Taking Care of Each Other:

What Our Employees Have To Say

WE LCOM E ! To the first edition of the all new Massanutten Owners digital newsletter, My Massanutten. As I write this letter during what has been an exceptionally trying year for so many of our owners, employees, and guests, I am reminded of our core four values that have guided our Resort through this difficult period. We remain anchored to our core values to take care of ourselves, our owners, each other, and our property. This has led to many memorable experiences for our owners, guests, and community, which I think you will see displayed throughout this edition. In this issue you will find some helpful hints to make your next vacation a great one, some ideas on lesser known benefits of your ownership, and insights on some exciting new happenings at your Resort. In preparing this issue of the Massanutten Newsletter, I have been consistently reminded that what connects our Resort to our core values is the privilege to serve our owners, guests, and their families. Your memories and enjoyment of the Resort are what drive us to provide remarkable experiences in a safe and enjoyable environment. Our hearts and thoughts are with each and every one of you as we collectively push through this trying year and onto brighter times in the year to come. Thank you for being a part of our family and we can’t wait to see you on your next visit. Sincerely,

Matthias Smith General Manager/Vice President Massanutten Resort

BENEFITS OF PAYING

I N A DVA N C E

Did you know you can start paying future maintenance fees now? You don’t have to wait to receive your invoice – you can make smaller payments throughout the year to reduce the amount due when your account is billed. Paying your fees in advance allows you to confirm your reservation sooner and can increase your trading power with RCI. Remember: the sooner you confirm

a reservation, the greater availability there is to offer. Currently, our system does not offer automatic payment for maintenance fees, but many owners utilize bill-pay options through their financial institutions. Automated ACH payments will be available after we transition to our new property management system – stay tuned!

INDUSTRY NEWS Please be aware that Massanutten is consistently made aware of companies that defraud owners like you out of thousands of dollars with the promise of selling or renting their timeshare. These companies typically promise they can sell/rent your timeshare, allege they have a ready buyer/renter and usually charge large upfront fees. There are also relief companies which typically claim that you can be released from your contract and/ or relieved of your annual maintenance/assessment fees. Some of these companies even allege they have a relationship with Massanutten.

OF SCAMS

Don’t be tricked by professional-looking ads, documents, websites, or certain business ratings. These resale and relief companies usually shut down after a few years when they start to feel the pressure of government agencies or mounting lawsuits and simply start a new company. Be suspicious of companies that claim to be consumer advocates. Contact the State Attorney General and local consumer protection agencies in the state where the reseller is located to determine if there are any existing complaints.

UPDATES

OUR NEWEST ESCAPE ROOM IS NOW OPEN The Mayday Escape Room has taken the place of the Lucky Duck Speakeasy Escape Room at Woodstone Recreation.

THE OUTDOOR EXPANSION IS COMPLETE Our three new slides are ready for the 2021 season! MASS Mayhem, Valley Vortex, and Peak Plunge all provide unique riding adventures. Experience the zero gravity sensation as you plummet over 47’ down the half pipe and get vertical on MASS Mayhem. Valley Vortex’s tight corners and high banking turns have you experiencing extreme G’s. Be sure to keep your eyes open, as sections of colorful lights will delight and amaze. Peak Plunge provides sensational twists, turns, and drops creating an exciting ride for all.

15 3

RESORT UPDATES

Also included in the outdoor expansion is the enhanced kiddie area/splash pad. From a concrete splash pad with geometric shapes spraying water in all directions to a kiddie area with a rubber flooring, three slides specifically for the little ones, and a few ground water features round out this new outdoor kiddie area. A new bar/restaurant concept was added, too! Imagine Base Camp on a smaller scale. Yes, the WaterPark has it own umbrella bar and it is the hub of all the excitement. The menu is sure to have something for everyone; so sit back, kick your feet up, and relax while watching all the action.

In the Mayday Escape Room, you and the other passengers are thrilled to embark on a submarine adventure to exotic locales around the world. During your private tour of the bridge, the jovial captain calls on the video monitor to welcome you. His joy quickly turns to frustration as one of the systems malfunctions. Now it’s up to you and your fellow passengers to close all the water-tight doors on the submarine. If you fail, the vessel will take on freezing cold water and sink to the bottom of the ocean. The clock is ticking. Work together and seal the doors before your vessel is claimed by the ocean. All Massanutten escape rooms are cleaned before and after each session to make sure we are meeting the highest levels of cleanliness to protect our staff and guests.

