements.

The planting and grading strategies for this project — from research to implementation — was heavily affected by the transitional nature of the site. The grading needed to take into account the developing design of the larger plaza while still meeting existing elevational reqirements and maintaining ADA compliance. Inspired by the unique prairie to riverline gradient, the team researched and develiped a planting palette that mixed native and adaptive species. The drawings set needed to accurately reflect specific design decisions and equip the construction team to build feature ON THE DRAWINGS. After collaborating with the planning team for the Fargo downtown plan, the city commissioned BLD to look closer into the recommended site for the civic plaza. To create a conceptual vision for the site, the team carried out contextual planning and site programming followed by creating a landscape masterplan based on the findings and Therecommendations.goalwastodesign a much-needed space for civic gatherings and public events that also expands downtown’s green open space network, improves pedestrian and bike connectrivity, and enhances access to the river — all while addressing the site’s grade and hydrological challenges.

[ contextual planning + landscape masterplan + concept design ] fargo_north dakota at bishop land design role: project manager, designer

The project needed to blend diverse interests of a variety of public and private stakeholders and the broader downtown community, which required a robust public and stakeholder engagement process. The team conducted research and public surveys as part of the contextual planning. Research findings and feedback from the community and stakeholder groups helped create a framework and vision which was the basis for concept design. The concept design process explored multiple options via different development scenarios for the area as well as different priorities based on project timeline and programming.

During the overal progression of this project I contributed as various roles. Under direction from prinicpal, I managed the design team through research, analysis, community engagement, concept development, and preparation of final reports for each phase. I oversaw the creation of two booklets for the masterplan and concecpt design phases. Presenting the work to the client and addressing their feedback with reviews and revisions was an important part of my responsibilities. In addition to overseeing the design staff, I also contributed development of concept, production of graphics, from maps and diagrams to concept renderings and managed project schedule, billing & sub-consultant coordination.

BLD was asked to facilitate a conversation in the community around improvements to the berm, which houses a high-level sewer line, a critical piece of infrastructure that services 1+ million people. This berm is also utilized as an emergency egress route at the time of severe storms when all nearby roads are flooded. The current surface conditions and the narrow path width made traversing it very difficult, and prevented emergency vehicles from utilizing the corridor.

Designed in 1903 by Olmsted and Eliot, it still serves as a functional ecology and a critical component of the habitat between the marsh and the urban forest. The goal was to preserve and improve community access while restoring the berm and enhancing its ecological conditions.

As project manager I helped facilitate meetings, developed the pamphlet survey and other tools for community engagement, worked on historical and contextual research, produced existing conditions drawings and diagrams, and proposed concept design schematics. Kincaide Park, a public open space in an underserved neighborhood, was underutilized and in dire need of improvements with floooding and public safety issues. The site includes historic elements such as old growth heritage trees and stone walls reminiscent of granite refining and polishing companies of old Quincy. Community’s desires and wishes for the park were recorded and analyzed in the community outreach process and synthesized in the development of design. Public input and research revealed that stormwater management, recreational amenities, and community access and safety needed to be addressed as priorities. Localized flooding was addressed by restoring the hydrologic cycle that once existed on-site through strategic grading and introducing new infiltration basins to collect surface water, mimicking the function of the former brook. The basins were filled with diverse ecotypes consisting of native and naturalized plants. A meandering pedestrian trail ties together all the spaces and features and provides space for jogging and running and access to fitness and play equipments. Athletic fields and courts were designed to be used for a range of programming and overal layout of site features aims to accomodate multigenerational use of the space. Improved entrances, increase accessibility to the park. Customdesigned and strategically placed seating supplies comfortable, ADA accessible places to rest or watch field games. New lighting fixtures addressed safety concerns and and allow for extended programming after sunset.

I worked on many aspects of the Kincaide Park project throuought the design and construction process. I participated in the development of initial conceptual options and production of schematics and graphics from concept to construction documentation. I worked along with other team members on the model-making, 3D modeling, site reconnaissance, and community engagement. Under direction of design leadership, I worked on the design of benches from conceptual sketches to prototyping, and final implementation; led the development of signage design for the park; contributed to project administration by drafting contract ammendments; and handled billing and client relations. This project was a great opportunity to participate in various roles and different capacities through years and witness landscape design from beggining to post occupancy.

BLD was commissioned by a young Michigander family to develop a landscape concept design and site master plan for their 30+ acre property, located on a major bend along the Rogue River. The site topography and ecological conditions provided an opportunity to design unique landscape experiences. The program for the site included a main house, auxiliary structures, and a variety of trails and landscape amenities. As project manager, under direction of design leadership, I worked on creating a framework to address client’s desired objectives and timeline. The team carried out studies and conceptual schemes to locate the structures, trails, and amenities on the site; address boundary requirements, easement constraints, conservation considerations, existing ecological features, wildlife and habitat; and develop ideas for a variety of landscape types and user experiences. The studies needed to address infrastructural concerns and large scale conceptual level maintenance and operations of the compound. The resulting concept includes a diverse set of woodland, wetland and riparian plant communities and takes advantage of the topographic conditions and elevational relation between wetland and upland areas to create a network of on-grade and elevated paths that accommodate navigating the site and connect various amenities such as the picnic area, river overlook, and boat launch.

The goal of this project was to re-establish human and ecological connections between downtown grand rapids and the Grand River. The proposed design aimed to enhance the riverfront’s ecological capacity through habitat creation, and incorporation of planted terraces and a planted flood berm to increase flood mitigation. ‘The edge’ provides better access to the river for pedestrians and cyclists and accommodates a wide range of water-related activities such as pole fishing, kayaking, and coneoing.

As a designer, I particpiated in design working sessions, and contributed to preparation of drawings sets and presentations. I worked closely with leadership in developing the complex cutom-designed seatings that are formally inspired by unique Grand River rock formations. These benches ranged from different sizes that integrate with the forms and levels of different parts of the site. The seating incorporated heating elements to expand use of the open space during cold winter months. Other than seats, this project included many other custum-designed pre-cast and cast-in-place concrete elements such as floodwall, ramps and pavers.

As a team member I helped producing the analysis and research graphics for the final report. The client wanted a destination for seasonal vacations and get-togethers with friends and family, that’s also suitable to be used throughout the year. The site contains a range of ecological conditions and opportunities to create outdoor spaces that accommodate and encourage mindful interaction with nature, like gardening and deer watching. One existing asset of the site is a pond that sits on the front portion, creating the perfect spot to locate the house and organize near-house landscape and pathways around it. The site includes a wetland area that required specific regulatory and ecological considerations to assure its preservation. I managed the project team, worked on site investigation and analysis, concept development and presentation. manager,

PARK XING was BLD’s submission to a design competition to reimagine Park Avenue in Manhattan. The concept occupies the medians of Park Avenue traces the lines of the City and its moving parts. Overlaying onto the existing streettrain-pedestrian corridor, PARK XING mixes the concepts of above and below. The structure is a flexible and responsive mechanism that creates a series of elevated paths, program amenities, and integrated points of access at buildings and at street level. The connective pathway runs through a SUPERFOREST, a microhabitat of high-performance vegetation that reduces urban heat island effect and helps sequestering carbon emissions generated by the traffic. I was on the team that worked on the submission and worked on both developing the design and creating the submission boards.

BLD was the landscape consultant on a multi-disciplinary team to investigate efficient landscape interventions for mitigating industrial and transportation pollutants in Delray neighborhood of Detroit. The landscape planning strategy for this project aimed at offsetting industrial and transportation emissions, exploring opportunities to boost investment, and enhance the overall quality of life for existing residents and workers. Central to this, the plan explores a cost-effective long-term strategy and identifies coding opportunities to create efficient vegetative buffers that balance economic growth with environmental justice considerations.

This residential property consists of two conjoined lots’ fabulous Lake Michigan views. The client’s vision is to build two structures- a private residence and a guest cottage. BLD was commissioned to develop a master plan and conceptual design for the site that included gardens, amenity terraces at the top of a bluff, revetment construction, & lake access. The proposed design invites the energy and dynamism of the lake and its rocky edges into the site to create vibrant spaces that accommodate for larger active groups and calm solitude. Planting strategies addressed privacy requirements. Incorporation of plants helped stabilize the armor stone revetment. As project manager, I worked closely with client, house architects and revetment contractors through design and construction processes.

The Ecological Stormwater Guidebook was developed as a comprehensive set of guidelines to be utilized by the city, developers, and neighborhood groups to address the unusual challenges of Fargo’s extensive stormwater infrastructure, including a large network of retention & detention basins that are used to capture excess runoff from storm and flood surges. The guidebook includes large scale ecological typologies, inspired by analogous situations found in post-glacial landscapes, that can be adapted to conditions either found or created within basins. I worked on the extensive ecological and environmental research and the development of the narrative and outline of the guidebook. I also worked on preparation of the graphic and text contents of the final book.

The playground was designed to provide a multigenerational gathering space for the community of Houghs Neck in Quincy, Massachusetts. Community participation was sought early in the process and feedback was incorporated into the design of the park. A peripheral curving fence with integrated seating, provides a protected space with play equipment for young children. The open lawn area supports passive recreation and ball play. Sustainability and low maintenance were achieved by xeriscape planting. I contributed to the design from day zero through construction documentation, and administration. Site visits for contractor coordination, material testing and equipment installation were among tasks I carried out. project tmanager, designer at bishop project tmanager, designer