Why Leaves Change Color A succession of warm, sunny days and cool, crisp but not freezing nights seems to bring about the most spectacular color displays. Two factors influence autumn leaf color-leaf pigments: length of night and weather. The timing of color change and leaf fall are primarily regulated by the calendar, that is, the increasing length of night. As days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical processes in the leaf begin to paint the landscape with Nature's autumn palette. There are three pigments in leaves:

• CHLOROPHYLL, which

gives leaves their basic green color. It is necessary for photosynthesis, the chemical reaction that enables plants to use sunlight to manufacture sugars for their food. Trees in the temperate zones store these sugars for their winter dormant period.

17

RESORT UPDATES CONT.

• CAROTENOIDS, which

produce yellow, orange, and brown colors in such things as corn, carrots, and daffodils, as well as rutabagas, buttercups, and bananas.

• ANTHOCYANINS, which give color to such familiar things as cranberries, red apples, concord grapes, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, and plums. They are water-soluble and appear in the watery liquid of leaf cells.

During the growing season, chlorophyll is continually being produced and broken down and leaves appear green. As night length increases in the autumn, chlorophyll production slows

down and then stops and eventually all the chlorophyll is destroyed. The carotenoids and anthocyanins that are present in the leaf are then unmasked and show their colors. Certain colors are characteristic of particular species. Oaks turn red, brown, or russet; hickories, golden bronze; aspen and yellow-poplar, golden yellow; dogwood, purplish red; beech, light tan; and sourwood and black tupelo, crimson. Maples differ species by species-red maple turns brilliant scarlet; sugar maple, orange-red; and black maple, glowing yellow. Source: USDA Forest Service

You can see some pretty majestic sunrises up here from multiple vantage points. Especially this time of year (October), the way the sun comes up over the Blue Ridge Mountains - you will see brilliant colors. Good spots to catch a good sunrise are easily accessible at the Woodstone building or Regal Vistas. - Matt

I love that hunting and fishing are available. - Glorietta

I appreciate the cultural diversity among co-workers. - Sonia

I enjoy how united we are working together as a team to make remarkable experiences for guests and the passion and safety in everything we do in our company for our guests. - Lourdes

We don’t see ourselves as Massanutten employees. We see ourselves as a big Massanutten family. - Esteban

I love that we have accessibility to rent out facilities and cater for celebrations and special occasions. - Starr

Like a gem, Massanutten Resort is multifaceted, providing a wide array of experiences to all those who visit. We have employees in departments ranging from the smiling faces you see at the Front Desk to those behind the scenes in our Domestic Services and Maintenance crews. Like bees in a hive, everyone works together purposefully to set the foundation for an exceptional experience for our guests. Hear it from them! Meet some of our Front Desk, Domestic Services, and Maintenance crew members.

How would you describe Massanutten in one word? Home. I mean this both literally and figuratively. As a company, we go to great lengths to make employees feel at “home". We have a great onboarding process for new employees to really acclimate them to our resort culture and values. Personally, having worked up here some time, I have always been keen to the nature and wildlife here at the resort. So about seven years ago my wife and I decided to move here. Often I can be at my kitchen window doing dishes and see a pack of deer grazing the mountain behind my home. Also, it makes for a great work commute! - Matt

What is one stand out guest memory you’ve had since working at Massanutten? Five years ago I went to take care of a complaint and the guest was so surprised because I remembered her from a previous year when I took care of her unit issues. Now, every year I wait before she comes and she calls me because she wants to see me. That’s Thanksgiving week. It’s something so special to me that every year I wait on her call. - Lourdes There is a guest who used to sing to me every time he and his wife visited the resort. They would ask for me. - Glorietta I can recall great memories of sitting with Mr. West in the main lobby having great conversations as he came in daily for his coffee and to read the paper. - Starr A guest’s words of gratitude for the quality of my work. The guest gave me twelve dollars of two dollar bills from her own piggy bank, which I’ve kept from three years ago. - Sonia

What do you enjoy about your position at Massanutten? I like being able to assist coworkers and guests. I enjoy doing my best and seeing them smile when they are pleased. - Glorietta To have the opportunity to work with employees from different departments within the company. - Esteban
